Background:
In the Strangereal World…
The Sarych-class Guided Missile Destroyers \1]) were the brainchild of Yuktobanian Fleet Admiral Khristofor Braginsky \2]) under the purview of naval guns still retaining a role in amphibious landings, as well as a desire to replace earlier gun cruisers and destroyers such as the Varyag-class \3]) in the case of the former and the Skrytny-class \4]) for the latter. This new ship would be developed around the 130mm automatic gun in twin turrets, allowing her to fulfill her role as a support ship for amphibious assaults. As the Osean Maritime Defense Force was developing the Cavalier-class \5]) (and would later co-develop the Chivalry-class \6]) with the Independent State of Ugellas when the Cold War began in 1980 in one of the last cooperative agreements between Osea and a Usean nation until the late 2000’s), the ships would adopt a new air-defense and anti-ship suite, including the SS-N-22 “Sunburn” Anti-Ship Missiles, (which would later be adapted for use by Yuktobanian Su-33 “Flanker-D’s”) and SA-N-7 “Gadfly” Surface-to-Air Missiles.
YNS Chuda was the tenth Sarych-class laid down, when she was laid down on 30 December 1984 originally as YNS Gremyashchy at Okchabursk Shipyard, before being launched under her current name 23 November 1987. She was commissioned into the Yuktobanian Navy on 30 May 1988. Chuda’s early career would be dominated by the general tensions wrought by the Cold War between Yuktobania and the Osean Federation. In this capacity she would serve as a picket and air-defense ship attached to the Admiral Tsanev battlegroup, a role that she would spend the majority of her career in, largely operating in the waters of the Ceres Ocean, patrolling the seas and often times participating in shadowing Osean navy forces in the general area. These operations would be scaled down when Yuktobania declared for Osea and the allied powers in their war with the Belkan Federation in 1995, though no Yuktobanian Navy asset would take part in the Belkan War.
Chuda was among the many warships that would serve as escorts when Admiral Tsanev carried Yuktobanian Prime Minister Feodor Samanov for a symbolic meeting to the Republic of Sotoa for a meeting with Sotoan President Abulhassan Hoseini on 21 April 1996. This would be a part of later plans by both Samanov and his successor as Prime Minister, Sergei Viktorovich “Seryozha” Nikanor in pursuing peaceful relations following the tragic and self-inflicted nuclear strikes by Belka that ended the Belkan War as well as the subsequent end of the Cold War and the news of the impending threat of the Ulysses 1994XF04 Asteroid that was due to impact the Earth in three years’ time. It was in fact due to this knowledge that Chuda, along with many of her sister ships would receive a refit that allowed the ships to simulate a limited AEGIS capability, a feature that would be perfected with the later Admiral Tikhemenev-class Frigates \7]) used by Yuktobania and more infamously, by the Erusean Royal Navy. Chuda’s refit would be completed on 16 February 1998, with the ship being equipped with weapons to defend her battlegroup and Yuktobanian coastline from the threat of asteroid fragments.
These weapons would not be used however on the fateful day, 3 July 1999. Although Yuktobania would see itself subjected to a number of impacts from fragments of the Ulysses asteroid, they were too few, too isolated and far out of range of any of the converted Sarych-class ships to strike Yuktobania. In fact, Yuktobania comparatively suffered minimal damage compared to the devastation wrought upon the Usean Continent and the Socialist Federal Republic of Estovakia on the Anean Continent. The remainder of the year, and over the course of the next decade would see Chuda employed in humanitarian efforts all over the world, in response to the aftermath of Ulysses’ planetfall. She would also escort a number of transports delivering engineers and material in the construction of Basset Space Center in southwestern Osea, with the aim being to outfit their maneuvering space vehicle, the Arkbird with the tools to destroy the remaining fragments of the asteroid.
These operations for Chuda would end in early 2010, when the Admiral Tsanev battlegroup would withdraw back to Tiger Naval Port for exercises and preparations for what would become the start of a war of Osea. Though the war (which would become known as the Circum-Pacific War) would begin on 27 September, Chuda’s involvement in the early weeks were minimal, with the battlegroup remaining at port, in favor of supporting use of YNS Scinfaxi, a submersible aviation cruiser in the opening days of the conflict. The Tsanev battlegroup would largely remaining based at the Tiger Naval Port until news of the sinking of Scinfaxi reached Naval HQ, and the decision was made to move the ship north into the Fuscum Sea, largely away from combat operations, even as the Yuktobanian mainland was itself invaded by Osea on 1 November. The reasons for this move remains a topic of debate to this day, either stemming from a desire to have aircraft from the Admiral Tsanev to provide CAS and CAP operations in various hotspots where the Osean and Yuktobanian Armies were fighting, while others cite the possibility of the Commander of the Admiral Tsanev, Captain Afansy Kostroma to have had Belkan sympathies (with some even believing that he was secretly a Belkan, one of many who infiltrated the Yuktobanian government and military, though that claim has not been substantiated) and wanted to hold back the fleet until such a time to inflict maximum damage to Osean and Yuktobanian forces both. Whatever the case may be, Chuda would remain out of action for much of the conflict, only setting off from Leopard Naval Base on 15 December once Osean advances had been thoroughly stalled along the outskirts of Cinigrad and before reaching the city of Okchabursk.
On 1721 hours on 29 December 2010, The Admiral Tsanev battlegroup encountered a small Osean fleet in the Ceres Ocean. To Kostroma’s luck, the flagship of that fleet was the Hubert-class aircraft carrier OFS Kestrel, a ship that had managed to escape Yuktobanian attacks time and time again. Kostroma would order all ships to battlestations to engage this Osean fleet. It was then a most unexpected moment would occur that would change everything. Seryozha Nikanor, the Prime Minister of Yuktobania was aboard the Kestrel and implored his countrymen to cease this conflict for the sake of saving Yuktobania. These words fell on deaf ears for many of the ships, with Captain Kostroma even labeling Nikanor a traitor for having aligned himself with the Oseans. Many of the ships, but not all, as the captain of one of the ships in the battlegroup, the Burevestnik-class Guided Missile Frigate Pitomik would protest this order, citing his loyalty to the Prime Minister, Kostroma would respond by ordering his “loyal” ships to sink the Pitomik, hitting the ship with four shells, including a fatal hit to the bridge, killing its Captain, Mikhail Sablin and sinking the ship in 1722 hrs. This callous act, would compel the captain of another Sarych-class Destroyer, Gumrak, Aleksandr Ramius to defect to the Kestrel Fleet. Chuda’s captain, Konstantin Petrov, would join the Gumrak in the defection, alongside another Sarych-class, Dub. The three ships would elude Yuktobanian gun and missile fire along with aircraft from the Tsanev as it sought to close the distance and join the newly established Kestrel Fleet. This task would prove easier with the support of Kestrel’s airgroup, the Razgriz Air Command Squadron, which fought hard to defend the Kestrel’s fleet as well as the defecting Yuktobanian ships, while supporting efforts to rescue crew members from both the attacking Yuktobanian fleet as well as from Osea’s Barbet battlegroup that also attacked the Kestrel. In the end, the Kestrel fleet would survive the battle mostly unscathed. Chuda would later take part in the sinking of an Osean November City-class submarine, OFS Sudentor the following day, after the latter successfully struck the Kestrel with two Harpoon Anti-Ship Missiles, sinking the venerated carrier.
Upon the cessation of hostilities on 31 December 2010, Chuda, alongside Gumrak and Dub would return to Tiger Naval Port for repairs and refits, and would spend much of the following year escorting Osean ships as they brought Army and Air Force units back home to Osea. Chuda would be decommissioned on 23 April 2016, and would be sold for scrap the following year.

As a guided missile destroyer, Chuda sports good firepower, higher than conventional destroyers (B), and a well off torpedo stat (A) and decent anti-aircraft stat (B), due to her OTL class role of an anti-ship and anti-air platform during the late-era Cold War. Her HP pool, reflecting Destroyers of that era, is largely comparable to Light Cruisers (B). Chuda’s speed is also fairly decent (B).

Chuda is a person who is cool as a cucumber and one who is often always close to Gumrak, often being led into trouble but is calm enough to know how to get her and her friends out. She’s teasing at times, often to her Osean counterparts, but she’s caring enough to aid those who need it.

Chuda is depicted as a girl in her late-teens with medium-back length snow white hair with a long braid at the side coming down to the front of her shoulder and ruby red eyes. Her attire is a white button-up coat with a red ascot that has yellow trim and a pin on her right chest that sports the Yuktobanian deer that serves as its national animal. A white skirt with blue trim at the base, white stockings and black shoes with grey at the base round out her attire. In addition, Chuda wears a pair of sunglasses on her face.
Chuda’s rigging is fairly straightforward, consisting of a split in the bow on each side of her body, and two plates of side armor serving as makeshift pauldrons, each of which carry a pair of quad missile launchers that carry the SS-N-22 “Sunburn” Anti-Ship Missiles. In her hands is a single twin turret AK-130 which she uses as a makeshift pistol. Her superstructure serves as a backpack of sorts, with her helipad in the back of it.

My second Ace Combat 5 ship that featured exclusively in Mission 26 ladies and gentlemen, and in this case I've already made my thoughts known on that particular mission with Character Concept #96: OFS Barbet, as well as my thoughts on the game itself, so I'm not going to go into details here. But it is my first Ace Combat concept involving a Yuktobanian warship, aka what happens when Russia wasn't united by the Grand Duchy of Moscow but instead, united under the Principality of Nizhny Novgorod (and I'm not kidding, the reindeer emblem used by Yuktobania, while actually a reference to a car company from the titular city, also happens to be the coat of arms for said titular city). All in all, an interesting concept, and also by extension the first Russian design I made into a shipgirl in two years.
Last time, when I did PSS Wasp, I've announced that I was going to remake the concepts of Year 1 to post into AO3. Well I'm pleased to announce that the first of these has now been posted to that website, my first concept, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, which I will link here. All in all, an interesting concept, and also by extension the first Russian design I made into a shipgirl in two years.
Last time, when I did PSS Wasp, I've announced that I was going to remake the concepts of Year 1 to post into AO3. Well I'm pleased to announce that the first of these has now been posted to that website, my first concept, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, which I will link here. I won't be announcing these on Reddit on a regular basis as I want to focus on continue the upcoming concepts, but if you are interested, those updated CC's will be found on my list of ships, as well as the original Google Docs that I used to write these up for posting.

Next time we will beginning the next theming operation, Codename: Weissenburg after the battle in the Franco-Prussian War. This theme will showcase the German battlecruiser line from World of Warships. Starting off we will be taking a look at Tier III German Battlecruiser, and Germany's first ever battlecruiser, the Bavarian Knight herself, SMS Von der Tann.

She lived with her sister, mother and father, and it wasn’t exactly an easy life; they had to restrain themselves in a lot of ways, and they didn’t get along most of the time either. When a girl turned 9 years old, however, her father gave her a birthday present. A cat of the breed “Norwegian Forest”, or so he was told; way later we’ve found out that it was a low-key scam, and in fact the cat was most likely a Nebelung. The girl somehow knew how he would turn out and named him Boss. And Boss he was; from his young age he decided he’d live to be a pain in the ass. He would literally hunt the girl, waiting for her to come around the corner to attack her legs with all might of his sharp claws, leaving bloody scratches. He despised water bowls, instead insisting to drink from the sink. He would lay where he wanted and do what he wanted. But he had a boss of his own; that’s what Nebelungs do - they pick one person to be their sole master. And that was the girl’s mother. He respected her; she was the one who taught him not to dig the litter because it was messy, she was the one he followed around all the time. He would listen, even if there was no love. Ten years passed. They got another cat and we got two, but living in different towns, we’ve known little of Boss’ further fate. About four years later, when we came to visit, I was sitting at the kitchen table and Boss came to me. He was not what I’d known him to be. His fur was messy, as if it’s never seen a brush; he was tired, sad and beaten. As we learned later, he was mistreated; they would lock him in the kitchen for the night, without access to the toilet, he would go in the corner and then would get shouted at for it. He sat next to me as if seeking anything resembling warmth and comfort; I pet him, and I remember thinking that perhaps he didn’t have much more time in this world. About six months later, when I was at work, my wife called me in tears. As her sister had two little kids now, the family decided they couldn’t care for two cats and two kids at the same time. The younger cat was given away, but nobody wanted the older Boss. So they presented us a choice: either we take him, or they put him down. It goes without saying what choice we made; her father was even so kind as to drive 800km (~500mi) just to transfer Boss to us. So from now on, it was the five of us: me, my wife, two cats, and Boss. I vividly remember what was the first thing Boss did, when he ended up in our apartment: laid down right in the middle of the kitchen, which was overcrowded with guests so everyone had to step over or walk around. The other cats tried to sniff him but he was out of fucks to give. He was the Boss, and he was about to show that in any way he could. One of the first nights, he decides he wants to sleep in bed with us. He laid on top of my arm, but at some point he didn’t like some of the movements I did, grabbed my arm with all four paws and proceeded to chew on it. Half-asleep, I sent him flying to the floor and started slapping, sometimes hitting the floor instead; without intention to hurt, but to teach a lesson, I guess. Half-asleep, like I said. Next morning, I noticed that my finger went red and swollen; I went to the injury center and they diagnosed me with a broken finger. It was the first broken bone I ever received, and Boss was the one to give it to me. It was the last time I would slap him, and it was the last time Boss attacked me like that. That’s what Nebelungs do: they choose one person to be their sole master, and that night he had chosen me. He was about fifteen years old when we took him. We started feeding him right, brushing his fur (although he hated it). We’ve treated an infection he had on his chin. We would take him to the vet for routine check-ups. And guess what? In no time, he was alive again. The doctor would awe in surprise every time how well he held up for his age. Blood tests would come back within norm every single time. So we lived together, the five of us. Boss was with me, all the time. He would come to sit on my lap when lap was available, he would sit beside me when we were eating. When I was working, he would come to sit in front of the PC, or just reside on my lap once again. He was watching movies with us. Before bed, he would make a point to lay on my shoulder for at least a few minutes, purring, or rather grumbling, straight into my ear. Then he would proceed to lay on my side, or along the legs, as long as it was with us on the bed, every single night. He was indeed a changed cat, but his core features remained. He was never aggressive to the other cats, but he wouldn’t take no shit either, fighting when he needed to. He would often sit on a windowsill, gazing through a window, and he still loved to drink from the sink. Although it was more difficult for him to hop on, I would often give him a lift - why not indulge the old man a little? Once we bought him a toy - almost accidentally; it was nothing but a simple wool ball, but yet he loved it deeply! He would carry it around him, sleep with it, and often could’ve been seen “hunting”: carrying it around in his teeth, making furious noises at the same time. We believed it was his Nebelung enchantment to regain vitality. We moved several times. Of all the cats, Boss handled the travel in the most badass fashion; he was the only one safe to be in a car without a box. He would never obstruct, or need to go to the toilet - he would just take the travel lightly. One time we traveled by car to the small mountain village. And sure enough, not only Boss traveled with us; he took the 36 hour trip better than any of us humans. He would sometimes trip on a flat surface, or fall while trying to hop on a bed. We were worried tremendously. The doctor said he probably had a stroke. She prescribed him a wide assortment of pills as a health support measure, and I didn’t take it lightly. I’ve assembled the whole “Boss pills” spreadsheet and automated it, so I would receive notifications every day about which pills he needed to have. He obviously hated the pills, sometimes taking offense and sitting alone for a whopping several hours straight; I didn’t give a damn - my job was to give him the best life possible, even if it would sometimes seem uncomfortable to him. At 20, when the tripping intensified, the doctor said he was still doing relatively fine, but he probably had around one year left. I don’t cry often, but that day I did. We had long-going plans to move to Cyprus, and I wanted so much to show him the sea, but I didn’t know if he’d hold on for that long. Several months later was February ‘22, and you know what happened. Our long-going plans had to shorten. We had to flee immediately. We quickly sold most of what we had, I bought pills for at least 1.5 years for Boss, we packed the three cats into two bags and took a flight to Armenia. We worried how Boss would take it, but we shouldn't have; he took it like a boss. Our other cat would sit on a window, but when the ginger came to the other side to stare him down, our cat would whine and cry. One day we decided to introduce him to Boss. They would stare at each other through the fly screen door quietly for quite some time, and guess who would crawl away crying? Not Boss. His deadpan stare could melt glass. It was an especially tiresome trip that took the entire weekend. Still, Boss was fine. Tired, but not beaten. His pupils were crazy wide, he couldn’t see a thing, he was scared. The pills helped, he recovered, but that’s when he became picky about food; sometimes we would convince him to eat for good 15 minutes until he fashioned a few bites. He was losing weight quickly. The doctor said his kidneys were in a really bad shape; then there were new pills which made the situation somewhat better, but still, he never gained weight again. In December I suddenly fell really ill. I came home delirious, with a fever and a sore throat. We decided that I should sleep in a separate room until I came to, and somehow Boss knew it, as he waited on my bed. The first night was the heaviest. The fever sucked all strength out of me, I was shaking violently. Yet Boss was there to give me warmth I so desperately needed. It took me a whole month to cough my way to get better, and Boss was there for me every single night. In January my wife calls me in tears once again. Boss had another stroke, he convulsed badly and even fell from bed. I took him to a hospital immediately. His blood was really bad. The kidneys gave up. Yet he was walking around the hospital room, sniffing every corner. The doctor said he needed fluids, so we left him there to get some. That night, when I took him home after fluids, he couldn’t stand up. With every day on fluids he got worse. Each night we would put him into his make-shift house near our bed, and I would check on him every 30 minutes. For me, every passing hour was another hour when he was alive, not more, not less. But it surely was going nowhere, so at some point, I decided to stop the fluids. I took him home for one last day. He couldn’t get up still, but he could give out silent sounds when he wanted to eat or drink, and even tried with all his strength to get up when he needed to go to the toilet. I cared for him the whole day. In the evening we sat to watch “Ted Lasso” and put Boss right in his house beside us, so he would watch too. It was a peaceful evening. After another endless night, we brought Boss to the doctor one last time. I turned random peaceful music on; it was surprisingly on the spot, I especially remember “Heartbeats” by José González and “Angel Mine” by Cowboy Junkies. Barely able to lift his head, he mustered his last strength to try and bite the doctor while he was putting a needle into him. It wouldn’t be Boss without it. He kept up the fight until his last moments. He was the Nebelung. We looked each other straight in the eye while life was leaving his body, and then he was gone. He passed away about 18 months after the vet gave him a year tops - because he had to shove even that in our faces. We buried him in a pet cemetery. He’s got his own tombstone with his picture on it (it will become prettier when they’ll put decorative pebbles on it), and his wool ball hangs on a memory tree next to his grave. We should’ve taken him from her parents when moving in. I should’ve put him on fluids sooner. I should’ve stopped the fluids on day 1, when I realized those were no good for him. Ever since he died, I’ve been drowning in regrets, guilt, “whatif’s” and “should’ves”. Shortly before his passing, he was there for me when I needed him most, and I couldn’t save him in return. Never in my life have I cried as much as in these weeks. I’ve had other animals in my life. I buried them. People, too. Damn, I still have two cats. Yet, I don’t have this level of bonding with any of them; and no other loss felt quite like this one. Because that night, Boss had chosen me as his master. And I couldn’t have been luckier to have a Boss like him. |

It took hours. Allah realized the sun was walking away when they finally stepped out of the great quorum hall. Ada’key’hamda and Allah’hem’nrah walked to either side of Li, a group of elders and tradesmen flocking behind. They carried charcoal and papers, hastily drawn maps and long scrolls of lists--names of the future displaced, materials to be salvaged, and more workers than she could count--as they jostled to be heard over each other.
Allah glanced over her shoulder as the wide double doors began to close, ears twitching frustratingly at Marn’charlie’weh who stood on the dais still, amber eyes glowing with barely contained fury. She had been the most vocal of the group surrounding her now, the Detractors Allah called them in her mind. Most of their arguments had been weighed and addressed--even bringing forth solutions to unforeseen problems as the idea of extending the roads had progressed from Li’s ultimatum into cooperative planning.
Both sides had compromised. The southern Smithhall and much more of the buildings between the outpost and the outer wall would be torn down. The proposed road to the north would be almost doubled in width too, to accommodate the increase in traffic. More importantly, to Allah’s way of thinking, were the inclusion of U’knock work crews into Li’s plan. Her people would oversee the construction of the roads and tearing down the city’s outer wall to make rapidly usable materials.
It had been that last point that nearly set Allah’hem’nrah and Marn’charlie’weh to blows. This had only been the second quorum she had been honored to sit in, neither of them as a member, but the vociferousness and vitriol that passed from mouth to ear had startled her.
“You claim a need to protect our people!” Allah could still remember Marn’charlie’weh shout. It had woken her from her dozing. “And with the other paw you rip down the very walls that shelter us! Holes in the inner ring? Dismantling the outer? Will you take all of our warrior caste with you to fight the bullies too? If they are bullies!”
Li had risen from the floor to confront the black elder, Marn’charlie’weh almost twice the height of the human even then, but a spotted paw thrust between them and Allah’hem’nrah walked to block her.
“I will not be shamed,” she roared, the only time the stalwart pride mother raised her voice, “by this council as to cower and hide while a cub fights for our lives!”
She had pointed to Allah who, at the time, was shamelessly curled up on a cushion. The cub, roused from her dozing, sat up, licked a forepaw and made a show of grooming her fur. It was not Allah’s fault she had fallen asleep; they would not stop talking! On and on they went, arguing over the most minute details only to circle back on a once settled matter and point out how doing one thing would somehow upset two others. Even when it did not. Especially when it did not!
“The warriors will fight in this war!” and the proclamation from Allah’hem’nrah had elicited a scattered cheer from half the quorum.
Li had spent much of the quorum kneeling on a Nameday cushion--anything larger than the small pad used to carry kits to the quorum when they opened their eyes would have swallowed her--sipping water from a clay cup and only put in suggestions when directly asked. Which became less and less frequent as the day dragged on toward night. Allah only realized how long they had been there when Jung reminded her to take her pill!
“I think,” Li had said, rising from her cushion and stretching, “we’ve settled what we can in one day.” Allah rose to follow, eager to be away from these screaming, argumentative adults. “If you have something of substance to add, I’ll be outside the south gate at sunrise,” and the last of her words had a hint of warning, “about an hour before the first tank is scheduled to roll out.”
With that, Li rose, bowed to the throne dais, and strode purposely from the great hall.
And now they walked, not as unwelcomed outlanders who should be chased off, but as people of importance whose presence was harkened by quorum members begging attention.
Or, at the least, Li did. Allah found herself carefully shuffled further and further away from her friend, carefully avoiding elders who jostled past her and ever more dangerously close to the taser belt’s kiss. They did not seem to care, even knowing what the belt could do after Li explained its workings and Guard Captain Fen’ja--belatedly arrived, washed and no longer twitching--had confirmed.
Perhaps, Allah considered, another demonstration was in order. Let one brush up against her? And through a wall? She set such petty thoughts aside. These people were preparing as if for a great storm coming to the land. Shoring up the city for a blizzard named Li.
And the bully horde that followed.
Allah contented herself with being persistently pushed back. If she could contribute, she would try. What she was asked, she would answer. And she would not fault Li. Her friend had been as good as her word and as they stepped outside the cub saw a scribe carrying a stack of posters in her paws, could hear a crier chant “Fey’arna of Hada’neha is requested and required to make his presence known to the nearest city guard. A reward is offered for his safe return.” Surely her father would be found soon, news of him at the least and Allah would go to him.
But for now, Allah had made a promise to Li. She would stand beside her friend…if these quorum members ever got out of the way…
Allah busied her eyes and ears in learning this new place. The smell was only U’knock, a packed down scent of many bodies forced together. It reminded her of the mob. Even as the sun was setting behind the tall buildings the street was alive. Tradeswomen and males carried their goods, families shopped at stalls and cubs ran in play or just from the joy of slipping a father’s leash for a time. The buildings were all taller than any hut, packed into squares and high roofed rectangles. Only the doors and the largest structures were domed. Even the glass in the new windows had straight, with sharp unnatural edges.
That was the word Umati’clam conjured to her: unnatural. Even with so many--because there were so many--of her people packed within, Allah felt more and more like a stranger in these confines. How long had she dreamed of walking the fabled city streets? Now she would give up her tail to curl up on her cushion in front of the fireplace, claw the rough burlap and kneed the straw inside to lay her head down and rest. To be home and safe again.
With her fa.
She was not expecting guards when they reached the wall. Four of the metal humans stepped outside the bubble as it popped, speaking in Demeter’s voice.
“Stand away from the entrance,” they said as one, raising black bowless Com’cha with those deadly tubes in their place. “This is your only warning.”
“I’ll do what I can,” Li said by way of apology as the throng of quorum members receded slowly from the opening wall, “but our timetable is going to be tight. Remember Allah’hem’nrah,” she continued, motioning Allah to step forward, “I want at least two level headed warriors per village. These people are not beggars or simply displaced. And they may be vital to rebuilding your home.”
“I do not see how,” the spotted warrior stepped back as Allah stepped closer, “but we will do as you command, Defender.”
“Uh uh,” Li admonished, wagging a finger at the massive U’knock.
“Li,” Allah’hem’nrah corrected, her lips tightening.
Li gestured to Allah again and the two stepped through.
“Could not your ambassador,” Ada’key’hamda called but did not step past the robot guards, gray fur bristling as the first night wind chilled her, “stay with us longer, Friend Li? We still have questions she might be uniquely capable of answering.”
Li and Allah both turned back, the human grinning with a light bow. “That holds true for me too,” the human said softly. “Unfortunately, Allah’s duties at the moment will be keeping her close to me. Any questions can be relayed through these droids,” she gestured to the armed machines. “They can relay any pertinent queries to Jung or myself through Demeter.”
The wall began to seal itself and Allah’hem’nrah raised one paw in the air, waving it back and forth. “Gud B’eye!” the spotted warrior called.
“Bài bài,” Li wiggled her fingers and the massive U’knock chuffed. As the hole in the wall sealed, the sounds of the city silenced. Allah looked up to see the bubble shimmer in place.
Li slumped her shoulders, stretched and yawned. “Now that’s over with,” she said tiredly, “you want something to eat?”
“I am honored to share your table again,” Allah nodded a bow of thanks as Li turned toward the spire, “but what ‘other’ duties do I have?”
“Mostly?” Li winked as she glanced over her shoulder, “Staying clear of Ada’key’hamda. And Marn’charlie’weh, for that matter.” The human frowned at the blank expression on Allah’s face. “Don’t get me wrong, I like that old gray ‘māo’,” Jung translated the word as a subspecies of Earth native animals with an image that explained much of Li’s previous jibes, “but I don’t trust her any further than I can throw her. Or Allah’hem’nrah if it comes to it. Not fully.”
“Why not?” Allah turned back to the closed wall gate. The pair had quickly become the most vocal supporters of Li’s side during the quorum. “They seemed to trust you.”
“Allah’hem’nrah does,” Li confessed, “or at least she believes me a ‘defender’ and understands the threat the swarmers pose. Sounds like she was breastfed war stories as a kit,” Li scratched her head, combing her hair with her fingers, “but she’s gonna do what she thinks is best for her people. And that might not be what's best for the U’knock. Or winning this war.”
Allah considered this. She wanted to say an honored elder would not be so dishonest but…Ana’nut’hana’s betrayal of her father…their exile reminded the cub that no matter how unified the U’knock love of Defenders and hate for bullies was supposed to be, a shallow cup could not hold deep water. If her own mayor could do such to her and Fey’arna then what were strangers capable of?
“And Ada’key’hamda?” she asked with interest. They had passed the landing pad and rapidly closed on the doors to the spire.
“That woman?” Li grinned lopsidedly as the double doors whooshed open, “is what my people call a ‘kingmaker’,” she waved away Allah’s questions, “it means she is a pure blood politician; shrewd and devious. She only sided with us because she knew where the winds were blowing.”
“I hope,” Allah confided, stepping into the noisy chaos of the garage, “that you are wrong.” Her voice rose to a shout above the hissing, clanging commotion.
“I hope I’m not!” Li answered as they hurried past the noisy room and into the hallway. Once the noise of work had died to a dull den she explained. “We’re going to need somebody that conniving on our side to keep Marn’charlie’weh in check. Um…at bay.”
“Jung explained chess,” Allah answered the unspoken question. “And go.”
“Gooood!” Li’s smile must have been more predatory than intended, Allah assumed, as the human showed her teeth. “I’ve got a board in my quarters aboard the Stardancer. Fancy a game when he gets back?”
“I would rather know,” Allah nodded at the offer, “why you need two warriors to travel to the villages.”
“Ah,” Li turned at a crossroads in the hallway, then looked up “Demeter, where’s the nearest mess hall?”
The pleasant voice had returned as a blue beam illuminated. “Please follow the indicated footpath!” Li quickly strode onward.
“Is there any food available for carbon based consumption?”
There was no response as Li and Allah followed the glowing blue line. “Demeter, is there any food available for carbon based consumption?”
“Stores are restocked from the garden every fifty years, cooked and freeze dried for long term access! We have a selection of prepackaged meals ready to eat! Just add hot water and--”
“Demeter,” Allah interrupted as they entered a large room filled with long beaches and tables, “Please be quiet.” Then, to Li she said “You are avoiding my question.”
“I wasn’t avoiding,” Li said in a scolding tone, “I was stalling. There’s a difference. Demeter? Where’s the food!?!”
“Li,” Allah’s tone was stern and pleading at the same time, “Why?”
The human stopped in the center of the room, shoulders slumping. “I kinda wished you’d’ve been awake for that part. It didn’t go over too well with the quorum either.”
“Stop stalling,” Allah admonished, “What is wrong?”
“Allah,” Li stood in the center of the room, raised and then lowered her hands. “Allah,“ she said, “I need you to prepare yourself. What happened last night was only the opening salvo. Things are going to get worse. A lot worse before we’re done here.”
“The U’knock are accustomed to hardship,” Allah straightened. “We will persevere.“
Li shook her head. “That’s not what I meant. I know your people are strong. I know they’re proud, and I believe they will fight for their home. But are they willing to leave their lives behind to do it?”
“Leave?” Allah pursed her lips and thought. “Why would we need to leave their lives?“
“We don’t have a full planetary shield around this rock,” Li answered. “The safest place for them is going to be in Umati’clam. They’ll have to relocate. All of the villages will have to relocate.
“And,” from the expression on the human’s face, the news she gave was worse than it sounded when she said “Some of them might not make it.”

It took hours. Allah realized the sun was walking away when they finally stepped out of the great quorum hall. Ada’key’hamda and Allah’hem’nrah walked to either side of Li, a group of elders and tradesmen flocking behind. They carried charcoal and papers, hastily drawn maps and long scrolls of lists--names of the future displaced, materials to be salvaged, and more workers than she could count--as they jostled to be heard over each other.
Allah glanced over her shoulder as the wide double doors began to close, ears twitching frustratingly at Marn’charlie’weh who stood on the dais still, amber eyes glowing with barely contained fury. She had been the most vocal of the group surrounding her now, the Detractors Allah called them in her mind. Most of their arguments had been weighed and addressed--even bringing forth solutions to unforeseen problems as the idea of extending the roads had progressed from Li’s ultimatum into cooperative planning.
Both sides had compromised. The southern Smithhall and much more of the buildings between the outpost and the outer wall would be torn down. The proposed road to the north would be almost doubled in width too, to accommodate the increase in traffic. More importantly, to Allah’s way of thinking, were the inclusion of U’knock work crews into Li’s plan. Her people would oversee the construction of the roads and tearing down the city’s outer wall to make rapidly usable materials.
It had been that last point that nearly set Allah’hem’nrah and Marn’charlie’weh to blows. This had only been the second quorum she had been honored to sit in, neither of them as a member, but the vociferousness and vitriol that passed from mouth to ear had startled her.
“You claim a need to protect our people!” Allah could still remember Marn’charlie’weh shout. It had woken her from her dozing. “And with the other paw you rip down the very walls that shelter us! Holes in the inner ring? Dismantling the outer? Will you take all of our warrior caste with you to fight the bullies too? If they are bullies!”
Li had risen from the floor to confront the black elder, Marn’charlie’weh almost twice the height of the human even then, but a spotted paw thrust between them and Allah’hem’nrah walked to block her.
“I will not be shamed,” she roared, the only time the stalwart pride mother raised her voice, “by this council as to cower and hide while a cub fights for our lives!”
She had pointed to Allah who, at the time, was shamelessly curled up on a cushion. The cub, roused from her dozing, sat up, licked a forepaw and made a show of grooming her fur. It was not Allah’s fault she had fallen asleep; they would not stop talking! On and on they went, arguing over the most minute details only to circle back on a once settled matter and point out how doing one thing would somehow upset two others. Even when it did not. Especially when it did not!
“The warriors will fight in this war!” and the proclamation from Allah’hem’nrah had elicited a scattered cheer from half the quorum.
Li had spent much of the quorum kneeling on a Nameday cushion--anything larger than the small pad used to carry kits to the quorum when they opened their eyes would have swallowed her--sipping water from a clay cup and only put in suggestions when directly asked. Which became less and less frequent as the day dragged on toward night. Allah only realized how long they had been there when Jung reminded her to take her pill!
“I think,” Li had said, rising from her cushion and stretching, “we’ve settled what we can in one day.” Allah rose to follow, eager to be away from these screaming, argumentative adults. “If you have something of substance to add, I’ll be outside the south gate at sunrise,” and the last of her words had a hint of warning, “about an hour before the first tank is scheduled to roll out.”
With that, Li rose, bowed to the throne dais, and strode purposely from the great hall.
And now they walked, not as unwelcomed outlanders who should be chased off, but as people of importance whose presence was harkened by quorum members begging attention.
Or, at the least, Li did. Allah found herself carefully shuffled further and further away from her friend, carefully avoiding elders who jostled past her and ever more dangerously close to the taser belt’s kiss. They did not seem to care, even knowing what the belt could do after Li explained its workings and Guard Captain Fen’ja--belatedly arrived, washed and no longer twitching--had confirmed.
Perhaps, Allah considered, another demonstration was in order. Let one brush up against her? And through a wall? She set such petty thoughts aside. These people were preparing as if for a great storm coming to the land. Shoring up the city for a blizzard named Li.
And the bully horde that followed.
Allah contented herself with being persistently pushed back. If she could contribute, she would try. What she was asked, she would answer. And she would not fault Li. Her friend had been as good as her word and as they stepped outside the cub saw a scribe carrying a stack of posters in her paws, could hear a crier chant “Fey’arna of Hada’neha is requested and required to make his presence known to the nearest city guard. A reward is offered for his safe return.” Surely her father would be found soon, news of him at the least and Allah would go to him.
But for now, Allah had made a promise to Li. She would stand beside her friend…if these quorum members ever got out of the way…
Allah busied her eyes and ears in learning this new place. The smell was only U’knock, a packed down scent of many bodies forced together. It reminded her of the mob. Even as the sun was setting behind the tall buildings the street was alive. Tradeswomen and males carried their goods, families shopped at stalls and cubs ran in play or just from the joy of slipping a father’s leash for a time. The buildings were all taller than any hut, packed into squares and high roofed rectangles. Only the doors and the largest structures were domed. Even the glass in the new windows had straight, with sharp unnatural edges.
That was the word Umati’clam conjured to her: unnatural. Even with so many--because there were so many--of her people packed within, Allah felt more and more like a stranger in these confines. How long had she dreamed of walking the fabled city streets? Now she would give up her tail to curl up on her cushion in front of the fireplace, claw the rough burlap and kneed the straw inside to lay her head down and rest. To be home and safe again.

She was not expecting guards when they reached the wall. Four of the metal humans stepped outside the bubble as it popped, speaking in Demeter’s voice.
“Stand away from the entrance,” they said as one, raising black bowless Com’cha with those deadly tubes in their place. “This is your only warning.”
“I’ll do what I can,” Li said by way of apology as the throng of quorum members receded slowly from the opening wall, “but our timetable is going to be tight. Remember Allah’hem’nrah,” she continued, motioning Allah to step forward, “I want at least two level headed warriors per village. These people are not beggars or simply displaced. And they may be vital to rebuilding your home.”
“I do not see how,” the spotted warrior stepped back as Allah stepped closer, “but we will do as you command, Defender.”
“Uh uh,” Li admonished, wagging a finger at the massive U’knock.
“Li,” Allah’hem’nrah corrected, her lips tightening.

Hey there folks. Just your average Midwestern guy who’s looking for friends. You can call me Terry. Hopefully my post is a bit of an eye-catcher. Now that the basics are out the way,here’s where I try to sell myself to you all as a fantastic person lol
Here’s some things about me:
I’m a bit on the tan side but I’m African American Long float dreadlocks that past my waist. I’ve had them for 10 years at this point. I’m told that my laugh is pretty goofy but contagious. I’m the friend that tells funny jokes but also can barely get the joke out because I can’t stop laughing. I’m also the friend with the laugh that’s funnier than the joke lol
I’m a CanceINFJ-T if you're into that sort of thing. If I’m being honest,I’m introverted and can sometimes be a bit shy, but it’s hard to get me to shut up when I warm up to someone. I’ll nerd out and all lol I do suffer from anxiety but it’s a lot better than it used to be. If I were to describe some of my biggest traits,I’d say that I’m pretty caring and compassionate. I’m also really goofy and dorky. My Hogwarts House is Gryffindor.
I’m pretty versatile and my taste/hobbies vary. I enjoy gaming and play pretty much everything. My main platform is PS5 but I recently built my first gaming pc, and I slowly but surely want to move towards that being my main platform. I also have a Xbox Series S. All I need is a Switch and I’d literally be able game without anyone no matter the platform lol
I also stream on twitch sometimes and I’ve been told that my streams are pretty funny
I’m an artsy fart, I enjoy writing and poetry, and just playing with words in general
I also like drawing and am self taught. I took a VERY long hiatus but I’ve been pretty motivated to get back into the grind lol I even would like to try my hand at digital artwork

I’m the friend that tells funny jokes but also can barely get the joke out because I can’t stop laughing. I’m also the friend with the laugh that’s funnier than the joke lol
I’m a CanceINFJ-T if you're into that sort of thing. If I’m being honest,I’m introverted and can sometimes be a bit shy, but it’s hard to get me to shut up when I warm up to someone. I’ll nerd out and all lol I do suffer from anxiety but it’s a lot better than it used to be. If I were to describe some of my biggest traits,I’d say that I’m pretty caring and compassionate. I’m also really goofy and dorky. My Hogwarts House is Gryffindor.
