This is my first ever post, but I've been questioning myself on my decision for years, so here I am. Am I the AH.
It was 3 months after the end of my first big relationship, I (F23) of course was still upset and pretending that I was okay, while secretly hoping we would get back together even though I already knew it wasn't a good relationship. Obviously, he left me, and of course I became best friends with the wives in the friend group (bridesmaid for both weddings) so he was stuck being a part of my life.
Now I will say he's a dick and did his best to kick me out of the friend group at every turn. As a peace offering to be okay being around each other and hanging out as mutual friend I set up a friend outing to our BARmuta triangle downtown. It was the friend group plus my best friend from freshman year of high school, who never fully fit in with my other friends, but I loved her and couldn't imagine ever leaving her behind. She was my partner in crime, we were going to get matching tattoos soon. If you could tell from the past tense, she is who I left, who I cut contact with, I'll call her Sam.
Sam and I went out as usual, I buy the both of us drinks all night because that was the only way to get her to come out with me. We are having fun, the night is going well, ex wasn't completely ignoring me, but we still kept our distance. Towards the end of the night we end up at this bar with a seating area where most of us were hanging and chatting and resting from the bar crawl, ex, Sam and a couple others go off and do their own thing, play pool, go out and smoke, whatever. That is where the night ended, I thought it went well for the most part.
That was all backstory. The next morning, Sam comes over to drive me to my car at my other friend's house since I got us an Uber home. The first thing she does is sit me down and tell me how she made out with my Ex. I was hurt, I felt utterly betrayed, not my Ex, he owed me nothing at this point, but by her. I know I have no claim over him, that was never the issue for me. It was her knowing how I felt, knowing I wasn't over him yet, and her making a move on him. However, I was originally angry at him, so I told her it was okay, and I still loved her, it wasn't a big deal. And then it festered, and I realized why it wasn't sitting right with me, she is the one who betrayed me, not him. The excuse she gave me was she was so drunk she was seeing double, she didn't mean to, blah blah blah, I was so hurt I called out of work the next day, I didn't even do that when he broke up with me.
She asked me to go to dinner with her to make amends, except I paid and any time I tried to bring up the topic to her betrayal she would brush it off and change the subject. She wanted me to just be over it and pretend it never happened, but I couldn't.
Now a full week has passed since the incident and I called to tell her I'm not okay with it, I tried to be but I just am not. We both cried, I said I needed time. She would invite me out and I made excuses why I couldn't see her, I felt nauseous at the thought of being alone with her, I couldn't stand to look at her. After about 2 months I felt I was ready to talk again and start hanging out again, I checked out Facebook to see what she was up to and make sure she was doing well, but she had unfriended me. I took that as her writing me off and I didn't reach out. We haven't spoken in 4 years, and I lost a sister. So Reddit did I overreact, should I not have needed time, was I the problem, am I the asshole?

Baby paramedic, got my card about 6 weeks ago, started at a new agency recently and had my second shift off training today, just me and an EMT. Things have been going well but had my first "Oh shit" moment as an in charge Medic today.
Got dispatched to a nursing home for AMS, possible sepsis, nurse said patient just wasn't acting their usual self. Ordered labs and white blood cell count came back in the mid 30s. Do our assessment, patient is AOx4, answering everything appropriately but a bit lethargic. ABC's all good, palpating weak but regular radial pulse around 80. HR from the pulse ox is around there as well. Mildly hypotensive around 100/70, patient said they hadn't been eating or drinking much the past 2 days. Get in the truck, started a line, got some fluids going. Skin was warm to the touch but several temp checks came back around 98.0. Sugar around 160. No mention of a cardiac history from the nurse, and didn't suspect anything cardiac related, so to be completely honest just didn't even really think about putting leads on, which looking back probably should have. Get going towards the hospital, reassessing patient enroute, everything seems fine, BP is improving, patient's mentation isn't changing, no additional complaints. 10ish minutes out from the hospital, reassessing again and I notice their pulse has gotten very rapid and irregular. Still no change in mentation, and patient said they felt the same. Throw a 4-lead on and they're in A-fib with RVR bouncing between 150-190 on the monitor. At this point I go from feeling relatively good about how things are going to shitting myself. Immediately regretting not putting leads on earlier, and my mind blanks on what medication is used to treat A-fib. The rate is freaking me out, start thinking if I should push Adenosine or put some Amio in the bag and it hits me "oh right, it's Cardizem but we don't carry that." Only a couple minutes from the hospital now but still feel very uneasy about not using any meds. Get to the hospital, give report and transfer care, patient is still presenting the same as we found them. Get back to the station, and digging through the miles of paperwork turns out the patient has a history of paroxysmal A-fib. Showed a much more experienced medic a strip I printed and they told me that without Cardizem, there's nothing else I could've done and I handled the call fine, fluids were the only thing we can do here. Happened right at the end of shift so I plan on reaching out to a supervisor to discuss more, just can't shake the feeling I should have done more. Thoughts?

I quit cold turkey last Thursday. I was on 15 mg and had been on lexapro for about a year and 4 months. I’ve been extremely dizzy, irritable, vivid dreams, and just generally not feeling well/lethargic. Google is scaring me that these symptoms could last months or even years. Are these symptoms going to get better? I cannot be this dizzy every day. I had to take Dramamine today
Also want to add, I know for sure this isn’t my anxiety coming back. These symptoms began almost immediately after stopping and this is never how anxiety manifested for me.

I've been trying to find the right signal type for a long time, I think I've been up to #11 and have only gotten one volume down on #4. If anyone just knows which number is the right one, if any, that'd be great!
But yeah, mainly setting up for Wii Fit U and the Fit Meter, though I forgot I have a lot of good games installed.

He turns 4 this year and we noticed him not being able to urinate today. We timed him and he stayed in the litter box for 4 minutes without any pee and then left and returned a few minutes later and tried again for 2 minutes with no luck. We took him to emergency vet right away and they confirmed he has a block. They are still waiting for blood work and urinalysis results but they told us he had “quite a lot of blood in his urine” which is freaking me out. He’s sedated and they said he’s doing ok but I’m dying inside not knowing how bad his case is. The fact they said not only he had blood in his urine but “quite a bit” is terrifying to me. They said they could release him today after they unblock him but recommended keeping him for 36 hours so we chose that despite the hefty quote of $4000 CAD. Does the amount of blood mean he’s doing badly? What causes the blood in urine?

I have been suspecting that my Spectra S1 has been losing suction slowly for a while now. Plus the battery is definitely not lasting as long as it used to. In the beginning I charged my Spectra every 48-72 hours, now it is more like every 24 hours. The motor sounds awful. Plus I am 4 days into a clog that is draining but not resolving, I suspect due to not fully emptying despite pumping for 40 minutes each pump and clearing the milk bleb.
I had a last minute cancellation at work today, about 1 hour before the spectra help line closes, so I figured I would call about getting a replacement. Except Spectra isn’t taking any calls. Their customer care/warranty line has a message stating “today is Friday May 26th” and they won’t be open for calls until “Tuesday May 30th at 9am” due to the holiday weekend. WTF, it’s the 31st!
So I go online, fill out the warranty form (as directed by the voicemail)…only there is no way to submit the online form. After filling out the required areas, getting my proof of purchase, making a video - nothing and no way to send the form. I am pissed.

Contracted a tree removal guy for a very tricky job. Showed up at dawn on the first day with a 4 person crew and worked like mad. Branches down, everything shredded, and rigging everywhere.
He asked for a 50% deposit, and said they would finish up the next day.
The next morning I got a text. "My climber is fighting with his girl, can't have him up there today. We'll be back on Wednesday.
Okay, whatever. I get it, it's a dangerous job and people need to be focused.
But Wednesday comes and goes. No contact.
Got a text a few minutes ago from the owner. "My climber is still dealing with his girlfriend. I'll try to get there tomorrow with a lift".
Is this acceptable behavior? The tree removal in question, an enormous white pine, is only a few feet from my house. My front yard is currently COVERED in branches, logs, and other detritus from the service guys.
I feel like I'm being strung along. He's got my deposit with the work half finished, and I'm basically held hostage here while he and his team go after other projects.
Just looking for some perspective.

Hello, I hope I’m in the correct place… I have a used Toyota Rav 4 2019 XLE AWD purchased May 2022. (My first car) I had an oil change and tire rotation done late Nov. ‘22. Should I take care of this again now? Synthetic oil. If it matters, I purchased the vehicle at roughly 33k miles, and as of today (5/31/23) am at 38.2k miles. The sticker on my windshield says 45k miles for next oil change, but I honestly don’t know how all of this works. I’m learning, but don’t fully trust google and the dealership for answers. I’ve seen it doesn’t always depend on just the miles, which is why I’m seeking advice. Mostly city driving and a handful of road-trips, if it makes a difference. hey, none of you know me and this is a really random post to make considering i'm an extremely inactive reddit user who doesn't like the site too much, but krr is a website that constantly comes back to me. its a tiny relic in my life that i only frequented for a few years

in 2019, i was into making crappy rpgs. i had this really terrible free rpg maker alternative i used because i had turned 13 about 2 months prior and didn't know about the dirt cheap sales the rpg makers get on steam yet. i wanted to make rpgs about any franchise that i enjoyed enough, the big 3 were mario, puyo puyo, and pokemon. i have no clue why mario was one because i haven't been a massive fan of it since i was about 4, but somewhere down the line i threw in kirby. i experimented w some kirby fan stuff before, a bit before that i made some esgy kirby comment hosted on a blogspot that never went anywhere. but i was dedicated to these rpgs, i had churned out 2 complete ones and one demo. feeling dedicated to this and being an avid lover of forums at that time, i decided to just google kirby forums, and krr was one of the first results.

my username was cosmickirb and, at this point, there were 3 active members not including me. soul-of-marx, keeby64, and joshi. marx and keeby were regular members, joshi was a mod. we all became friends pretty quickly. marx had a lot of the same humor as me, so we goofed off a lot, while keeby was kind of the straight man of the group, and she'd usually post more normal things. i remember a big joke between me and marx in specific was buff gooey, a poorly photoshopped image of gooey ontop of a buff dude, and a bunch of other edits of the same caliber.

eventually 2 more members became active, diggedery (i believe thats how their username was spelled?) and metaknee. dig was another mod that stuck around for a while before falling inactive, but metaknee ended up sticking around, she actually contacted me earlier this month which was nice, even wished me happy birthday since my birthday was soon at that point. we made a thread on the site chicken smoothie to promote krr too since cs is decently active.

the real downdall was definitely 2020. when 2020 rolled around, the forum broke. we couldnt sign in, and if we were signed in, we couldnt post. new users couldnt sign up either. i dont remember if i pmed marx about this first or she pmed me about it first, but the site was unusable until about late 2020. i found out about it coming back a bit late, but it was too late at that point. most of us had moved on, the site was just never as active as it was in 2019.

most of us barely talk now despite how much we talked back then. marx just posts art to deviantart now, ans i couldnt tell you where keeby went. metaknee always pops up every so often, and joshi fell inactive after the 2020 thing happened. i miss the site a lot, the forum is completely down now. but i hope you enjoyed my story of how, in 2019, 3 teenagers came together to try to revive an old kirby forum, and it sort of worked considering how active it was with just our little group.

(also, at some point patmac mentioned the site in a video that had just come out at that point. i was rlly happy about that lol)

To put it extremely simply (and maybe dramatically) its because they dont just make a game, they make a world and then place a game in it. These games are almost like a simple virtual version of Westworld.
Let me explain, most RPGs and open world games are designed around player input, nothing happens when youre not there or without your direct involvement. However, in a BGS game, thats not the case. Here stuff can happen without you being involved at all, or hell, when youre not even there.
This is cause of all the persistance and simulations running in the background. NPCs, at least in TES, are named, have families, jobs, daily routines, and homes they return to at night to sleep. All of this is simulated when youre not around. So much so that if someone gets murdered when youre not even around (rare but it happens sometimes) you will stumble on their corpse the next time you visit that area. Theyre not just background assets that disappear when they turn a corner. They're actual persistant entities with a life, or illusion of a life. Its like how every open world game claims their game is a 'living breathing world' but in BGS's case its actually true.
Then you also have the interactivity with the world. You can pick everything up, move it around, and then theyre also persistant so when you place it somewhere it will generally stay there, unless its in the middle of a town where itll then likely get stolen by an NPC (and you can watch them do it, and even ask for it back). There is no gameplay reason for any of this, that is to say its not a mecahnic that you use as part of the core gameplay loop, its just there. Its there so that you can feel some connection to the world and when you ask the question 'can I pick this up?' The answer is yes, yes you can.
Which bring me to my next point, That question. That design philosophy of answering yes when the player wants to do something doesnt stop there, it applies to a lot of things. Can I talk to this random person? Can I kill this random person? Can I break into this house? Can I rent a room at this tavern? Can I eat this food? Can I wear this? Can I steal this mans clothes? Can I steal the weapon this guard is using? Can I eat Corpses? Can I get arrested? Can I break out of prison? Can I buy a house? Can I get married? Etc etc. All things that, like picking up items, serve no purpose other than to make the world feel almost real. Its as close to playing an actual D&D tabletop game as youre going to get in a video game just in terms of freedom and player agency.
Then you take all these designs and mechanics, and throw them into a massive world with a dozen cities and hundreds of random locations, most of which with no quest attached, where youre free to explore anywhere you want at any time. No arbritrary invisible walls creating paths through the map, no level gated areas guided you through the same areas each playthrough. Youre just dropped in this giant living world and told to have fun.
And a lot of this is to do with the engine. All of the persistance, NPCs, background simulation, interactivity etc is all built into the engine, and its the only engine that has all this stuff. Its also has one of the most efficient content creation pipelines in the industry, which is how they managed to create a game as big as skyrim with only 140 people at a time when AAA studios with 5x as many people were struggling to make open worlds a fraction of the size. I mean in the CK you can build a basic NPC and give him a simple home and daily routine in like 30-60 minutes. Adding things is just so easy and because all the simulation stuff is built into the engine there is very little for you to even do to set it up, you just click a few buttons and like todd said 'it just works'.

I am in a bit of a panic as it has recently become clear to me that I may be in a very disadvantageous tax situation already, and I want to figure out how to resolve it and move forward without encountering these problems in the future. Had I understood things more clearly when I began this investment journey, I may not be in this position, but the details were elusive to me on what qualified as a PFIC and I was only just learning everything as I went. It mainly came down to misleading myself that certain investments were okay because there seemed to be strict policies in place on what I could or could not buy as an American, so I made the wrong (in hindsight) assumption that if Rakuten Securities allowed me to buy into a fund or stock, it would probably be okay.
Currently, my situation is as follows:

1. I am an American, in my mid-thirties, who has lived in Japan for the better part of 13 years.
2. I plan on retiring in Japan. My retirement planning began 3-4 years ago, as I made barely enough money to survive for the bulk of that time living in here.
3. I now own a home here.
4. I am married to a Japanese national, with two children.
5. I came to Japan for my first “real” job and had no investment or retirement accounts open in the US. It now seems more or less impossible to open one back in the US and to be certain it will stay open until I retire, which seems to be one of the major ways Americans maintain a decent investment strategy.
6. There is no one back home who I can ask to use an address of, and I would like to shy away from that particular strategy as it seems to be recommended for short/mid-term stays in Japan and not for permanent/long-term stays.
7. My current brokerage in Japan is Rakuten Securities.
8. I have an iDeCo account (investment type) that is set up through Rakuten via JIS&T that has a bit under 1,000,000 yen so far, with 100% of my current holdings in the account being the 楽天米国INDEX楽天DC fund. (PFIC alert)
9. I have a normal NISA account that has approximately 4,600,000 yen in it that contains investments in three different mutual funds—iShares S&P500, eMAXIS Slim All Countries, and eMAXIS Slim S&P500. (PFIC alert)
10. I hold shares in a company that plans to go public and I expect the proceeds (capital gains) to be worth anywhere from 40-120,000,000 within the next couples years at most. This is a Japanese company that should not qualify as a PFIC.

I have begun reaching out to various financial advisors that specialize in expat situations, specifically looking for those who will work with Americans, but as expected, it seems most will not touch me until I have somewhere around $250,000 in assets, which I am a bit far away from. If the IPO mentioned above goes off without a hitch, I could suddenly find myself worthy of their time, but it is not a guarantee that will all pan out. Honestly, if I were sure it would all work out, it would only serve to make it even more important to have a plan on how to cash out in the least painful way tax-wise, so ideally I would like to get my ducks in a row before it happens.
My current ideas (none of which are ideal, at all) are:

1. Cash out my NISA next year when the new system begins, deal with all of the tax complications then and hopefully never again, and throw all of my money into my wife’s NISA, as she will almost certainly never be able to hit maximum contribution limits on her own account anyways. (I am worried if this is actually legal from a Japanese perspective, as she would end up putting more money into that yearly than her own post-tax salary). From that point on, only invest either through my wife’s accounts or only in non-PFIC Japanese stock. I dislike the idea of having my money being the responsibility, or property, or someone else, regardless of who it is, as I would feel equally uncomfortable in the reverse position.
2. Keep trying to open an account at a broker like Interactive Brokers and do my investing through there. I am worried that I will run into more tax issues in reverse though in retirement when I need to report world-wide earnings in Japan.
3. Continue investing as I am now and hope that, by the time I need to sell and realize my capital gains, tax law has changed to be less punitive for US expats actually living abroad (eg: in the future, individuals who pass the physical presence test do not need to pay taxes on foreign accounts originating from that country vs. individuals holding/hiding money overseas while living in the US.) This is very obviously a risky and overly-optimistic choice, but a thought I had nonetheless. To be clear, this would mean I would comply with the current tax law at that time even if it did not change.
4. Renounce my US citizenship. I would very much like to avoid this, at least until I am older and more certain of what my children plan to do with their lives, but this would eliminate so many headaches from a retirement-planning perspective. Additionally, it seems to me that mathematically it makes a lot more sense to do this sooner while my assets are low than to wait until retirement age and have to pay an insane exit tax.

I guess I would like to know if anyone has been in a similar situation and how they resolved it, or if anyone has any advice? As I said, I am reaching out to financial institutions to try to get advice, but again, I am not a big enough fish to qualify for actual services. This is very frustrating, as it appears to be virtually impossible to plan for retirement while actually following all of the rules properly without taking a massive hit somewhere that I cannot help but feels like a penalty for being an expat (“following the rules” would rule out having a US-brokerage account registered to a family member’s address, for example, as that seems to be technically illegal from what I have read).
I would be happy to hear literally anything, including corrections to some of my assumptions or statements above, along with any advice on either what someone in a similar situation has done or even recommendations on a good place to go to that may actually service me with my relatively low total liquid assets (somewhere around 12,000,000 yen). Sorry for the long post, but I think the specifics of the situation may lead to vastly different advice, so I wanted to include as much as possible.

The backstory:
Benjamin was born differently.
His parents were never sure what it was exactly, But simply put, he would never grow up.
Even then, Cut to when he was 18 years old, He still had the simple mind of an 8 year old.
His parents were arguing endlessly, Over whether or not they should take care of him in their house, Or simply take him to some disabled person's home, where he could be someone else's problem.
His mother wanted to keep him, insisting that they would not understand her son.
His father was not so loving, And did not care about the well being of his offspring, Simply wanting a reason to no longer have to deal with him.
One day, Benjamin decided he had to make his father stop hurting his mother, The way he saw her with his bottle of funny juice, Hitting his mother and calling her a... horse? a horse? Maybe that was what he said, benjamin didn't understand.
So, During one of the rare instances that his father was awake, Benjamin found a really big rock in the back yard and started calling for daddy, And once his dad opened the door and came into the back yard, Benjamin was already upon him.
His dad could hardly even react, before Benjamin knocked his father to the floor, Raised the rock above his head, And started to bash his father's skull in, The old miserable drunkard could do little to fight back, barely even scream due to the way his brain bits were being obliterated.
When his mommy found out, she cried, And told Benjamin that they were going to have pizza, And went to take a nap.
When she went to her room, She took one too many of the skittles she needed to sleep, And never woke up, So benjamin ordered the pizza for her, And ended up eating 2 whole pizzas on his own.
Once that was done, Benjamin curled up with his mother's cold body and fell asleep.
When he woke up, He saw mean people with blue suits trying to take him away, And Benjamin remembered his mother's advice on never talking to strangers, and fought back rabidly.
Many lives were lost that day, And when the town was empty, benjamin saw in the forest, A gentle mist was creeping into the place.
It was a friendly, Nice mist!
It was telling him about a fun place where nobody could hurt him or make fun of him again!
Benjamin ignored any innate sense of fear, and pushed on into the woods, Fading into the fog, And he was never seen again.
