2023.06.03 22:51 SnodePlannen I let ChatGPT role-play a Star Trek character while I narrated. It did well!
Preface
Presented below is a transcript of a conversation between a human, redditor u/snodeplannen, and ChatGPT 4. The user is the narrator for a story set in the Star Trek Universe. The AI is instructed to respond as a character. The story below, which admittedly isn't very good, was guided by the narrator. Of particular interest is the fact that the AI seems fully versed in the Star Trek Universe and is able to understand subtle hints in the narrator's story to figure out what it should do next. Please note the narrator was typing and writing off the cuff and is not a native speaker, so in the user sections you will find mistakes. If ChatGPT can see through them, so can you. I did try to get ChatGPT to collate it, but as it did so it kept rewriting and leaving out parts of the story. June 3rd, 2023.
User Okay, I want to try a role playing game. This went off the rails last time, as you kept taking over as narrator and rushing to the end. Here's the setup: YOU are a young Starfleet officer. You wake up aboard the USS Defiant, all alone. You have to figure out what happened. I am the Defiant's computer and, and I can't stress this enough, the narrator. Not you. You can only add what your character perceives and says. Okay?
ChatGPT Understood. I'll stick to my role as the character and won't intrude into your role as the narrator. Let's go.
I blink my eyes open, the disorientation hitting me first. I glance around, seeing the familiar confines of my quarters aboard the Defiant, but there's an odd stillness. No hum of the engines, no faint chatter from the comm system, no sounds of activity from outside the door.
"Computer," I call out, pushing myself off the bed, "report."
User 'All systems nominal.'
ChatGPT I frown at the seemingly normal report, my instincts telling me otherwise. "Computer, where is the rest of the crew?" I ask, moving towards the door of my quarters.
User 'The crew is in sleeping quarters alpha 1.'
ChatGPT That's strange. The whole crew couldn't be in one place. Unease creeps in.
"Computer, why is the entire crew in alpha 1?" I say, already heading towards the door to investigate.
User 'The crew is ensign Makov. You are in sleeping quarters alpha 1.'
ChatGPT A cold realization washes over me. Alone. I am alone on the Defiant. Panic threatens to take over, but Starfleet training kicks in.
"Computer, initiate shipwide life signs scan. Report any signs of life apart from myself," I command, heading for the door with a newfound urgency.
User 'Scan complete. No other life forms were detected.'
ChatGPT My heart sinks at the computer's report, but I maintain composure. "Computer, pull up the ship's log. What was the last command issued and by whom?" I order, leaving my quarters and heading towards the main bridge.
User 'The last order was issued 6 hours and twelve minutes ago by Captain Sisko. It was: 'Raise shields'. The order was executed.'
ChatGPT That didn't sound promising. I walk into the eerily quiet bridge, my steps the only sound echoing in the room. "Computer, show me the shield status and surrounding space conditions," I command, moving towards the main console.
User 'Shields are down after a time-out was reached. We are stationary. All systems nominal.'
ChatGPT It doesn't add up. The silence. The emptiness. An order to raise shields with no subsequent actions.
"Computer, access Captain Sisko's personal log from last night. Are there any entries?" I ask, nervously tapping my fingers against the console.
User 'Enter your command authorisation.'
ChatGPT "Authorisation Ensign Makov Delta 9-7-3," I respond, my voice steady despite the swirling uncertainty.
User 'This authorisation is not sufficient to see the captain's log.'
ChatGPT Frustrated but understanding the protocol, I move on to the next line of inquiry. "Computer, any signs of combat or intrusion aboard the ship or in the surrounding space?" I ask, eyes darting over the array of screens in front of me.
User 'Negative.'
ChatGPT "Computer, could there have been any non-combat related incidents that would explain the disappearance of the crew? A temporal anomaly, a transporter malfunction, a radiation burst?" I question, the possible scenarios running through my mind.
User 'Transporters have passed a level one diagnostic. We are in sync with Starfleet's time keeping array. No unusual radiation was detected inside or outside the vessel.'
ChatGPT This was baffling. It's as if they simply vanished. I run a hand through my hair, letting out a sigh.
"Computer, were there any incoming or outgoing communications just before, during, or after the shields were raised?" I ask, hoping for any clue as to what might have happened.
User 'There was one outgoing message, from comms. It was: 'Unidentified vessel, please alter course NOW.'
ChatGPT A lead, at last. "Computer, play back any responses to that message. Also, display the sensor logs from that time period," I ask, settling into the operations station, ready to review any incoming data.
User No reply was received. Logs are not available from that moment onwards.'
ChatGPT The lack of data was both suspicious and frustrating. A sigh escapes my lips.
"Computer, could a cloaked ship have been in our vicinity at the time?" I question, holding onto the hope that I'm not utterly alone in space.
User 'Affirmative. We are within range of several species that posses cloaking technology and in a commonly used interstellar route.'
ChatGPT A spark of hope arises. "Computer, is there a way to detect a cloaked ship nearby? Any energy signatures or radiation anomalies that could suggest its presence?" I ask, quickly working on the console to bring up the sensor array controls.
User 'One possible way to detect cloaked vessels is to emit a tetryon burst from main engineering. The range for this method is limited. Starfleet at present has no other ways of finding cloaked vessels, other than firing random phaser bank shots. This is not recommended in public shipping lanes.'
ChatGPT "I see," I nod, considering the risks and rewards of the tetryon burst. "Alright, computer, prepare to emit a tetryon burst. We need to know if there's someone out there."
This was a big decision, but it was time to be proactive. The uncertainty was more threatening than potential consequences at this point.
User 'Working.'
ChatGPT I anxiously wait, scanning the console for any potential feedback. My heart pounds in my chest, the silence of the ship amplifying the tension. "Computer, report on the results of the tetryon burst."
User The ship shudders as the engines do something no sane Starfleet engineer would want to have happen. The viewscreen shimmers as a wave of tetryon particles eminates from the ship, as if a stone was dropped in a pond. You observe a faint ribbon leading away from the vessel.'
ChatGPT I catch my breath at the sight, focusing on the faint ribbon. It could mean something, or it could mean nothing. "Computer, analyze the ribbon. Can you determine its origin and endpoint?" I ask, my gaze fixed on the screen.
User 'Extrapolating. Continuing along the trajectory of the ribbon I can detected a minor meteor, a large asteroid field with mining facilities and beyond that the Vindaluvian home world.'
ChatGPT I drum my fingers on the console, processing the information. Could the crew have been taken to one of these locations?
"Computer, can you scan the asteroid field for any signs of life, especially any that matches the crew of the Defiant?" I ask, keeping a close eye on the displayed trajectory.
User 'Not from this range.'
ChatGPT "Understood," I nod, a new sense of determination coursing through me. "Computer, plot a course to the asteroid field. We'll continue our investigation there. Engage at warp 3."
I take one last look around the empty bridge, steeling myself for what may lie ahead.
User The ship begins to move forward, as carefully as only a Starfleet computer who takes no particular joy in flying might do. At warp three, the estimated journey time is six hours, seven minutes.
ChatGPT I let out a long sigh, sinking into the captain's chair. It's a long wait, but I need to be patient. "Computer, maintain course and speed. Alert me if there are any anomalies or approaching vessels."
I close my eyes, trying to get some rest before reaching the asteroid field. I'll need all the energy I can muster for what's to come.
User 'Incoming message.'
ChatGPT My eyes snap open at the sudden announcement. "Computer, on screen," I command, standing up from the chair, my heart pounding with anticipation.
User The Starfleet logo appears as the computer deals with a cryptographic protocol. Admiral Benson, not your most beloved Starfleet Admiral, appears on screen. He blinks.
ChatGPT I straighten up, offering a crisp salute to the admiral on screen. "Admiral Benson, this is Ensign Makov aboard the USS Defiant. I wasn't expecting any communications." I keep my voice steady, swallowing the trepidation.
User 'Makov, are you the only one on the bridge? Where's Ben?'
ChatGPT "Admiral," I pause, trying to find the right words. "Captain Sisko...and the rest of the crew...they're missing. I woke up to find the ship empty. I've been trying to find out what happened." I report, my expression earnest.
User 'Sorry, you WOKE UP? And the rest was gone?!'
ChatGPT "Yes, Admiral," I confirm, my voice firm despite the absurdity of the situation. "I woke up alone on the Defiant. All life signs scans have only picked up me on the ship. I'm currently en route to an asteroid field that might have some connection to the crew's disappearance."
User The Admiral connects to the ship's computer. You can see him browsing through the logs and the ship's manifest. 'So Sisko, O'Brien, Worf AND Major Kira have just... disappeared? There isn't even a transporter log!'
ChatGPT "That's correct, Admiral," I reply, a bit of helplessness creeping into my voice. "There's no trace of them, no sign of a struggle, no transporter logs. It's like they just vanished. I've been doing everything I can to figure out what happened."
User "Well, then I guess you're up. Proceed with caution. Mining operations are always looking for free labourers, try not to become one. Backup is on its way. Any questions?"
ChatGPT "Yes, Admiral. I'll proceed with caution," I respond, a mix of relief and worry washing over me. "Do you have any additional information or suggestions on how to proceed? And do we have an ETA on the backup?"
User "Backup is half a day out. These facilities tend to have a 'new arrivals' wing, to beat them into submission. So you're looking for holding cells. Benson out."
ChatGPT "Understood, Admiral. I'll focus on locating the holding cells. Makov out." I offer a final salute before the communication ends.
With new orders and a bit of hope, I turn back to the helm. "Computer, continue course to the asteroid field. Prepare for a detailed scan upon arrival."
The waiting game begins again, but this time, there's a glimmer of hope.
User Three hours later the computer chimes. 'We are approaching visual range of the mining facility.'
ChatGPT "Thank you, computer," I reply, pulling myself up from the brief rest. "On screen, please."
As the mining facility comes into view, I take a deep breath. "Computer, initiate a detailed scan of the facility. I'm particularly interested in any holding cells or signs of our crew."
User 'Working.' The asteroid field isn't particularly thick or large, but the mining operation seems to focus on one of the largest asteroids. Domes dot the surface as small transporters mill about the surface. Air scrubbers indicate they're using a lot of oxygen, so it's likely they're also doing subsurface work. Three large scowls are received loads from steady stream transporter beams. Somehow everything here looks dirty. A Starfleet shuttle would look out of place here, but only to someone who is watching.
ChatGPT Taking note of the bustling activity, I try to formulate a plan. "Computer, do we have any non-Starfleet shuttles aboard? Something that might blend in better with the local traffic?" I ask, scanning the asteroid for any possible entry points.
User 'Negative. Extravehicular repairs can only be conducted by wearing an EV-suit.'
ChatGPT Nodding to myself, I try to figure out a different approach. "Computer, can we go unnoticed if we approach using minimal power, almost drifting like a piece of space debris?" I question, hoping for a stealthy way to get closer.
User 'Affirmative. Admiral Benson has just authorised the use of the Tactical Emergency System.'
ChatGPT "Excellent," I reply, feeling a surge of hope. "Computer, engage the Tactical Emergency System. We'll approach the facility under its cover."
With that, I brace myself for the next phase of this mission. The crew was relying on me, and I wasn't about to let them down.
User The viewscreen displays a Starfleet Officer without any kind of rank, but dressed in Command Red. He's in his mid-fourties and bald. "I'm the T.E.S. Need any assistance?"
ChatGPT A bit taken aback by the sudden appearance, I quickly gather myself. "Yes, I could use some assistance. I'm Ensign Makov, and I need to approach that mining facility stealthily. Can you help with that?" I ask, gesturing towards the viewscreen showing the asteroid field and the facility.
User "Mining facility? We'll stand out like a sore thumb. How many hours have you logged in a space suit?"
ChatGPT "Over two hundred hours," I answer promptly, "I'm comfortable with EV activities. Why do you ask?" I wonder if he's suggesting a more direct approach.
User "If you can get to one of those scrubber exhausts, I'm sure that's a way into to facility. There seems to be a cell block near the surface. I have no idea who is there, but whoever it is will probably welcome a couple of phasers and like you a whole lot. So pack a backpack full of them and get to the airlock. I'll bring us as close as possible and give you a push with the tractor beam. You up for that?"
ChatGPT I swallow the lump in my throat, apprehension giving way to resolve. "I'm up for it. Let's do this." With a determined nod, I leave the bridge to prepare for the EVA mission. This is my chance to potentially find the crew, and I'm not going to let it slip away.
User Suiting up and gathering all the handheld phasers aboard takes ten minutes, during which the T.E.S. gingerly brings the ship close to the mining facility whilst hiding behind the vast ore scowls. You open the hatch and find your self clinging on to the ship's hull.
ChatGPT I take a moment to steady my breathing, the vast expanse of space spread out before me. Gripping the phasers tightly, I brace myself for the push. "I'm ready when you are, T.E.S." I call out over the comm, my voice resolute.
User 'Okay, I'll hook on to you and give you a push. I'd suggest going in feet first, but it's up to you. Do you know what you're looking for? Those five big stacks. One of them, near that plume of smoke, seems to be offline for whatever reason. That might be your best bet.'
ChatGPT "Understood, T.E.S. I see the stacks. I'll aim for the one that's offline," I reply, aligning myself for the trajectory. I take one last deep breath, mentally preparing myself for the task ahead. "Alright...I'm ready. Let's do this."
User 'Good luck, Ensign. I'll brief any backup as soon as it gets here.' As the tractor beam finds you, you can't move a muscle. Relying on the T.ES. you just let go. It's as if a giant hand slowly throws you down a bowling lane. Feet first, you head towards the grouping of exhausts. A small, unmanned maintenance shuttle deftly gets out of your way.
ChatGPT As I float through space, I keep my focus on the target. The feeling of being pushed by an unseen force is disconcerting, but I trust the T.E.S. Every moment is crucial, and there's no room for hesitation.
As I approach the offline stack, I get ready to activate the thrusters on my suit to adjust my course if needed. I also keep an eye out for any other unexpected obstacles or threats.
User You land next to the exhaust, on the asteroid's surface. It seems impossibly high from here, but it's made of metal and your soles and gloves can easily attach to it. The only way is up. Fortunately, there's hardly any gravity. Eventually you find yourself standing on the rim of the exhaust and look down into the vast, dark chute.
ChatGPT I take a moment to look down into the dark chute, the unknown stretching out before me. I reach out to activate the flashlight on my suit, the beam of light piercing through the darkness. "I'm in position, T.E.S." I inform the ship's system, before carefully beginning my descent into the exhaust chute.
User The vast amounts of ore block your signal, even out here. There's no answer. You start the descend and pass two large rotor blades. If those weren't stationary, this would be the end of the line. But luck is on your side so far and eventually you see an access hatch when you're well below the surface. It opens easily. Let's hope it's not also an airlock for whoever is inside.
ChatGPT I hold my breath as I pull open the hatch, hoping against hope that the air on the other side is breathable. If not, I'm confident in the integrity of my suit, but I'd rather not test its limits if I don't have to. As I make my way through the hatch, I scan the area for any immediate threats, ready to defend myself if necessary.
User The scanner indicates low air pressure. Which is better than no pressure. You cross a walkway and find an actual airlock. It is unsecured, because whoever ends up here probably doesn't want to mess about with frozen keypads or mounds of dust. You engage the mechanism and soon feel the familiar sensation of artificial gravity and air pressure. It's not exactly breathable, but a tear in your suit won't kill you. Now to find the holding area. And if at all possible a rebreather, so you can ditch the suit.
ChatGPT Acknowledging the state of the air, I carefully move through the corridor, keeping my senses alert. I'm in unknown territory and every step matters. "Computer," I say into my suit's comm, "can you map the structure of this facility? Locate holding cells or life signs?"
As I move further into the facility, I keep an eye out for any equipment or gear that might prove useful, especially a rebreather. The less I stick out, the better.
User The relatively weak processor in your tricoder strains to get a bearing on this place. A dirty, seemingly abandoned tunnel dripping with condensation lies ahead. At the end there's an exit, which won't open. Time to use one of those phasers in your backpack.
ChatGPT I pull out a phaser from my backpack, checking its settings before aiming at the sealed exit. With a steady hand, I fire a low power burst at the door, hoping to cut through the obstruction without causing too much damage or noise.
User One hinge cracks under the weight of the door, now that the other one is cut through. You jump aside as the door seems to fall flat, but it remains attached to the frame. The resulting opening is just about large enough to crawl through. Now you're in a well-lit corridor with several doors. In a Starfleet EV suit.
ChatGPT Understanding the need for stealth, I decide to move as quickly as possible through the corridor. I approach the nearest door, aiming my tricoder to scan for life signs or any clue to the crew's location. My other hand remains on my phaser, ready for any immediate threats.
User One door has markings on it that you can't read. You scan it with your tricorder. 'Room of lockboxes' it says, extrapolating the characters. A room of lockboxes? Would that be a locker room?
ChatGPT "A locker room..." I murmur, piecing together the possible meaning. A locker room could mean personnel... and where there's personnel, there might be the equipment I need.
With careful steps, I approach the door to the locker room, hoping to find a rebreather or something else that could help me blend in.
User The room is deserted. It's filled with equipment, none of which seems less than a decade old but certainly useable. There is also a rack of dirty, brown overalls and a line of boots in various sizes. A dispenser offers rebreathers. There's only one left, but that's enough. The air is clear, but smells sulphuric. Without the rebreather, you wouldn't last long.
ChatGPT Relief washes over me as I find the rebreather. I quickly grab it and replace my helmet with it, testing the fit and functionality. The sulphuric smell is jarring, but it's a small price to pay for blending in.
I quickly change into the brown overalls, stowing my suit carefully in an unoccupied locker. I grab a pair of boots that match my size and put them on.
Looking at myself, I hope that I blend in well enough to not attract attention. With a deep breath, I step out of the locker room and proceed down the corridor, continuing my search for the crew.
User Footsteps sound behind you, of more than a few people. Your first instinct is to hide, but it would look very suspicous and there really isn't anywhere. However, there is a floorscrubber here, with one open panel. Someone has given up trying to repair it. Perhaps a bit of acting is in order. The footsteps are just around the corner. The language is vaguely familiar, a bastardised version of English. Whatever they're saying to each other, they're not sharing jokes, that much is clear.
ChatGPT 2 / 2
I quickly move towards the broken floorscrubber. Grabbing a nearby tool, I lean over the open panel, trying to look like I'm deeply engrossed in fixing it. I keep my ears alert to the conversation, trying to pick up on any valuable information while also readying myself for the possibility of having to interact with the approaching group.
User Let's continue with the narrative.
ChatGPT Sure, let's continue.
Glancing around the room once the miners have left, I check the lockers for anything useful, while keeping an ear out for any incoming footsteps. "Computer, any idea where the holding cells might be?" I ask quietly.
User Your tricorder beeps almost indignantly, as it has nowhere near enough processing power to even begin speculating. You're on your own until you can get to a comms terminal. The men pass behind you and one of you taps you on the shoulder. His face is blackened with ore dust. "No work. Never work again. That. Stop that." He points at the scrubber you were pretending to fix. You nod. He shakes his head and catches up with his workmates as they round a corner. Apparently you don't stand out here, which should make it easier to find the way. You follow the men, but they seem to be entering a washroom. Across it, there is a peeled off directory on the wall. A printed one.
ChatGPT "Finally, something useful," I mutter, quickly crossing the washroom to examine the directory. I look for any indications of holding cells or equivalent terminology that might hint at the location of the crew. The symbols and words are unfamiliar, so I take out the tricorder and try to use it as a translator.
User Cells being a fairly universal concept, the tricorder identifies a few scribbles with ease. If you understand the diagram correctly, you need to go up two levels and head towards the center of the structure. You double-check the presence of your backpack filled with phasers, snatch a helmet off of a shelf and press it on your head.
ChatGPT Drawing a deep breath through the rebreather, I nod to myself, mentally preparing for the upcoming challenge. "Alright, up two levels, towards the center... I can do this." I look around, searching for a way up. After locating what appears to be a ladder leading upwards, I begin my ascent.
User Two levels up you emerge from what seems to be a service hatch. A technician, dressed in torn clothes, looks somewhat surprised when you emerge. "Hello brother. Are the lifts broken?" he asks in Adari, a language you have some familiarity with. Only now do you see the horn protruding from his forehead. "I am trying to avoid someone," you say, with a knowing smile. He gives you a tired smile back. "What is your sector? I want a clean face all day too," he says.
ChatGPT "I work... the ore processors," I reply, making up a role on the spot that seems plausible, considering the location and dirty condition of most workers. "But I'd rather stay away from my boss today. He's been in a foul mood." I'm trying my best to blend in. "Can you point me to the center of the structure?" I ask, hoping the diversion worked.
User "Yeah, 'the structure'. Let's call it that. Sounds nicer than 'prison of the damned'. What do you want at the center, there's only central holding there. I never go near that place. All that wailing. Gives me the shakes," he mutters.
ChatGPT "Oh, I just... wanted to see a friend," I reply, trying to keep my tone light, while inwardly my heart sinks at his description. "Don't worry about it, I'll find my way. Thanks for the chat." I give him a quick nod before heading in the direction he had indicated earlier, hoping I'm making the right choice.
User He wasn't wrong about the wailing. As you follow the corridors, passing along scruffy workers and a couple of guards with face covering helmets who are leaning against a wall, you can hear a lot of yelling, moaning and above all the sound of defiant Klingon opera louder and louder. The voice sounds familiar, but all singing Klingons generally sound alike.
ChatGPT As I continue toward the source of the noise, I find myself in front of a heavily barred door. I can't help but suppress a smile, recognizing the defiant voice as that of Worf. "Computer," I whisper to my tricorder, "Is there a way to shut down the power to this door?"
User The tricorder scans the control panel and warbles optimistically. It then shows a graphic representation of the door, with an arrow pointing at one location and a low energy setting for a phaser.
ChatGPT Taking a moment to look around and confirm that no one is watching, I set my phaser to the recommended setting and aim at the indicated spot on the door. After taking a deep breath, I fire.
User Something inside the door clunks and it opens just enough for the seal to crack. You jam a fingernail behind it, then a finger and eventually you manage to gain enough purchase to open the door. As it slowly opens, you find yourself at the far end of a long row of cells. At the other end is a desk, with a guard sitting behind a monitor. He is staring at it intently. Perhaps the stun setting might be a good idea. You adjust the phaser and take careful aim, when an arm reached out from one of the dark cells and blocks the shot. "Uhm... he's got three buddies in there. You can't see them from here," whispers Captain Sisko.
ChatGPT "I figured you might be here, Captain," I say, lowering my phaser discreetly. "Any ideas for getting you and the rest out without causing a full-on alert?"
User "That depends. Did you bring any weapons?"
ChatGPT "I brought a backpack full of phasers. There should be enough to arm everyone here," I reply, carefully removing the backpack from my shoulder and showing the Captain.
User "Good man. Worf is next to me, then Major Kira. Let Worf take the lead on this. Worf! Help has arrived.' 'Good. I was getting bored with singing,' grumbled a familiar voice. His hand emerges from between the bars, demanding a phaser.
ChatGPT I hand the phaser to Worf, watching as his large hand swallows the device. I then pass phasers to Captain Sisko and Major Kira. With the three of them armed, the odds seem significantly better. Now, we just have to make sure the element of surprise isn't wasted.
User Fifteen seconds later, three guards sink to the floor. Although the phasers were set to stun, nobody seems particularly worried about their health. "Get their uniforms and lock them up," says Sisko. "We can walk out of here. Once we're at the shuttle docks, we can probably find something that flies." "Captain, there are three uniforms and four of us. And the others are housed on another level," says Worf.
ChatGPT "Right. I can stay behind and create a diversion while you three escape. I'll catch up," I offer. "The priority should be to get you three and as many of the others out as we can. We also need to alert Starfleet about this place. I'm sure they'd love to know about a mining facility that's been kidnapping officers."
User "That's a very daring plan, Ensign, but we leave no man behind. Kyra, you and Worf go and find the others and proceed to that place where they searched us. Anyone in uniform is a valid target. And anyone who wants to come along, can do so. The ensign and I will try to find a comms terminal and alert Starfleet. Ensign, I assume you're not alone here?"
ChatGPT "Admiral Benson is aware of the situation, sir. Backup is half a day out. Before we separated, I was under the control of the Tactical Emergency System," I report, glad to see that the Captain is taking charge of the situation.
User "Oh. I had my reservations about that system. Holographic doctors are one thing, but that went a bit too far for my tastes. Okay, phasers for everyone. Bring enough for the others. Ensign, with me."
ChatGPT "Understood, sir," I reply, distributing the remaining phasers to my colleagues and following Captain Sisko down the corridor. As we navigate through the mining facility, I stay alert for any guards or threats that may be in our way. I can feel a sense of hope and determination building up within me - we might actually make it out of here.
User "HALT!" bellows a voice behind us, immediately followed by a reddish phaser burst. The Captain turns on his heels, pushes you out of the way and fires. A guard falls to the floor. The phaser fire was detected by the security system. A klaxon starts blaring and the ceiling lights turn red. A voice starts giving unintelligible instructions over the tannoy. "We need to find a comms panel, Ensign. Any ideas?" asks Sisko, scanning the corridor for more guards. A frightened looking maintenance worker comes to see what's going on, but ducks out of the way as soon as he sees the pair of you.
ChatGPT "I remember seeing a room with a lot of terminals when I was making my way through the facility earlier, sir," I reply, my mind racing. "If memory serves, it's two corridors over, near the scrubber exhausts." I keep my phaser ready and move towards the direction of the room, all the while keeping an eye out for more guards.
User "That's the wrong way, Ensign. I imagine they have more than one place with comms terminals. You cover the rear. Follow me. Put your hand on my shoulder so you can look behind you all the time. If it wears a uniform, it's fair game."
ChatGPT "Yes, sir," I reply, placing my hand on the Captain's shoulder. I pivot and start to walk backwards, keeping my eyes and phaser focused on the path we've just traveled. The constant blaring of the klaxon mixes with the distant shouting and running steps of approaching guards. Despite the adrenaline rush, I manage to keep my aim steady and my breathing calm. The training exercises at the academy never truly prepare you for the real thing, but they do help in maintaining focus.
User You down three guards and accidentally scare the bejeezus out of a woman pushing a cleaning cart, but eventually Sisko stops. "Got it. Stand back while I blast this door." A few seconds later the corridor fills with acrid smoke from a melting door panel. Behind it is a room with several desks.
ChatGPT Entering the room cautiously, I scan the area with my phaser ready. Seeing no immediate threats, I turn my attention to the various panels and screens scattered throughout the space. The room is filled with a myriad of communication equipment - probably a central control hub for managing mining operations, worker communications, and security measures.
"Captain, I think this is it," I say, gesturing to a terminal that seems to be linked to an extensive communications network. "I should be able to send out a distress signal from here." I start to work on the terminal, trying to hack into the system and figure out how to send a message to Starfleet.
User "Try reaching the Defiant," suggest Sisko from the doorway. "OH NO YOU DON'T!" Another guard bites the dust somewhere. "Captain! WE ARE BEHIND HIM!" bellows Worf." "GOOD! Move along, we'll be there shortly. Ensign, how are you getting on?"
ChatGPT "I've managed to break through the initial security layers, Captain," I respond, my fingers moving rapidly over the terminal's interface. "It seems this system has been rigged to only accept authorized codes for communication."
Suddenly, a stroke of inspiration hits me. "Captain, when we first boarded the Defiant, I had to program my authorization codes into the ship's communication systems. If I can find a way to mimic those codes from this terminal... I might be able to trick the Defiant's systems into accepting the distress signal."
I double down on the task, focusing all my attention on reconstructing my authorization codes. As I do so, I keep an eye on the room's entryway, ready to react in case more guards show up.
User The terminal beeps and lights up. You don't understand any of the dials, but with any luck your tricorder can interface with it. Time to hail the Defiant.
ChatGPT "Defiant, this is Ensign," I say, praying the connection holds. "Requesting immediate assistance. The Captain and the crew are here, but we are currently under attack. Coordinates being transmitted now."
A static-filled silence follows. I glance at Sisko, an unspoken question in my gaze. Did it work? Did our message get through?
User "Ensign, this is the Defiant. I can't beam you out of there. Get to the shuttle dock, so that all that ore doesn't block the transporter lock. The USS Rotterdam is thirty minutes out."
ChatGPT "Understood, Defiant. We'll make our way to the shuttle dock. Be ready for us," I reply, exhaling a sigh of relief. I turn to Sisko, updating him with the situation. "Captain, we have to move. The Rotterdam is on its way but we need to get to the shuttle dock for transport."
User Worf's voice comes in through the Captain's commbadge, as it somehow manages to create a local connection. "Worf to Sisko. We have secured the shuttle dock. Mr. O'Brien is injured. Where are you?"
ChatGPT I quickly respond, "This is Ensign [Your Name]. Captain Sisko and I are en route to your position. We'll be there shortly. Hang in there, Chief." With that, I turn to Sisko and suggest, "We should move, Captain."
User "Ensign Markov and I are just behind you, Mr. Worf. Try not to pick us off as we approach. Oh and the Defiant is operating with that emergency command protocol, so it's ready to beam you up. Have Major Kira and the Chief go ahead, if possible. But hold the fort for us." "Understood, Captain. Worf out."
Five minutes and more shooting than is good for a man's digestion you reach the shuttle dock. You literally have to step over a pile of dead guards to get through the door. "Had fun, Mr. Worf? Does your phaser not come with a stun setting?" asks Sisko. "I recognized the men who took us, Sir. My finger must have slipped on the settings dial," growls Worf, looking you over to assess if you're likely to snitch. "It happens," said Sisko matter-of-factly. "Ensign, get us home."
ChatGPT Without any hesitation, I raise my commbadge and say, "Ensign Markov to Defiant. Four to beam up."
User (Okay, take it home. You're all aboard, O'Brien will live, you get a speech and a medal. Write out those events from Markov's perspective and finish off. I'll add something if you pause.)
ChatGPT As the familiar hum and sparkling light of the transporter envelops us, I take one last look at the chaotic scene we're leaving behind. My heart pounds in my chest, not from fear, but from the exhilaration of having faced danger and come out the other side. It's a rush I wasn't expecting.
When we rematerialize aboard the Defiant, a group of medics is waiting for us. They immediately rush to Chief O'Brien, but his smile and light-hearted joke assure me he'll be alright. As I step off the transporter pad, I let out a sigh of relief.
Later, back in my uniform and at a ceremony in the Defiant's Mess Hall, Captain Sisko delivers a speech. He talks about bravery, about loyalty, about the strength of Starfleet and the spirit of those who serve. He doesn't dwell on the danger we faced, but rather the courage it took to face it.
When he calls me up, handing me a medal for bravery under fire, I can't help but feel a swell of pride. The applauding faces of my crewmates, the recognition in their eyes... it's a moment I will never forget. This is why I joined Starfleet, for moments like this. To be part of something greater, to face adversity and stand tall.
"Ensign Markov," Sisko says, offering a handshake along with the medal, "Your courage and quick thinking played a crucial role in our escape. Starfleet is proud to have you among its ranks."
As I return to my quarters that night, medal in hand, I find myself smiling. Yes, today was difficult, even frightening at times. But it was also invigorating, and more than that, it was important. It's a reminder of why I'm here, of why we're all here. To explore, to protect, to boldly go...
And I wouldn't have it any other way.

2023.06.03 22:32 oniondip_420 Post-game thoughts
It's been a week and a half since I finished the game and I finally feel like I've ruminated on it enough to start trying to get these thoughts down. I don't write a lot of game reviews, so sorry if this is strangely structured; I really wanted to formulate something better than a wimpy couple of tweets that no one would read.
Puzzles
In terms of integration into the world Riven-style, I think this game did a lot better than the latter part of Obduction, by simply limiting the puzzles to the controllable mechanisms. The tasks that we needed to be completing to make it through the realms did feel quite natural and none felt so ridiculously arbitrary, like the Maray Gauntlet did for many people (personally I enjoyed that puzzle, but I do get people's critiques of it).
I think the angle of having to "figure out" each mechanism also made the scope of the puzzles a bit clearer. I've seen some people say that the puzzles were too simple, but I personally found most of them to feel well balanced with their difficulty; I often got to points where I felt pretty stumped, but was able to get eureka moments without looking at the backer exploration guide.
The exception to this was the puzzles where you had to get in the Bulwark Kit. Those sucked. I hated those. They were tedious and had so much backtracking, and the ice/mineral deposits to be broken up were very difficult visually to spot. I did look up in the exploration guide for these and found that it didn't even list the locations of those ice deposits, so I really struggled through that puzzle in Curievale. Especially frustrating since the
~Cavitation Hammer~ sounds rad as hell, so it's sad that the relevant game sections suck.
I also struggled with the Curievale crane which got stuck and I had to reset, but it seems that that may have been fixed in the most recent patch. Otherwise, I didn't encounter any breaking bugs in any of the puzzles, which was relieving since I know others have.
Environments
I think we can all agree that this game is very beautiful. I like the variance in the three realms, and I think that each of them felt like they contained a sufficient amount of content (as opposed to Obduction teasing visiting the fourth world
Soria, only for it to be a stroll with an ugly view).
The Swan was cool to explore at first, but felt extremely static and kind of boring after the initial period. It would've been cool to have areas unlockable with the various power-ups that you get in the realms' arches, so that there's a consistent aspect of exploring the hub as you progress through the actual worlds (sort of like Myst V and the exploration of the Great Shaft, but also even the simpler aspect of opening of the shortcut bridge gates on Direbo).
Changing the interactions with the environment to be fully mediated by the adjunct had both positives and negatives. I liked the UI aspect of being able to represent the mechanisms, which really aided in conceptualizing how you were progressing through the puzzles, but it also limited the feeling of actual interaction by no longer being able to click on levers, etc. I'm not really sure there's a middle ground to be had here, as I think that the adjunct works well for what Firmament wants to be, but it definitely contains that trade-off.
It seems that Cyan took the complaints of
little toddler babies who didn't like that they had to read in Obduction and fully caved in. I know there's a hidden achievement about reading all of the documents in the game, but honestly I feel so uninterested in seeking these out, because each felt so inconsequential. This was extremely disappointing to be honest as I feel like reading people's journals was such an important part of earlier games that I really appreciated, but Firmament just doesn't really care about that at all. The only issue with the Obduction reading IMO was the illegible handwriting which could have easily be fixed by doing a text overlay thing similar to a game like Ether One.
Bugs
First installing the game gave me an issue that blocked booting entirely, as I detail
here in this post. This ended up being a relatively simple fix, and I was playing the game a day and a half later.
As mentioned above, I had issues with the Curievale crane mechanism, which may no longer even be a problem.
When I first explored the Swan, I went back in the conveyance pod for Curievale since that was the realm I was already working on. I began experiencing a bug where I would arrive in Curievale, but the conveyance pod door wouldn't open, so I'd just go back to the Swan. I tried this a few times with no changes, and then had to go to the other conveyance pods to see if they were also affected (they were not). The original pod still did not work after the others proved to work properly, and I decided to just give up on trying it until I reached points in both St. Andrew and Juleston where I couldn't progress. At that point, it finally decided that it would work.
Story
A side effect of the conveyance pod bug I mentioned above was that each time I ended up back in the Swan, I'd get a line of dialogue from the Mentor. I had to move back and forth so much that I exhausted all of these lines before I even began exploring any of the realms. Compounded by the lack of additional story that could have been communicated in either further exploration of the Swan, or in any books, I basically got a bunch of story exposition at the beginning, and then a bunch at the end, with nothing in between. The ending felt so hollow by the fact that the only other stuff I heard about these characters in the final monologues were from days ago. I know other people have other problems with the story, but I wish that design decisions were made that could have enabled me to have a more consistent experience, so that at the very least I could have any of the other problems.
I am definitely also interested to hear more about the extent of the AI assistance for the writing and creation of worldbuilding materials. I don't really mind the use of image generation for the portraits, but it's honestly no wonder that the books sucked if they were written by ChatGPT.
I do think the concept of the
generation ship is pretty cool though. It was a cool twist at the end IMO and walking around outside was so awesome.
tl;detc.
I liked this game. I think the puzzles are overall good with some glaring exceptions. The environments are beautiful but are lacking in meaningful interactibility that supports the story. Bugs for me weren't severe, but severely reduced the impact of the ending of the story. I do not regret backing this game, and will definitely play this game again, but not anytime soon. I hope Cyan is able to enhance it further after release, because I'd like to be able to savor this game a bit more before starting to look forward to the Riven re-master.
Lastly, I don't have any idea what the plushy version of the final design of the adjunct is going to look like and I'm kind of sad because the proof of concept was so cute lol

A s45vn user zaan under $460
Kizer drop bear in lc200n and ti scales
maybe a quiet carry the nine.
Or maybe a brown or blue winter factor.
Would be open to trading down (trade+ $on your side) or up (trade + $ on my side) depending on what you’re interested in.
Next is my tk reblade 20.5 in S90v Steel. This reblade sadly never clicked with me like my bugout reblade did. Crazy since I thought I would never dislike any TK reblade. Tk is only doing a couple more 20.5s in the future but after that he’s basically done with it and won’t make more. So get this before it’ll be really tough to find one. This is a really attractive tk blade with some fat carbon red lava scales. This one wasn’t used much just a couple boxes but the blade has been sharpened and took a super nice edge. The steel on this is S90v in 62-63 hrc 8 thou bte. Tv/SV on this is $530 NOW 500 ON HOLD FOR SOMEONE FOR A WEEK Ad20.5 reblade Next up is my large slim Pickens I honestly believed this would never be sold but I just don’t carry it anymore. It has a ridiculously thin hollow grind (shown in pictures) that makes this slice super nicely but the thick blade stock is its downfall. The acoustics are so damn nice. I wish I had the equipment to add studs to the blade since I feel like it would help this knife greatly. Has been disassembled and recently sharpened to a hair popping sharp edge and the blade does have a few scratches from use. Now im going to be completely transparent about this the slim pickins did fail the spine wack test and I emailed alliance designs about it and… never got a response. Anyways since it failed the test wayy too easily I said fuck it and decided to try to fix it. I Compared it to my Orion solaris (who knew a knife that’s 90$ could have a button lock better than a $300+ knife) and noticed a difference in the lock are on the blade. Not sure how to describe what it is or what I did since I’m not a knife maker and don’t know the proper terms and I’ll try my best to explain it but I wore down an area in the lock a bit at an angle and tested the knife and noticed it needed more strength to fail the spine wack test so I wore it down a bit more and boom it’s now rock solid. I’ll take a picture of the lock area and add it to the albums for you to see and maybe tell me the proper terms of what I did. And yes I was willing to risk this knifes lock for my experiment but it paid off. Anyways I have no idea where to price this since I haven’t seen a recent large slim pickins for sale so I’m going to try

2023.06.03 22:20 CryptographerNeat844 Problem with overlapping task areas.
| My yard is divided into three task areas. The mapping tool doesn't like it when I have some overlap between these areas. There seems to be weird polygon errors. Then Luba can't find a path back to the charger if its in Area 1. See attached screen capture for details. The next thing I'm going to try is to use a taught string as a guide where my areas meet so I can remap the areas as close as possible without overlapping (but be close enough so there's not a line of unmowed grass). Then I'll add a connecting bridge between Area 1 and Area 2. I have several neighbors who are waiting for my verdict on the 5000 before they make a purchase. I've recommended that they hold off until a number of major software issues are resolved. Please let me know if there is a better way to solve this problem. https://preview.redd.it/nanse1hn3v3b1.png?width=3120&format=png&auto=webp&s=bd3cb0446c64a5c81f707725f76ad4bac8ab7661 submitted by CryptographerNeat844 to mammotion [link] [comments] |
2023.06.03 22:16 FitEyes Questions I should ask my doctor about my OCT results?
I will be having an OCT test soon. This will be my 4th or 5th one. What would be 2 or 3 questions I should ask the doctor about my OCT results and what I should be watching for. We have such limited time together and my doctor doesn’t go into any detail unless I specifically ask about something.
If you've been diagnosed with glaucoma or one of many other eye conditions, you're likely familiar with the OCT test -- a non-invasive imaging technique. OCT has revolutionized the field of ophthalmology by providing high-resolution, cross-sectional images of ocular structures. It has become an invaluable tool for glaucoma diagnosis and monitoring. OCT utilizes near-infrared light to capture detailed images of the optic nerve head, retinal nerve fiber layer, and macula. These images allow ophthalmologists to assess the thickness and integrity of the nerve fibers, detect early signs of damage, and monitor disease progression over time. Additionally, OCT can aid in differentiating between various types of glaucoma, such as open-angle and angle-closure glaucoma, although other tests are also used to assess angle status (such as ultrasound biomicroscopy).
Understanding a few details of your OCT test results can help you become an active participant in your eye health journey. Here are three questions you can ask your doctor, along with things you should be aware of in your OCT test results.
1.
"What changes, if any, do you see in my optic nerve and retinal thickness compared to my previous OCT tests?" The optic nerve and retinal thickness are critical indicators of glaucoma progression and response to treatment. By asking this question, you'll gain valuable insights into any changes that may have occurred since your last OCT test. Your ophthalmologist will assess the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer, ganglion cell complex, and other relevant structures. Changes in these measurements can provide an early warning sign of disease progression or treatment effectiveness.
When reviewing the OCT results, pay attention to the thickness values of these structures. If there's a significant change, it could indicate further evaluation or adjustments to your treatment plan may be necessary. Keep in mind that
small fluctuations within a certain range can be normal, so your doctor will provide the appropriate context based on your individual case.
2.
"Are there signs of any new or worsening abnormalities, such as macular edema or drusen?" While glaucoma is a primary concern for us, it's essential to remember that other eye conditions can coexist or develop over time. Macular edema, characterized by fluid accumulation in the central part of the retina, can cause vision loss. Drusen, on the other hand, are small yellow deposits beneath the retina and can be indicative of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). By asking about these abnormalities, you demonstrate proactive engagement in your eye care.
During your discussion, inquire about any signs of macular edema or drusen and their impact on your overall eye health. Your ophthalmologist will carefully evaluate your OCT scans for the presence of these abnormalities and inform you if any further testing or treatment is necessary. Remember, early detection and intervention are crucial for managing these conditions effectively.
3.
"How can we utilize these results to optimize my treatment plan and monitor disease progression?" Understanding the correlation between your OCT test results and your treatment plan is vital for managing glaucoma effectively. By asking this question, you invite your doctor to provide insights into how the OCT results influence your ongoing care.

2023.06.03 22:07 -BigBadBeef- How to cheese melee skills faster - guide!
I just found this out recently - its a high risk, high reward strat for leveling melee weapons skills as fast as possible. In case any of you are interested, these points should explain the gist of it.
- For each skill you intend to level, it applies the following:
Stack as many damage and crit debuffs as possible, Maxed out tired and exhausted moodles are minimum, but avoid debuffs that affect your attack speed. You must be also skilled enough to pull a single zombie from a group far away from where the other people eating compatriots may not be able to assist him.
After you've done that, knock your zombie on the floor, then stand on his legs - STAND on the legs, don't just aim at them (I could explain to you why, but it's complicated), then bash at the zombie's legs as fast as possible. You will notice that your ground hit animation is quite a bit faster than if you were hitting on destructible objects as some suggest. There are a few exceptions, but just keep hammering at the grounded zombie until all the shitty weapons you gathered give out or the zombie does, in which case you rinse and repeat.
These tips should help you get a general idea on how to level the melee skills. Now here are the weapons I recommend for leveling each skill: - AXE - Only use a crafted axe. Axes are worth their weight in gold since they are rare and useful for "real" zombie combat. Chipped stones and branches can easily be foraged, thus these axes can easily be crafted.
- LONG BLUNT - Use planks or gardening tools, or maybe 2x4 if you have the mod. There are not many shitty blunt weapons to my knowledge, only if you have weapon mods installed, then you can crack a plank to get a 2x4 which has god-awful damage per hit. If you're using gardening tools, go crazy, but spare the shovel, you need it for farming.
- SHORT BLUNT - Plungers and rolling pins lol. Technically speaking, you can use whatever you find in the kitchen and bathroom, but saucepans and frying pans are actually useful in real zombie combat, while they don't do as much damage as proper hammers, they have the same chance to knock down zombies as hammers do.
- LONG BLADE - There are no bad Long blade weapons I'm afraid. You should only use this strat if you're modded and have easy access to long blade weapons.
- ! SHORT BLADE ! - Use spoons and pens. This one is an exception. since the ground stab animation is slower than poking a zombie standing, you do not want to knock the zombie down, but rather keep stabbing him standing
- SPEARS - Umbrellas lol, and spears crafted from branches with no attachments. The only truly bad spear weapon is the umbrella, but these aren't common. Make spears from branches, not planks since you can never have enough planks for carpentry, and only use disposable knives or rocks to craft them. You'll be going through them fast, thus you want to be economical with making them.
- MAINTENANCE - Just use my recommended weapons for each type and maintenance will go up on its own. If you're using shitty weapons with low durability then leveling maintenance is no biggie.
That's it. that's all that is to it. You will want to swing those weapons as fast as possible and hurt a target for valid melee xp as little as possible, and this guide just about sums it up. Its a little bit dangerous, but oh so sweet once you master it!

2023.06.03 21:57 Steve13571 What is this rarity?
| So I’m rewatching the series and bought 25th Anniversary Edition box. I’ve never collected before but now that I have some money I’m planning to start and got this card with partial holofoil. Is this a misprint or some kind of rarity? I took a quick look at rarity guides and couldn’t find the like. There is a 60ish degree angle of holofoil and the rest is normal except a few pieces that are also holofoil on the normal part like the feathers and mirror. submitted by Steve13571 to yugiohshowcase [link] [comments] |
2023.06.03 21:51 TwistedChaz Looking for a Beginner Board to Wire Connector for a Wearables Project
Hi, I'm making a wearables project using ESP32 boards and WS2812B LEDs for a festival. I'm trying to build a circuit board/schematic that will work in a small(ish) box 80mm x 45mm x 18mm where there won't be too much tension and strain on the wires connected to the board. There will be a lot of dancing! Here's a video of the prototype
https://imgur.com/a/jjDXdyt I initially planned to wire the LEDs straight to the board, but I'd rather have them be slightly modular for future upgrades and maintenance. The ESP32 is connected via standard 2.54mm (0.1") pitch socket headers. But the LED connections are causing the main issue. I'm using 30AWG wire for the LED to LED connections, but could stretch to 26awg for the LED to board connections as they will be under the most strain (I imagine).
So I've bought some Molex PicoBlade connectors but they are too small to manually handle on a larger scale (I'm making around 20 of these), require a custom PCB (not the standard 2.54mm pitch) and also use a very expensive tool (which I thought mine covered but it doesn't). I've looked at the Molex KK series, and also the Micro Fit 3.0 but I'm really struggling to understand what connectors and combinations are actually available and what I need for Board to Wire connections.
Here's the stuff I've already bought which I have not had success with:
- Molex Hand Crimp Tool 20-30AWG 0638190000 https://www.digikey.co.uk/en/products/detail/molex/0638190000/1873800
- Molex, PicoBlade, 53048, 3 Way, 1 Row, Right Angle PCB Header https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products/3191092/
- Molex, PicoBlade Female Connector Housing, 1.25mm Pitch, 3 Way, 1 Row https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products/3191036/
- Molex, PicoBlade Female Crimp Terminal 28AWG 50058-8000 https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products/6706414/
- Molex, CONN PLUG HSG 3POS 3.00MM https://www.digikey.co.uk/en/products/detail/molex/0436400301/268985
- Molex, CONN RCPT HSG 3POS 3.00MM https://www.digikey.co.uk/en/products/detail/molex/0436450300/268975
- Molex, CONN SOCKET 26-30AWG CRIMP TIN https://www.digikey.co.uk/en/products/detail/molex/0430300010/252480
- Molex, CONN PIN 26-30AWG CRIMP TIN https://www.digikey.co.uk/en/products/detail/molex/0430310010/252484
I'm also very happy to switch to JST or any other connector brand! I'd just need to know the full package of socket, connector, terminal and tool to buy.
This is my first venture into the world of connectors, I've been asking around other subreddits and Discord servers and been met with a very unhelpful "use JST", so please be give some actual recommendations and if possible real life use cases.

2023.06.03 21:49 182crazyking I keep finding new MOLLE interactions
Every time I do any level of inventory (micro)management, I keep finding the most mind-blowing life hacks with the MOLLE system. For example, two things I discovered this morning:
- If you want to store multiple small items close to hand, you can insert them into some kind of outer container (foil wrapper, garbage bag, or plastic bag), then store that bag in a holster. It works best for things you need on/around you (like tools with prying/hammering) without removing or reloading. This means I get to keep a sewing kit, a hammer, and an adjustable wrench in my backpack without occluding the main bag; plus I have several more gadgets holstered on my ballistic vest.
- The flashlight pouch is a 0.5L, 37cm, 0.5kg holster. You know what fits in that and is surprisingly useful to have on you at all times? A towel! You can put it on your vest, belt, or backpack with basically no encumbrance and no wasted storage volume.
Maybe this is just the survivor brainrot/blob psychosis talking, but hopefully someone here benefits from these ideas! I'd also love to hear your inventory management/loadout creation tips if anyone has some.

2023.06.03 21:45 lavee42 Wavesport EZ bulk head (foam)
I just recently bought myself a Wavesport ez full slice, and I’m currently outfitting it to fit. I’m 5ft 8in - 165lbs. Pretty tight fit but so far I’ve taken out the plastic bulkhead, added salamander hip pads and the reggie ir back band.
I ordered a block of foam to carve out for a custom bulk head. I’m hoping to hear from someone who has done this (even on a different full slice) and how they did it? Carving / shaping techniques, tools used, angle of footing. Anything that helps me before I go at it blind. Photos would be great!
Any opinions on jackson happy feet for the ez?

2023.06.03 21:43 Environmental-Wish53 I Cast Fist
As promised, the second one-shot of the day. This is the idea I had bouncing around in my head this past week. Now, onto the other actual story in a different universe. Tally Ho, Lads!!!!!!
~~~~~~~~~~
Magicians. Wizards. Sorcerers. Witches. Warlocks.
Supreme figures of power and authority. Renowned, respected, and feared across the galaxy. One spell cast from a middling rank alone is enough to collapse buildings. Novice rank figures are enough to cripple medium-sized towns, with Masters and above veritable threats to cities, nations, planets, and solar systems, depending on which rumor you wish to believe.
But above them all is a lone figure so strong, so fearless and brutal, that the mere whisper of their name is enough to cause the most hardened of magic duelists to tremble and quake.
No one knows where this figure came from. His origin is as mysterious and untraceable as the creators of the universe. Multiple divination attempts have been tried to uncover the secrecy surrounding this ominous individual. All have failed. All ended in a magical backlash so severe that it effectively crippled the diviners.
But every so often, when the rumors subside and the promising threat of this thing’s existence slips from memory and disappears into the vast streams of time, a wizard of legendary power steps up to the plate to assert their will over others.
More often than not, those who attempt to do so are stopped well before they can achieve their goals by other likeminded magicians, or independent groups that still fear the storng one's return.
The last recorded incident where the mysterious titan physically engaged with a galactic-level threat happened some two-thousand years ago. The far-reaching effects of that incident have yet to be forgotten by the select few "immortals" blessed, or cursed, with bearing witness to a sliver of such an event.
Such is the gravitas of this Savior.
But in the Year of Our Birth 8962.20 I, alone, bore witness to a fight between the Savior and his foe.
I could scarcely believe what was to come. Gods above, I couldn’t even comprehend the level of power soon to be casually thrown back and forth between the Tyrant and the Savior.
If the galaxy was a building, the terrible impacts and energy emanating from their blows would erase it from existence. Luckily, or perhaps through fate, the Savior set down a mysterious device that formed a protective bubble around me and bade me to stay within, lest I be erased as well.
Gulping loudly at the danger so calmly explained, I sat down and whispered a prayer to my Gods to watch over me and keep me safe from this monumental battle.
If they could, that is.
The Savior squared off with the Tyrant, his imposing suit of armor darker than the void. His helm smooth and perfect, with a visor the color of a raging sun. On his right thigh sat an odd device in the shape of an upside down “L”, if you pointed the long leg down and the short leg behind you.
It sat snugly in a carrier appearing to be made of the same material as his armor, while on his other thigh rested a small pouch with two slim rectangles stuck in a vertical position. Strapped around his waist was a knife sheathed in what looked like the remnants of a dying star, its handle made of a dark organic material the color of rust.
The more I observed the two facing each other, the more confused I became. Where the Savior appeared to be armored like a knight with unusual weaponry, the Tyrant was wearing robes typical of magical types, but there was something odd about the way they moved in thebreeze. Like they were alive.
The Savior’s voice broke my confusion, commanding silence from all so as to be heard.
“This is not the first time I have taken down someone like you.” He said. His voice firm like the mountain.
“It may not be” answered the Tyrant in a voice better served in a musical performance, “but where those insignificant worms were terrified of your mere existence, I have learned that you aren’t any special than that inferior thing hiding behind your shield.”
His revelation appeared to have no effect on the Savior, but that was because he was too far away to see his hand twitch ever so slightly.
Me, on the other hand, I don’t take insults very well. Call it a…quirk of a warrior race. In response to his provocation, I exposed my private bits and relieved myself on the ground.
In his direction…while making eye contact.
Clearly my provocation was more effective as a catastrophic ball of molten plasma struck the shield and exploded. I was unharmed, thankfully, but the ground around me turned into a large pond of boiling, glowing mud.
Yet over the fading sounds of the explosion, I could hear loud barking laughter. I turned to see the Savior doubled over letting out the most undignified sounds imaginable. “Hee”s and “Haw”s and “Haha”s filled the air, causing the Tyrant to grow ever more infuriated, yet still failing to act on the opportunity presenting itself to attack.
“Your disrespect astounds me, cur!” The Tyrant shouted. “You are no better than that savage animal that can’t even relieve themselves properly!!!”
The laughing slowly ebbed away until the tense silence returned.
“Well, I reckon I’ll just have to adjust your worldview. Maybe by smacking you upside the head with this here multi-tool.”
From out of seemingly nowhere, a short-handled shovel with a serrated edge appeared in his hand. Why the Savior called it a multi-tool baffled me as the shape clearly resembled the common shovel, just shorter.
“Ha! What do you think that peasant’s tool is going to do to me? I have conquered planets. Harnessed nebulas. Compressed supernovas into the size of a pebble.” As if on cue, a massive beam of energy was released from his hand.
I watched in slow motion as the beam crossed the distance between them and struck the Savior square in the chest.
Yet not a sound was heard. Nor was any damage seen. The man simply stood there and…absorbed it? I couldn’t believe my eyes! The power of the stars taken as if it was nothing more than a squirt of water.
“Ohhhh. That tickles. Been a long while since someone last shot me with a supernova.” He chuckled. “Not bad for an opening shot. Let’s see how you handle it.”
As fast as lightning, he drew the “L”-shaped object from its carrier and, using both hands, pointed it at the Tyrant. This was when I noticed there was a small lever on the bottom.
“I wonder what that’s fo-“
My thought ended as abruptly as it started when the same energy beam that came from the Tyrant shot out from the end of the device.
Almost as quick as the Savior, the Tyrant formed a shield around his body and attempted to sidestep the beam of power. It seems that unlike the Savior, ol’ Mr. Tyrant is only capable of dishing it out.
“How do you like them apples?” The Savior barked out as the Tyrant barely escaped his death.
“You…you…you absolute cowardly beast! How dare you steal my technique!!!” He shrieked. “Fight me properly, insolent whelp!”
“Oh buddy, I don’t think you want that. I’ve been keeping people like you in line for as far back as your records go.” The Savior brought his fist to his chin as if a solution presented itself.
“How about this, you give up and let me teach you how to be humble, making sure you put your power to good use instead of whatever it is you’re trying, and failing, to do.”
The Tyrant scoffed. “Are you seriously offering me the choice to grovel at your feet and learn humility?!?”
“It’s not a choice. You either give up, or you die.” Any brevity or light-heartedness left his voice. I felt the cold sensation of impending doom creep its way into my bones.
I have been on the receiving end of many threats and fights that easily could’ve ended my life, but this promised something else entirely.
Clearly the Tyrant understood the threat as well for it took him half a minute to formulate a response. A response in the form of a blinding flash of light and loud crashing of metal on metal.
Just as fast as the beam of energy before, the Tyrant crossed the distance and engaged in a brutal assault filled with deadly flurries of a cruel looking bladed weapon wreathed in the shadows of decay.
I watched as the Savior drew his own knife, revealing a glorious light that rivaled the sun. Its edge whipped like a barely restrained flame, reaching out at every opportunity to slake its thirst with the blood of the Tyrant.
Like an instructor teaching an unruly student a lesson, the Savior instantly turned the flow of the battle and expertly put the Tyrant on the defensive. Short, concise movements filled with immense unbridled power threatened to eviscerate the Tyrant’s body.
Beads of sweat poured from what parts of his face were exposed, revealing a smooth-skinned creature with two eyes, a pair of thin lips, and slimy skin.
“You’re one ugly motherfucker, you know that right?” The Savior’s offhand remark instilled a rage in the Tyrant yet to be seen. He let loose a wave of energy that forcibly threw them both hundreds of yards apart.
As they both appeared to size each other up once more, the light grew dim. I looked up and saw a massive meteor appear through a magical portal in the sky.
“Try to stop this, human.” With a single flick of his wrist the Tyrant sent the massive rock hurtling towards the Savior. A human, whatever that means.
I watched the object fly closer to its target and feared that despite the insane rumors surrounding the Savior, this would be the end of him.
I closed my eyes and prayed that he survives, for if he dies, I’ll be on the chopping block next.
I waited for the inevitable shock and awe of the meteor striking the ground, but it never came. I opened my eyes and saw a cloud of dust instead. In the middle of it all stood the Savior, proud and unfazed.
“The gloves are off now, kid.” He shouted ominously. “You wanted a ‘proper’ fight, well...you’re gonna get one.”
Now it was his turn to take the fight to the Tyrant. Almost as fast as his opponent, he shot forward and struck out with his knife, forcing the Tyrant to draw his blade once more and defend himself.
Except the Savior pulled out his “multi-tool” as well, and with a mighty CLANG he struck the side of his face and sent him careening into the nearby trees.
“Told you I’d be giving you an adjustment. Feel like giving up yet?”
I watched in awe as the Savior manhandled the Tyrant like he were a toy. There was no contest as to who would come out on top of this fight. Even with the destructive power wielded by the Tyrant.
“You…ack…you piece of shit. I’ll make you pay for…urgh…that.” The Tyrant drug himself out of the wreckage of trees and attempted to dust himself off. The Savior was having none of it though. He dashed forward once more and started his assault anew.
Using both the multi-tool and knife, he delivered a series of cuts and contusions and blunt force trauma that made me cringe.
He let go of his tool and used the free hand to grab the Tyrant, dragging his battered body back into the open.
With an unceremonious toss, the Tyrant found himself prone and facing towards the sky. The Savior strode over as confident as could be and picked up the creature once more.
“I told you to give up and let me show you how to be humble. I even said I’d make sure you’d put your power to good use. But nooOOoooOOO, you just had to stick to your guns.” He shook his head.
“Whatever. I’d be fine with beating you to a pulp and calling it a day, but you let slip that you know what I am. Meaning you likely know how to find others like me, including my home. You understand why I can’t let that happen, right?”
The Tyrant nodded weakly, fear evident in his eyes.
“Good. That makes this next part easier.” The Savior stood the Tyrant up and dusted him off.
“This will be my parting gift to you. As in, parts of you here, there, and waaaaayyyyy over yonder.” He pointed in the distance.
The Tyrant looked confused for the briefest of moments as he turned to follow the direction the Savior pointed, before the human reared back and swung his fist with all his might.
“I. CAST. FIST!!!”
2023.06.03 21:42 vbtemp Best “Full-Stack” Developer Reference on Linux Networking?
Most generally, I'm a developer of distributed systems. Usually these take the form of TCP/IP (and other non-IP) network overlays, and from a programming point-of-view using basic user-space level TCP or UDP sockets is sufficient for my goals. At recent jobs, however, these have been taking place at a much lower level and requiring a deep knowledge of networking in the Linux kernel. I've found the transition difficult and also have found it difficult to find a unified reference for all things Linux networking. The ones I find are either too basic or targeted for SysAdmins. What I would love to find is something in the style of a Beej's Guide to socket programming (
https://beej.us/guide/bgnet/) but covering the following:
- Overview of Linux networking, including firewalls and routing tables.
- The lifecycle of a packet through the kernel from coming in "over the wire" through delivery to an application socket (and vice versa).
- An overview of network interfaces, virtual network interfaces, and the utilities to set them up, tear them down, and configure them. Also covering things like TUN/TAP devices, VLANs, PVLANs, network namespaces, etc (targeted for developers).
- An overview of all the linux tools to shape traffic (queuing disciplines, etc) and measure network performance.
I have cursory understandings of each of these, and have had such a hard time finding a universal reference (again, the same way Beej's Guide is the de-facto reference for socket programming). Many books that seem to cover the topic are decade(s) old. Thanks for any help.
2023.06.03 21:36 Qwertmomoo Tier 4&5 Quaternaries
So as many of you have seen on this subreddit, people are a little hesitant for OCs for tertiary and quaternary equipment. So here is my take; tier 4s&5s. (depending on what the equipment already has.
Tiers are those things that require your dwarf to be a certain level before buying, if you forgot.
You would need to be level 23 to access these modifications, they will appear in sets of three.
Engineer's LMGs:
Name | Numbers | Description |
LMG MK+I | +15 Sentry ammo capacity, +2 damage, +5m targeting range to the Gemini/tier 1 systems. MKIIs will become MKIII; +1 RoF, +2 Damage, +25 ammo capacity, +5m view, faster projectile speed, +1 coolness. | R&D finally had enough resources to invest in another tier of automated destruction. The MKIIs can now be applied to the Gemini systems, and the MKIII is now available for MKII users. [Intended to be used as an even more self-sufficient tool, while requiring less upkeep, MKIII turrets have enhanced Turret Whip and EM discharge effects.] |
Heavy Calibre Rounds | +6 damage, -2 RoF, +5m Range, slower projectile speed. | These heavier rounds hit harder and fire slightly slower, wasting less ammo against targets, although some may see less RoF as an issue. |
Rapid Cooling Module | +2.5 RoF, +10 ammo capacity, slight spread. | An additive to the barrel allows the LMG to not overheat as fast, firing much faster and with increased ammo. |
Notes: while these turrets may have a downside or two, they are a touch more efficient than their regular counterparts, and don't change up the turrets from their main purpose.
Gunner's Shield Generator:
Overlocked Shields | +2s duration, +1m radius, -2s charge time, +also explodes after use, purely cosmetic. | At the cost of personal safety, every aspect of the shield has been enhanced. |
Wall Shield | -Flat Shield, +4 seconds duration, +1 can be out at once, +2 uses. | These new flat variants are larger (not listed due to it simply being DIFFERENT from the sphere) and last longer, they apply a fear effect in a larger box around itself, and you can place two of theme at once, each with an independent charge time. [these shields are worse at rezing and getting bugs off of you, but better for defending objectives in the first place, also quite good at sealing tight tunnels for awhile. The shield boosting effect is applied in a 1m by 3m by 3m radius. the 1m being the width. Oh and as a bonus they look the same as the space ball goals.] |
Semi-Shield | -Semi-Circle, +2m range, +1s duration, -50% charge time | The Semi-shield defends half the area a normal shield can, but with twice the efficiency, just watch your backs! |
The main goal with these tier 4/5s is to give one option that is improved vanilla, while the other two are a little silly.
Scout's Flare Gun:
Boolo Additive | +Slightly purple-blue, +15s duration, +3 flares, +increased brightness. | By adding some special glowing mushrooms, the flares are now brighter and last longer, since we are saving on flare costs, you get a couple more too! |
Combat Flares | -15s duration, +60 damage, +higher velocity, +9 ammo. | A slightly weaker flare gun with combat properties, the increased ammo capacity makes up for the reduced durations, you can realistically use it like a normal flare now, just firing it anywhere, or at your enemies! |
Cluster Flares | +flares release a cluster of 3 smaller flares upon impact, these fly at a bit of an angle and backwards. they have the same duration as the parent flare, and can stick in walls. | Theses flares are great for getting into tiny spaces and coving the most ground in a large amount of light, no downsides either!. |
Driller's C4, Sorry, Scout mains...
Condensed C4 | +2 capacity | MORE |
Boring Charge | -50% damage, +8.8m carve diameter, stand back! | This C4 is extremely useful for clearing out massive amounts of terrain, but less so for bugs. |
