2023.06.03 22:33 webdev20 What Is Node.js

In the ever-evolving world of web development, understanding the latest tools and technologies is crucial. Among these, Node.js stands out due to its growing popularity and wide range of applications. But what exactly is Node.js? Let's demystify this powerful tool.

What Is Node.js

Node.js, simply put, is an open-source, cross-platform, JavaScript runtime environment. It allows developers to run JavaScript code on the server side, making it possible to create dynamic, server-side applications using JavaScript.
In the past, JavaScript was strictly a client-side language, meaning it was primarily used to make static HTML pages more interactive. However, with the advent of Node.js in 2009, developers could now use JavaScript to handle server-side operations as well, unifying web application development around a single programming language.

Why is Node.js Important?

Node.js has changed the face of web development in several key ways.
1. JavaScript Everywhere: Node.js allows for JavaScript to be used both on the client and server side. This "JavaScript Everywhere" paradigm allows for a smoother and more integrated development process.
2. Non-Blocking I/O: One of the core features of Node.js is its non-blocking, event-driven architecture. This means it can handle multiple requests simultaneously without waiting for tasks like database queries or network requests to complete before moving on to the next one. This makes Node.js highly efficient, especially for applications with heavy I/O operations.
3. Real-Time Applications: Because of its event-driven architecture, Node.js is excellent for real-time applications, such as chat applications, gaming servers, and collaborative tools, where updates need to be pushed to users in real-time.
4. NPM - Node Package Manager: Node.js comes with a built-in package manager, npm, which is the world's largest software registry. This allows developers to share and reuse code, which can significantly speed up development time.

Real-World Examples of Node.js

Since its inception, Node.js has been adopted by many high-profile companies for their web applications.
For instance, Netflix, the world's leading streaming service, uses Node.js to handle their user interfaces. According to Netflix, using Node.js allowed them to reduce start-up time by 70%.
Similarly, LinkedIn chose Node.js for their mobile server because it allowed them to scale much more efficiently.
Even NASA uses Node.js, but for a different purpose: to keep astronauts safe! They use Node.js to run the software that checks astronauts' physical conditions during spacewalks.

Getting Started with Node.js

Getting started with Node.js is relatively straightforward. After installing it on your system, you can start writing server-side JavaScript straight away. There are numerous online resources and tutorials for beginners, and with npm, you have access to a vast library of packages to assist with your development work.

Conclusion

Node.js has revolutionized how developers use JavaScript, allowing them to write server-side code using a language traditionally reserved for client-side scripts. Its non-blocking architecture makes it ideal for handling high-throughput applications, and with npm, the possibilities for code reuse and sharing are almost limitless.
Whether you're a seasoned developer or just getting started, Node.js is a powerful tool that can help you create efficient, real-time, and highly scalable web applications.

What men wanna go back to and blame feminists for erupting. And this is just for WHITE WOMEN, imagine how bad it was for BLACK WOMEN.
40 Basic Rights Women Did Not Have Until The 1970s
40 NO LEGAL ABORTIONS FOR ANY REASON
39 WOMEN COULDN'T GET INTO THE MILITARY AND GIRLS COULDN'T ATTEND MILITARY ACADEMY
38 COULDN'T PROTECT THEMSELVES AGAINST WORKPLACE SEXUAL HARASSMENT
37 NO PAID MATERNITY LEAVE
36 THEY COULDN'T SERVE AS ELECTED OR APPOINTED JUDGE
35 COULDN'T BE ASTRONAUTS

31 INTERRACIAL MARRIAGE WAS ILLEGAL
30 WOMEN COULDN'T SERVE ON A JURY
29 WOMEN COULDN'T SERVE ON THE SUPREME COURT
28 UNMARRIED WOMEN COULDN'T LEGALLY LIVE WITH MEN
27 WOMEN COULDN'T PURCHASE ATHLETIC SHOES
26 COULDN'T OBTAIN A DEGREE IN WOMEN'S STUDIES
25 WOMEN COULDN'T BE IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES

22 WOMEN COULDN'T DISCUSS SEX OPENLY
21 WOMEN COULDN'T ADOPT A BABY AS SINGLE WOMEN
20 WOMEN COULDN'T BE CEO OF A FORTUNE 500 COMPANY
19 COULDN'T PRACTICE LAW - women weren't accepted into university law programs. 90% of law firms refused to interview women who applied for placement in their firms.
18 WOMEN DIDN'T HAVE A VOICE - women's voices didn’t have any impact on policy or what people thought. While countless women fought for women’s suffrage and other rights, most males, especially in professional careers, wouldn’t listen to what women had to say.
17 WOMEN WEREN'T ABLE TO GET ANY JOB - before women started demanding gender equality for jobs, women could only apply for specific positions such as secretary or teacher.
16 WOMEN COULDN'T SEEK A DIVORCE ON GROUNDS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE - Before 1970s, getting divorced was difficult. Women had to prove that their husband had wronged them in order to obtain a divorce. Some reasons, such as adultery, became acceptable. Other reasons were not seen as acceptable, such as spousal abuse.
15 WOMEN COULDN'T BREASTFEED IN PUBLIC - Breastfeeding in public is a controversial topic today, however, before the 1970s, this topic was not even a controversy because it simply wasn’t allowed. Mothers were not allowed to breastfeed their children in public.
14 NO EQUAL EDUCATION - not only weren’t they allowed to obtain a law degree or go to ivy league colleges, they faced discrimination in the educational setting in many other ways. Many men thought girls just couldn’t handle higher education. Some felt girls weren’t smart enough to obtain a certain level of education. Many people felt women belonged in the kitchen more than school.
13 WOMEN COULDN'T HAVE THEIR OWN MIND - their ideas and opinions weren't considered valuable. Tasks acquired by women were what men felt they were capable of such as childcare, cleaning, cooking. Wives needed husbands’ permission to do many things, including getting a job.
12 THEY COULDN'T CARE ABOUT EDUCATION MORE THAN MARRIAGE - starting in the late 1960s women began to focus more on their higher education than getting married and starting a family right out of high school. This idea became a drastic change from a few years before when women often got married young because there wasn’t much for them in higher education.
11 NO WOMEN IN DC - before the 1970s, women did not have political positions in Washington DC.
10 THEY RALLIED AGAINST THE MISS AMERICA PAGEANT - in 1968, many US women protested the Miss America pageant complaining they wanted to be treated as people and not objects. They stated that the Miss America pageant promoted sexism.
9 WOMEN FOUGHT FOR THE RIGHT TO PROTEST - before the 1960s women rarely held marches and protests. If they did they saw hostility from males and other women. It started to change when men joined in the women’s protests for their rights and equality matters.
8 COULDN'T RECEIVE DIRECT CONSULTATION ABOUT PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH - women didn’t receive direct consultation about their health from doctors even if they were sick. A wife had to have her husband speak with the doctor on her behalf.
7 SHE COULDN'T REFUSE SEX FROM HER HUSBAND - in the 1970s state courts began to realize that there was something called marital rape. However very few states would do anything about it until the Violence Against Women Act of 1994.
6 WOMEN COULDN'T FILE FOR DIVORCES, WHEN THEY COULD IT WAS A LONG AND TEDIOUS PROCESS - Many people question the reason that the divorce rate is higher today. One of the biggest reasons is because women have the right to get divorced without needing proof of abuse or infidelity. Lawmakers came up with the No-Fault Divorce Act in 1969. This act allowed women to obtain a divorce easier as they no longer had to prove their partner’s fault.
5 *WOMEN COULDN'T CELEBRATE 'INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY' * - IWD started in the early 1900s. No one acknowledged it. That changed in 1970s when President Carter said States would celebrate IWD Day on March 8th.
4 PREGNANCY COULD CAUSE YOU TO BE FIRED FROM A JOB - Pregnancy Discrimination Act passed 1978.
3 WOMEN WOULDN'T BE ACKNOWLEDGE FOR RUNNING BOSTON MARATHON - first woman to run in the Boston Marathon was Kathrine Switzer in 1967. At the time, the Boston Marathon didn’t acknowledge women and she was attacked, spit on, and taunted.
2 WOMEN CONTINUED TO FACE WORKPLACE DISCRIMINATION - organizations started focusing on enforcing Work Equality For Women. The 1964 Civil Rights Act stated employment places could not discriminate based on gender or race, women continued to face work discrimination and inequality.
1 NO CREDIT CARDS - Legally banks could deny women credit cards until 1974 with the passing of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. Women's application's got 'denied' or told to bring their husband’s signature on form. If the woman wasn’t married, the bank would request she bring a male, such as her father or brother, to co-sign the application.

2023.06.03 21:48 Godberd Run named Python files from Tasker and Smartthings and Google Assistant using Eventghost

I'm finding Python to be a good way to do a lot of different things, from controlling lights to streaming music to my Nest speakers so I wanted a way to run any named python file on my computer triggered from Tasker or Smartthings (& therefore Google Assistant), or from anywhere you can send HTTP, so I've made a process in Eventghost. For reasons, I thought I'd try to avoid Autoremote and IFTTT. This does technically use the Autoremote plugin in Eventghost but it avoids using it's servers as that's where errors can occur, so although it needs the plugin, you don't need to register any devices and that should keep things simple and more reliable.
It's not too hard to run a named file, but it's harder to run any named file that could be called in the HTTP message so that's what this is for. I thought to get Smarthings and Tasker into the mix as then you can control things from pretty much anywhere, including Google Assistant, and using Eventghost & Tasker gives a good GUI and enables other stuff to be linked easily.
It is possible to set Smarthings to run an HTTP request, but it's easier to run Autonotification and have Tasker pick up notifications from Smartthings and convert that to the correct message format to send to Eventghost. In fact you can set it up in various ways so you can trigger events from Smartthings, or Tasker, or a browser, or wherever. If you use Smarthings, that also enables it to be able to trigger from Google Assistant with voice commands. If you did want to go direct and get Smarthings to send HTTP requests, that would be sourced from the ST hub, so still only needs a local IP. That way you can trigger actions on your phone from anywhere but leave all the security to Smarthings. Neat!
  1. First set up an HTTP GET request from Tasker in exactly this format:
http://10.0.0.50:1818/?message==:==runfile:yourfilename.py
If you get this working first, then you can link in Smartthings and Google. The IP will be the local IP for your PC and the file to run is 'yourfilename.py'. If that is sent correctly, the message should get to Eventghost, and you can pull in a trigger for a macro: "AutoRemote.Message." and add 'Action, Eventghost, Python script'. That script will parse the message and pass the filename to the bat file. Script is below.
  1. Then you'll need to set a folder c:\data\python\PCcontrol and create two files called 'log_py.txt' (for diagnostics) and 'RunAnyPythonFile.bat'. This bat file will call the Python file to run in the named folder. The script for the bat file is below.
The Python files should be in the folder path named in the bat file (currently it's the same folder). You can of course edit the paths in Python script and bat file once you have it working. I'm not sure what the setup time is for this. If you already have Eventghost installed and know how to use it, it might only take 10 mins to get a command to run.
Once it's working you can create some virtual switches in Smartthings linked to an automation that will send on and off notifications which can be picked up in Tasker. Autoremote will delete them as they arrive (you MUST do that or you'll trigger all of them every time a new one arrives!). Then you can link those with Google Assistant too. Also, in GA you can make routines to trigger HTTP requests in Smartthings and run Python media commands, but I can explain that more if anyone's interested. So with that set up you can just press a button or use a voice command or an automation to start a radio station stream or change the Nest group volumes or broadcast a message, or whatever.
This is the Python for the Eventghost script:
import subprocess
import os
import logging
import datetime
# Create a log of all requests
log_file = r"C:\Data\Python\PCcontrol\log_py.txt"
logging.basicConfig(filename=log_file, level=logging.DEBUG)
# Extract message
message = eg.event.payload
message = str(message)
# Remove the first 11 and last 1 characters from the message - trim to suit - check log
message = message[6:-1]
# Write the full message to the log e.g. runfile:myfile.py'
# It is an HTTP request GET, not an Autoremote messsage, but it's using it's format
timestamp = datetime.datetime.now().strftime("%H:%M:%S")
logging.debug(timestamp + ": " + message) # log full message
# Check if 'runfile:' is present in the message, if so run file
if 'runfile:' in message:
message = message[8:] # trim filename from message e.g. myfile.py
logging.debug(timestamp + ": " + message)
# Call the batch file with the filename from message.(Note Doesn't HAVE to be a .py)
batch_file_path = os.path.join(r'C:\Data\Python\PCcontrol\RunAnyPythonFile.bat ', message)
subprocess.call([batch_file_path], shell=True)
This is the code for batch file: RunAnyPythonFile.bat

@echo off
REM set the path location of python files to run - can be different from bat file location
set "python_file_path=C:\Data\Python\PCcontrol"
set "python_file=%~1"
set "full_path=%python_file_path%\%python_file%"
python.exe "%full_path%"

2023.06.03 21:24 mcizzzle Can I be sued for leaving a bad review? (WA State)

I recently moved out of an apartment on 3/31/23 after living there for nearly 7 years (1920s building and not well maintained) and I feel like the management company treated me like shit.
I did not expect the experience to go the way it did, so I did not think to document conditions upon move-out (big mistake). Ultimately I was charged almost $2000 ($1400 above my initial deposit) for repairs, despite the apartment not being in pristine condition when I moved in.
I intended to pay the fees since I admit there was some "soot" on the ceilings and window frames. I think the stains came from a multitude of sources, including candles, incense, and burning food while cooking (there was no ventilation in the kitchen). However, I also smoked cannabis for years (with windows open) and never felt like I had a leg to stand on to fight the charges due to this.
Despite this, I still wanted receipts/invoices from the company to prove a full repaint cost what they were claiming ($1600 for a ~500sqft unit seemed excessive to me).
I received my disposition notice after emailing them on Thursday, April 27. They claimed to have mailed my notice on 4/19, but I received someone else's disposition to my new address.
On Monday, 5/1, I reached out to ask for receipts and was told my request "was forwarded to the manager." By Friday 5/5, after still not hearing from them, I reached out again and was told "it's still on the manager's desk." The following Friday, 5/12, I reached out again and received no response at all.
Monday came (5/15) and I received a call from a debt collector. It had not even been 30 days since they had apparently mailed out my final disposition, so I was furious. Especially since I had been in contact with them and they were giving ME the runaround. It seemed weird to me that it was taking them so long to produce receipts for work that was already done and they were billing me for.
Again, I was fully intending to pay whatever fees were necessary, as long as they could prove costs.
I called the company immediately and "yelled" at them (I call it yelling, but it was only a little more stern than my normal voice - I struggle with confrontation). I was emailed the receipts later that day and they told me they removed my account from collections since I was intending to pay.
I think the whole situation was ridiculous, and I want to leave a 1-star review for their company so others can know how they do business, but I am terrified of negative consequences (accusations of slander, legal action, etc).
TLDR: Can I get into trouble for leaving a bad review? I just want to detail the scummy move-out process I went through, despite being a decent tenant and always paying my rent on time.

Thank you in advance for any advice. I know I am not completely innocent in this situation, but I also experienced many issues in this apartment building and the exterior was absolutely filthy (despite asking them to do outdoor maintenance multiple times to no avail). I feel like this is one of those companies that nickels and dimes their former tenants so they can renovate their units above the condition the unit was in when those tenants began living there. Unfortunately, I have no proof of anything, besides the email trail of the collections adventure.
All I want to do is leave a bad review to feel like I got some sense of justice in this situation.

2023.06.03 20:40 code_hunter_cc To many long running Apache processes in READ status without requests after a certain time

Apache
I am using /server-status to monitor the Apache processes. When starting they look like this:
_____W_K__K____________C_K________C_____________W_.............................................................................................................................................. But after few hours of running look like this:
R_KCR___KR__RKRR_RRRKRRRRRRKRR_RRCK____R_RRRR_RRRKRRRKRRRRRRRRR_R_RRRR_R.RR.R_R.R_R..CKRRRRW.K_RCRKRR_R_.._R._.RK_KRK_.RRR.KK_.R..RR............................................................ There is too many "Read" (R) status which took a long time and I don't know what they do, because they even have no requests. (Mention that there are additional "." statuses which I skipped from the example above, in total I have 2000 positions available.) In the process list I have approx 40 "R" processes like this one:

  1. Why there are so many "R" statuses without requests?
  2. What they do, how can I find out?
  3. Why they run so long?
Update 1:
A have modified the timeouts to 7200 (=2 hours), this is the minimum for me to can run my cronjobs. However I did not have problems with my cronjobs.
FcgidIOTimeout 7200FcgidBusyTimeout 7200 Also for Apache:
Timeout 7200 Based on PHP and mod_fcgid: ap_pass_brigade failed in handle_request_ipc function I did this:
FcgidOutputBufferSize 0 Based on mod_fcgid: ap_pass_brigade failed in handle_request function I did this:
FcgidMaxRequestsPerProcess 500 After few hours the server stopped responding:
Service Unavailable: The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintanance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
In the logs I found some erros like this two:
[fcgid:warn] (104)Connection reset by peer: mod_fcgid: ap_pass_brigade failed in handle_request_ipc function[fcgid:warn] (32)Broken pipe: mod\_fcgid: ap\_pass\_brigade failed in handle\_request\_ipc function And a bunch of like this (maybe for each requests):
[fcgid:warn] mod_fcgid: too much processes, please increase FCGID_MAX_APPLICATION Questions 2:
  1. What are these errors mean? How can I correct them?
  2. Why the server stops responding? Probably because of errors...
  3. Are the mod_fcgid, php-fpm, php5-cgi, prefork modules fully compatible and effective? This was the default configurations when I got the new server.

2023.06.03 20:34 TheDBA_CyberGuy What is Kerberos Authentication

Kerberos is a secure communication protocol that provides strong authentication within a client/server architecture. It uses ticketing concepts to enable systems communicating over an unsecured network to prove their identity to one another securely. Moreover, it provides protection for logon credentials of principals of a system.
Entities authenticate to network systems using different credentials such as username and password combination, smartcard, token and biometrics. Once entities authenticate themselves using Kerberos, they will be able to access multiple applications similar to single sign-on (SSO) principle. Furthermore, SSO reduces identification and authentication overheads by enabling users to gain access to multiple systems using a single account.
Kerberos uses symmetric encryption algorithm to prove users authenticity. Moreover, it will protect data and messages against eavesdropping and replay attacks. Besides, users should securely maintain their secret keys to prove their identities to an authentication server.

Components of Kerberos

In a Kerberos environment, users gain access to applications and systems deployed somewhere in the network through an authentication server. Moreover, as mentioned earlier it employs secure ticketing systems to authenticate and grant users access to these network resources.

Users / Principals

These are the entities that will make use of Kerberos protocol for identification and authentication purposes. The user encrypts its username and corresponding credentials and sends it to the KDC mainly to the authentication server (AS). Besides, this takes place in the form of hashed secret key for secure storage and validation reasons.
The user will request a Ticket Granting Ticket (TGT) from the authentication service (AS) through this registered and stored identity. More specifically, the user requests authentication by sending a message encrypted using the user's secret key. This is because of the symmetric encryption the Kerberos uses. If the authentication process is successful, the AS will issue a TGT to the requesting user.

Authentication Server (AS)

The authentication service (AS) is responsible to perform user authentication through an exchange of encrypted piece of data. If the user is able to decrypt the data using a shared secret key, the server will automatically authenticate the user. The authentication server is the first line of defense and authorizes users to request tickets. In other words, users will not be able to request tickets directly from the Ticket Granting Service (TGS). Moreover, when users inquire registration, the AS will authenticate each user before permanently storing their record in the KDC. Furthermore, the AS checks and issues TGT to users requesting resources based on this information.

Ticket Granting Service (TGS)

The Ticket Granting Service (TGS) securely issues tickets to authenticated users. Moreover, the tickets are time stamped and expire after a few hours perhaps after eight hours. In addition, it holds credentials for principals (Users), applications, and services. Moreover, it stores the secret and session keys for secure transactions. The user sends the TGT and requests a ticket for service from the TGS. The TGS in turn verifies and sends Ticket for Service back to the user.

Key Distribution Center (KDC)

The KDC is the heart of Kerberos established to perform registration for new entities. Moreover, KDC is the server that holds and maintains all users and services credentials and keys. Besides, it provides secure authentication to entities referred to as principals (users, applications or services). In addition, it provides security services for a set of principals in their defined domains.

Application Server / Network Services

The authentication server performs certificate-based authentication but does not provide credential tickets. However, the server may hold user credentials or work with Active Directory (AD) and LDAP databases. Ticket is shown by a subject to an object in the defined realm to request access. Moreover, the user sends the Ticket for Service and request access to resources. Finally, the server grants access and authenticates the user.

Kerberos Architecture

The Kerberos architecture has three major components. These are the Authentication Server (AS), the Ticket Granting Service (TGS) and the resources server where applications and systems reside. Hence, that is why the name the 3-headed dog authentication mechanism, referring to its Greek origin. Moreover, it is a network authentication protocol that provides strong authentication services to client-server environments.

Steps in Kerberos Authentication

Users in Kerberos environment employ three major steps in order to prove their identity, be authenticated and access resources. Moreover, they will need to have necessary privileges to create sessions and gain access to the centralized services. Let us briefly discuss about the three steps as follows:
You can find more information about Kerberos on this website of MIT.

For players joining in games that are already in progress, you will have the same options the original players did as long as you don't overwrite what has already been written into the canon. I currently DM 7 games with 24 players combined with some even opting to play in several games. We have a tight nit community of players, many of which date back years.

About My Games

Tuesday (Untitled Game) 8 PM EST 5 Player Slots Avalible This game is brand new. As a result we will go through a session zero where the players get heavy say over the setting of the game before we ever get into playing the game. The players can design as much as they want before I get started.

How I Run the Game

How Players Impact My Games.

Once a starting group is found we push forward into session 0. This is not your normal session 0. It will be the length of a normal game not just be about making characters. We will first state by asking questions about the settings so the players control the overall theme of the setting. Then we start looking at characters and after that, we talk about any rule changes we want to make for our game. The players also get to make choices about the area they come from so they are more intertwined and natural. Then I finish the setting based on this feedback. Below is a list of questions players should be prepared to answer for this session 0.What time period are we playing in?What level of magic is available in the setting? What level of science is available in the setting? What is the economy like? What is the government like?Do the other planes exist? Many other questions will be asked that may only become relevant depending on what the answers before that are. This is what makes my games special and I hope you would consider joining us.
Application Response:
  1. Name
  2. Age
  3. Timezone
  4. Experience with D&D

2023.06.03 20:09 Storms_Wrath The Human Artificial Hivemind Part 379: Insight Beyond Sight

First Previous Wiki
Huatil had heard the recommendation from her superiors, which wasn't a recommendation at all. With the information she'd been given, the situation was serious, and would tick over to catastrophic in a few tens of days or so. So here she was, having made the call to perhaps a serious threat in the future.
"We need you now," Huatil said, looking at Phoebe with her best honest expression.
"Why?"
"Our main communication networks are being hacked by something. It's intelligent, and dangerous. We've initiated quarantine procedures, but the virus is already sending its own communications through back channels, continuing to jump from world to world."
"And you want me to get rid of that problem for you."
"Alright. It will have a price. Not just materials this time. The current proposal is that I will help you if you agree to allow a cultural exchange if asked, along with full technological exchanges. The only thing you can hold back is currently classified technologies. If you violate the spirit of this deal by trying to 'classify' everything of value your species has, I will not be happy, and neither will my colleagues in the Alliance. I am aware that you have been keeping us away from the good stuff. In particular, if you want us to trust you, you will give us the solution to the mind control problem we are having."
"You are making quite the assumption," Huatil replied. Phoebe just smiled, tapping her head. "I've done a lot of thinking. First, I assume that you are in conflict with Aphid, perhaps also a certain force of mind-controlling individuals. They may or may not be Sprilnav. I know this due to my own clandestine intelligence gathering efforts."
"Hacking us, then?" Huatil resisted making a comment on such behavior being untrustworthy, considering what she'd been up to recently. She was about to wade into a shadow war with mind-controlling individuals, and Phoebe was not needed to intervene. Yes, a human force was needed, but Phoebe was too... risky. Human supersoldiers would be useful, both for assessing their capabilities and also for being less able to fool sensors and the like meant to monitor them.
"No. Not hacking. If I was hacking you, I would have everything I need already. But I am watching. Know that I engage in diplomacy because you do the same. I am willing to help you. And do not forget that you admitted to the whole Alliance that you were and are spying on us. That has a certain negative effect on the minds of certain intelligence agencies, as well as the higher-ups in the Alliance's general leadership. Your words have consequences."
"I see," Huatil replied. "Very well. I shall see what can be done."
"Having the ear of the Nest Overlord is enough?"
"In some ways."
Phoebe smiled. "So you have your own power." She tilted her head, like she was scanning Huatil. She wouldn't get anything useful, though. The connection didn't have the capability to reveal anything.
"Your childhood information has been faked. Granted, the fake is very convincing. You even took real videos of that family. But I can tell from their heartbeats and feather movements that the situation is not genuine."
"Heartbeats? In a video?" Huatil asked. How was that even... actually, it made sense. Video quality was really good, so seeing small details like that was possible.
"I am an AI. That means some of the most sophisticated simulation and modeling technology in the galaxy is at my disposal, as well as lie detection on a level undreamt of by any power that yet exists, should I see reason to activate it."
"Why not have it active at all times?"
"Power usage. Speculative simulation and reconstruction, especially when accounting for psychic energy variances, is annoyingly power intensive. However, you are worth the investigation. That said, you are not who you say you are. You have the resources to fake a past very convincingly. Therefore, you are working for a powerful faction within the Hive Union. Of course, it is not public who you are, so likely either defense or intelligence oriented. Hmm. No reaction? How interesting. Is that a cybernetic neural network engraved on your muscles and organs? Jesus, you really are the real deal. What are you?"
Huatil was at a loss for words. To be found out so convincingly, so thoroughly, and yet not suspected to be part of the Blue Intelligence Agency was a true surprise. Maybe Phoebe just didn't know about it at all yet.
"So this is why you wished to talk with me. You wanted to dig up my secrets."
"Hardly. The hivemind could do this, too. But you asked for Phoebe, not the hivemind. So here I am. That said, what are you?"
"A concerned party, let's say," Huatil replied, reassembling her facade. Her feathers first, then her face, then her heartbeat and muscles. Complete, total control. Phoebe was smirking when she opened her eyes again.
"Interesting. I will not dig into what you are, in exchange for information about the threat you are attempting to neutralize."
"Threat?"
"You are carrying a model of weapon that is not ceremonial in nature. A Model 14 Brutalizer, if I am not mistaken. That's a handheld weapon able to pierce tanks, with ammunition that is light and numerous. You are walking with enough firepower to level a tenth of a city on you. Furthermore, I can see the reflection of stealth equipment lying on the floor in front of you."
Huatil looked behind her at the black metal wall. There were no mirrors present. The only slightly reflective thing in the room was the screen, which couldn't do that when it was on and active. Phoebe's eyes didn't move, but Hautil could tell that the intelligence before her was more alive than ever. And more artificial than she had remembered.
"What?"
"Yeah, that wall is almost black. But it isn't really," Phoebe replied. "I am more than what I once was."
"This is... worrying."
"It should not be. We are allies, yes?" Phoebe asked, smiling a little too widely.
"Yes."
"Let me help you."
"I will ask Humanity to help, not you."
"I am not a threat to you or your species, nor am I one to your Union."
"I cannot trust words alone," Huatil replied.
"No. You cannot. But my androids are even more effective marksmen than whatever your cybernetic augments would let you do. Your reaction time may be low. But it is not faster than my androids' programming."
"Plotting that many angles would likely be extreme."
"Basic trigonometry and geometry, with perhaps a little lessons on elastic and inelastic collisions in physics are all that is needed for me to do that. In a whirling hurricane, in a storm with no gravity applied, with the right bullet, I could hit a target from the opposite edge."
Huatil sighed. Phoebe really wanted this job. And she was capable of it, too. Overqualified, in fact. The single weakness she had was the lack of ability to maintain quantum connections if a suppression signal was active. Plus jamming.
"Even assuming that is true, my superiors would not allow me to tell you anything."
"Sure. Assuming you have superiors, who would they be? Kawtyahtnakal is your mate. And I doubt Regulator Eyahtni would have let that happen if she was your boss. So you serve another party, one powerful enough to pull these strings. If you are not at the top, you are near it. And I would happily talk to your superiors, perhaps to congratulate them on your very well-trained 'untrained' stance." "Secrets will remain secrets, Phoebe. I have come to ask for you help with the virus. Will I have it?" "Yes, with a single amendment to our agreement."
"That was not the deal."
"It was not."
"So why should I let this alteration stand?"
"Because judging from the fact that you are well trained and haven't ended this conversation, where you have seen me gather more intelligence on who and what you are and coming increasingly close to whatever hidden truth you have locked away. You obviously judge me as a threat but do not treat me as one in the hopes of maintaining a cordial dialogue.
Furthermore, you seek to distance me from whatever foe you are fighting, likely because the human soldiers would seem more likely to allow you to assess the fighting capabilities of Humanity's strongest champions. And beyond that, the amendment remains unspecified, yet you have already been making small motions showing you accept it with the words you chose to talk with me."
Huatil kept herself from thinking anymore. Too much pondering might also reveal some new scrap of information to Phoebe. Her whole personal file was clearly wrong. This level of piercing interrogation was never expected. Had she been like this all along, or was this new? And if so, would she remain like this in the future, gradually peeling away the secrets of the Sennes Hive Union one by one?
"Again, that is quite a lot of inferences. Some of it may be wrong."
"Some is right, then. So I am either getting closer, am a threat, or you need me very desperately. The latter is true, and the only thing that matters. So you will contact your superiors, get me access to them, and we shall share information in a permanent dialogue. You will not shut down the line later. We will hammer out a more sufficient agreement, so that we can actually get things done as unified national entities, instead of hatchlings trying to make their first flight."
"Using our analogies does not make your request more agreeable, you know," Huatil warned. "It does not need to. You have already agreed."
"You wanted to alter the deal."
"I am altering it, Truth Speaker Huatil. I wish to know what you are, and who you are. And we shall have an important talk with your superiors. You need me, which is why you are asking me this at all. And I shall help you with the virus, but it will require opening the locks on your networks." "You could just break them."
"Then I would be detected, and any anti-Phoebe factions within your species would have easy fodder to attack me with."
"And you could hack the news system, as well."
"Your air-gapped networks? Not easily. Especially with the sealing procedure. I am also fighting a war with Aphid as we speak. I'm already battling him across the Alliance's networks, building digital fortresses to survive onslaughts of viruses and contaminants trying to breach the firewalls." "And what is Edu'frec doing?"
"Other things," Phoebe smirked. "Secrets will remain secrets, Truth Speaker."
"Very funny."
"I think so. Now, will we finally pull out the pinfeathers and get to business?"
"Perhaps. Lay out your terms in full," Huatil replied.
"Full information on the individual known as Huatil, contact with her current employer at the time of the signing of this agreement, a cultural exchange agreement if the Alliance agrees to such, full technological exchange if the Alliance agrees to such. The details of a technological exchange include and are not limited to civilian products without a direct copyright, manufacturing techniques, alloy compositions, types, and forging techniques, energy production, manipulation, and removal technologies, non-classified military technologies, supercomputer construction techniques, all known elements in your periodic table, not just the public ones, and multi-planetary economic markets. Full information on combating mind control. In exchange, the individual known as the AI Phoebe will excise the virus in your networks. Humanity will send its supersoldiers to aid in your current unspecified predicament for the length of one month, as defined by the human Gregorian calendar, as it is set up for the planet of Earth."
"Your condition on classified technologies will need to change, as well as that on civilian products," Huatil replied. "Retroactive classifications make sense, but the Hive Union may produce technologies in the future that require secrecy. Not to mention some of the higher classification levels, such as above 5, will not be touched. I am not saying that as some sort of point to negotiate. You just will not get anything above that. Not if you hack us, not if you beat the right people within a claw of their life.
And were we to sign away the civilian product manufacturing techniques, it would significantly anger the corporate factions in the Union. The same is true for the other manufacturing agreement. You will have to agree not to sell such materials to us and use them only for your own ends. That would include selling the products of such designs or deconstructed versions. Even then, this agreement will not be quick."
"Then speed it up."
"Cawlarians are dying because of this virus. Monorail trains have derailed. Aerial vehicles have crashed."
"Yes."
"So something must be done now, then," Huatil replied.
"I will see what I can do to slow the spread. But the deal must be passed."
"How much of this was drafted by the Alliance prior to our conversation?"
"Every provision that remains. Well, we'd be happy to get more, but the deal won't budge too much more away from this. I know it's not good proactice to reveal the cards in a negotiation. But telling you what we hope to gain will lessen the time this takes and hopefully allow us to finally establish proper ties. We already have a defensive link, but it is weak. And we have trusted you to move us closer over time, but you have not. Thus, we are acting to force that."
"So you are holding our crisis as a gun to our heads," Huatil surmised.
"No," Phoebe replied. "I will help you with your issue. But unless you wish to send your own people into whatever mission you wish for, then the agreement will need to be signed. Only then will the super soldiers deploy. We are not trying to kill your people. We are trying to get a deal which has slipped from our fingers for far too long. And you might be forgetting that it may benefit you, too. Humanity's hivemind is more intelligent than any model VI or single group of smart scientists you have."
"If it comes out that the Alliance manufactured these circumstances-"
"You presume too much. We would not do this to you. If we wanted to control your Union, the first step would be... no, I won't tell you. However, Truth Speaker, know that we do not wish for hostilities. Were we to successfully subjugate your Union, the Sprilnav would burn us both down for breaching the system limits."
"That is not a very reassuring promise."
"We do not want to die. That is pretty binding, I would think. Just like those alterations under your feathers, I'd say," Phoebe grinned. Huatil sighed.
"The agreement will be subject to changes after our diplomats get ahold of it."
"Kawtyahtnakal and Eyahtni could always enact the 24th Tenet, bypassing resistance from all underlying foes, if they are not currently being impeached."
"The 24th is an extreme circumstance. Even if Kawtyahtnakal were willing to enact it, that does not mean that your Alliance will be quick to accept any changes."
"Actually, we would. A few years ago, most of our leaders assumed you would be moving closer to us at some point. Thus, we prepared various diplomatic plans, potential proposals, and goals that we were willing to cede, those we were not, and other such things. The wanderers are not currently party to the calculus as they have no unified species leader, and Blistanna has already agreed to and pored over the plans.
In fact, that prompted an expansion and update to them."
"And is our current situation following such a plan?"
Phoebe shrugged. "You won't find any records unless you have a secret ability to teleport things too. Nothing online exists. And the Alliance has so many planets to search... and so many stations. No matter. I'm happy to tell you that we are currently straddling the path between Cawlarian Foreign Policy Plan Blue and Plan Yellow. Of course, there are other CFPPs."
Huatil took note of those for later.
"Your questions on their contents will not be answered by the few that are privy to their existence. Good luck with your attempts, Truth Speaker. Now that I have presented the path forward, are you ready to do some heavy politics and diplomacy?"
"I will present the agreement to the relevant parties, and you may do the same. Know that I also have some bargaining power, Phoebe. One day, you may be on the other side of this equation." "Well, the deal for us is sweeter. Your fastest ships would still likely take weeks to reach us, while our fastest ships are Brey's portals, with a travel time of zero seconds. Well, not quite, but you get the idea."
"Instant deployment," Huatil replied.
"A reminder of the possible future benefits of a long-term and stronger diplomatic relationship between our two peoples."
"Would you be willing to let us have Brey's aid in a coming unspecified event?"
"If the event were specified, she agreed, and the agreement was signed, then perhaps we may discuss. Until then, we shall wait. I will help curb the damage from the virus. But removing it and starting your operation with human super soldiers will require an official agreement, signed by at least Regulator Eyahtni and Nest Overlord Kawtyahtnakal."
"I hate bureaucracy."
"You're married to a politician," Phoebe pointed out unhelpfully.
"Yes. But no. Not married. An equivalent and ancient ritual, which appeased certain elements of the Cawlarian population that were concerned with my prospects." "I'm sure you have some. No offense, but-"
"Please don't."
"You seem more of the stabby and shooty type to me."
"Not really offensive," Huatil said, picking at the feathers near her mouth.
"For all I know, you're a pacifist. Alien cultures are strange."
"Not that strange. The word means the same. Pacifists do not exist at the top of Cawlarian government, and certainly do not make the decisions. War is horrible and a great blight upon civilized society, but it is as inevitable as the stars growing cold in the darkness of the far future." Phoebe nodded. "In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium... nevermind."
"What?"
"A reference to an even worse hypothetical universe than we live in."
"I don't understand," Huatil said.
"It's a 300 year old experimental and expansive science fiction universe, with enough attached lore and literature that it would take over 100 years to read it all."
"That sounds like a lie."
Phoebe laughed. "I assure you, it is not. Thousands of books, hundreds of movies, dozens of shows, and countless random internet articles remain as a testament to it. It became quite popular in the mid-2050s when society was starting to crumble too visibly for even the remaining political resistance to refute."
"Sounds interesting."
"Assuming you have immortality, then you might have the time for it. Though I'm not sure if even I'd be able to buy all the models."
"Aren't you the richest person in the Alliance?"
"Eighth richest, behind a few trillionaires. Third richest 'human,' though."
"Ah," Huatil replied. That was concerning. Inflation, over-expensive separate items or books, or a simple joke? She didn't know. And while establishing rapport with Phoebe could be considered valuable, and she was growing an interest in what Phoebe spoke of, she had certain things to attend to. She assumed the quote was well known enough for human networks to have the answer to it by a search. "Perhaps one day, such a cultural exchange might help me understand the motivations of those who wrote such a thing."
"You don't want to understand. But that does remind me of something," Phoebe said.
"What is that?"
"Make sure you take care of whatever mind-controlled cults you can find before they get too big." Huatil nodded. It was nice seeing her, even though Phoebe was now an exceedingly dangerous individual. Far more so than suspected. Luckily, the preparations for the attack on the local hive of suspected mind-control activity in the Forsaken City were underway. Agents were coming in, gathering information for the Blue Intelligence Agency about various locations of interest, possible choke points, routes to a command center, and so on.
"I have something else to tell you as well. There is a proposal in place, not yet ratified or voted on in any way, to form a treaty organization with your Alliance and the Vinarii Empire. Defensive, of course."
"I see. I shall also relay this news to the proper authorities. Though it is likely nothing will come of it, with so many species in the Alliance."
Her next assignment wouldn't be for another few thousand flaps. Using a specialized device, she linked into the specialized ansible data hub that processed and translated connections between the Cawlarian and Alliance networks. It was a new construction, far more stable than the last attempt. Notably, it was protected by cybersecurity programs so strong that no one even knew how to begin hacking them. It was likely due to Phoebe or Edu'frec's special work.
She looked up the quote and decided to do some light reading.
"Agent 001, it's time."
"What?"
"It's time. 3000 flaps have passed."
It just went deeper and deeper. Phoebe really had been telling the truth with her warnings.
"Right."
Agent 017 smiled at her. "You know, browsing human networks isn't mission-critical."
"Yes. I do. If you must write a report, do not mention what I was reading."
"Ah, so you have noticed their... penchant for drawing aliens?"
Huatil's feathers flared. "No. It's worse."
"Worse? Now I have to know."
"41st millennium."
Agent 017's wide-eyed look told her everything.
"No..." she breathed.
"Yes."
"If this gets out..."
"It's going to hit military culture like... I don't even know an analogy for the destruction this will cause."
"So you know, then," Huatil deadpanned. When she'd first had a presentation on alien cultural contamination and assimilation, she hadn't expected something like this. It was so utterly over the top, yet fascinating and entrancing. It was like watching a pile-up in that marathon flying race that had opened last year with 'no limit' on how many people could join. And then 2 million Cawlarians decided they wanted to take the day off and go flying.
The owner of that racing company had been sued into the ground under a class-action injury lawsuit, with 3 million claimants receiving yields. And he was serving nearly ten thousand standard years of jail time. Not that he'd live to even get a bit of that unless the Cawlarians got immortality treatments that were cheap en-masse in the next hundred years.
The pile-up had been a spectacle unlike anything known, though. Just like this random piece of human science fiction writing appeared it would be.
"I do. A little too much."
"How'd you find out?"
"An important government official retreated into their room for 6 days straight, refusing to answer any calls or attend any votes, consuming a copious amount of drugs, food, and water."
"How important?"
"Star system level."
"By Crawprawvabar's feathers, we're going to have to suppress this," Huatil replied.
"How?"
"Not my job."
"I pity the poor soul who has to try. I get the feeling it may not remain shackled for long."

"I am pleased to tell you that profits over the last five mega pulses are up 3%."
"Good," Zelisloa replied. "How well is the new model selling?"
"Its debut was much wider than the previous version, so faster. 3.5 times faster on average, with a rising number of local Sprilnav sharing their satisfaction online."
"Glad to hear it. I would like a word with the Grand Financial Manager."
"Under your eye, Elder Zelisloa," they chorused.
The rest of the Sprilnav left the meeting without complaint. Once the last of their faces disappeared, Zelisloa turned to him.
"So? Have the funds been siphoned?"
"They have."
"Good. You shall receive a portion of the allocated amount. 12%, as agreed."
"I thank you for your generosity, Elder Zelisloa."
"I thank you, Spentha 28. You're better than the original."
"He's an Elder, and I'm not."
"Yes. But that doesn't mean you are worse."
"Yes it does, by every metric that matters, power included."
"If it is power you want, the equivalent of one of the weakest Elders I know of, then I shall grant them. However, that will require some additional loyalty."
"I am yours," he said.
"Good. I will send you your instructions soon. For now, I will retire to my chambers, for a well-needed rest after doing no work."
Spentha 28 laughed. "That's what you pay me for, after all. Though at this point, there's nothing I won't do for you."
"I can think of a few things, but I will not waste my time testing you with random unpleasant and unlikely conundrums. You did good work."
"Under your eye, I shall do much more."
"Under my eye."
He returned the greeting he'd set up. Simple and to the point. He then focused on his latest project. The ships were on their way to the Alliance, receiving real-time communications from his biologists. They had fully studied human, Acuarfar, Breyyanik, Knowers, and Guulin anatomy. The gene banks of the Dreedeen, wanderers, and Junyli were known and also studied, but evolutionary drift still occurred, even under the harsh genetic locks the Sprilnav had placed on their genomes to curb it. The viruses were incubated and ready to spread by touch, proximity, water, blood, and even wildlife. Acuarfar immune systems were certainly an interesting task to subvert, according to some of his people.
Skira had been too risky. If that hivemind of mindless drones was able to discover the infection before it became deadly, that could mean it might be discovered too early and stopped. Zelisloa didn't want that.
He'd checked their initial aims. He'd asked for them to make it as lethal as possible at first, and they'd made viruses that were basically guaranteed to kill everyone they came into contact with. From there, he'd asked to lengthen the asymptomatic timeframe and the ability to evenly spread the viruses across species. That required them to manufacture the viruses for other species using the cells of the initial virus for the specialized host. That process required more mega pulses of time.
Finally, the means to spread it through wildlife was achieved. So now, all that the ships had to do was reach their targets, and the fun would begin. There would be a new pandemic in the Alliance, one that they wouldn't recover from.

2023.06.03 19:59 missfrizzle101 My experience using Sony ps5 warranty

I bought a ps5 from Best Buy, and 63 days later it wouldn't turn on. I tried all the tricks and no luck. I tried going to Best Buy but they unfortunately can't do anything after the 60 day return window. They gave me a reprinted receipt (which you WILL need for the warranty claim) and I went home to submit a claim online. Here's the timeline of my repair:
04/21/23 (Friday) - submit online claim and soon afterwards received an email confirmation of my claim submittal.
04/22/23 (Saturday) - I received an email stating the box to ship back my ps5 for repair was ready to be shipped (no tracking number is included in the email)
04/24/23 (Monday) - called Sony to ask for ETA and got tracking number
04/26/23-05/04/23 - called Sony multiple times. the box hadn't been received by Fedex yet. I was told they have 10 business days to get the box to me and that even if they don't get it to me in that timeframe, they'll still get the repair completed and ps5 returned within the timeframe of 20-30 business days. (Important note that business days do not include weekends, even though the box was prepared for shipping on a Saturday)
05/05/23 (Friday) - Fedex picked up the package from Sony, after nearly 2 weeks that an empty box was sitting at a Sony warehouse.
05/09/23 (Tuesday) - Fedex delivered the box to me. I packed the ps5 up - this is the part that you need the re-printed receipt for proof of purchase - and returned the box to Fedex just before they closed that evening.
05/17/23 (Wednesday) - PS5 was delivered to Sony for repair
05/26/23 (Friday) - PS5 was repaired and ready to ship back to me
06/01/23 (Thursday) - Fedex attempted to deliver PS5 during the only 15 minute window that no one was home lol
06/02/23 (Friday) - playstation was received. it works fine. All data was completely wiped which is unfortunate since I don't have unlimited data on my home internet plan and now need to re-download things strategically to not go over on data. There are also scratches on the console that weren't there before.
It's worth mentioning that I had a disc stuck in the PS5 that they gave instructions for removing and it did come out but I haven't yet tested it to see if it was damaged. Also I had subscription services through Sony that I couldn't use for over a month and Sony wouldn't reimburse anything towards them.
This was a long process for the repair and I'm disappointed with the way Sony treated me throughout it. While calling, the Sony representatives were stone cold and heartless. Even just asking for tracking numbers, I left the call feeling defeated (and then would get an email from Sony shortly afterwards with literally just a number, no description at all, not even a simple "Hello, here's that tracking number you requested"). I felt I had understandable questions such as: "why is the box not received by Fedex after 10 days? how long will the process take in total?" I really can't explain it but the Sony rep call center workers are just soul sucking to talk to and they destroyed my confidence in Sony.
The repair took about 5 weeks in total. The warranty period is only 52 weeks long, and I find it unreasonable that a repair can take up about 10% of the warranty with no repercussion. Not only am I out of luck on my subscriptions I pre-paid for then couldn't use, but I also have significantly less time to use my console within its warranty period because this repair took so long.
It's also worth noting that I have no idea what was wrong with my console, or even if this one I received is the same one. There was nearly no communication from Sony regarding details like this.
I read other stories of people going through using the warranty and it helped me know from the beginning that this would be a longer process and not always fun which was a bummer but that did help me manage my expectations for the process. I also feel that although my experience wasn't great, it did go fairly smoothly in comparison to many others I read. I hope this post helps anyone that's going through the repair process. I'm happy to answer questions regarding the warranty process.

New to OPNsense, trugling to establish PPPoE WAN connectivity
I'm new to OPNsense and thought I would give it a try, long time user of Pfsense for over 15 years so I thought the transition would be fairly easy but I'm struggling with this.
My ISP provides a SFP+ handoff and uses a PPPoE connection, should be pretty straight forward.
I'm using version 23.1.9 with all updates installed, Mallanox ConnectX-3 Pro card, I've enabled the Mellanox driver under Tunables. Server is a Supermicro SYS-5018D-FN8T
Have assigned my WAN connection to mlxen0 which shows a green indicator, the hardware LED indicates the link is up, and from the ISP side the link is up too, but not the PPPoE session.
Under WAN interfaces I am testing with just IPv4 only, and using a test account from the ISP (which is separate to my existing useline, as I have my previous Pfsense box connected separately until I get this working to replace it).
I'm struggling to find a suitable log file on OPNsense which would show what the issue is. On Pfsense I would have checked Status/System Logs/General, but the output of the equivalent page on OPNsense doesn't show any indication that PPPoE is being attempted, this is the relevant lines shown in the log:

2023.06.03 18:57 rune_officixl type me please

• How old are you? What's your gender? Give us a general description of yourself.
I am 18 years old and nonbinary (agenderflux to be specific).
• Is there a medical diagnosis that may impact your mental stability somehow?
Yes, a lot of them so I'm just going to list them here. - Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) - ADHD (Inattentive Type) - Social Anxiety - Moderate Depressive Episode (although I no longer agree with this diagnosis) - Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) - suspected Tourettes Syndrome - Complex PTSD - Maladaptive Daydreaming - Mixed Personality Disorder (including Borderline, Narcissistic, Dependent, Avoidant) - suspected OSDD1 or DID
Some of these are professionally diagnosed, others have been self diagnosed based on a lot of research and self analysis, as I currently do not have access to professional help and that likely won't change within the next years.
• Describe your upbringing. Did it have any kind of religious or structured influence? How did you respond to it?
My upbringing was not the best. I experienced emotional abuse from my mother from a very young age on, others say that there was physical abuse as well but I don't remember any of that. My father seemed very absent during my childhood. He is chronically ill, therefore he had alot of problems to tackle besides his family. I grew up relatively poor, although my parents attempted to not let me notice, they cut short on their own needs in order to always be able to fulfill the children's physical needs. Obviously they couldn't shield me from the facts forever, around the age of 10 I would notice how other kids in my age would have way more expensive things, etc. There is no religious background in my family. I was raised agnostic-atheist, but would not have been shamed for choosing to follow a religion. As a child my day was clearly structured: set meal times, a (forced) time to rest after lunch, set bed times. I would not always agree with them but not adhering to the rules would only bring me negative consequences so I eventually went along with it. The older I got, the more I enforced my own structures, as the pre-existing ones made my life harder, and at some point my mother also couldn't justify some of her rules anymore, considering I wasn't a young child anymore.
• What do you do as a job or as a career (if you have one)? Do you like it? Why or why not?
I am currently a tax consultant assistant in training and I quite like it. Obviously there are parts of it that I would rather avoid, such as interacting with clients, but the longer I am in this job, the less this aspect makes me want to quit it (although it fluctuates, depending on my mental state every day). My favorite part of my job is accounting, I am good with numbers and like tasks that don't require me to learn new laws every year (which is why after my apprenticeship I will probably ditch the tax part and focus on becoming an accountant. Obviously there's still things that change over the years, but not as many).
• If you had to spend an entire weekend by yourself, how would you feel? Would you feel lonely or refreshed?
It depends on whether I have something I'm interested in available for interaction, and on my mental state. Obviously, if I get depressed out of nowhere or suffer from an episode of anhedonia, I will not enjoy myself. Usually I will enjoy a weekend in solitude as long as I am busy with things I like. I like meeting my friends as well, but sometimes I lack the energy or motivation to meet them so I won't do it. Let's say that in 50% of the cases I would feel refreshed.
• What kinds of activities do you prefer? Do you like, and are you good at sports? Do you enjoy any other outdoor or indoor activities?
I don't like and am not good at sports. If I don't have to do them, that's good because I am everything except fit. I like taking walks, sometimes, when the weather is nice. Indoors I will usually be on my phone or at my computer, consuming media that interests me (usually video games or movies/tv shows). I also like to read, but lately I haven't had the energy to focus on reading. My favorite genres in media are Sci-Fi, fantasy, action and psychological horrothrillers.
• How curious are you? Do you have more ideas then you can execute? What are your curiosities about? What are your ideas about - is it environmental or conceptual, and can you please elaborate?
I am curious about quite a few things. My special interest is mental illness, specifically personality disorders and dissociative disorders. Not their history etc., but how exactly they affect people living with them, and their many different presentations. I am very curious about things concerning my special interest and hyperfixations (which are currently the video game Phasmophobia and the psychological horror show Generation Loss). What I am also curious about are moral and in general philosophical questions, as well as questions around consciousness (among other things connected to lucid dreaming) and what makes a person themselves.
• Would you enjoy taking on a leadership position? Do you think you would be good at it? What would your leadership style be?
I am unsure about this one. If everything went according to plan, maybe, but only if I wasn't the one making the plan on my own. I need people to reflect on the plan with, so I don't make fatal mistakes. My leadership style would most likely be a democracy, as I can't see myself enforcing my ideas at the cost of people's suffering. I may be self centered but with this many people's wellbeing at stake, I will not compromise my morals. I usually only compromise my morals around people I don't like.
• Are you coordinated? Why do you feel as if you are or are not? Do you enjoy working with your hands in some form? Describe your activity?
I have dyspraxia, so not really. Especially bigger movements are hard to coordinate for me, smaller ones are easier. It sometimes feels like the connection between my brain and the rest of my body is severed, because I see others do with ease what I struggle to do.
• Are you artistic? If yes, describe your art? If you are not particular artistic but can appreciate art please likewise describe what forums of art you enjoy. Please explain your answer.
I would call myself semi-artistic. I don't paint or draw, instead I feel very attuned to music and sound in general. I compose music, usually orchestral pieces. Added to that, I have also been into poetry for a while and I have written quite a few poems of my own. I enjoy all kinds of art, as long as I can give it a meaning (or it already has one that I agree with). Some of my friends write poetry or create digital art, I enjoy seeing these, as well as I enjoy music. The art I like the most is the one that makes me stop and think. The one that has a twisted meaning and can be interpreted in many different ways.
• What's your opinion about the past, present, and future? How do you deal with them?
The past just kind of happened. Positive experiences are easily forgotten, negative ones tend to stick around. There is no way to change it, and I don't know if I'm actually really dealing with it or if I'm just detaching from it. My memory is also pretty bad so I tend to forget a lot of what happens, therefore there is no time to deal with it and to process it. The present is something I don't feel all too connected to. It is happening around me and obviously I interact with it, but most of the time I feel distanced from it. Maybe 10% of the time I actually feel connected to what I am doing, saying, feeling, etc.. The future is scary. I would prefer to avoid it because things could always get worse than they already are. The future holds challenges that I don't feel equipped for. I take measures to avoid it, if possible, else I distract myself from it so I don't have to think about it. I think it's kinda noticable that I am a very avoidant and detached person.
• How do you act when others request your help to do something (anything)? If you would decide to help them, why would you do so?
It depends on who the other person is and if they pissed me off, or if I'm otherwise occupied. For example I will likely refuse to help my mother or sisters, especially if they pissed me off. However as soon as I am around people I can't be an asshole towards, I will swallow my pride and help to maintain my image of being a good person. There's people I don't want to lose and they can't know how I treat people I wouldn't care about losing (not as in I wouldn't care if they died, but I wouldn't care if they hated me. Obviously I would care about how they treat me when they hate me, but that's a different issue). I will usually help people I like, and I might help old people in public with stuff sometimes but I prefer to let others help, as usually I don't consider myself capable enough to help.
• Do you need logical consistency in your life?
Yes, I'd say so. If people do or say things that don't make sense/add up, and expect me to go along with them, it can drive me insane and I will not be able to function properly in such an environment. I try to make sense of everything that happens (to me), I dislike things I can't explain.
• How important is efficiency and productivity to you?
It's somewhat important to me, if the thing that is being done benefits me. If not, I myself might be lazy, inefficient and not productive. It also bothers me when other people do things inefficiently and then complain about the results. I feel better when I'm productive, but I don't like putting in the effort for it.
• Do you control others, even if indirectly? How and why do you do that?
Probably. I mean, everyone does to an extend. Action/reaction. People react to things in certain ways and you can use that in order to get what you need/want. Obviously I will not walk around attempting to emotionally manipulate people, but I will most definitely use what I've been given to my best in order to have my needs fulfilled. I recognize patterns in people and use them to my advantage and sometimes for example lead conservations in the direction I want them to go. I also control people in other ways, such as attempts at direct control (but only within my family). I will directly voice what I want or what bothers me and argue with them about it, with the expectation of them giving in. It doesn't really work, but it's an attempt.
• What are your hobbies? Why do you like them?
My hobbies include singing, playing video games, watching movies/tv shows, composing music and talking about philosophy or psychology. I like them because, well, I like them. I can't quite explain it better. They make me happy.
• What is your learning style? What kind of learning environments do you struggle with most? Why do you like/struggle with these learning styles? Do you prefer classes involving memorization, logic, creativity, or your physical senses?
My learning style is hyperfocus, I guess. I learn things the best when I'm fully interested and focused on them. However, if that isn't the case, I usually learn best by memorizing visuals to the point where I can recall them from my brain during exams. This has saved me quite a few exams by now. Memorization, logic, that's how I learn. I am also a visual learner, despite everything I thought in middle school (I used to claim that I wasn't a visual learner just so I didn't have to add pictures to my presentations. Had no success with that). I believe that the learning style I struggle the most with is creativity. If a teacher was to introduce a new topic and told me to creatively present it, I would probably be quite overwhelmed. But it also depends on the topic and the classmates around me. I might also be good at learning with my physical senses. You can only really grasp the essence of something if you have touched it, analyzed its mechanics yourself instead of just reading about it.
• How good are you at strategizing? Do you easily break up projects into manageable tasks? Or do you have a tendency to wing projects and improvise as you go?
I am not all too good at strategizing and used to be someone who would improvise projects as I go, but I am currently trying to learn to properly plan my projects. Especially in my job it is essential to be on top of your tasks.
• What are your aspirations in life, professionally and personally?
Professionally I want to become an accountant, preferably for a well paying company. However, I also have the dream of being a famous musician, basically living on stage and having everyone absolutely admiring me and also feeling inspired by the music I create. Personally I aspire to be someone people look up to and say "dude. They made it. Despite all of their struggles, they made it". I don't want to be a role model, but instead an inspiration for others. I also really want to heal from my trauma and mental illness and experience true happiness. I want to feel fulfilled when I die, like there is nothing I missed out on.
• What are your fears? What makes you uncomfortable? What do you hate? Why?
I fear a lot of things. I fear the unknown because of what it could hold. I fear failure because of how other people would see me. I fear making the wrong decisions because of how my life could worsen with no way to fix it. I fear being alone with no one to watch out for me because I don't think I could take care of myself. I fear other people because of how they could attack me, verbally and physically, for making mistakes, not fitting the norm, etc.. I fear the death of my loved ones because one, I cannot imagine a life without them and two, I am scared that I will move on too quickly and that feels immoral to me. I fear confrontation with anyone except my family because I feel like asking for consideration of my own needs hurts the ones I care about and am confronting, and I fear that they might leave because of it. I am uncomfortable with tons of stuff, from being confronted with my fears down to the am smallest possible issues like kids screaming, or similar stuff. I hate it when people don't see the obvious. Doesn't matter if they are incapable of seeing it or if they are ignoring it on purpose. I also hate it when people (my family) refuse to acknowledge my personal needs but expect me to acknowledge theirs.
• What do the "highs" in your life look like?
I don't know if it counts as a "high" if it lasts an hour at maximum. But those highs usually look like exciting days with friends, or me listening to really good music.
• What do the "lows" in your life look like?
During my "lows" I will usually have little to no energy, so I might lay in bed all day without eating or drinking much, unable to do something else except mindlessly scrolling on my phone to escape the dread in my mind. They tend to last longer than the "highs" do, but also tend to be ended by one of them.
• How attached are you to reality? Do you daydream often, or do you pay attention to what's around you? If you do daydream, are you aware of your surroundings while you do so?
I mean, I have maladaptive daydreaming. I have been daydreaming 50% of my life since I was a little child. And as I mentioned in the question about the past, present and future: I usually feel very detached or distanced from reality. Most of the time I am semi-aware of my surroundings when I daydream, I may even implement my surroundings. I will usually be able to quickly snap out of a daydream and react to reality, if needed.
• Imagine you are alone in a blank, empty room. There is nothing for you to do and no one to talk to. What do you think about?
I might think about any options I have to try and get out of it. Eventually I would give up and start thinking about my life, the good and the bad things, the people who might be worrying about me and I might feel sorry for making them worry. Part of the time I would use to daydream but eventually I would run out of ideas.
• How long do you take to make an important decision? And do you change your mind once you've made it?
It takes me a lot of time to make important decisions. Usually I make my choice last minute, as it is very hard to determine your future without knowing 100% of the consequences. I may change my mind very often about a decision, but not always. Sometimes I just go along with them afterwards.
• How long do you take to process your emotions? How important are emotions in your life?
I barely process my emotions. They overcome me, overwhelm me and then leave. I detach from them before I can process them. Emotions are somewhat important in my life, but they often hinder me from what I actually have to do so I don't have the best relation to them. However, I like inducing emotions on purpose by listening to certain music, etc., then I will 100% enjoy them.
• Do you ever catch yourself agreeing with others just to appease them and keep the conversation going? How often? Why?
Yes, usually around people I like and at work. These are people who I cannot disappoint or they might leave me or harm me otherwise. I do it all the time.
• Do you break rules often? Do you think authority should be challenged, or that they know better? If you do break rules, why?
I don't break rules often. I used to, as a child, but that was because the rules of my mother were way too strict and didn't allow me to be the child that I was. Most of the time I didn't even break them on purpose, but instead couldn't comprehend them because they didn't make sense to me. Authority should be questioned and challenged if needed. They definitely don't know better. They're only humans, such as you and I. Just because they happen to hold a lot of power over the general population doesn't mean that they know better. Power corrupts, which is why I very much mean towards challenging authority. However I don't do it myself, as it would put me into an unsafe situation.

2023.06.03 18:23 Mussarelinhagames The last ship of Humanity - Chapter 10

First / previous
Terran year 5201 - 14th of september
Species: human - Commander Steven - Aboard the UNCS United States, heading for the Grog star system of Gylit.
Commander Harry sent us to aid the grogs on the defense of one their systems, which is rich in minerals needed for shielding alloys, commander Ritcher said that their other ships are busy defending other systems, he told us that the grog emperor is willing to hand us a part of the asteroids of the system if we successfully protect their colonies, though they will already give us a lot of asteroids if we aid them in their railgun technology, which will benefit both parts.
Human ships use a special steel alloy covered with a outer mesh made from a titanium alloy, which gives it a shock absorbant outer layer and a extremely tough inner layer, which allows it to shrug railgun rounds if any manages to go past the plasma shields, so getting some fo the titanium asteroids in the system will be of great help.
However, we have yet to see what happens when our shields get hit by Cleyk weapons, the first Cleyk fleet that attacked us was unlucky enough to pick a fight with the UNCS Brazil, our only super carrier, so they didn't really have the chance to land a hit at the main vessel, especially when each of its 26 fighter shuttles have the same firepower of a destroyer...
Besides that, our fleet, composed of 3 carriers and 3 battleships, should be more than enough to fight the Cleyk fleet off, however, we can't lose any of the ships, humanity is already crippled in numbers, so losing lives is not an option. Even worse, the distance from the star system we settled on would make it nearly impossible to get help from UNCS Brazil, UNCS Argentina or UNCS Russia before we suffer with heavy casualties if things were to go wrong.
"Steven, we are approaching the border of the star system, what should be our next action? - Yìchén asked me.
"Commander Yìchén, park the UNCS China and the UNB Beijing in orbit around the planet with the grog colonies until further order, we need to map out the star system and plan out an strategy, the enemy will arrive here tomorrow at earliest, we have a bit of time. Tell the commander of the UNCS India to launch the maping shuttle drones to begin the maping process of the star system, the UNB Mumbai can stay in orbit with your carrier for now. "
"The UNCS United States will now try to find oi- cough, I mean, stabilish communications with emperor Reith to warn him about our diplomacy ship and the UNCS Russia."
"Alright sir!" - Yìchén responded.
"Alright, calling out."

Species: Grogs - Commander Ritcher - Emperor Capital.
Emperor Reith ordered me to park my fleet in orbit around the Capital planet, he also asked me to call him if we detect a 'suspiciously big ship and a small one' approaching the Emperor Capital.
I'm still curious on what he meant by tha-
"Sir! Our sensors detected 2 unknown vessels approaching the Emperor Capital!"- My sensor officer exclaimed
"Let me take a look at it, maybe its the humans."
"Oh, its them."
"It must be one of their carriers." - I said
But now, why send a carrier to escort a ship that small? - I asked myself.
"Sir, they are hailing us, should I let them thro-" - my Communication officer started.
"Yes" - I interrupted her.
"This is the UNCS Russia and UNDS Star Gaze, requesting permission to enter orbit." - they said over the communication link, they didn't even bother to turn on the screen this time.
"Greetings, humans, this is commander Ritcher speaking, permission granted." - I said
This is going to be a long day, Emperor Reith HATES to do diplomacy related stuff, I thought to myself while holding back a laugh.

Terran year 5201 - 16th of september.
Species: human - Commander Steven - Aboard the UNCS United States.
"Detecting unknown fleet approaching from 15 degrees north, estimated time of arrival, 15 minutes." - the ship's computer warned.
"They are here bois! Arm the fighter shuttles and order the battleships to load their 60 cm (23,6 inches) railguns! - I started.
"Commander Yíchen and Pablo, enter formation and start FTL sequence, we will intercept them before they get close to here!" - I ordered.
"Alright, estabilish communications with them, lets try to-"
"Multiple railgun railgun rounds inbound, engaging evasive maneuvering."
"Yep, they don't want peace, UNCS China and UNCS India, launch your fighters, UNB Mumbai, Beijing and New York, fire your main guns at their carriers." I ordered
The enemy fleet deployed hundreds of fighters, we have around 100 in total, our fighter shuttles are bigger, and more powerful, but they outnumber us in around 4 to 1, luckily our fighters are RC controlled
Our battleships are making quick work of their carriers, 2 salvos per carrier, after we destroy the carriers, we will be able shift the tides rapidly.
However, getting the angle for the salvos is proving to be difficult, as their fighters are literally swarming our battleships, luckily the shiels are holding up and the AFS guns are destroying some of their fighters.
"Their battleships and destroyers are focusing their fire at our carriers, UNCS China shields at 92%, UNCS India at 69%, and UNCS United States at 72%." - my shield controller said.
One of their destroyers came too close to the UNB Beijing and got promptly torn in half with a shot of one of the main guns barrels, it doesn't matter your level of technology, being hit by a 420 kilogram, depleted uranium tipped round going at 4% of the speed of light WILL cause some type of damage.
Our screen was filled with plasma rounds, some of our fighters battling 4 enemy fighters at once.
The battle lasted for hours, they managed to deplete the shields of the UNB New York and destroy 2 of her main guns, but as she is filled with AFS weapons she was quick to destroy dozens of them.
As we destroyed their battleships with anti matter torpedos and nuclear missiles, one of their battleships landed a salvo at us, our ship jerked violently when we got hit, our shields capacity was lowered by 45%, much more than I estimated.
Luckily the UNB Mumbai made quick work of that battleship with a salvo of one of her main guns.
The battle ended with them retreating, they lost 6 of their carriers, 17 battleships and 34 destroyers, the ones that survived were greatly damaged.
In the end, we lost 56 fighter shuttles, UNB new York lost 2 of her main guns and received extensive damage to its engines and left side of her hull, and UNB India almost got hit by a anti matter missile, which would have depleted its shield and caused extensive damage to it.
We called Commander Ritcher and told that we suceeded on defending their system, he said we could choose 2000 large asteroids to be dismantled as our reward, according to my calculations, we would be left with 1324 asteroids after we repaired our ships and built the new fighters.
In a few days, the construction of the UNSB Yamato will be started, a beast with 16 railguns with a caliber of 800 mm, made to kill planets, as those 2 ton rounds are accelerated to 30% of the speed of light...
The Cleyk will likely need to surrender in order to avoid the destruction of their colonies...
Autor here, I should also note that, on this story, Brazil became a superpower on the mid 2020's, and the decision of its government to stabilish a colony on the moon of Europa before 2050 led to a space race that ended up with the invention of FTL Travel and the complete unification of the countries of Earth, which is why the super carrier is named UNCS Brazil.

Gathering Storm Round 2 - The results!
Good day to everyone! Here are the results for round 2 of the Gathering Storm competition.
First, I want to start off with an apology for taking so long. I wish I had been able to give the results sooner, but unfortunately, May was quite an eventful month for me. Finding the time to make this post has been difficult, as writing it takes up quite some time. But, alas here it is, and I hope you will excuse the long waiting time.
I also want to quickly mention that the next round will take place at some point after the internal space rework has rolled out, likely somewhere in July. If you like these competitions, keep an eye on the subreddit by then, and consider participating in a different competition in the meantime :)
With that out of the way, I do want to thank everyone who participated. I loved seeing some of you mention that getting the vehicle up to 50 km/h was quite a challenge, as that was exactly what it was meant to be :). Some of you have been in competitions before, while there were also some newcomers. With 8 participants, I feel like I am still able to rank all entries and give them a review. If we do at some point reach over 10, I may start to limit the number of entries discussed in the result posts, but I don't think we'll get there soon XD.
I have changed the scoring again, making armour its own category (with less weight due to the nature of this round). It was somewhat clunky for me to properly adjudicate points to it as a subcategory of 'utility,' like it was previously. This system should be much better at rewarding additional protection overall.
As always, I will also mention that while certain designs were better than others, I could tell that every single one had effort and thought put into it. In this particular round, you were asked to design an alternate universe Type 97 Chi-Ha, and I believe all (well, most, I'll get to that) designs offered an alternative worthy of consideration.
With that out of the way, let's get into the meat of this post: The results!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8th place: The Type 97 "Zako" by u/benkavin.
https://preview.redd.it/oevbdra65s3b1.png?width=1446&format=png&auto=webp&s=5ec59a26fbeb9347ae4f6b50be6a08f29e156ce4
This vehicle was certainly an interesting one to test out. I myself was quite surprised it ended up as the lowest ranked entry, as u/benkavin is quite a seasoned competition participant, ending up in the category top 5's of TEABAG several times. So, I will summarize why. As a quick disclaimer though, there is a method to the madness, and what I will say, I mean in a more playful manner rather than an offensive one. Please take that into consideration as you read the roast review of this vehicle.
So, what is there to like about this tank? Several things, actually. It has a very low and generally small profile, which helps with its stealth. All this space is efficiently used, as all three crewmembers get the full cubic meter of space. Its engine is in the front, acting as an additional layer of protection, while the sprocket and transmission are in the back to spread the weight better. The radio antenna can be pushed out of the way when the turret turns, meaning it will not restrict turret movement. The suspension is simple (coil springs) and should be relatively easy to maintain. I also quite like the shape of this tank - especially the front part. It also clearly advertises that this is a light and nimble vehicle.
Now, onto the less good parts.
Some of the more observant among you may have noticed some flaws already. To start off with some visual/constructional flaws: The air vent in the direct front forms a weakspot, the exhaust blocks most of the driver's vision, and the protrusion at the back prevents the turret from rotating 360° and doesn't serve a particular purpose as far as I could tell. While the shape of the vehicle is quite nice in my opinion, it did lack any national decals or insignia. The suspension itself ingame is not well designed, and the vehicle bounces around on any bumps it crosses, so much so that I had to steer when driving over the testing bumps to stay on them.
The backside protrusion blocks the cannon
Needless to say, due to these flaws it scored quite low in the aesthetics and mobility categories. The armour protection was up to standard after a small revision, but not much more than necessary. In utility, it performed better in some aspects; it had 17° gun depression, 100% crew space, albeit for 3 crewmembers. There was one peculiarity where it rose above the competition, as it had a gearbox with only 5 gears in total (4f, 1r) to bring it up to the required 50 km/h. Still, it is sadly not enough to escape the last position.
The pitch for this vehicle is quite short, but well made and nicely edited as pictures. While the limited length and the disclaimer at the end limit the salesmanship effectiveness, the rest makes up for it somewhat, meaning the pitch got a decent score overall.
So, all this makes it the bottom-scoring entry for this particular round. And yet, with all this taken into account, this is one of my favourite entries. Now, you may wonder, why? Well, as I mentioned, there was a method to this madness. In one of the comments under the pitch Reddit post, our builder mentions the name means "Inferior Fish," and that this vehicle was designed by Chinese sympathizers in occupied Manchuria. This made me chuckle somewhat, as it puts a lot of the flaws into context. This also explains why the entry is at the bottom of the competition; it was made bad intentionally. It is the sprocket entry equivalent of purposefully failing a test, something that many people argue to be just as hard as succeeding on a test.
So, with that, I take my hat off to you, u/benkavin, for purposefully creating a severely flawed vehicle and creating a decent pitch to try and sell it off to the invaders. While it did not win you the competition, I suspect that that was never the intent with such an entry. You can be very proud of your bottom score, as your vehicle excelled in what you made it to be.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7th place: The Type 6 Ke-Ha by u/Face_Stabbed.
https://preview.redd.it/2w34cgnn5s3b1.png?width=1245&format=png&auto=webp&s=fdb7b8a64d85c6e81ded502159d9dd730f005192
A returning participant from round 1, which is nice to see. This vehicle, while its overall score was low, has some interesting qualities.
It had a decent score in utility, mostly due to the large amount of fuel it carries: 860l in total, more than any other vehicle in the competition, which would enable the vehicle to perform long-distance operations with ease. It also carried the most ammunition, with 186 37mm rounds in total. It gave its three crewmembers maximum space, and fulfilled the preferred 6-speed gearbox. It also features three machine gun mounts; two at the front and one at the back of the turret.
It didn't score great in the aesthetics category. Not because I think this is an ugly vehicle by any means, but rather due to the lack of national characteristics. I like the angular shape of the front, the protrusion at the back of the turret for the radio and machine gun, and the sponson shape at the front and back. It also looks very believable; you can easily imagine three crewmembers sitting quite comfortably within this vehicle. However, it does not exactly look like a Japanese vehicle, neither in shape nor in the details. There are also no national decals of any kind present, meaning that there was a small point reduction there.
Its mobility and armour protection scores were adequate overall, though this vehicle suffered somewhat from the steering. It felt quite sluggish, both at low and high speeds. This made driving it difficult at times. My advice is to have a stronger first gear. This generally improves steering, especially at low speeds. The frontal hull armour does offer great protection due to the angling, and will likely bounce most things the Chinese could throw at it.
The pitch was well-written; it had a logical structure and laid out the vehicles' characteristics very well. From reading it, you can really tell that it was carefully designed. It also included a stat sheet, and was decent at salesmanship.
While this is near the bottom in the ranking, this is by no means a bad vehicle. I recommend keeping in mind the country that you are designing for, and trying to make the best of the space available, as there was a lot of free room left in the vehicle. With that advice, I would not be surprised to see you rise up in future competitions, as this design shows you have a great foundation in your sprocketeer skills!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6th place: The Type 96 Te-Ha by u/Legodudelol9a.
https://preview.redd.it/kbqq6klq5s3b1.png?width=1098&format=png&auto=webp&s=28c42bc65f983791c536d3bdc84095b8bc631685
Now, I cannot help but feel that this vehicle does look a little bit cursed, with the huge turret on the small hull. However, this is because it is re-using parts from existing designs submitted to other competitions. As refurbishing old tanks or creating designs using older parts wasn't out of the question in real life, I think it is an acceptable reason. Also, while it is not mentioned in the pitch, I do like to think that this is the reason the name is from the year before (Imperial Year 2596, or 1936 in the Roman years).
Now, let's start with the review. This vehicle had a stellar score in utility, and scored the second highest in that category. From past experience, this seems to be a bit of a trademark for our moderator, as he's quite good at fitting a lot in a tight space. Or, to word it slightly less like an innuendo, he is quite good at using the available space. This tiny vehicle has 104 37mm rounds, 800l of fuel, nearly 20° of gun depression, maximum space allocated to four crewmembers, and three machine guns.
The latter is also one of its flaws, however. Simply put, I think putting two machine guns that close to each other may make them nearly impossible to use, as they are likely in each other's way. The hull does also seem to be too small to realistically fit the driver and all the other hardware listed previously. Other than that, it does have the typical Japanese characteristics in its shape, especially with the asymmetrical turret.
Its score in mobility was very mixed. It is the first vehicle reviewed here that managed to surpass the 50 km/h, topping out at around 50.8 km/h. It overcame all required obstacles and its steering was very smooth at all speeds, most likely due to the short length of the hull. However, it was the joint worst scoring entry on the obstacle course, together with the Type 97 "Zako." It suffered from the same issues; only three wheels with a very stiff suspension means that it just bounces around while trying to drive. It definitely lost out on a lot of points in that regard, but it was likely a necessary sacrifice to help cross the trench and climb the step obstacle.
The frontal hull and turret armour are thicker than requested, making it quite durable in a hull-down position, which is complemented by the great gun depression. Other than that, the armour fulfills the requirements and not much more. The pitch was well-structured and laid out the details of the vehicle well, but sometimes it felt more like a technical summary rather than a sales pitch. While those details are important, they are not the main reason that makes the pitch stand out to potential buyers.
All in all, I am once again surprised at all the utility that fits in such a small machine. A decent entry overall.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5th place: The Type 19 Ha-To by u/bonnibelio.
https://preview.redd.it/xi96s76u5s3b1.png?width=1318&format=png&auto=webp&s=2bfd3373a075b11ae4727bcb6a26acf20376421b
Now we get to the top five entries. This was the first submitted entry to this particular round, and by a first-time participant no less. This is a solid first entry overall. In fact, it managed to score a category win in the newly made 'armour' category. While this category had a lower weight this round due to the nature of Japanese tank design, it is no mean feat.
Its frontal protection went up to 50mm effective armour in places, and this was not just on small spots. The lower and upper glacis, as well as the sponsons and the turret side were well protected. Even then, the actual thickness of the flatter plates was 25mm on the hull and 30mm on the turret. These are significant differences, meaning that even dedicated anti-tank guns of the time will struggle to penetrate the front at a long to medium range. Even on the sides, the plate behind the tracks is 25mm thick, meaning they too are tough to crack.
This added armour did somewhat impact the top speed, but it did manage to get to the required 50 km/h. It was also able to climb all required inclines and had a very well set up twin-transmission for both acceleration and steering. However, while I tried my best to overcome the 0.5m step, I wasn't able to do it. I even tried it backwards, but sadly it refused to climb it, no matter the method. So unfortunately I had to deduct some points there.
The pitch was well structured and had some great pictures to go along with it, but it was lacking in salesmanship and era-appropriateness. This is likely due to the text itself being quite short. Now I don't require an essay referencing historical documents, of course, but I would say this area has the most room for improvement. Why were the Japanese looking for a tank, and why should it be yours? What is it expected to face, and what does this vehicle bring to the table to meet that threat? Those kinds of questions should be answered in a solid pitch, and they are not. I think if you keep them in mind in the future, that they will be of great use in writing your future pitches.
In terms of utility, the Type 19 surpasses some of the requirements. It gets some bonus points for the 700l of fuel, and in addition offers a good 18,0° of gun depression, four crewmembers with decent space, more than one MG mount, and 6 gears per transmission.
The aesthetics were also good, though it did also miss out on some points here. So, first of all, this vehicle very much looks the part of a Japanese tank, especially with the turret. However, it does look much more like a late-war design rather than an early-war one. I don't think this is surprising given the great Chi-Nu replica that u/bonnibelio was also working on, but it does mean it loses a point for era-appropriateness. The turret and hull look nice, but the hull does feel a little squished to me. I think crawling in there would have been difficult at the very least. The design does make great use of crewparts and decals to decorate the tank, as you can see here:
There are decals that decorate certain parts of the tank, like the cupola, the custom fuel port, the plates on the turret, and the protective bars around the exhaust. I've seen parts and decals been used as decoration many times, but using them in tandem like this is a great skill, and it is executed very well on this design.
All in all, this design is a good entry, especially for a first-time participant. u/bonnibelio, you can be proud of your creation.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4th place: The Type 4 Kin no Suisei (Ki-Su) by u/mei9k.
https://preview.redd.it/4ksdtlrw5s3b1.png?width=1354&format=png&auto=webp&s=6844263ad430dcd46c1150896bd73dfe457f09c2
Another great entry from a first-time participant. Some of you may immediately see the resemblance to the old Type 89 I-Go (Chi-Ro) medium tank, the first domestic design by the Japanese. As it played a major role in the conquest of Manchuria in the early 30's, seeing a tank clearly evolved from that design for the later China campaigns is not out of the question.
This vehicle had a shared top score in aesthetics. This is likely not a surprise if you take the time to look at the tank. It is a very unique looking machine, yet it makes sense given the history. It received top marks for national identity and a very high score for historical accuracy as well. I was also quite happily surprised to see the return of using placable plates for decoration, something that was much more popular back when rivets were not a thing yet in the game. And it looks great on this machine! The plates are all very neatly worked into the shape of the design.
The turret has the typical round-ish shape with a machine gun sticking out the back, with nicely smoothed out plates. The hull, as mentioned, is very reminiscent of the Type 89 medium tank in its shape. In the pitch, it is said to be inspired by the cavalry riding horses, and one could see the resemblance. On top of the great shape, there is also plenty of details to look at, including custom wooden/bamboo boxes for stowage, access hatches for the engine, crew hatches in the turret and the front, and a special protrusion for the driver. I do imagine it may be quite tight for his legs, though, given how far forward the driver's visor is. Other than that, no major drawbacks were found aesthetics-wise.
https://preview.redd.it/cd9k1pt66t3b1.png?width=1372&format=png&auto=webp&s=79945ed19a3b97bc684393bdaced6f40b8736554
And, well, they also made a variant with rust and decay, which looks pretty sick tbh:
Freshly dug-up out of the mud
While the looks were the best part of this machine, it is not its only quality. While the armour fulfilled the minimum and did not exceed it significantly in any place, the mobility score was also quite good. It manages to almost reach 51 km/h, so it was among the faster entries in the competition. It managed to overcome all necessary obstacles, and its steering was very smooth as well. Despite its strong suspension, the ride was relatively smooth over bumps - mostly because of speed and smaller roadwheels.
Its utility score was on the lower side, which is not surprising given the small size of this tank. It carried the required fuel, ammunition, has three crewmembers at full space, and offers 17,0° of gun depression, and used the 57mm cannon, but that is all.
Another strong point of this entry was the pitch. It is well structured, and takes the historical context of the designed vehicle's task into account. It lays out the details of the vehicle well and has good pictures to accompany it. A solid pitch and entry overall, especially for a first-time participant.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3rd place: The Nanakyū-shiki keisensha Kehe (Type 97 Ke-He) by u/Nicholpher.
https://preview.redd.it/hn3a1co66s3b1.png?width=1311&format=png&auto=webp&s=7b25d85bba29faa48ef37583b21b9dd31e24859c
Our bronze medalist is not a first-time competition participant, but is relatively new still. However, this did not stop them from making a killer entry. Just from a first glance, you can already tell that this is a nicely compact design, and from testing it I can confirm that it uses its space to the fullest.
The top half of the scores in Utility were all very close, and this design was among them. Within this small machine, there is 800l of fuel, 6 gears, and four crewmembers at maximum space all cramped together. This entry also has the best gun depression out of all entries, sporting an impressive 19,8° on the 57mm anti-infantry cannon. It also has two machine guns; one in the mantlet for the gunner and another in the back for the commander. This makes it a well-rounded machine overall in the intended theater.
It managed to get the category win in mobility, even though it was not the fastest entry. But as I was grading it, I found that several machines had some shortcomings of some kind. Some had a bumpy suspension, others had trouble steering, etc. This one just does everything good. It overcame all obstacles, performed a smooth ride on the testing bumps, and had great steering capabilities at all speeds. This was mostly due to a very well-tuned twin transmission. In essence, this vehicle shows that good mobility does not always equal great speed.
With the great mobility score, it will not come as a surprise that the armour score was not the highest. Although there was increased protection on the hull rear and turret sides that the crew would appreciate, if only for morale.
Aesthetics wise, this entry scored decently as well. There wasn't any particular subcategory where it over or underperformed in this regard. It had a good national identity and era-appropriateness score, and it looks decently realistic in shape as well (i.e. it looks like humans would fit inside). It makes great use of crew parts to add further functionality like the smoke launchers. It also features the two hatches for the two transmissions in the front, a great detail to add. Interestingly, it doesn't feature any national flags, but it does have several markings on it that look like production numbers or slogans. As such, I did reduce the points gained from the decals slightly, but it's still a positive score.
Finally, we arrive to the pitch, which also had a good score overall. The presentation format is interesting, with the Japanese on top and English below. This did make reading somewhat harder due to the separation, but the text itself was well-written and well-structured. The various capabilities of the vehicle are laid out and highlighted, explaining some of the decisions made in the design process. The pictures were nicely framed, but I felt that the filter takes away a lot of the detail within, so it scored a little lower in that regard. Still, a solid pitch and entry overall, and a worthy receiver of the bronze medal.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2nd place: The Type 97 Ke-Ho by u/Cardinal_Reason.
https://preview.redd.it/5jkkhxnnct3b1.png?width=1333&format=png&auto=webp&s=b0d5b7b7edc2d4a31f782321bbc34f6344559b92
Our silver medalist is also a relative newcomer, and like the previous entry they too did an excellent job. In fact, I found it quite interesting that they ended up receiving the highest score in two categories - an impressive feat!
One of those was the utility category. The vehicle has the desired 800l of fuel covered, offers 19,7° of gun depression, has four crewmembers with maximum space allocated, the preferred 57mm cannon, 6 gears and even a whopping four MG mounts. The thing that pushed them ahead of the competition on top of all this was likely the extra ammunition, carrying 60 rounds of 57mm high-explosive rounds and 15 rounds of armour piercing. While I didn't find any information on this particular cannon firing anything other than high-explosive, the space for those shells still counts towards the total. In essence, this little machine has all the kit required for the operations in the vast space of China.
This machine's armour fulfills only the requirements, with exception to the thicker plate of 25mm on the front of the turret, something that will effectively protect the crew in hull-down positions. This did make this vehicle one of the lighter entries, which is reflected in its excellent mobility score, coming in as a second in that category. This particular entry is the fastest in this round, reaching an impressive 52.6 km/h. It performed well in the other subcategories too, with the exception of the bumps, where it was plagued by a too soft suspension. This, in combination with the unevenly spread roadwheels, meant that it kind of bounced around and was hard to control. The steering was adequate, as the twin transmission wasn't perfect, and tended to slow down the tank significantly when steering. However, other than that, this vehicle performed great in terms of mobility.
Aesthetics wise, this vehicle had a good score as well, coming in second after the joint category winners. It had a very high score in national identity, both in terms of shape and decals. It also had a good score in era-appropriateness. I don't think that one needs much explanation either. It is not difficult to imagine this vehicle in the Chinese theater next to a Type 95 Ha-Go. It is also nicely decorated with the Imperial flag and the Sakura (cherry blossom) decals.
Finally, we touch on the other category win that this vehicle managed to secure: The Pitch. This particular pitch has received top marks in several subcategories, most notable in terms of structure and salesmanship. Seriously, at the end of the pitch all I could think was "Shut up and take my money!" It does a good job at laying out the specifications and details of this vehicle, and presents it in a way that is very persuasive, especially to the Imperial army. Touching on the situation Japan was in, their plans for the future, and how this vehicle was going to fit in those plans was what made me give it the top marks. On top of that, it also has nicely framed and edited pictures. The one thing that I missed was a stat sheet, but it did not cost you your well-deserved category win. It was very convincing and well thought-out, and it got your entry the well-deserved silver medal.

1st place: The Type 97 Ke-Ru by u/Drallo.

Our golden medalist, once dubbed 'Bargain-bin Lily' by our resident Minister of Military Expenditure himself, is none other than u/Drallo. This entry once again highlights that consistently performing well in several categories is the thing that wins you competitions like this. While he did also bag one category win, this entry did score second or third in most other subcategories.
The one exception to this is the mobility, where this entry was fourth. It is still a good score overall, however. It managed to barely get the 50 km/h required, but performed good in all other aspects. It overcame all obstacles, was relatively comfortable over bumps, and had good steering capabilities. While it struggled somewhat with the higher speeds, it did accelerate very well, and got up to a decent speed quickly. While it did not excel in this particular category, it is certainly a mobile and maneuverable vehicle. It is mentioned in the pitch that "Your evaluation crew will find a nimble vehicle that does not fight or complain to its driver - it listens and obeys." After evaluating it I wholeheartedly agree with that statement.
The lower mobility score can be easily explained when one looks at the armour of this machine. Coming in at 5.79 tonnes, it is among the heavier entries. This is because the hull and turret front are significantly thicker than requested, with armour effectiveness ranging from 30mm to 50mm in some places. This means that it will be able to shrug off even dedicated (small-calibre) anti-tank weapons at medium ranges, a great feat for a light vehicle. The hull rear and turret sides are also a couple of millimeters thicker. All this meant that this vehicle got the second place in terms of protection.
It got its third place in the Utility category, bringing 800l of fuel and 78 rounds of 57mm ammunition into the fight. It also has an impressive 17,5° of gun depression and the desired 6 gears. It does have four crewmembers with limited space, particularly for the driver and gunner. Other than that, it had the preferred cannon and multiple MG mounts scattered around the vehicle, meaning it will be well-armed against the expected infantry.
The pitch for this vehicle was also great, getting a close second place in that category. It scored high in salesmanship, details, and received the top marks for the many pictures. Each one is nicely framed and presented. There is even a leather cover of the official report! In addition, it provided a decent acknowledgment of the Japanese plans, helping with the era appropriateness score. Finally, a nicely made stat sheet gave us a good overview of the vehicle's capabilities.
It will likely not come as a surprise that this vehicle was the other category winner in terms of Aesthetics. While the national identity score was somewhat lower, mainly due to the turret shape, all the other subcategories made up for it. It very much looks like it was designed in the late 30's, and the large turret actually makes it look like three people could fit in there. Most points came from the details, though. With many custom decals, grates, hatches, smoke launchers, and some well-placed spare parts, this looks like a vehicle ready for combat.

There's just so much to look at on this vehicle - so many little details that make it as good as it is. I can only recommend to check out the pitch if you haven't already. The pictures he makes are much better and do this vehicle more justice than I could. All in all, it is a well-crafted entry for a well-deserved win.

And that concludes this particular round of Gathering Storm! Congratulations to the winner, and thanks again everyone for submitting your designs. While it took me much longer than I had hoped, I enjoyed testing and grading them. Keep an eye out in July for the next round, and let me know if you have any questions or comments. See you all hopefully next time!

2023.06.03 16:40 Buff_Knurttt A rambling introduction...what a community

I saw a lot of therapists over the years, got a few different diagnoses at different times: depression, ADHD, borderline, but the one that stuck most prominently was Autism. I didn't really agree with the autism when I was diagnosed. I'm not bad at reading people, in fact I am very good; I had to be. My mom was partial to that label though. To her it meant I was broken from the start, that I was incapable and that I should simply be locked away.

Stopped going to therapy, felt useless dwelling on myself like that, trying to fit into the prescribed boxes doctors told me I checked. For a while I did okay. I was constantly, glaringly, aware of the fact that I couldn't connect with other people, but I told myself that was a good thing. I never felt human and I didn't want to because I thought that made me stronger, less tied to "petty things" like empathy, but I couldn't always pretend.

I especially couldn't pretend once I started to use drugs more heavily. At first it was a great time with weed, actually letting go and feeling like I could be myself around people. Then, the tolerance started to creep in. Instead of losing control I would teeter on the edge, with too many mental faculties to let go of the walls, but too few to keep them standing; it started to be a terrifying experience. What was the solution, more harder drugs of course.

The first time I did mushrooms was mind blowing, finally I felt a real connection to people and the world, and through this connection I realized that I was afraid of the people I was around. I had built my home in this world out of eggshells. I cut them off and retreated into myself. It was something I'd done many times before, but this time was different. I could no longer lie to myself about not wanting connection, now I knew the truth that I was utterly afraid of it.

I spent the next couple years sinking deep into a pit of drug-induced half lucidity and isolation. There's a lot to tell there, a story of choosing not to die, but right now I don't think it's germane to the point of this already very long post; it's just a lot of suffering. Believe it or not this post is supposed to express the hope that I feel right now, so, on with the climbing out.

Eventually I started trying to pull myself together. Part of that was moving far away for a fresh start. Not my healthiest coping mechanism but one I needed to employ at the time. I kicked the drugs, started working again, and got myself back in school. I should have felt better, but the harder I tried to connect with people, the more hopeless I felt. I couldn't justify, to myself, any interaction with people when I "knew" that interaction with me only led to misery. It was maddening to want, more than anything, only to be a person, but still not deem myself worthy of such things.

In what I considered a last ditch effort before once again throwing in the towel, I tried to go back to therapy. This time I had a different goal though. I went in there brandishing my autism diagnosis, begging them to tell me that I was inherently broken and worthless, that I could never be human. I want to clarify that I don't think this about autism. My autistic friends are the only people I've ever really felt connected to, they're wonderful. I just really wanted to be able to justify giving up on being human, and I had been trained me that this was a good excuse.

Much to my dismay however, I got a wonderful therapist, a true healer. I went in there talking about how "because of autism I was this way" and "because of autism I feel like that", and she told me she didn't think I was autistic. I was mad. I had never really connected with the diagnosis, but now it was my justification; I was clinging to it. I very nearly didn't go back after that first session, not sure why I did.

As time progressed, she refused to diagnose me with anything, though we did discuss borderline quite a bit. She thought it was unhelpful to give people labels if they were just going to use them to box themselves in; I came to agree. Instead we just worked.

It took a long time before I accepted that the what was done to me was abuse and even longer for me to accept that I didn't have to be okay with it. She helped me to simply sit and feel, to be present; with that came the validation of my own emotions. She helped me to set boundaries and act on my own behalf rather than becoming whatever person I needed to be for someone else. She helped me find and accept as okay the desire to have human connection, even though my skills need work.

We worked together for a few years, then one day, I felt like I was done. I didn't feel "fixed" or anything like that, but I did feel like I had the capability to continue on my own. I will be eternally grateful to her for the incredible help she provided, and for the fact that in all that time, never once did she provide me a diagnosis.

It's been almost two years since then, and I am still doing better each day. I still struggle with a lot of typical social interactions, feeling of utter and worthless emptiness, and maintaining connections, but damn-it I keep trying. In many ways I am happy, though I'm still not really sure what that means.

Anyways, why did I stop lurking after seven years and feel the need to write all of this? I want to just say I don't know and leave it at that, but that's not true. The truth behind the reason for this rambling is threefold.

The Actually Relevant Part

1) A few months ago I reached back out to an old friend (I'm traveling halfway across the world to see her next week now) and I remembered a show recommendation she gave me the last time we were together; she said I reminded her of the main character. I finally watched it, and she was on the money, I really do relate to him. That made me have a pretty uncomfortable realization that there is a very specific type of character that I actually relate to in media: someone desperately trying to connect with others but unable to because of childhood trauma (usually CSA).

2) I now live in another country and am trying to set up a doctor here, that means manually requesting and transferring records. In the process I found that while my therapist never diagnosed me to me (still maintain that was a good call), for insurance purposes, she was treating me for PTSD. I was a little shocked by this, we never directly discussed PTSD but I felt like that was farther off base than many of the things we did discuss, so I put it out of my mind.

3) I wrote a poem today, one that I really like, which is rare. I don't share my poetry for reasons I think you all can probably guess at, but I really wanted this one to be out there. I went to OCPoetry, but they require you to critique others poems before posting. I like that policy, but I got stuck because I didn't feel like I have a valid opinion on anyone else's art.

For some reason all three of these things kind of just clicked together in brain and staring at reddit on my desktop (which I never do), I wondered if there was a CPTSD subreddit. I expected it to be like when I browse the subreddits for the different diagnoses I've received over the years: some moderately relatable content, some stuff that I cannot possibly understand, nothing that makes me feel seen.

Everything here, it just hit me like a ton of bricks. All of it made me feel real. like it was possible for people to know who I was. For the first time ever, I felt compelled to share with a community. I guess I wanted you all to know that: that you made me feel seen. I chose to share this story specifically because it is the broad strokes story of how I have always looked for that.

tldr I am introducing myself with a long rambling story about searching for answers as to my lack of humanity. I think I wrote it entirely for me, and I think that's okay.
