2023.06.01 01:33 User_3971 MHA/CCA/PSE/RCA: Skip the line! Career jobs posted within. 5-31 rollup.

Damn it, lost a day! Had Memorial Day off but got fucked (mandated to work) on Saturday. Threw off the timing. Super-rare Wednesday edition!
Good afternoon. Brief listing of CAREER JOBS pulled from usps.com/careers/ for your convenience. Tell HR User_3971 sent you, let's see if they pay more than .25¢ per head. NOTE: Maintenance jobs are drying up - the In Service Register may finally be seeing results for our already career people.
Some jobs may be part-time regular however all listed jobs should qualify for federal benefits from day one. To save text I have only listed the location and date of posting for each. Use the posting number for your search term. LC and MM are entry-level Maintenance. Here is a Maint overview and here is Exam 955 info. You can DO it!

NOTE: USPS NEVER charges a fee for entrance exams. If payment is requested during the application process, walk the fuck away, go to usps.com/careers/ and APPLY THERE. We even has a video walkthrough prepared.

No experience necessary for the laborer custodial or maintenance mechanic positions. It helps on the interview but you can surely think of maintenance related experience to relay for an interview. Based on fixing things around your house, the car etc. Always mention working safely.

Pro tip: You can apply for any job that has an exam opening and the test is administered local to yourself. Make sure you're serious and score decently; you can turn down the job offer. Keep a physical copy of your exam score, I believe they are good for two years.
The reason is: These job postings can be posted externally at capacity for testing, meaning they will not allow you to take the exam if they have enough qualified applicants. However, if you have a test score on the books, you are a qualified applicant.

Explanation of MVO/TTO to save time:
MVO= CDL B Can only drive box trucks on public roads, can drive anything for moves on postal property.
TTO= CDL A Can drive anything.

USPS provides the training. (Maintenance jobs at least. TTO and management...GOOD LUCK)

You don't have to be crazy to work here. We'll train you. Everything but proper email usage.

2023.05.31 06:16 WeldAE The Success of Voting on Tesla Charger locations

Was looking through the Tesla charger map and noticed some of the new Tesla charging locations based on votes in the South East. What stands out is generally how good the choices are for the ones I have first hand knowledge of which is most of them as 7 out of 12 of them are near me. Here are my thoughts on the locations but I'd love to hear what everyone thinks, especially about the locations not covered by me. Is this voting for chargers a good thing or not solving real problems?

2023.05.25 14:00 dreftzg [Daily News] Massena LAB Launches A Very Attractive Mathey-Tissot Mergulhador, Unimatic Takes Inspiration From Tuscan Olive Fields For Series 8 And The Crazy People From HYT Are Back With A Quirky Rainbow Hastroid

It's Thursday and there are some very weird watches out today.

What's new

1/
Massena LAB Launches the Mathey-Tissot Mergulhador, a Follow Up to Last Year’s Type XX Chrono
William Massena, owner of Massena LAB, is increasingly profiling his collaborations with watch companies in two directions - either super high end or accessible. Now, we’re getting the latter. Massena LAB has teamed up with the old, discreet and relatively unknown outside of watch circles brand Mathey-Tissot to recreate Mathey-Tissot’s Mergulhador Skin Diver and recreate it into a slightly more modern package.
This is not the first time Massena is working with Mathe-Tissot, as they introduced a pair of limited Type XX chronographs, which were an instant and somewhat unexpected hit. Those watches were inspired by a watch in Massena’s personal collection, and that’s also the genesis of his latest project bearing the Mathy-Tissot name. This time, the watch in question is the Mergulhador Skin Diver, a watch that you’d be forgiven for being enamored with based on name alone. “Mergulhador” means “diver” in Portuguese, and as you’d probably guess, the original version of the watch was marketed to the Portuguese market in the 1970s, and was aimed at both military and civilian customers. It’s a bit obscure, but that’s what’s fun about it, and why it makes sense for someone with Massena’s knowledge and background to bring it to a larger audience.
The star of the watch is the dial, an amber fumé that looks like it’s been exposed to the elements on a divers hand for years. The amber complements the bright orange hour markers and an orange minute track against a black background that feels right out of the 1970s. The dial also features oversized white lume plots at each hour, the size of which is certainly in keeping with the general 1970s aesthetic.
The stainless steel case is pure skin diver, measuring 41mm in diameter and 12.8mm thick, and with a cushion shape. The steel bezel rotates in both directions. While this is not be common on modern divers, it was on pretty much every single recreational skin diver in the 70s. Inside is the reliable Sellita SW200 and it gets a 36 hour power reserve. The watch comes on a choice of a black rubber or black calfskin strap. Water resistance is rated to 200 meters.
Want some bad news? Only 99 will be made and it seems that they have all been sold out. However, the Massena LAB website does allow you to join the waitlist for this watch, so who knows - they might make a new run? Highly unlikely, but one might hope. If you could get it, it would cost you $995.
2/
Unimatic Takes Inspiration From Tuscan Olive Fields For Series 8 Limited Edition
Unimatic is one of those brands you either like or hate. Yes, people will dislike it for some pretty serious quality issues when the brand started, for their pretty strong marketing game or will argue that they are overpriced for what you get. I can understand all of those criticisms, and more. But I like them. They’re fun, quirky and are great summer watches. If you can get one for EUR 500, it’s perfectly fine value for money. However, their prices might vary depending on model and limited status.
Also, I also very much appreciate their collaborations, special editions and new models. Now Unimatic has a new limited edition series of the Modello lines in a gorgeous olive color that the brands says pays homage to Tuscany. All of the models get an olive dial and fantastic creamy markers and hands, as well as olive straps. It’s all very olive here and it’s called the Series 8, applied to four of the Modello models.
Staying true to the familiar style that has marked the Modello Uno, the U1S-80 features a 40mm case with relatively short lugs. It’s the closest to a dive watch that Unimatic makes, so it makes sense that it is water resistant to 300 meters and has a mono-directional safety bezel. However, here form coves over function as it is the most minimalist of bezels, so not very useful for diving.
Then there’s the U2S-80, the new version of the Modello Due, the brand’s field watch. As such, it’s smaller than the diver and very retro. Inside the 38mm case is the automatic caliber Sellita SW200-1b which gives it a hacking second, reminiscent of vintage field watches. The Modello Tre is a combination of a tough chronograph and a rugged dive watch. The U3-80 is an Olive drab rendition of Unimatic's chrono-diver and has a singular subdial at the 9 o'clock position as everything about this brand is minimalist. The U3-80 is the largest watch in the lineup, measuring at 41.5mm including the bezel, and is also the only quartz-powered watch in the series, opting for the Seiko Meca-Quartz VK64A.
The U4S-80, or the Modello Quatro, is definitely the most minimalistic of all the watches. It takes the dive watch model of the Modello Uno and strips it of all functionality by giving it a fixed steel bezel. And it looks even better with the olive green dial and strap.
Each model of the Unimatic limited edition Series 8 will receive a production run of 400 units and each watch ships with both an olive drab two-piece TPO strap and a seatbelt NATO strap, as well as a Unimatic Tough Case for two watches.
The U1S-80 will cost you EUR 925, the U2S-80 EUR 750, the U3-80 EUR 625, and the U4S-80 EUR 750. All of these prices are without tax and the watches can be ordered now.

The Crazy People From HYT Are Back With A Quirky Rainbow Hastroid
HYT has a complicated story. It made outrageous watches that polarized the community. Some argue that the watches were too out there and that there is not a big enough market for them. Those people might have been right, as HYT went bankrupt in 2021. But only a year later later, the brand is revived and it’s return is marked by the Hastroid, a watch with familiar mechanics and the HYT signature move - using fluids to display time. HYT has always been known for bold designs that incorporate flashy colors. Now they go a step further with all the colors of the rainbow on the HYT Hastroid Rainbow.
The HYT Hastroid Rainbow comes with all the features of the existing Green Nebula, Supernova Blue or Cosmic Hunter models. Measuring 48 mm in diameter and over 17mm in thickness, it has a length of 52mm. The case’s multi-layer “sandwich-like” construction also integrates cut-out areas on the sides with grilles. The dial and display have also been redefined with more depth and a complex multi-part structure. Composed of 43 components, the dial has an openworked, textured structure revealing most of the mechanical elements, and both the mechanical section (on top) and the fluidic section (the bellows on the lower part and the capillary tube around the dial) are entirely visible.
Powering the HYT Hastroid is the calibre HYT 501-CM. Made of two separate modules connected by a lever, the upper side is dedicated to timekeeping and is a hand-wound movement running at 4Hz with a power reserve of 72 hours. It is also the driving force for the fluidic indication, giving its power and delivering a constant displacement to act on the motion of the fluids, thanks to an oversized lever and a curved feeler-spindle. This sensor transforms the circular motion of the movement’s wheels into a linear motion that pushes the bellow.
That’s all that remains the same. For the Rainbow, HYT has gone all out on color. The case is made from multi-layer carbon fibre with a profile in matte black DLC-coated titanium. It is worn on a bright, bold purple rubber strap with black inlay. The rainbow effect is applied to the dial’s grille using tinted Zapon lacquer. Each dial is individually executed by Yan Patriarca, a lacquering expert. Each colour is sprayed by hand, in several layers, and with an imperceptible gradient effect. In addition, the fluid contained in the capillary tube is black, and when it moves around the coloured dial, it gives the impression that it is tinted in the shade assigned to each time slot.
The HYT Hastroid Rainbow is released as a limited edition of 15 pieces and priced at CHF 75,000 (excl. taxes).

New Porsche Design Chronograph Is Exclusive To Owners Of The718 Spyder RS
Contrary to popular belief, Porsche Design is not a subsidiary of Porsche, the car manufacturer. Yes, it is owned by by Porsche SA, the holding company, but technically, the folks over at Porsche Design don’t go around designing Porsche cars. Porsche Design was founded in the early 70s by Butzi Porsche, grandson of Ferdinand Porsche with the idea of creating a Porsche boutique that would create car-themed accessories. Pretty soon, Porsche Design started making watches and the popped up on the radar of both watch lovers and car lovers. So it only made sense for Porsche Design to start making car inspired watches to satisfy this desire from customers.
Porsche Design is still doing the same to this day. And their latest watch is an exclusive one that can only be purchased by owners of the just announced 718 Spyder RS, the car that inspired the watch. The concept of owner-exclusive watches is nothing new for Porsche Design, as they have made watches for and inspired by the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, the 911 GT3 RS and the 911 Dakar.
The base of the watch remains the same as the aforementioned models (save for the Dakar watch, which uses a different base watch), meaning Chronotimer Series 1 architecture, a watch that pays tribute to the earliest models created by the Butzi Porsche in the early 1970s, with a proprietary automatic flyback chronograph movement. The case, made of lightweight bead-blasted titanium, meadures 42mm in diameter, with a height of 14.6mm. You can get it untreated or with a black titanium carbide coating, just like you can get the bezel in natural or black-coated titanium, with either a tachymeter or a 60-minute scale.
The dial retains the classic architecture of the collection and offers a wide range of personalisation options. First, the individual colour ring around the dial can be chosen in all available Spyder RS standard, metallic, and special colours, but also in the 114 additional colours of the paint to sample programme. Then, the dial itself can be chosen in classic matte black or in genuine carbon fibre. Three styles of hands complete this wide range of options, with Performance (white), Essence (black) or GT (yellow) options.
Under the hood is the calibre WERK 01.200, a highly modified Valjoux base, now chronometer-certified and equipped with flyback function. The final touch comes from the oscillating weight designed to look like the wheels of the Spyder RS. Two designs are available – following the look of the classic wheels or the optional lightweight magnesium alloy wheels of the Weissach package – and available in all colours from Porsche – Brilliant Silver, Aluminum satin, Dark Silver, Neodyme, Indigo Blue, and Black. You think that’s a high level of customisation? Yeah, you can also get the VIN of your 718 Spyder RS engraved onto the rotor…
The watch comes on a leather strap with black Race-Tex inlay and Spyder RS logo embossed, and a titanium bracelet can also be specified. If you’re a owner of the new Porsche 718 Spyder RS, you can get your watch now at a starting price of EUR 9,500.

Singer Introduces The Reimagined Track 1 Endurance Edition 24h Chronograph, Ready To Time The 24 Hours of Le Mans
Speaking of Porsche, especially unique Porsche’s, there’s no other name you need to know other than Singer. The Californian company takes already awesome Porsche models from the late 80s and early 90s, strip them to their core and restore it to the perfect Porsche, incorporating the best aspect of every generation into bespoke cars that have taken the world by storm. Everybody wants one. Not everybody can afford the rumoured $1 million price tag.
What you might not have known is that Singer makes watches and their latest release is the Track 1 Endurance Edition 24h Chronograph to mark their involvement with the Hertz Team JOTA at the 24h of Le Mans this year.
The new version of the Track 1 is going head on into performance and weigh saving. It is made of titanium and uses the openworked case introduced in the Track1 DLS ( Engineering). The 43mm case, with black-coated bezel, crown and pushers, has been matte finished and coated in golden ZRN. The display of the classic Track 1 has been further developed to enable a dedicated 24-hour chrono function. And to provide the best possible legibility of the time indications, this chronograph is equipped with jumping hours and minutes and a sweeping seconds hand.
Inside nothing much has changed - it’s still the same ultra-complex, ultra-innovative movement as previous editions of the Track1 - the AgenGraphe made by Swiss movement maker Agenhor. The watch comes on a perforated rubber strap closed by a deployant buckle.
Limited to 24 pieces, the Singer Reimagined Track 1 Endurance Edition 24h Chronograph is now available for pre-order from the brand’s website and priced at CHF 70,000 (excl. taxes).

Newly Appointed Bremont CEO Gives First Interview, Talks Brand Direction And Overcoming Existing Challenges
Just a few weeks ago, Bremont announced they were appointing legendary watch executive Davide Cerrato as new CEO. Cerrato is perhaps best known for his tenure at Tudor where he introduced the Black Bay line. Just yesterday he gave an interview to Hodinkee and I want to link to it here as I think it’s a great read if you’re a fan of Bremont. He talks all sorts of stuff - his love for cars and watches, what the recent $59 million investment into Bremont means, his vision for the future, the challenges of finding a "hero product" for the brand, and how to bring "made in England" around the world.

Watch Worthy - A look at an offbeat, less known watch you might actually like

Wilbur Watch Co. LEO, an Area 51 Inspired Watch with a Unique Jumping Hour Display
The LEO, on the one hand, seems wildly impractical at its stated dimensions. And this is obviously an aesthetic that is tough to integrate into an everyday style for most people. But that, as with so many independently made watches that border on the experimental, mechanical art side of the spectrum, is where the charm is. The LEO is probably not an everyday watch, it’s a watch for curious and adventurous watch lovers to pull out of the box when they feel like conjuring a particular mood, maybe after an X-Files binge.

2023.05.22 09:02 -Bonjour-- From Lisbon to Lagos

From my travel report (2013):
Who was once in Lisbon is usually so enthusiastic about this worth seeing city that he always comes back - like us.
This time we had a hotel near the famous Praca Comercial. The Praca Comercial is a very spacious square surrounded by arcades with a flight of steps leading to the Tagus. Most of the government buildings are located here. If you walk from the Rua Augusta to the Praca Comercial, you can see the equestrian statue of King José I through the triumphal arch. The Rua Augusta - from the Praca do Comercio to Rossio - is a pedestrian zone and one of the shopping miles of Lisbon with many small stores and cafes.
We took streetcar No. 28 to the end of the line. From there we took the bus to Largo da Graca and then walked to the Pantheon. Construction of this building, intended as a church, began in the 17th century and was not finished until the 1960s. However, the Igreja de Santa Egracia was never used as a church, but was transformed into the National Pantheon. Here many important Portuguese personalities found their last resting place.
On the way to the Castello, we passed the church of Sao Vicente de Fora with its double towers, consecrated in 1629. The Castelo de Sao Jorge was a fortress in earlier times to guard the mouth of the Tagus River. Until the 16th century it was the royal residence. In the great earthquake of 1755, the castle complex was destroyed, as was almost the entire city.
From the Mirador de Santa Lucia we walked further downhill and came to the medieval cathedral, which was built after the victory over the Moors instead of a mosque. The massive church was built in 1147 and is the oldest structure in the city. Of course, the cathedral has been restored several times in the meantime.
We took the metro to Praca Marqués de Pombal (Rotunda) a circular square with the monument to the Marqués in the center. From there we walked the boulevard of Avenida da Liberdade to Rossio Square. There are still some magnificent old houses along the Avenida, some of which date from the early 19th century.
From Praca Rossio we walked on to Praca dos Restauradores. From there, the Elevador Gloria climbs about 265 meters to Barrio Alto, covering 45 meters of elevation. This funicular is over 100 years old and was operated by steam until 1915, when it was electrified. From the Mirador de Sao Pedro de Alcanera you have a very nice view up to the Castelo Sao Jorge.
On the way back to the Praca do Comercio we passed the city hall "Pacos do Concelho", which was built in 1755 after the great earthquake in neoclassical style. At this place the Republic of Portugal was proclaimed in 1910. After a fire in 1996, the building was extensively restored.
The "Mercado da Ribeira", built in 1876, is located directly on the banks of the Tejo River. This is the oldest and largest indoor market in Lisbon with a wide range of fruits, vegetables and freshly caught fish.
The Alfama is the oldest quarter of Lisbon. There are very well preserved old houses here, as this neighborhood was largely spared in the great earthquake of 1755. In Barrio Alto, the church of Sao Rocque is located on Praca Trindade Coelho an. This Jesuit church has a plain facade but a spectacular interior. With 16th-century azulejo walls and capelas decorated with gold, precious woods, ivory and gems, this church is one of the most glamorous and magnificent in Europe. During the great earthquake of 1755, this church was not destroyed.
In Rua Nova de Trindade you can find a traditional beer house with a traditional cuisine in a former convent with magnificent azulejo walls from the 19th century.
From Lisbon you can easily take the Eléctrico to Belém. And the first thing you will see is the Hieronymite Monastery in Belem "Mosteiro dos Jerónimos". This monastery is one of the most impressive buildings of Lisbon. The construction of the monastery, built in the Manueline style - a variant of the late Gothic - was begun in 1502, but it was not finished until about 40 years later. On the pillars, windows and portals one can see many Indian-oriental motifs. The construction was financed by the flourishing overseas trade of Portugal at that time and also stood for the power and wealth of the country at the time of the discoveries. The monastery existed until 1834, then became an orphanage for a time, and today contains various museums. The double-story cloister is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Also worth seeing are the azulejos in the refectory.
In addition to the sarcophagi of the royal family, there is also that of Vasco da Gama, among others. In 1983, the monastery was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The garden in front of the monastery is very beautiful.
From the monastery you walk through a beautifully landscaped park, past the marble colossus of the Palace of Culture to the Monument of the Discoverers. The Palace of Culture is a large cultural and exhibition center, design museum, art gallery, drama and conference center with constantly changing exhibitions and concerts
The Monument to the Discoverers, a concrete structure 52 meters high, was opened in 1952. It depicts 30 important Portuguese personalities, at the top Henry the Navigator and, of course, Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan, among others - to name the most famous. Inside there is a museum and on the roof there is a viewing platform
You pass the 8 m high lighthouse, which was built in 1865. Also worth seeing is the replica of a seaplane of the type Fairey II-D MKII. In 1922, Portuguese pilots made the first South Atlantic crossing from Lisbon with such a type of aircraft - in several stages and with several planes.
Then, from afar, you can see the 35-meter-high Torre de Belém, gleaming white like a moated castle. The landmark used to stand on an island and guard the entrance to the harbor. Due to the silting up of the river, the tower now stands directly on the banks of the Tagus and greets the arriving ships. The tower was built in 1521, when Portugal was still a leading naval power. On the battlements you can see the cross of the Knights of Christ, oriental and Manueline architectural elements are visible. The tower was also used as a dungeon at times, both by the Spanish conquistadors and by King Miguel as late as the 19th century. The tower, from whose 35 m high observation deck one has a beautiful view, is today a World Heritage Site.
Inaugurated in February 2000, the monument was erected in memory of the fallen Portuguese soldiers in the overseas battles. The names and years of death of the approximately 10,000 fallen soldiers are inscribed on stone plaques on the wall. The monument is a pyramid-shaped glass structure surrounded by water, overall a simple construction. In the center burns an eternal fire and in front of the monument always patrol two soldiers.
If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Lisbon with its many tourists, it is a good idea to take the ferry from the Cais do Sodré next to the train station across the Tagus River to the village of Cacilhas on the opposite side. The round-trip fare is only €2.90. The ferry is used mainly by many locals who live in Cacilhas and work in Lisbon. Once on the other side, the first thing you are excited about is the great view of Lisbon. The place Cacilhas is in and of itself quite modest. But people - especially from the capital - come for the good fish restaurants. At the other end of the village we discovered an old sailing ship right next to a submarine. Above the village is the monumental statue of Christ, erected in 1959, in gratitude for the fact that Portugal - partly because of its neutrality - was largely spared the horrors of World War II.
Only about 40 km from Lisbon and about 20 km from Sintra - also easily accessible by public bus - is the magnificent complex of Mafra - the most important baroque building in Portugal. The PALÁCIO NACIONAL DE MARA - the largest castle and monastery complex in Portugal. As if from nowhere, the palace Convento de Mafra appears imposing and unreal like a backdrop. At the beginning of the 18th century, half the world belonged to the seafaring nation of Portugal, while the dark spirit of the Inquisition reigned in the mother country. In addition to the baroque Franciscan monastery, King Joao V had the palace, a magnificent basilica, a hunting ground of 1187 hectares, an elaborate library and the baroque park "Jardim do Cerco" built for himself and the royal family in record time between 1717 and 1730. The origin of this oversized "monastery-palace" is said to go back to a vow. The king, who was childless until then, vowed to endow a monastery if an heir to the throne was born .An heir to the throne was not born, but nevertheless, after the birth of a daughter, the construction of the monastery began, which is said to have involved up to 45,000 workers and 7,000 soldiers. The palace and the monastery are of enormous dimensions (about 1200 rooms, about 4700 doors, 156 staircases, and 29 patios and has a floor space of 38,000 square meters), comparable to the "Escorial" in Spain this was intended by the king, who was considered very extravagant.
The construction was financed - like so many others in this time - mainly by gold and diamonds from Brazil... The magnificent palace and monastery complex in Mafra was built from 1717 to 1730. Due to high revenues from gold imports from Brazil, the construction of this elaborate complex for more than 300 monks was possible. After the inauguration, construction work continued until 1755.
In 1730, the basilica - as large as a cathedral - was consecrated. The construction of this complex was intended to eclipse Spain's Escorial, and so it is an example of the royal megalomania of that time. The basilica is entirely covered with local marble of different colors. The figures, facades, side chapels and the side altars are made of Italian marble.
The church of the monastery is dedicated to "Saint Anthony" and "Virgin Mary". It has six historical organs from 1807. You can visit the high rooms, halls, the music hall, the ornate library, the hunting room with trophies, the queen's bedroom and the king's private chambers.
The monastery with its simple cells, the dining room, a medieval infirmary, an apothecary and the kitchen of the Franciscans can be reached directly from the castle chambers. Their original equipment and furniture can be visited.
The convent has one of the most important libraries in Portugal - about 40,000 volumes, mainly 18th century knowledge. Architecturally, the library is a work of art. Thousands of precious books and treatises stand on the artistically designed wooden shelves. Among them are rare first editions and other scientific works, many of them bound in leather. The floor is made of marble mosaic
The pretty town of SINTRA lies at the foot of a densely covered rocky mountain range Sintra is an ancient Moorish town and was conquered by the Portuguese in 1147. Since the Middle Ages Sintra was the summer residence of the Portuguese kings and nobility. Apart from the famous and much visited castles, the town also has its charm with the winding streets.
In the center is the National Palace, which was continuously inhabited from the 15th century until the end of the monarchy in 1910. Two huge chimneys rising up from the kitchen are striking.
The extravagant colorfully painted Palacio de Pena, built in 1842, has been called the Neuschwanstein of Portugal - a hodgepodge of styles. The palace sits in the middle of a subtropical park high above Sintra and is surrounded by forests.
The battlemented walls of CASELO DOS MOUROS are clearly visible from Sintra. A steep paved path leads to the castle ruins. From the top you have a beautiful view of the city. This "vantage point" had already been used by the Moors in the 9th century to "keep an eye" on the sea and the region, so to speak. But in the 12th century the fort began to decay, and this was further destroyed by fire and earthquakes in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Just outside Sintra is the famous MONSERRATE PARK. The English millionaire Sir Francis Cook had this park and the castle built in Moorish-Gothic-Indian style in 1856. The whole estate has an area of 50 hectares, the park is about 15 hectares. In addition to about 1000 native plants, Cook imported many exotic specimens - rare trees and shrubs from all over the world. Exotic tree giants grow in this park, there are 25 palm species alone; and the fern trees were imported from Australia by Sir Francis Cook himself.
You can walk along the so-called botanical path, and see the variety of plants. There is a rose garden, a Mexico valley, a Japanese garden, a valley of ferns, and many exotic plants that amazingly could be acclimatized here: Bunya-Bunya tree and rubber tree from Australia, cypress of tears from China, Mexican cypress, etc.
In the palace you can see the main atrium with a beautiful wooden stucco dome, in the center of which there is an alabaster fountain in Moorish-Andalusian tradition. Cook imported Persian carpets, Indian furniture, Japanese vases and valuable porcelain.
The library has walnut shelves, the living room Indian furniture, and Cook acquired a desk that once belonged to the Doge of Venice. There is a music hall and a small chapel. The gallery with arches and columns is also very beautiful.
From Sintra it was not far to CABO DA ROCA - the westernmost point of Portugal. The rough headland with the steep coast is 150 m above sea level. The roaring waves of the Atlantic Ocean thunder against the rugged rocks. The plants growing here must be very hardy because of the salty air and strong winds.
The lighthouse from 1841 has such a strong light that it can still be seen at a distance of about 46 km. At the cape you can see the mighty monument with the cross on the top from far away. The famous Portuguese poet Luis da Camoes (1524-80) wrote the inscription "Where the earth ends and the sea begins".
Nearby is Praia Grande, an extensive sandy beach. The consistent high waves are ideal for surfing and bodysurfing.
From Sintra, our journey continued along the coast to the popular and exclusive beach resorts of CASCAIS and ESTORIL. Between these two places there is a beach promenade.
Both places have developed from small fishing villages to popular resorts. Estoril is still considered a fashionable seaside resort, you can still see many noble old villas and hotels from the 19th century.
From Estoril we went over the Tejo bridge "Ponte de 25 Abril" first to SETUBAL. The city - 32 km south of Lisbon - is located at the mouth of the Sado and is with 95,000 inhabitants the third largest port and industrial city of Portugal.
Worth seeing is the cathedral Santa Maria da Graca from the 16th century with beautiful wall tiles. Above the city is the 16th century Castelo de Sao Filipe, today a luxurious pousada. A ferry takes you to the Troia peninsula with dunes and sandy beaches and many tourist facilities, visited mainly by the Portuguese. Already during the Roman times there was a fishing port here. Today Setubal is a large tourist center with pedestrian zones in the old town and many parks.
From Setubal we drove the coastal road to LAGOS. There we rented a nice apartment directly at the sea. The apartment house is located above the famous beach "Praia do Porto Mós". From the house we could also make a hike on the cliffs above the beach in the direction of Porto Luz, with always beautiful views of the sea. Below our apartment house is the "Praia de Porto Mós", a very long and wide sandy beach.
Lagos is an old port city and was once a transhipment point for slaves from Africa. In the center of the city - Praca da República with a statue of Henry the Navigator - the slave market took place. The first Portuguese voyages of discovery were also made from here.
In the old town is the church "Igreja de Santo Antonio", built in the 18th century in Portuguese Baroque style with gilded carvings in the altar area.
The city walls (Mulralhas) are originally of Carthaginian origin, were first extended by the Arabs, and then again in the 14th and 16th centuries as the city grew larger. The Castelo de Governadores was built in the 14th-16th centuries where an Arab castle once stood.
Although the city was badly damaged by the earthquake in 1755, the old town still has many historic houses with traditional brickwork, wrought-iron balconies and shaded courtyards. In the pedestrian zone you can find numerous restaurants. The marina, on the other hand, has a modern flair with its apartment buildings, stores and restaurants.
The coastal town of Lagos with its many different sandy beaches is now popular and well known and attracts many tourists every year. First of all there is the 7 km long beach "Praia Meia" bordered by dunes in a large bay. There is plenty of parking everywhere, the beach is well suited for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts, and you can also find restaurants everywhere. The beach "Praia Dona Ana" is framed by the famous rock formations of the Algarve. The beach is very busy, and since it is not very big, it can get a bit crowded. From here also the boats start to the grotto trips.
To the "Ponte de Piedade" with the lighthouse you should definitely go. From here you have a beautiful view of the cliffs and some small beaches. E.g. the "Praia do Canavial", which is however badly accessible. Near the Ponte de Piedade there is also the "Praia do Camho". From the parking lot, steps lead to two small sandy beaches connected by a tunnel. The "climb" - especially when it is hot - is quite tedious.
From Lagos we also made a trip to the west. First we drove to LUZ, an idyllic seaside resort in a bay with a sandy beach and a black volcanic rock. There is a beautiful approx. 1 km long beach promenade "Promenade Avenidas dos Pescadores" with the typical Portuguese street pavement. Worth seeing is the village church "Senhora da Luz", built in 1874, simply whitewashed, inside the altar is decorated with wood carvings covered with gold leaf. In the former fortress Fortaleza is now a restaurant.
We continued to BURGAU with a 300 m wide sandy bay. From there, all paths go more or less steeply uphill to get to the village with the houses lying close together. Between the houses are mostly only tiny staircases. The village is still a fishing village, as evidenced by the numerous boats on the beach. There are some restaurants, but most of them are frequented only by locals.
20 km away from Lagos is the old fishing village SALEMA. The beach is surrounded by rocks. In the small center by the sea you can find stores. Restaurants and accommodations. Fortunately the place was not overcrowded yet.
PORTIMAO is a port and industrial city and is located at the mouth of the Rio Arada. After Faro it is the economically most important city of the Algarve. Quite beautiful is the river promenade in Portimao. And people are proud of the shopping center "Aqua Portimao", which was opened in 2011.
In this area, tourism is most pronounced in the Algarve. To the south is the 1.5 km long beach Praia da Roche with mighty, bizarrely shaped boulders. This fine sandy beach has attracted tourists since the turn of the century. Today you can see from the beach the many partly ugly buildings of hotels and apartment houses.
The small fishing village ALVOR has remained more original with its narrow streets and typical Portuguese houses. There is tourist infrastructure, but the Portuguese character has been preserved. The village has beautiful old streets, which can be best explored on foot.
On the lagoon, apart from the new promenade, there is a fishing port with colorful boats. Dunes separate the sea with a beautiful beach from the lagoon and wetlands. Alvor is not constricted by rocky coasts like many other places in the Algarve, so it has a wide long beach.
A beautiful drive took us to the most southwestern end of Europe - to CABO SAO VICENTE, a 100 m long and 37 m wide rocky plateau with a barren cliff about 60 m high. About 2 million visitors come here every year.
Already in the antiquity there was a holy place here, which was consecrated to Saturn. The Christians named this last tip of the mainland - also called the "end of the world" - after Saint Vicente. The fortress (Fortaleza Beliche) was built in the 16th century to protect the Franciscan convent next to it from pirate attacks. The lighthouse at the cape was originally built in 1846, but was gradually enlarged and modernized. The cone of light from the lighthouse can be seen 90 km across the Atlantic Ocean, it is the most luminous in Europe and monitors one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Unfortunately, every year there are also some crashes on the cliff from careless tourists and even local fishermen. Outside there are some souvenir stands and the "unavoidable" "Last Bratwurst before America" - whoever likes it...
On the way to Sagres - with beautiful beaches - you come to FORTALEZA DE SAGRES on a 1000 m long and 300 m wide rock plateau. Inside the former fortress there is said to have been the legendary nautical school of Henry the Navigator. However, no remains are found because it was never located here.....
But in any case, the Portuguese explorers sailed from here into the unknown, and Henry the Navigator also made his discoveries from here. Thus, this area also became the center of seafaring.
The fortress is Portuguese national monument, originally from the 15th century, destroyed by Sir Francis Drake and rebuilt from the 16th century. One enters the fortress through a wide entrance gate with the coat of arms of Henry the Navigator. The first thing you see is a circle with a diameter of 43 meters and 32 spokes carved in stone from the time of Henry the Navigator. Generally, this circle is thought to be a wind rose (Rosa dos Ventos). However, there are also opinions that this could have been a sundial.
On the site there is also the Church of the Virgin of Graces (Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graca) with an image of Saint Vicente, built in the 16th century on the foundations of the Church of Santa Maria. It is recommended to take a walk on a 3 km paved path along the cliff around the rock plateau to enjoy the beautiful views.
In the area of Sagres there are also a large number of megalithic sites that indicate prehistoric past.
The small town of SAGRES is located at the westernmost tip of the Algarve, and in the surrounding area you can experience the roaring sea, see the immense cliffs and swim or surf on the extensive beaches.

2023.05.20 01:33 semirational123 Upgrading Windows XP machine

Hi windowsxp,
Help me upgrade or replace my Windows XP machine! My lab currently uses a tool that has software that runs only on Windows XP (32 bit), so we're committed to the OS. The vendor no longer supports the tool, and the machine vision component is having some intermittent issues when running the software so I'm trying to upgrade it so it can run at its best.
I'd like to more easily identify bottlenecks, but even with HWinfo32 installed I only get usage data on CPU, memory, read/write of HDD. GPU temps don't show and fans always run at 100%. Open to suggestions here
There are two options I'm looking at:
  1. Upgrade the existing PC piecemeal (easier, but more limited in capability)
  2. Buying/Building a new(er) PC that has the best components that natively support XP
Budget isn't really an issue since these components are older, up to 2k would be totally fine
Current build:

For Option 1 of piecemeal upgrading, I'm thinking the following:
For Option 2 in my brief research, looks like my options are:
Thanks!

2023.05.17 17:25 Odd_Incident8743 First trip Itinerary help, please...

I am planning a 4 day trip to Yellowstone (as part of a larger trip) at the end of July for my family (45F, 44M, 17M) and would like input on my proposed itinerary. We have not done a national park/hiking trip before and we are probably just this side of being physically fit. If it appears that there is too much listed for a day, I would appreciate feedback on which stops should be cut along the way. Thank you!
We are staying in the park (already booked) and will try to get out as early as possible each day, but honestly we are not early risers, so out by 8am would probably be the earliest we could reliably do. But we do plan to stay out as long as possible throughout the day.
Day 1 - From Cody, drive the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway -> Beartooth Highway into the NE Entrance, stopping in Cooke City for lunch. Drive the Lamar Valley with a stop to hike Trout Lake. Continue to Tower - Roosevelt and down to Tower Falls. Backtrack to Tower - Roosevelt for the Old West Dinner @ 4:45pm. After dinner drive to Canyon Village (for 2 nights).
Day 2 - Canyon Village to Virginia Cascade drive, Artist Paint Pots, Norris Geyser Basin, north the Mammoth with a few pull offs on the way, Upper and Lower Terraces with late lunch in Mammoth (either the terrace grill or a picnic). Continue north for the Roosevelt Arch and work our way back toward Tower - Roosevelt stopping to hike: Undine Falls (shorter hike), Wraith Falls, Forces of the North Range and Hellroaring (to the suspension bridge and back). We'll also do the Blacktail Plateau drive. Stopping again in Tower - Roosevelt for dinner at the Lodge (no reservation needed). Potentially driving back out to Lamar Valley for animal watching at sunset otherwise, drive back down to Canyon Village for the night.
Day 3 - Canyon area north and south rim trails (North rim - Brink of the Lower Falls, Lookout Point, Grand View and Inspiration Point (driving between), South rim -Upper Falls View and hike out to Point Sublime (via Artist's Point and back), south to the Mud Volcano Area, picnic lunch at Nez Perce Ford Picnic Area, continue south to the Bridge Bay Marina for the Lake Yellowstone scenic cruise @ 2:30pm, continue to the West Thumb Geyser Basin and then down to Grant Village (for 2 nights). We may possibly try to back track to the Fishing Bridge for my husband and son to fish before heading to West Thumb.
Day 4 - Grant Village to Kepler Cascades, Firehole Lake Drive, Firehole Canyon Drive, the Lower Geyser Basin, Midway Geyser Basin - incl. Overlook hike, Biscuit Basin, Black Sand Basin, Upper Geyser Basin - north to Morning Glory Pool back down to Old Faithful. Dinner reservation at Old Faithful Inn. Return to Grant Village for the night.
Day 5 - We will drive through Grand Teton National Park on our way down to Rocky Mountain National Park stopping in Rock Springs, WY overnight.
I'll also keep checking for Ranger led activities at Canyon and Grant for nighttime entertainment if we aren't completely exhausted from the day. Thank you again for any feedback on our route.

2023.05.16 18:37 summero9 Need Tips for Improving One-Person Operation of Boat Slip

Looking for advice on improving my boat slip setup in NJ, specifically the leaving and arriving process. We've had a few different boats over the last 20 years and have experience in driving and tying up, but things are just still suboptimal compared to what we hear and see from folks at other marinas with finger piers, floating docks, etc.
Our Grady White Freedom 235 is in a fixed-height, four-piling slip with neighboring boats on both sides, without anything bordering. Nobody across the marina has finger piers except for a lucky few at the ends of the dock. We deal with boat wake from a nearby channel (intercoastal waterway in the bay) with no breakwall, almost always a prevailing 10mph wind from the north or south, and ~4-feet of tidal change. Real ideal stuff!
We tie up bow-in (southeast-facing), using crossed bow lines and stern lines (likely will move to cross this season), with a port bow spring line, and a starboard stern spring line. Additionally, we also run two taut "runner" lines from the dock out to the stern pilings, which we use as grab lines when coming in. I've made a cruddy diagram to be found here to illustrate the setup.
What can we do to improve our setup? We have long padded fenders along the stern pilings to prevent any rubbing/bumping, but still always find ourselves struggling with having enough hands to mitigate wake, wind, and prop walk. It's a classic scene in this marina to see boats coming in slow and organized, and still finding themselves halfway into the next slip over struggling with getting all lines on rapidly without drift.
I've considered buying piling rollers to help guide the boat in/out, while also having considered using a mix of bungeed lines clipped to the runners to help place the boat in a suspension state when we have a mix of all conditions going on.
Any thoughts? Overcomplicating things? Rely on the rubrail and recognize that cursing a bunch upon entry and exit is just the nature of this marina?
Thank you for any thoughts - appreciate in advance.

2023.05.16 09:05 -Bonjour-- 2000 km road trip through Poland

A GPS is very recommendable in Poland, because the place names are signposted almost only in Polish.
Our first destination was in BRESLAU (Wroclaw), where we stayed in a modern hotel, a bit outside the center, but easily accessible on foot or by streetcar. Across from the hotel is the Sky Tower, built only in 2006-2013, with offices, apartments and stores, the tower is the second tallest building in Poland at 212 meters.
The Oder metropolis Wroclaw - also called "Venice of the North" - is the fourth largest city in Poland with 640,000 inhabitants. The city was once the richest trading city of the German East.Wroclaw was 70% destroyed during the 2nd World War. Reconstruction by Polish reconstructionists and craftsmen gave the city its present beautiful appearance and offers visitors a wide range of cultural and tourist attractions. The city of "100 bridges" was "European Capital of Culture" in 2016.
On the way from the hotel to the center we saw the music theater "Capitol", which was inaugurated only in September 2013. Then on one street we noticed two groups of figures cast in bronze. The group on one side of the street descends into the abyss to reappear on the other side of the street. The "Transition" groups 1977-2005 represent the symbol of the fall of communism and the rise to democracy.
The center of the city is the 175 x 212 m large market square (Rynek) onto which 11 streets flow. In the center of the square is the magnificent Old Town Hall, built in the 14th century in Gothic and Renaissance styles - a valuable architectural monument for Poland. The late Gothic south facade with elaborately designed windows is particularly beautiful. On the ornate central gable you can see an astronomical clock from 1580. Today the building houses a museum.
The market square is surrounded by magnificent renovated town houses. An imposing sight is the Elizabeth Church on the Rynek (Market Square) in Gothic style made of brick. The present three-nave basilica was built in the early 14th century. The church has almost 2000 seats and is one of the largest churches in Poland. The checkerboard tiled roof was created during the renovation in 1890-93. Fortunately, the church was only slightly damaged during World War 2. The tower was originally 130 m high, but it collapsed in 1529 due to storm and hail. In 1535 the new tower was built with "only" 86 m. Inside, the Baroque high altar from 1653 and the richly decorated choir stalls are particularly impressive. The two narrow houses next to the church are popularly called "Hansel and Gretel".
A square worth seeing is the Salt Market (Plac Solny) with the beautiful patrician houses. There, florists sell bouquets and arrangements in gorgeous colors. Numerous restaurants line the market square, e.g. the "Schwednitzer Cellar" (Piwnica Swidnicka) in the town hall or the brewery "Spiz", where beer has been brewed for 500 years and the food is plentiful and good.
It was not easy to find the market hall, which was built in Art Nouveau style at the beginning of the 20th century. But if you show on the map where "Hala Targowa" is, somehow "with your hands" you are told how to get there. At the market there were fruits and vegetables in abundance, with a conspicuous number of berry varieties. What was particularly striking was the large selection of grave wreaths, grave decorations, etc. The mostly Catholic inhabitants of Poland are often very devout, and therefore have a special way of dealing with their dead. The graves are decorated with elaborate wreaths and arrangements.
The city center includes not only the Old Town but also Sand Island and Cathedral Island. To go to the two islands, we got on the streetcar at the hotel and, with the help of locals, got off at the right place....On Sand Island (Wyspa Piasek) stands the mighty church of "Mary on the Sand", a brick Gothic building built in 1334-1425. The church was rebuilt after it was badly damaged in WW2. We then crossed the cast-iron Cathedral Bridge to reach the Cathedral Island (Mos Tumski). The Cathedral Island is the oldest part of Wroclaw, apart from the churches it is also the seat of the Archbishop and the clergy, and is thus the spiritual center of Wroclaw. First you come to the double church "To the Holy Cross", which is actually a triple church: namely Lower Church, Cross Church and Upper Church. In a privileged location directly above the Oder River is the Archbishop's Palace with its beautiful garden..
The most imposing building on the Cathedral Island is the Cathedral in brick Gothic style, also called the Cathedral "John the Baptist". A first church was built here already in the year 1000, the present cathedral is the fourth. The present three naves in the style of a basilica date from the 14th century, both towers from the 15th century. The cathedral was rebuilt after the heavy destruction in the 2nd World War after 1945. Inside the church, the sacristy and the Lady Chapel are particularly worth seeing. The cathedral has a total of 20 chapels. On the baroque altar you can see reliefs made of alabaster. After visiting the interior of the church, we took an old elevator in one of the towers to a viewing platform. From there you have a beautiful view of Wroclaw and the Oder River. The elevator is operated by an older man, if you want to go down again, you have to ring the bell
What do you do at 36° in the Oder metropolis Wroclaw? A boat tour on the Oder! The boat tours start every hour from the Sand Island (Wyspa Piasek) and take about 1 hour there and back. First, you pass Cathedral Island - which is actually not an island because of the 19th-century filling in of an arm of the Oder River - with beautiful views of the Holy Cross Church, the Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace. One passes the National Museum and various university buildings. From far away you can see the impressive blue Emperor's Bridge (Grunwaldzki Bridge). This steel bridge with two mighty granite piers was built in 1910. Fortunately, the banks of the Oder are still natural with bushes, trees and reeds. Very quickly you leave the houses behind. On one of the banks in the middle of nature we saw an accumulation of caravans - probably either Roma or dropouts.
On weekends, the boat goes up to Hala Slulecia (or Hala Ludwoa) - the Hall of the Century - a World Heritage Site. This building, erected in 1913, was the world's largest domed structure made of reinforced concrete at the time. A festival hall is located here, and exhibitions are held. The hall was built for the 100th anniversary of the liberation from Napoleonic rule. At that time it was the largest reinforced concrete dome in the world. It was used as a concert hall and a sports hall, exhibitions are held there. The hall is the center of the exhibition center. Adjacent to the hall is a monumental pergola, which also includes a small artificial lake. In the middle of it is the Wroclawska Fontanna (Fountain), where (especially in summer) modern sound-light-laser installations can be seen after dark. Also in 1913, the Japanese Garden was established on this site. In front of the hall you can see the "Steel Needle", which is about 100 meters high. This was erected in 1948 after the expulsion of the German inhabitants and the resettlement of Poles (many from Lviv in Ukraine) who had also been expelled from their homeland.
From Wroclaw we drove to WARSAW (Warszawa), where we booked into an art deco hotel in the center. After Wroclaw, Warsaw seems very "sober" at first. The city with its 1.7 million inhabitants is not only the capital - in 1596 the residence of Sigismund II was moved from Krakow to Warsaw - but the cultural, economic and political center of Poland. Warsaw is situated on both sides of the Vistula River, connected by numerous bridges. On the wide streets of the city is a busy car traffic. Warsaw is still experiencing a construction boom, with many modern buildings and skyscrapers being built. But there are also prefabricated quarters and monumental buildings of Stalinist architecture.
During World War II, there was severe suffering especially in this city: the Polish population was oppressed by the Nazis, the Jews were first sent to the ghetto or were immediately murdered in Auschwitz, as were numerous Polish intellectuals. Especially after the Warsaw Uprising on August 1, 1944, 90% of the city was systematically destroyed by the Nazis.Reconstruction was a masterstroke, and Warsaw is now the most important commercial and economic center in Central and Eastern Europe. In the center of the city dominates the 230 m building "Palace of Culture and Science", despite many skyscrapers around it still the tallest building in Poland with 42 floors, 3288 rooms and almost 900,000 cubic meters of enclosed space . The monstrous building - completed in 1955 - was an official gift from Stalin and the Soviet Union to the Polish people. But the Poles rather saw it as an unloved symbol of power of the Russians for almost 45 years of oppression and called it "Stalin's thorn". Nowadays, this building is nevertheless considered a landmark of the city.
In the Culture Palace there are the Tourist Information, theaters, cinemas, exhibition rooms and the Museum of Technology. On the 30th floor is an observation deck, from where you have a beautiful view of Warsaw in good weather. Since 2000, the building has the world's highest tower clock, the hands are about 6 meters long. Across the street is the city's main train station and next to it, under a glass dome, is the new shopping center "Golden Terraces" with 239 stores, including all the world's famous labels."Stare Miasto" is the oldest part of the city, dating back to the 13th century, and the most important sight of Warsaw. The richest citizens lived here because they were protected by the city walls. The Old Town was 90% destroyed in the 2nd World War, most of the buildings have been reconstructed, the reconstruction took many decades (since 1980 Unesco World Heritage Site).
The "Nowy Swiat" is the Warsaw promenade with restaurants and stores - full of life with many passers-by. There we ate our first "Pierogi" in a small restaurant. The "Nowy Swiat" goes over into the "Krakowskie Przedmiescie", on this street is also the university, founded in 1816, nowadays consisting of many buildings, as it is the largest educational institution in Poland with about 260,000 students. One of the many university buildings is the former Potkanski Palace. Also on this street is the Church of St. Joseph, built in the mid-18th century.
On the "Krakowski Przedmiescie" there is also the Presidential Palace (since 1994). This magnificent building is also called "Palais Radziwill", after one of the owners of this building. The beginning of construction was in 1643, but it was frequently rebuilt. The palace remained in private ownership for a long time. The equestrian statue in front of it depicts Prince Jozef Poniatowski (1763-1813), commander-in-chief of the Polish army and marshal of France, who specifically supported Polish independence. Warsaw has especially many monuments, on this street you can see, among others, the monument to the Polish poet of Romanticism Adam Mickiewicz. A famous building is the Bristol Hotel, built in 1900, always a meeting place of important guests in the capital.
Then, finally, you come to the Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy) with the 22-meter-high Sigismund Column. King Sigismund made a special effort to make Warsaw the capital of Poland. The Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski) was the official seat of Polish kings since the end of the 16th century. The castle with its plain facade was also rebuilt with donations from the population after the heavy damages during the 2nd World War. Inside, the Marble Room and the Senator's Hall are the most beautiful rooms. In the castle garden we had the opportunity to have a look at the Vistula River, at least from a distance. Around the castle square there are numerous restaurants and cafes. In the middle of the square there is a bronze sculpture with Warsaw's coat of arms. This square was the center of city life from the 13th to the 19th century. The completely destroyed burgher houses with their three-striped facades, gabled roofs and colorful wall decorations were rebuilt in the 1950s in keeping with their style.
Hop-on hop-off buses in Warsaw run only hourly, and then - because of traffic congestion - they are not very punctual. So you would have to allow an hour for a stop - so one day would hardly be enough. So we had no choice but to use this bus for a city tour without getting off, to at least get an overview of the city and its sights. We passed the Alexander Church, built in 1818-25 on the model of the Roman Pantheon. This church building was realized for the visit of Tsar Alexander I because of the newly founded Kingdom of Poland. The Wisniowiecki Palace on Bankowy Square was built in the Italian Renaissance style from 1825-1830 and was privately owned for many years. Today it houses the city administration and the official residence of the mayor. Impressive from the bus was the old city wall, the construction of which began in the 14th century and lasted over 200 years, and a large part of which survived the 2nd World War. The bus passed the Presidential Palace, for many years private property. Since 1994 it has been the official residence of the Polish president.
At the time of the Nazi invasion in World War 2, there were about 350,000 Jews living in Warsaw, which was one third of the population, west of the Old and New Towns. This area later formed the ghetto when all Jews had to move here. In November 1944, a wall was erected, thus sealing off the ghetto from the rest of the city. Almost half a million people had to live here under terrible living conditions (epidemics, hunger, arbitrariness). From 1942, most of the inhabitants were taken from the Umschlagplatz (a memorial wall was erected here in 1988) to one of the concentration camps.
The Monument to the Ghetto Heroes was unveiled on the 5th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Jewish Uprising in April 1948. Willy Brandt's genuflection on the occasion of his visit to Poland in December 1970 also took place here. Next to it is the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
We also passed the monument to the "Warsaw Uprising of 1944". After the bus passed the new large shopping mall "Arkadia", we also passed the oldest Catholic cemetery "Cmentarz Powazkowski", which has existed for 200 years, where some of the most famous Poles rest, and then the Jewish cemetery from 1806. Here there are about 200,000 graves on an area of about 33 hectares. This cemetery was hardly damaged in the 2nd World War.
The Monument to the Poles who died and were murdered in the East, to Poles deported to forced camps in Siberia and to the victims of Katyn was erected in 1995.
In retrospect, Warsaw surprised us in a positive way. It is a lively city with many young people.
Our trip continued in the direction of Masuria.
The region of Mazury in the northeastern part of Poland borders on the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, the southern part is in the former East Prussia. It is the land of 3000 lakes, in the middle of the large lake plateaus lie the towns of Gizycko and Mikolajki.
In the untouched nature there is a unique flora and fauna: mixed forests, clear lakes, numerous rivers and canals, ponds and swamps, many species of birds and species-rich wild meadows with rare plants.
The history of Masuria is similar to that of many border regions of Europe, influenced by different ethnic groups and cultures. From the 9th to the 14th/15th century, pagan Pruzes lived here. With the foundation of the Teutonic Order, the bloody crusades against this people began.
Craftsmen and merchants from Germany and Holland settled here. In the middle of the 16th century came the Reformation. Masuria suffered from the Nordic Wars and the plague. Since 1870 there was an increased Germanization. With the 2nd World War and especially after it began the expulsion and persecution of the local population, and other expellees arrived from the Polish Eastern territories, Belarus, Ukraine and Lithuania.
After a good three-hour drive from Warsaw - partly highway - we arrived in Olsztyn (ALLENSTEIN) around noon. With a lot of traffic on the normal roads, we sometimes were overtaken "criminally".
Allenstein has about 175,000 inhabitants, the capital of Masuria and Warmia is also the cultural and economic center. The city is embedded in a charming landscape with 15 lakes, the river Lyna and many small canals. The largest lake with 412 ha is the so-called city lake "Jezioro Ukiel".
The center of the city is the picturesque Rynek with baroque town houses, arcades, numerous cafes and beer gardens. The High Gate (Brama Wysoka), built in 1378, was at times an armory and prison. This is the only preserved of the original three gates - the town's landmark. Nowadays there is a simple hostel there. The extensively renovated 14th century Order Castle an is the historical core of today's town. From 1516-21 Nicolaus Copernicus was the administrator of the cathedral chapter here, and he defended the town against the Knights of the Teutonic Order in 1521. Some exhibition rooms commemorate the famous astronomer. The complex has been accessible from the city only since the middle of the 18th century. North of the old town is the Lutheran Church built in 1877 and the Jacobi Cathedral built at the end of the 14th century ,
We continued to NIKOLAIKEN (Mikolajki), originally a small fishing village, now a well-known vacation resort in Masuria. our hotel is located directly on Lake Nikolaiken, very idyllic and quiet.Nikolaik is a small town with only 3800 inhabitants, but nevertheless it seems to be the "sailing capital" of Masuria. Water sports are possible on three lakes around Nikolaik: Lake Nikolaik (Jez Mikolajski), Lake Spirding (Jez Smiendwy) and Lake Talty (Jez Talty). The town is a base of the "White Fleet" and an important water sports center, which can be seen in the marina with many boats. There are numerous hotels, guesthouses and apartments in all price ranges, as well as camping sites. On the lake promenade and around the market square with its fountain you can find stores, restaurants and cafes. Boat tours are offered on the lake, but only in good weather and if enough people want to go.
The GPS was programmed to get to Lötzen (Gizycko), because the roads are sometimes not signposted or only in Polish. We passed through small villages with old farmhouses and drive on small roads with avenues of trees, mostly lime trees - where else can you find something like that? It is said that Masuria is rich in landscape but poor in economy.
The place LÖTZEN between Lake Löwentin (Niegocin) and Lake Mauersee (Mamry) is a popular place for sailors. GIZYCKO - also called the summer capital of Poland - is the biggest town in the middle of the Masurian lakes. There are 100 lakes all around, partly connected by canals. So the best conditions for water sports - sailors, windsurfers, canoeists, etc. Of course there are also many hiking trails.
From Nikolaiken we went on to ELBING (Elblag). Our GPS sent us quasi "through field, forest and meadows". The streets were partly in bad condition, thereby quite narrow, fortunately hardly traffic. But on the other hand it was so that we could really enjoy this beautiful area: the forests with birches and oaks, the linden avenues, now and then a small lake and tiny villages - it was really somehow "between nowhere and nowhere"...
The city of Elblag has 130,000 inhabitants, it is located not far from the Vistula Lagoon. The Vistula Lagoon is separated from the Gdansk Bay by the Vistula Spit. As early as 1237 the Crusaders established a fortified settlement here. Elblag - as it was called then - received the town charter in 1246 and became one of the Hanseatic towns on the Baltic Sea. The city was the second largest in East Prussia, and experienced an economic boom in the 19th century through tobacco cultivation, as well as ship and locomotive building.
During World War 2, Elblag was completely destroyed, and reconstruction is still ongoing. There are only a few restored streets and still many gaps between buildings. The new buildings must be architecturally adapted to the old style. Some of the streets and alleys in the old town are still in poor condition, with large puddles forming everywhere during heavy rain. On the other hand, one can see the upswing in the number of new restaurants, all of which are run by young people.
In the course of the last few years, more industry has settled here again: Machine and turbine construction, clothing, wood and food industries. Also important is the inland port on the Oberland Canal south of the city, from where ships also sail to the Vistula Lagoon and on to Kaliningrad.
Our hotel is also located in the historical core of the city in a beautiful reconstructed burgher house. From the middle of the 16th century the kings of Poland, Sweden and Prussia as well as the Russian tsar stayed here. In the "Stary Rynek" you can find restaurants and stores as well as the town hall.
A landmark in the city is the massive Gothic Church of St. Nicholas from the 13th century with its 96 m high tower. The church got its name after the patron saint of sailors. The interior of the church is well worth seeing with beautiful colorful windows, the Renaissance pulpit, the bronze baptismal font and the triptych from 1510.
Not to be overlooked is the Market Tower (Brama argowa), a remnant of the former city wall. The tourist information office is located there on the upper floor. In the summer, various events are also held in the tower. From the tower we saw the mighty former St. Mary's Church, built by Dominican monks, which today houses a very famous contemporary gallery.
Elblag is also famous for the Upperland Canal, which runs 82 km from here to Ostróda. The canal from the 19th century connects several lakes, and the height difference of 99 m is overcome with locks. Ships are loaded onto rail cars and transported by elevator to the next body of water. The trip takes a total of 11 hours.
FRAUENBURG (Frombork) - located on the Vistula Lagoon - received its town charter in 1310, it is only about 20 km from the Russian border and about 70 km from Kaliningrad. At the beginning of the 17th century, a commercial port was built, but it could not compete with the port of the Hanseatic city of Elblag. So only a landing place for fishing boats remained.
This town became famous mainly because of Nicolaus Copernicus. The astronomer lived here from 1517 until his death on May 24, 1593. For a long time it was not clear whether Copernicus was actually buried in the cathedral. It was not until 2005 that archaeologists found his remains under a floor slab during excavations there. A tomb was erected in the cathedral in honor of the famous astronomer.
in the bell tower opposite the Gothic cathedral on the cathedral hill there is a planetarium with Foucalt's pendulum. The 46.5 kg sphere hangs from a 28 m long steel cable. Copernicus developed the heliocentric - the sun is the center of the earth - theory, which states that the earth revolves around the sun once a year, and that day and night occur because the earth revolves around its own axis. These teachings of Copernicus were widely accepted over the years, including by Galileo. The latter was condemned as a heretic because he could not produce any proof, and later publicly recanted. It was not until 1851 that the Frenchman Foucault demonstrated in Paris the correctness of Copernicus' theory of the earth's rotation with a freely swinging pendulum. A heavy ball on a long rope traveled over the ground - but it is the ground itself that is rotating.
You can climb up the bell tower and from there you have a beautiful view - depending on the weather - of the small town of Frombork, the Vistula Lagoon and, of course, especially the cathedral. Next to the massive baroque bell tower you can see the small fortified tower, the oldest part of the fortification ring, here was supposedly the study and observatory of Copernicus.
The Cathedral Hill (Wzgorze Katedralne) is surrounded by a defensive wall and has a large main gate. The Bishop's Palace with the Copernicus Museum is also worth seeing.
Many died in the battle of Tannenberg 1410, but the Marienburg could be held. After political and economic crises and a revolt of the subjects, Marienburg Castle went to the Polish king Casimir Jagello in 1457. For three centuries alternately ruled here.
The cathedral with the eight-bay nave was built on the so-called Cathedral Hill from 1329-1388 and was repeatedly expanded and rebuilt over time. It is remarkable that the cathedral has only four ornamental towers at the corners. The rich interior decoration of the cathedral from different centuries is a mix of Baroque and Rococo styles.
The ceiling of the nave looks like a star vault. On the side you can see the beautiful old main altar "Mother of God with Child". The new late Baroque main altar is made of black marble. To the left and right of the nave are the many altars. Also magnificent is the organ from 1684 and the altar of St. Anne.
Almost half a million people tried to escape across the Vistula Lagoon at the end of World War II, many drowned, others died in ice and snow. Outside the park there has been a memorial stone for the 30,000 victims of this escape for several years.
Unfortunately, the weather became worse and worse, it started to rain heavily. Nevertheless, we took a look at the city of Frombork, which was 80% destroyed after WW2. In the small harbor the boats were bobbing around. And when I wanted to take a look at the Frische Haff, I got dripping wet - despite my umbrella.
From Elblag we drove in the direction of Gdansk, but on the way we made a stop at the world-famous Marienburg. From Elblag we did not have far to the MARIENBURG (Malbork). When asked, we were told that the Marienburg has about 500,000 visitors a year.
Marienburg (Malbork) - a work of art of fortified and residential architecture of the late Middle Ages - is considered to be the largest brick work built by man. The world's largest Gothic castle complex occupies an area of about 21 hectares, the volume of the buildings totals over 250,000 cubic meters. The castle is one of the most impressive buildings I have seen.
First you arrive in the bustling city of Marienburg (Malbork) with about 39,000 inhabitants, which was founded as early as the 13th century. From the center you can see the mighty castle complex from afar: the Marienburg of the Teutonic Knights of the Teutonic Order, which is of course a Unesco World Heritage Site. The town and the castle are situated on the Nogat River, an estuary of the Vistula.
Marienburg Castle became the most important part of the German Order's fortification system in Prussia. In 1300 the castle became the seat of the Grand Masters and was massively expanded. In the 14th century it took the form of a three-part fortification: the high castle (monastery), the middle castle (seat of the Grand Master) and the outer castle (farm buildings). Marienburg became the diplomatic, military, economic and religious center. Knights from many European countries gathered here for banquets and tournaments.
The army of the Order was defeated by the Polish-Lithuanian forces in the Battle of Tannenberg in 1410. The Polish and Prussian rulers ruled here alternately. After the first partition of Poland in 1772 the fortress went to Prussia. It was not until 1945 that Mariánské Lázn? became Polish again.
In the last phase of the Second World War, Mariánské Lázn? suffered severe destruction and was rebuilt from the ruins over time. The castle continues to be the subject of intensive restoration work. Malbork became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
Nowadays, the fortress on the Nogat River belongs to the Malbork Castle Museum, which was founded in 1961. The 20-hectare castle complex is surrounded by mighty walls and moats. The most commonly used building material was ceramic products - bricks and ceramic details made of clay. The foundations of the castle as well as the gate portals and door frames - especially exposed to enemy attacks - were built of granite - about 4500 cubic meters of granite were needed. All the material was brought by oxcarts. Foundations had to be dug, water conditions had to be regulated, bricks and roof tiles had to be baked, timber had to be brought in and processed, metals had to be smelted and glass and other building materials had to be produced. The many people who worked here had to be fed and housed. It was a huge undertaking for that time.
In the north, the Marienburg is surrounded by the outer castle, which occupies the largest area. Here there were once stables, storehouses, workshops and apartments for servants. The largest complex is the so-called Karwan, which used to be a coach depot. After extensive conservation work, it now houses a conference room and the museum library, and on the first floor a beautiful medieval hall.
The main gate for the eastern entrance to the outer castle is flanked by two towers. The Lower Rose House and the tower above the bakery, together with the main gate and the karwan, belonged to the eastern defensive wall of the outer castle designed in the 14th century.
The economic ensemble with the Laurentius Chapel, the former firmarie for servants and the bath tower was created during a castle extension at the end of the 14th century. This complex was destroyed in the 2nd World War and rebuilt only in recent years. Today it houses a hotel with a restaurant.
Bullets and cannon barrels were cast in the 14th century foundry. In different phases of the castle expansion, the Buttermilk Tower was built in 1330-40 and the Square Tower in 1310-1311. The construction of the representative middle castle started in 1309.
The central castle is accessed via a drawbridge and a system of gates. First you pass through a gate with a portcullis and over a weir bridge, then there is a system of four gates and a portcullis, which were supposed to block the access to the castle as well as protect the castle courtyard from attackers.
The buildings are grouped around a large rectangular courtyard. The courtyard leads to the Grand Master's Palace, a representative building in the form of a tower with the Great Remter. In front of the Remter there is a staircase, so that the Grand Masters could go directly from their chambers to this hall. Here banquets were held for knights who had taken part in the campaigns against the pagans. On the first floor there is the chapter house and rooms that were used as chanceries.
In the Middle Ages, in the small courtyard in front of the Great Remter, there were entrances to the most important rooms of the representative complex: St. Catherine's Chapel, the Grand Master's chambers and the main entrance to the Great Remter.
After the renovation, the palace rooms can be admired again, because especially the Summer and Winter Remter in the Gothic style with large rectangular windows and magnificent vaulting were considered the most beautiful ceremonial rooms in all of Europe at the end of the 14th century. The renovation works were long and costly.
In the north wing were the living and working rooms for the grand commander, as well as a hospital and old people's home for the knights. Today the working rooms for the castle museum are located here. In the western part there was the dining room, kitchen and pantry. In some of the halls there are collections of utilitarian art from the Polish period. On the first floor there were, among others, a bathhouse and sickrooms.
The east wing was used as a guest room wing in the Middle Ages, there were large and small guest rooms and a guest chapel. In the eastern wing there is the halberd hall. Exhibits and items from amber collections are displayed here, as well as items made of 17th and 18th century amber from Gdansk and Königsberg workshops. There are also collections of porcelain, period furniture and weapons.
in the southern part, on 2 floors, there are exhibitions of military objects, including medieval armor and swords. In one room you can see a modern collection of weapons. Inlaid firearms - duelling pistols and hunting rifles - are displayed in showcases.
To the south of the Middle Castle is the High Castle, connected by two oak bridges. The entrance gate to the High Castle is the oldest in the whole castle. The quadrangular courtyard is surrounded by two-story Gothic cloisters, from here doors lead to almost all rooms in this part of the fortress. In the center of the courtyard there is a fountain.
The square four-winged high castle is the oldest part of the castle. On the first floor there are economic rooms. In the west wing you can see huge oak elements for the windmill drive. In front of the entrance to the kitchen are typical millstones for grinding pearl barley. The kitchen and bakery are located in the west wing. There is an elevator here for transporting food directly to the dining room. Next to the stove and flue you can see an exhibition of historical kitchen utensils and crockery.
On the upper floor were the most important rooms for the convent and religious state - the Chapter House, St. Mary's Church and the Great Remter. In the latter, up to 400 guests could be entertained, it was one of the largest halls in Europe at that time.
In the Chapter House on the 1st floor the Grand Masters were elected and all important decisions were made. On the walls there are benches for the participants of these meetings.
The dormitories - dormitories of the knights - were located in the south and east wings. A long corridor leads to the dansker - toilet facility of the castle built above the Nogat River in a tower above running water. In earlier times, the water flowing underneath here flushed all sewage into the Nogat. In the south and east wings there are more dormitories and an exhibition of medieval exhibits - the most precious the altar from 1504 - from the destroyed castle church,
Further upstairs is the remter with a cross-ribbed vault on seven pillars and large ogival windows. Worth seeing is the medieval tiled floor with various motifs, the chimney frieze and the painting "The Last Supper". Another large room is the convent hall.
On the second floor there is the convent room (dining and meeting room). On the first floor you can reach the "Golden Gate", a ceramic portal from the end of the 13th century, which leads to St. Mary's Church. This church was renovated only in the last few years. The choir stalls and the wooden high altar are parts from the Middle Ages.
Before leaving the north wing, we enjoy the beautiful view of the Great Werder and the Nogat River from the tower. We come to the St. Anne's burial chapel, where the Grand Masters were buried.
The east terrace used to serve as a cemetery for the friars. On the south terrace the Grand Masters had their resting place and on the west terrace the friars. A spiral staircase leads from the high castle to the bed of the dry moat. The Pfaffenturm was once the oldest Dansker and later living quarters for the priests who served in the castle church. The east and west terraces were once cemeteries for the friars, and the south terrace was a resting place for the Grand Masters.
We left the castle through the Nikolaus Gate and admired once again the facade of the Grand Master's Palace made of stones and bricks. A pedestrian bridge leads over the Nogat River.
After these overwhelming impressions we sat down for the first time in the garden of the small restaurant on the north side and had a drink before we continue our journey to Gdansk.
Actually, there is no way to describe the magnificent Marienburg - you have to see it
