5/20 - Realized I I had a business trip pop up on 6/9, called directly to 69 and they changed it in their system
5/25 - Figured I should probably call to get expedited shipping back, just in case. Called 69 directly and charge hit the card immediately
5/30 - Called under 2 weeks to get status, but got nowhere. Reached out to senators office too
6/1 - Called again, and got told it was approved and should be printed and shipped by COB on 6/2. Showed approved a few hours later and later in the day, it showed shipped with a tracking number and a ETA on 6/4. That later disappeared. However, the senator emailed back with the same tracking number later that day
6/2 - Delivered. Passport officially issued on 5/31
In total, 25 business days from in process to issue, which is right on schedule for most 69 applications I've seen so far.

2022 1040NR / W-7 ITIN Application Guide - Gambling Income Method

The purpose of this post is to provide a simple step-by-step guide for Canadians to apply for and obtain an ITIN so that they can apply for US credit cards and take advantage of US credit card signup bonuses. This guide involves submitting a Form W-7 Application for ITIN and a 1040NR non-resident tax return to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
This is a method that should apply to most Canadians. Please leave all questions as comments, as I often browse through this thread without logging in and generally do not respond to DMs.

Notice about Paid Services

Paid services are available, but they are not necessary as the forms are simple to complete. I do not endorse any specific service. If you choose to use a paid service, ensure that their PTIN and full name are disclosed on any 1040NR form you file.
The preparation of a tax return for compensation, including the 1040NR non-resident tax return discussed below, requires that the preparer be registered with the IRS, and the preparer must include the PTIN and their personal information (including their name) on the second page of the 1040NR under "Paid Preparer Use Only", irrespective of the method of submission. If you pay for a service that prepares for you an 1040NR (including a "draft" of such a return), and fails to disclose their PTIN on the documents you file, that preparer may be subject to IRC 6695 penalties, injunction and/or disciplinary action.
If you are using a paid service always ensure that their PTIN and full name are disclosed on any 1040NR you file. It protects you too, as they can be penalized by the IRS for unauthorized disclosure or use of your personal information.

Big Picture: How it Works

There are very specific reason where the IRS will issue an ITIN. These include to obtain tax treaty benefits, to file a tax return, and more. Throughout the years, administrative efficiency has taken away the need to issue an ITIN for the purposes of obtaining a tax treaty benefit. So if you have been reading about obtaining an ITIN by saying "I need an ITIN to reduce my withholding tax with Amazon/Smashwords", this no longer works, it is not worth your time to try.
Instead, the ITIN can be obtained by filing a tax return declaring some amount of U.S. income, which I will share with you upfront, although paid ITIN services will skirt around informing you of this directly. The fact that you haven't actually earned anything is irrelevant here (unless you don't want an ITIN lol). The self-declared income can be sourced from US-based online casinos, so you don't even need to set foot in the USA to claim US-source gambling income (as noted by Prince of Travel).
Think of it as "I have $85 USD of gambling/interest income sourced from the USA (e.g. gambling: specifically from blackjack, baccarat, craps, roulette, or big-6 wheel; interest: interest from a US source), and I'm an upstanding person so I need to report it to the IRS".
This guide will use gambling income, but it only takes minor changes if you want to report interest income instead on your 1040NR instead.

Timeline

The time it takes for you to receive your ITIN letter varies greatly but appears to have settled around 1.5 months in 2023 at the time I updated this post. You may want to read through comments in this thread or the 2022 thread (for 2021 tax forms), to see other people's timelines. Please share your own! I sort the threads by New in order for newer data points to be more visible.

Who it won't work for:

• People eligible for a SSN (are eligible to work in the USA and don't need an ITIN)
• People who already have an ITIN (it will require minor modifications to submit for renewal)
• People who have other sources of US-source income (please get professional tax help)

What you'll need to prepare the forms:

• Download the following forms
• W-7 Form (and the W-7 instructions for reference)
• 1040NR Form
• Supplementary forms and schedules to the 1040NR: !!!!* Schedule 1 !!!!* Schedule OI
• Proof of identity, Canadian passport preferred, see below
• A listing of dates you were physically present in the USA for, for the year you are filing for (currently 2022 tax year) - it's ok if this is zero.
• Number of days in USA for each of the three previous years (2020, 2021, 2022)
• Your Social Insurance Number (Canada)

What you don't need:

• Proof of gambling income - you are self-declaring gambling income, and in practice the amount of income you declare is less than the amount required for a casino to issue you a W-2G (a form that declares your gambling winnings)
• To step foot in the USA during the year you are filing - you are self-declaring gambling income from an online US-based casino

Completing the W-7 (Rev Aug. 2019)

Job done!

Congratulations! You finished completing the forms! The next step is to submit the forms to the IRS, briefly here are the four options:

• Book an appt by phone and show up in person to an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center in the USA, must have completed all docs and bring them to appt (no mailing required), you do not need a certified copy of your passport.
• Mail in your forms along with the original copy of your passport (the IRS will return it by mail)
• Mail in your forms along with a Certified True Copy of the passport, obtainable from Service Canada in-person or by mail. You will need to write a short letter to Service Canada telling them you need a certified copy of your passport e.g. "I am requesting a certified copy of my passport as the US Internal Revenue Service requires a certified true copy of a travel document. This document will be used as proof of identity in the application of a Tax Identification number needed to file a US Non-Resident Income Tax Return."
• Apply via a Certified Acceptance Agent ($$$)

Mailing instructions:

Suggested method is via registered mail with Canada Post (~$15), for proof of delivery and tracking. If you are using a private courier (e.g. UPS, FedEx, etc.) use the mailing address on Pg 6 of the W-7 instructions.

IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center - In-Person Appointment

You can submit your forms in-person at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC), located across the USA and available by appointment only during normal business hours. Applying at a TAC saves you from having to mail in your original passport or paying for a certified true copy of your passport.
Call 844-545-5640 to schedule an appointment in advance, up to 2 months before, you will need one appointment per person, even if they are your spouse. Some people have reported difficulty calling from a Canadian phone number, and have been able to obtain success using a VoiP to make the appointment. Others have also reported success from calling 267-941-1000 (not a toll-free number) and letting the phone agent transfer you to the proper line. If the lines are busy, you will need to keep trying until you get through - I would recommend calling with a couple different phones until you get through.
You will need to bring your passport, as well as a duplicate copy of your forms so they can stamp them as received. Upon completion, they will inform you that you will receive a letter letting you know of your ITIN application results mailed to your home.
Appointment length differs based on the agent that serves you. There are data points that go from 20 minutes per person up to 1 hour. Some data points indicate that the clerk at the TAC may confuse your application with another reason of registering for an ITIN (e.g. meeting the substantial presence test). Remember that the clerk's role is to make sure your application is complete before submission, and they do not make any determination on your ITIN application. Kindly remind them that the reason you are filing is to file a tax return (the 1040NR) and that you need it submitted to the ITIN group for their consideration.

Payment

As noted previously, you will owe a small amount of tax to the IRS. Comprehensive instructions on how to pay your US taxes are online.
You can either pay with filing of your 1040NR, or after you receive your ITIN. The easiest way may be to obtain a $USD money order from a Canadian bank (TD, BMO and HSBC are all capable of this), and submitting it with your TAC appointment, or the mailing of your application.
If you have a U.S. bank account (not a $USD account at a Canadian bank) you can also pay by online banking, but only after you obtain an ITIN.
From my own research, if you have a BMO premium chequing account (account fees waived for a minimum balance of $6,000), you're eligible for a BMO $USD chequing account (no fees for withdrawals/deposits), and $USD money orders issued at no fee.

Aren't I Late on filing/paying my taxes for 2022?

If you are concerned about filing your 2022 after the April 18, 2023 filing deadline, it appears from Form 2210 that there is no penalties due if your income is less than $1,000. You will still owe interest on late payment, you can add $2 or $3 to the amount you owe to cover.

I lost my ITIN Letter!

If you lose your ITIN or your ITIN letter, you can get the ITIN by calling the IRS at +1 267-941-1000 and provide your name, mailing address, birthdate. You can then request a generic letter with your ITIN to help you with proof of your ITIN.

ITIN Expiry

Your ITIN will expire. I have not seen any evidence of them reassigning an ITIN to someone else yet, but the possibility exists.

I'm looking to apply throughout the UC system for college and am particularly reaching for Berkeley and UCLA. For these campuses in particular, I've noted that they (the former especially) seem to place a large consideration upon holistic elements and can be relatively relaxed in terms of GPA/coursework in exchange.
As someone struggling a bit with GPA (3.77 UW, 4.0 W per UC calculations), I'm trying to elevate everything else about my application as much as I can and am wondering if anyone here has any suggestions for what might appeal to a reader when it comes to things related to computer science.
I have two instances of local employment within the sector and have done activities in school (student sysadmin, robotics team programming) and am trying to land an internship at a F500 this summer, but beyond that, do you think things such as certifications/badges would be worth getting? Are there any non-engineering-related awards/competitions I could try at?

Applied in early March, the application was accepted 3/8.
I start to panic around May 22, because our DOT is...today. June 3. 🙃 Do you see where this is going?
As I'm sure many of you have become more than aware, the whole experience trying to call NPIC is a total nightmare.
Around May 24, I try to pay for 1-2 day shipping and expedited service. No charge on card. Passport still stuck In Process, NPIC have no relevant information that you can't already see from your status page.
I try to get congress involved, case worker just tells me what the NPIC agent she talked with said, which is not much different than what I've already been told thousands of times and asked if I wanted to give my CC info to expedite. Already did that. Not much else.
Finally, on June 1, it changed to Approved and said may arrive on around June 7, than changed to Shipped with tracking #. The tracking # than disappeared from the status page sometime the same day. But I still saved the #.
It changed from Shipped back to Approved, and says "may arrive on or around June 10."
The tracking # says estimated to arrive June 5. Not that it does me much good now. I needed it today, as we were all going to travel to Brazil as a family, flight is today June 3.
The rest of my family applied for their passports only a few days before me, and they all got their passports 3+ weeks ago.
If it helps, they were all Locator 74, and I was the only one with Locator 62.
Everyone else left for the airport not too long ago, and I'm stuck at home. I don't know if I'm planning to try and catch another flight later on to catch up, but honestly, this entire ordeal has left me drained.

Hi y'all, does anyone know when VFS will start giving Status updates to track application on their website. It is showing "No records found" on my reference number.

I want to run a python Flask-Application using Docker. If I run it locally on my machine with docker-compose up it works fine as it should. However I want to run it on a server - and it doesn't work.

A have modified the timeouts to 7200 (=2 hours), this is the minimum for me to can run my cronjobs. However I did not have problems with my cronjobs.

Hi all! I'm posting on behalf of my sister, who needs advice on how to proceed with her medical school journey.
She took the MCAT twice last year and got a 511 and 509. She just retook the MCAT in May after using the Blueprint prep course to study, but got a 510. On her practice tests she was getting 518/519, so she's confused on why she didn't do as well on the actual MCAT.
Her friend used the prep program UWorld and got a 518 on the MCAT a few months ago. After my sister got her most recent MCAT score (510), I suggested she use the UWorld program and re-take the MCAT one last time in late June. She's already submitted her primary applications, but has edited them to add that she's taking the MCAT once again in June.
Is taking the MCAT one last time (the fourth time in two years) a good idea, or will it make admissions committees look down on her? Has anyone here used the UWorld program and seen good results? Are there other program recommendations?

She said she knows many of these are out of the question due to her MCAT scores. Can anyone recommend more medical schools she can apply to with her current MCAT scores? (highest is 511).

My EAD card was approved approximately 15 days ago, and since then the status has been stuck on the card being produced. I had a word with USCIS, and they told me that there's an IT issue with my application, and they've escalated it to the IT department for resolution. Has anyone been in the same boat, and how long did it take for a resolution?

Applied again for a CC in a Citibank referral link. During my 1st application, the CSR told me that since less than 1 year pa lang ako sa employer ko, magapply ako ulit.
I celebrated my 1st year anniversary 2 weeks ago. Used another referral link. Nagtext sila na they will contact me in 3 business days. Same scenario.
I tried to click the link on the email to check the status of my application. My CP no. is not receiving the OTP this time.

Hi, I want to share a solution I just discovered. I have a half-silvered teleprompter I use for zoom calls with my EOS M200 in webcam mode. Basically the camera sits behind the screen, so on a call I'm looking directly into the camera while looking at the display. In the past, I used an iPad Pro with Duet Display, which worked well. I had to give up the iPad Pro recently, so I switched to a 15.6" USB-C display instead. Mac OS doesn't have a built-in way to flip the screen horizontally. I tried a bunch of solutions with varying levels of success:

• [Mac Mirror Flip Utility](https://telepromptermirror.com/mirror-flip-your-mac/ - only works on the app, not the whole display, and has a very low frame rate
• [OBS](https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/flipping-obs-projector-window-for-use-with-a-teleprompter.122202/ - I got it working, but it was awkward as hell and definitely not plug and play
• SwitchResX - no longer has the option to flip horizontally due to incompatibility with current macOS version.

Then I saw an old reddit thread mentioning Better Display and holy crap it works perfectly. Here's how to set it up:

1. Download and install BetterDisplay, but don't open it just yet
2. Open System Settings Privacy & Security Screen Recording
3. Click the '+' button and select /Applications/BetterDisplay.
4. Now open BetterDisplay
5. Click the new status bar item (the icon is a monitor) and navigate to Tools Create New Dummy Create and Associate to
6. Open System Settings Display and click Arrange, then place the "Dummy" monitor where you usually place your teleprompter monitor. Put your actual teleprompter monitor somewhere out of the way. For example, my teleprompter is called "AROZPA" so my arrangement is [AROZPA][Dummy][Main monitor].
7. Click the BetterDisplay icon again and then click the little downward-facing caret under the "Dummy" display to access all the options.
8. Enable Dummy Stream Dummy Flip Horizontally
9. Set the resolution of Dummy to the same resolution as your physical teleprompter monitor (mine is 1920x1080) with Dummy Set Resolution 1920x1080
10. Enable Dummy Stream Dummy AROZPA (Extended) (or whatever your monitor is named)

That's it! You should now have a working teleprompter display!
BetterDisplay has a free 14-day trial for the "Pro" features. I don't know if the free version includes the "Flip Horizontally" feature, but I was so happy to have a solution that I paid the $15 USD anyway. I have no affiliation with the developer, nor do I get any kickbacks. I am not a shill, just happy to have a working solution.
BTW, I haven't tried this on an iPad, but it should also work with SideCar.

Edit for clarity: I want to get a post bacc in public policy because my GPA from my 20s kind of sucked. I also want to take some classes to get back into learning at a high level before jumping into law school.
I have encountered many issues in my attempt to become a Coog and would greatly appreciate any help or advice anyone could give me.
I graduated from Penn State in 2001 and recently decided to return to school to obtain a law degree. I applied to UH on April 27, and UH admissions received my transcript from Penn State on April 28. I called UH multiple times to determine why my Parchment account showed delivery, but the UH system did not show the document as received. The admission representative suggested I email admissions the Parchment confirmation so they could investigate this issue, which I did immediately (May 15). I later received an unrelated email (May 19) informing me that UH had not received my transcript. I replied to the email immediately and called the admissions department (May 22) to determine how to get my transcript into the system. I didn't receive a response to my initial email (May 15) until two weeks later (May 26). On the May 22nd call, I finally learned that the problem was that my transcript was in my maiden name, while I had initially applied to UH with my married name. When the transcript was received, the UH admissions system created a second UH account under my maiden name, even though I had listed my maiden name on my application. The admissions officers informed me they would need to initiate an account merge to solve the problem. I asked if there was anything I could do to help with the process, and I was told to wait for the merge process to complete. On May 27th, I called to follow up on the merge status. Unfortunately, the merge was not initiated on the 22nd. The admissions representative I spoke to that day (May 27) finally initiated the request. I was told the merge would take 10 to 14 business days and that an admissions decision would follow 4 to 6 weeks later. The last admissions officer I spoke to suggest I give up on attending UH in the fall... the timeline wasn't in my favor. I expressed my desire to transfer class credits from my PSU career to UH before the start of the fall semester, assuming I receive an admissions decision. She connected me with a transfer counselor who reviewed my transcript. The counselor informed me that very few credits would transfer because my degree is from an out-of-state university. She suggested I attend HCC, which has a more liberal policy for accepting out-of-state credits. After completing the "Texas Core" at HCC, my credits would then be able to transfer to the University of Houston. This stance confuses and frustrates me as Penn State is, obviously, an accredited and prestigious institution. I have completed more than enough classes to satisfy the "Texas Core" requirements. Why make me go through the trouble of attending another university to get my credits to transfer? After over a month of dealing with unhelpful and often rude individuals at the UH admissions office, I am still seemingly no closer to getting a decision on admission to UH. At this point, I'm considering giving up and attending another university in the Houston Metro Area.
I would appreciate any suggestions on cutting through the red tape and dealing with transferring out-of-state credits.

I just finished my 2nd-year cs at Western & doing a 4 months internship in Toronto.
2023 has been the absolute worst of my life.
First, my father got diagnosed with cancer in December. The same month, my mom was 5-days away from being deported (literally) b/c her current employer withdrew her support for our PR application on purpose. This led me to fail a final exam, which could've not been that detrimental if I wasn't a deadset AEO to HBA starting September 2023 (spoiler, Ivey is unforgiving in my case b/c of "F" on my transcript). With that butchering my mental health in FYE, worse things popped up. On a side note, I appealed my case to all parties responsible at uwo for resitting for a make-up final, but got turned down with zero transparency.
In March, my parents decided to take a divorce. Not that hurtful if I was a Canadian PR, but since I'm not yet, this meant I have my compulsory 18 months of military service remaining as getting Canadian PR thru my parents became 0% in chance, which is best to sort that out ASAP (Sep 2023 - Mar 2025 planned) as stuff will only get worse if I progress thru 3rd year (duh, no job).
To make things worse, I might have also hindered the opportunity for PGWP (typical way for international students to get PR after graduation thru a work permit 1-3 years) since I'm making a leave of absence for more than 150 days, meaning, even if I come back, I might not be able to work and get PR.
What is heartbreaking is my mom cries a lot these days. She thinks she ruined my life for a student who was on top of the game (I turned down waterloo cs & cornell science back in HS because I couldn't afford tuition), but she's dragging me to a sludge for giving me these unnecessary stresses that gave me a chronic depression.
On another side note, I had 3.9 GPA in 1st year, then 3.0 GPA in 2nd year, thus I have 3.4-3.5 cGPA with my repeated courses this summer.
TL;DR: I lost AEO status, my family is breaking up, I'll be 25 when I graduate from uwo cs program, and might not be able to stay here in the most ideal way. I'm thinking of transferring to schools in the States (for better or worse, idk) or maybe master's program in there as well for my salary escalation compare to ones that I can get here in Canada (& for my long-term financial goal of $5m net worth). I'm thinking of doing that while I'm gone for the military (luckily, I have 2 chances of transfer applications).
