2023.06.01 01:29 Parking_File_9583 Need color advice. My brain is breaking lol

I purchased this home near the lake in Feb. end goal is a rental (short term or long term tbd). I despise red personally, so I’m having a really hard time picturing wall/trim color here. The roof is just over 1 yr old though and I can’t justify replacing it and painting isn’t really recommended from what roofers have told me. Much work left to be done but plan on railings and staining the decks possibly a walnut tone. Doors also need replacing so that’s up for change as well. I considered building wooden shutters but my window guy will be adding trim with the new window install as well. Shutters and skirting I may paint/change out as well. So all advice is welcome šŸ™šŸ»

2023.06.01 00:56 JoshAsdvgi THE FEAST OF THE WHIRLWINDS

THE FEAST OF THE WHIRLWINDS

THE FEAST OF THE WHIRLWINDS
DZOGƉOn and his uncle lived together in the woods.
When the boy was old enough, his uncle taught him how to shoot and took him out hunting.
One day, while the young man was following an elk, a woman called to him,
"Come here and rest; you are tired."
At first he paid no heed to the woman's words, but, when she called the third time, he sat down at her side.
She talked to him and soon had his head on her lap.
She began to search in his hair and right away he was asleep.
When the woman was satisfied that the young man slept soundly, she put him in a basket, put the basket on her back and started off with great swiftness.
She traveled till sunset, then she stopped, put down the basket, roused the young man, and asked, "Do you know this place?"
"I know it," said he, "My uncle and I used to hunt here."
They spent the night there.
The next morning the woman searched in DZOGƉOn's hair till he fell asleep, then she put him in the basket and hurried on.
Late in the afternoon she stopped near a lake, put the basket down, shook the young man and asked, "Do you know this lake?"
"I know it, I have been here with my uncle."
The woman took out of her basket a canoe no larger than a walnut, struck it till it became large, then both sat in it and the woman paddled across the lake.
"We will go home now," said she, "I have a mother and I have three sisters married and living in my mother's cabin."
The two traveled on till they came to the cabin.
When they stood at the door and the mother saw a stranger with her daughter she called out, "Welcome, Son-in-law, I am glad you have come."
DZOGƉOn became the young woman's husband and they lived on happily till one night the old woman had a dream.
She rolled on to the floor and to the edge of the fire.
Her son-in-law jumped up and asked, "What is the matter, Mother-in-law?
Are you dreaming?"
She didn't answer, but rolled around muttering to herself, then he said, "I'll make her talk," and taking a corn pounder he hit her a blow on the head.
She stood up then, and said, "Oh, I've had a bad dream, I dreamed that my son-in-law killed NYAGWAIHE."
"I'll do that in the morning," said the young man, "but go to sleep now."
The next morning DZOGƉOn killed the bear, without much trouble, and carried it home.
That night the old woman dreamed that her son-in-law must make a feast for the DAGWANOEnYENTS (Whirlwinds), invite them to it, and provide so much food that they couldn't eat it all.
The next day DZOGƉOn killed a great many elks, deer and bears.
There was an abundance of meat; the house was full of it, and still there was more.
Then the young man went out and called to the Whirlwinds to come to a feast prepared for them.
They answered quickly and all promised to come.
They came in such numbers that there wasn't room for them on the shelves, the floor, or the seats.
They began to eat, and they ate with a terrible appetite.
The mother-in-law went around urging them, saying, "Eat, eat your fill, I want every one to have plenty."
They ate and ate and the old woman still urged, hoping the supply would give out and her son-in-law would be killed.
The young man with his wife and her three sisters and their husbands went for more food in case of need.
The Whirlwinds ate till their jaws couldn't move.
"We have enough, Mother, enough," said they.
When DZOGƉOn heard these words he motioned to the walls and roof of the cabin, and said, "I want your roof and walls to become stone."
The old woman and the Flying Heads, finding that they were in a stone house and couldn't get out, flew around in every direction.
The mother-in-law begged for mercy.
"You had no mercy on me," said her son-in-law.
Then he said, "I want this house to be red hot."
As the house grew hot the heads flew about with terrible speed, knocking against the walls and making such a noise as had never been heard in the world before.
But at last all was still.
Then DZOGƉOn with his wife, her three sisters and their husbands set out for his uncle's cabin.
When they reached the lake, it -was covered with ice, so thin that it would barely hold up a small bird.
The young man took eight puff balls from an oak tree, made himself and his friends small, and each one entered a puff ball.
When the eight balls stood side by side on the ice at the edge of the lake, the young man said, "Let the West wind blow!"
The West wind came and swept the balls over the lake.
DZOGƉOn and his friends sprang out of the balls, became of natural size and went on their way till they came to the uncle's cabin.

2023.06.01 00:52 Fast_Bedroom_3267 Story Notes Around TBHC

So... I've been writing a personal story, and it surrounds Tranquility Base Hotel And Casino. A few friends I showed them to said I should share them in the community - I don't know if this is the place to share them, but I thought... May as well. They include my interpretations of the songs as well.
A hotel owner who takes her place as the receptionist... And is also looking for stories to write about, inspiration for her science fiction novels. A lover who decides to not give into is darker, more lustful desires, instead waiting for his lover's calls. A friend who's concerned about what's going on through experience, a friend who's concerned through context. A distant acquaintance that shares the feeling with the lounge singer about still fantasizing about each other from time to time, and that feeling is mutual with other young men. A young lady who is happy to find comfort in the hotel owner's world. Friends that are happy about the new world they can experience. The tales of Tranquility Base Hotel And Casino. (A description for a story inside of a story.)
Star Treatment: This number is the first we hear at the location. It sets the scene as the hotel and casino is a lovely, calm place that the owner has created and started for her friends. We find out the owner has also become the lounge singer, starting a 'cover' band called 'The Martini Police'. This song also makes some references to Science Fiction properties, which the lounge singer loves... We find out the hotel has been opened for everyone... And anyone. The lounge singer puts on a show for her friends, weaving metaphors together, a signature of her work. She even says she just wanted to be like the members of a band, maybe foreshadowing... Her friends look on, happy she's singing. She also makes reference to the fact that she wants to haunt the one she loves and hopes it's okay, but they're in a tough spot... For now. In fact, that may change, everyone's enjoying the residency, which the Lounge Singer even refers to the place as her 'Make-Belive Residency'. And she, along with everyone love it.
One Point Perspective - The Lounge Singer now sings to a much smaller crowd. Her friends that are much closer to her... She lists her intentions, past and present... Everything from starting the 'Cover Band', talkinh about a stunning documentary only she saw, and asking everyone to bear with her, she's losing her train of thought... She says that she's played to quiet rooms like this before, and while there's an element of sadness, she's really just glad and grateful she has friends to talk and sing to about her thought, no matter how random or existential they are. She likes reflection, no matter how small her perspective is... For now.
American Sports - This song is from the perspective of The Concerned Friend From Experience. He's friends with The Hotel Owner, but he's experienced strange visions and dreams that he suspects are tied to the hotel. He reflects on thoughts he keeps to himself, and perhaps he's not the only one having these visions... There may be some overlap with others. He never tells anyone these thoughts, for that's not what his peers are there for. He then makes a snide comment about explosive visions, similar to the American Sports he loves, plays, and sees others just outside playing.
Tranquility Base Hotel And Casino - This song is once again sung by the Lounge Singer. The Hotel Owner has now decided to take her rightful place as the receptionist - Little does she know the consequences... She reflects on everything the place means to her, guiding her friends along this place, to custom rooms and architecture she can't help but adore. She invites the young man she loves to kiss him, and asks her friends what she can do for them. She asks them to let loose, maybe even let their darksides out to play... Something the hotel and casino is trying to bring out. There's also an ominous buzzing and red light, something The Receptionist is trying to figure out why... Something's being hidden, but why? This is her hotel and casino...
Anyways: This track shows exactly why The Hotel Owner takes so much comfort and pride in the hotel and casino, despite the looming visions and possible dangers her friends are sharing - she needs a break from her real life. She reflects on her popular status, and how that has affected what she overshares and overthinks while vacuuming. She comes to sit down in an empty room, and this is the only song not performed in front of anyone else. She just wants to show who she really is, and thanks everyone who's stuck around with her. Being her isn't easy, she has so much to deal with, which others barely take time to think of, just trying to change the conversation to 'Anyways'. The number ends with one of her friends entering to check on her, ending the self-reflection.
Golden Trunks: Something dark is definitely happening at this place... Some people allowing their dark desires to overtake them. But why? This song is from the perspective of The Vindicated Friend. Yet as the number progresses, more voices join in, reflecting that... Everyone knows that The Lounge Singer has her eyes on someone else, he's even The Vindicated Friend's best friend. Yet... The Lounge Singer relented that it's always hard to live on, especially that now she's forgiven him. She admits that sometimes, her fantasies about the past get the better of her. Some over-sharing characteristic of her, he thinks, but he hates the fact he also does... And he's not the only one. Now... They're invited for it to become reality. But by who? The forces of the hotel and casino... Why?
Four Out Of Five: The ominous buzzing and red light has only intensified. And not just for The Receptionist. The Concerned Friend From Context has now found out the 'past' of the establishment, and now she, The Concerned Friend From Experience have gotten more rapid visions... As well as many other patrons. The Lounge Singer puts on a show for the grand opening of The Information Action Ratio, a taqueria she put on the roof of the casino. Yet, beneath her cheery vineer, she knows something is going on in the world she created, at the hotel and casino of her own making. She hates that, and wants to make everything better. She reflects on the state of the world that she doesn't want to return to, and tries to be cheeky and fun, happy to share some lovely Mexican food with her friends. Until she notices some are absent... How? Why? Why have her friends disappeared? Where have they gone?
The World's First Monster Truck Front Flip: A song that is a reflection of The Friend Who's Just Happy To Be Here. It's not that she took her friendship with The Hotel Owner for granted, but she never knew she was capable of... This! She has never had the easiest life, so being offered a getaway where all she has to do is press a button, is a happy comfort she doesn't mind to take part in. She has a lot more trust in The Hotel Owner than The Hotel Owner has in her, but the gap is being closed. There's so much for her, shows for her to see, time she can spend with her friends and her boyfriend. It doesn't matter that the hotel and casino wants her to be a little darker... After all, she's a bad girl trying to be good, happy to have a friend who supports her.
Science Fiction: The Lounge Singer indulges in her cheeky writing, and we find out she's The Aspiring Science Fiction Writer. Dark events are occuring around her, and it's not that she's oblivious, she just doesn't know the depth. She's fine to sing a complicated, multi-layer love song to The Young Man Who's Unsure If He's Even In Love. She even references the fact that him, and his other friends, probably have no idea what she's talking about. She's singing songs about hidden messages, and they're certainly staying that way.
She Looks Like Fun: As The Young Man Who's Unsure If He's Even In Love watches The Lounge Singer, he can't help but sink deeper into his lustful fantasies. He's trying his best to focus on what she's singing about, and even if she does a damn good job singing a line as ridiculous as 'Cheeseburger', he can't help but comb through memories of their past... Maybe if he was to return her feelings, things wouldn't be so bad. She's a damn good dancer, and he's not the only one who thinks so... Everyone watching her would be inclined to agree. Perhaps she would be a fun girlfriend...
Batphone: The Young Man Who's Unsure If He's Even In Love knows there's a batphone that will give him immediate, private access to The Receptionist, but is keen to wait for her to call. Batman imagery means a lot to them, and he reflects in her cheekiness. He's an introspective young man, so he reflects on everything he's never told his friends... The hotel and casino seems to have that effect on people. Another effect occurring is... Dark forces and energy around him. Something strange is going on, but he's oblivious. He's too busy making his observations that he can can only share with The Receptionist. He's chosen to not given into the lustful tendencies that the hotel and casino have called him to. He's still not committing to her, or even giving her a straight answer, but maybe she'll know he's waiting... As he thinks about what's going on in the hotel and casino, because... Come to think of it, where have some of his friends gone?
The Ultracheese: The conflict is over. All that's left is The Hotel Owner and her friends. Tranquility Base Hotel And Casino is going to close its doors temporarily, as it'll have to be re-done soon, and The Hotel Owner will have to return to reality. She thinks about the ironic death she could die, despite the fact she's immortal... Writing songs about everything she's lost, like the friends that she still thinks of, has pictures of on the wall. Those people were far from her friends, so now she's just happy that she has the friends that surround her now that lover her no matter what. She knows she's done things in the past she shouldn't have, and even apologizes for the damage that may have been caused from the hotel and casino. Her friends embrace her in a hug, and she looks out, not just to The Young Man Who's Unsure If He's Even In Love, but to all of her friends, that despite everything, especially in the past year, she's never stopped loving them. Their presence has made this sad song at least into a bittersweet one. It's the perfect way to end their summer, and the perfect bookend of their friendships.
However, even the songs that aren't primarily sung by The Lounge Singer, she still sings these songs in her dreams... These songs are their stories, but the whole thing is her story as well.

Written by Vincent O’Sullivan and first published in January 1916; translated to modern English, otherwise left exactly the same.

------

[Introduction]
One night— during my last voyage across the Atlantic— someone mentioned that we were passing over the spot where the Lusitania went down. Whether or not this was true, the thought alone was enough to dampen the mood and begin a serious discussion regarding the emotional state of the passengers when they realized they were sinking. From there, the conversation turned to the fate of those who drowned, (after all, they were the fortunate ones) and tales of the survivors.
A Scottish lady asked if their ghosts ever appeared on passing ships and if there was a risk of seeing one should the light in her cabin go out. This put an end to everyone’s seriousness, and most of us laughed— all except for a short, tight-faced man whose expression was bleak and gray. The lady noticed this and appealed to him for support.
ā€œDo you also believe in ghosts?ā€ She asked lightly.
He hesitated, thinking it over before replying. ā€œIn ghosts? N-no, I don’t; I’ve never seen one… Have any of you?ā€
No one replied. Instead, most of us laughed again— only a little uneasily this time— and the man continued. ā€œAll the same— even if you discount the existence of ghosts— life is filled with strange happenings that just can’t be explained. You try to laugh them off until you experience something big enough to truly shock you, and then you stop laughing entirely… It’s like being thrown out of a carā€”ā€
The man’s words were cut off by the blast of the ship’s whistle, and everyone rushed up to the deck, but we had only entered a fogbelt. I ended up smoking a cigar and walking the upper deck with the bleak man who soon returned to the topic of our dinner conversation; it was clear that our laughter had bothered him.
ā€œLife is filled with so many strange things... You can laugh at faith-healing, dreams, and all of that until something unexplainable happens. Then, you have to throw your hands up and admit that you don’t have an answer. I’m as logical as any man here, but I’ve experienced such a situation. It doesn’t matter whether or not other people believe it— it happened. I can’t doubt it any more than I could doubt having a tooth pulled. If you will sit in this corner with me— out of the wind— I’ll tell you about itā€¦ā€

[The Burned House]
Some years ago, I had to be in Northern England for several months while I appeared before the courts. The trial itself is irrelevant, and I’ve forgotten most of the details anyway, but it was a long and worrisome case that added twenty years to my age. All of my time in that grimy Manchester courtroom was spent thinking of a fresh little place in the Lake District and how I would go there if the trial went well; it was the only thing that helped pass the hours.
The morning after I was acquitted, I boarded the north-bound train. It was early autumn, so— by the time I arrived— the sun had already set, and it was cold. The village was dark and deserted; they don’t go out at night anyway, but the strong mountain wind was enough to deter anyone who might try.
The hotel was not modernized like the great ones in the city. Instead, it was a real old-fashioned tavern— one of the most uncomfortable places on earth. They show you that traveling is like being in prison— that home is the best place for you— both morally and physically. The landlord brought me supper with a hat on his head and a pipe in his mouth. The room was chilly, but when I asked for a fire, he said he couldn’t go to the woodshed until morning. There was nothing else to do after I ate, so I went outside to escape the smell and warm myself with a short walk.
Being unfamiliar with the area, I didn’t mean to go far, but it was an overcast night with high winds and occasional rain flurries. Even with the moon concealed behind the clouds, it lit the night well enough to see a good distance ahead, so I continued walking until I was in a lonely, isolated region. Large trees and shrubs lined the road, and there was a mountain stream several feet below. The wind blowing through the high trees combined with the racing water sounded like a crowd of people. Sometimes the tree branches became so thick, it was like walking through a black pit, but then I would return to the gray countryside.
I had been walking for about 45 minutes when I came to a fork in the road. One side led downward— almost reaching the stream below— and the one I decided to follow ascended a steep hill. I climbed for more than half a mile fully aware of how lost I would be should I lose track of a landmark. Then the path curved and came out onto a broad plateau, where— to my astonishment— I saw a house.
It was three-storeys high with a verandah around two sides, and it overlooked a far stretch of the country. There were a few large trees nearby and a clump of bushes behind it, but the home seemed lonely with all four sides so vulnerable to the wind. Regardless, I was glad to know there were people who could give me directions if I became lost… Except— once I got closer— I found that it was uninhabited. All the shutters were closed, and there wasn’t a flicker of light to be seen.
There was something sinister and barren about it that made me shiver. It was the same feeling as if one were to consider jumping into the black waters of the stream below. It’s not an entirely unpleasant feeling— it makes one appreciate their current safety that much more. I wasn’t really frightened. I was alone— miles from any help and at the mercy of anyone who might be lurking behind those sullen shutters— but I knew that I was most likely safe. My hesitation was due to the wild scenery’s effect on my nerves along with the unexpected discovery of such a lonely house.
Instead of continuing along the road, I walked roughly 250 yards through the grass until coming to a stone wall where I rested and surveyed the scene. A strange light lingered atop the far away hills— like the first touch of dawn on a rainy morning or the last glimpse of twilight before the night comes. Between myself and the hills was a wide stretch of open country with an apple orchard to my right. A set of steps had been made in the wall of piled stones so the residents could go back and forth.
After standing there for a considerable time, I noticed a man coming towards me from the orchard. He was a tall, skinny fellow with a clean shaven face, and he wore a cowboy hat with a woolen shirt and rubber boots. He walked with a good stride and appeared to be between 25 and 30. As he began crossing over the stone wall, I wished him a neighborly goodnight, but he made no reply. Instead, he looked right at me, and his expression made me uneasy. He didn’t have an evil face— in fact it was a handsome, serious face— but it was ravaged by something terrible. It had the look of stealth, ruthlessness, and a deadly resolution… Yet he also held the appearance of a man driven by some uncontrollable power— a man asking for comprehension and mercy. It was impossible to resent his rudeness; his thoughts were so obviously elsewhere that I doubt he even saw me.
He had only passed by a few seconds ago when I turned to look for him, but he’d disappeared. Even if he’d sprinted, he couldn’t have gotten inside so quickly, but I like to attribute things I don’t understand to natural causes that I’ve merely failed to observe. Surely the man went back into the orchard or some other opening farther down… Or maybe the distorted light was playing tricks on my eyes… Either way, that’s when I noticed lights appearing behind the house’s shutters; they were flickering— going from bright to dim— and glowing like a fire. It didn’t take long to become convinced that’s exactly what it was; the house was on fire!
Black smoke billowed from the roof while red sparks flew in the wind. Suddenly, a pair of shutters were thrown open above the verandah, and I heard a woman scream. I ran towards the house as fast as I could until I could see her clearly.
She was young, and her long hair fell in disarray over a white nightgown. She stretched out her bare arms, screaming, and then a man grabbed her from behind, but they were trapped. The flames were licking around the windows, and the smoke was killing them as the house began to cave in over where they stood. Appalled by the horrible tragedy, I moved even closer; if the two could make their way to the side without the verandah— they could jump, and I could try to break their fall.
I shouted this plan to them, but— as I came right up to the flames— I noticed something astonishing… The fire wasn’t producing any heat! Truly— I was standing close enough to be burned, yet I felt no heat whatsoever! The sparks flew all around my head— some even landed on my hands— but I wasn’t even singed; likewise, there was no glare against the sky. That’s when I noticed the smoke was billowing in great columns, yet I wasn’t choked by it at all— I didn’t so much as smell it! I stood there stupefied as the whole house was engulfed by a flaming tornado and crumbled into a red ruin.
Heart stricken, I made my way down the hill while shouting for help and came to a small, wooden bridge. At the end, there was a rope fastened to the railing and thrown over the side… Looking down, I saw a man hanging between the road and the stream; upon closer inspection, I recognized him as the man I saw exiting the orchard. His hat had fallen off, and the tips of his boots just barely touched the water.
It didn’t seem possible, but there was no denying he was the same man. I scrambled to the bottom hoping to lift the body and relieve the weight on the rope. I was just able to reach his loose shirt, yet there was no resistance when I pulled, and— for a moment— I thought the shirt tore loose; then I realized my hand had closed on nothing but air… I was so suffocated by the horror that I feared losing consciousness.
I began running and stumbling along that dark road in total panic; the only thing I could think to do was wake the whole town and bring more men back to the bridge… At least, that was my intention, but— when the village was finally within sight— I instinctively slowed down and began to think it over more logically… After all, I was a stranger in those parts… One who had just endured a rather disagreeable trial, and country folk are notoriously suspicious by default.
I was already at my limit for baseless accusations, so I decided the smartest option was to drop a few hints to the landlord. That way, I could decide how to proceed based on his reaction. I found him exactly as I’d left him— still sitting in that same spot while he smoked.
ā€œWell, I was wondering where you ran off to.ā€ He said slowly.
I told him about my walk and casually mentioned the forked road and hill before asking who lived in the house at the top.
For a moment he only stared at me in confusion before confidently replying, ā€œhouse? There’s no house up there. Old Joe Snedeker owns that land, and he wants to build a house for his son after the boy gets married, but he ain’t even gotten started yet… Some folks don’t think he ever will.ā€
ā€œI’m pretty sure I saw a houseā€¦ā€ I protested feebly, lacking the courage to dispute his claim. I couldn’t stop thinking about the fact there was no heat or substance to it.
The landlord gave me a look of concern with his next response. ā€œYou seem a bit out of it; maybe it would be best for you to get some sleep...ā€

-----

[Conclusion]
The man paused from telling his story, and— for a moment— we sat in silence, listening to the hum of the machinery and the lashing sea merge with the singing voices from the deck below.
As a rule, we tend to feel a shade of contemptuous superiority over those who believe in their dreams or a fortune-teller’s predictions, and that’s what I felt now. ā€œHallucinations— it was just your eyes playing tricks. Your nerves were probably shattered after the long strain of your trial.ā€ I said with reassuring indulgence
ā€œThat’s what I thought, too— especially after I returned to the hill the following morning… There was no sign of the house ever existing.ā€ He replied shortly.
ā€œAnd no corpse at the bridge?ā€ I asked with a laugh.
ā€œAnd no corpse at the bridge.ā€ He confirmed while trying to light another cigar. It took a little time, but— once he managed it— he rose from his chair and stood looking down at me before continuing.
ā€œNow, listen. I told you this all happened several years ago. I’d almost forgotten it; if you can convince yourself that something was only your imagination— the memory begins to dim inside your head. Once you recognize it as a delusion, it loses its hold on you. Whenever I would remember it, I would think of how close I came to losing my mind; that’s all. Last year, I went back to that same hotel and talked to the same landlord who immediately remembered me as the man who thought he saw the house. After sharing a laugh, he said a house had since been built up there.
ā€œHe also said it would’ve been better if the house had never existed. Old Snedeker built his son a big, fine house with a veranda on two sides, and Young Joe began courting Mabel Elting. She was from Windermere, but she worked at a shop in Liverpool. She used to date a fellow named Jim Travers, and he was wild about her; he’d save his money to go visit her, but she eventually ended the relationship to marry Joe— probably because of his house and his old man’s money. Well, Jim went crazy, and— on the newlywed’s very first night in their new home— he burned it down while the couple slept… The landlord speculated the guy must have been drunk; he’d always known Jim as a quiet, gentle man…
ā€œHe looked surprised when I told him that wasn’t the case, but when he asked if I’d heard about the incident, I simply said no and prompted him to continue. After burning the young couple in their bed, he hung himself at the little bridge just before the road forked… He personally witnessed the body hanging on the following morning and saw that the tips of Jim’s boots just barely touched the waterā€¦ā€

2023.05.31 22:45 Slimedive Where would you put a mini-split head in this low cathedral ceiling room?

I'm looking to get a small mini split installed in this room, but I can't figure out where to install the head. Here are pictures, disregard the furniture, these are pictures from the house listing and none of that is ours.

https://i.imgur.com/0arQadj.jpg

The cathedral ceiling is butted up against the roof, so it's not really accessible that high up. The rest of the house is on the side with the red arrows, so the unit has to be on the green side. On the green side, the unit would presumably have to be placed below the roof, which is only 4 feet up - I don't know if it's appropriate to set the unit that close to the floor.
Alternatively, and this strikes me as a weird solution, but it might be possible to put the unit inside the closet and we could perhaps tear down the closet walls.

What would you do?

2023.05.31 22:39 nojustnobro The URRR Recap (May 2023)

Gud maowning err'vy baowdie. Here's the based recap of the dis month's episodes from hit anime series Urban Rescue Ranch.
Read Last Month Recap
It's confirmed that the vidiyas posted are actually done a few days in advance for Uncle Ben's mental sake and so he can focus more on rehabilitation. As a result, the recap is solely focused on the vidiyas and other content like Instagram stories are more up-to-date. Uncle Ben also reminds everyone to not simply drop off animals at his ranch due to legal reasons; some animals cannot be rehabilitated if he doesn't have the right permit and resources to do so.
That being said, Uncle Ben has gotten his wildlife permit! This month was mostly spent on him setting up the ranch to be properly inspected and receiving his well-deserved permit so he could rescue other animals. In addition to this, he also has an exotic snake permit and is still working on getting more permits to work with. The inspectors are aware of the current housing situation and had given him advice and notes on what to change on the ranch before the final inspection. As a result, the property has been heavily altered.
The trailer, Ouncetopia, and the barn have been completely cleaned up, and some animals are either relocated or now free reign. The trailer was gutted out so it can be used to rehabilitate songbirds and small mammals. The kitchen and bathroom area will be used for rehabilitation needs and ready to be used when the next animal comes in. Ouncetopia has been completely cleaned out; Uncle Ben has decided to have the prairie dogs free-reign for the summer. Mrs. Ounce and Cringe have created holes in the property and like to reside under the shipping container without needing to return to Ouncetopia, so the shed is cleaned out to take in future rabbits and possums if needed; future renovations are planned. The barn saw the most cleanup: the capybaras and kangaroos are moved out to prepare for other animals that could be rehabilitated and aquatic enclosures were made to house animals like turtles in the future. One of those enclosures will be used by Gustavo Fring when he will eventually moves out of Uncle Ben's home. The capybaras are taken to a new enclosure that minimizes mud-rolling and is closer to the pond while the kangaroos get to free reign. The trampoline area is currently being occupied by Pog and Queen since they like the trampoline and need to be isolated from the other animals while construction and reorganization are going on. Kennels were also set up to house future animals.
The new house is still at a somewhat standstill. The roof is put on but siding has not been added despite the go-ahead given. Uncle Ben still lives in his current house and is hoping to move once the new house actually finishes, which would probably happen after getting the permits done and getting Gustavo Fring out of his house.
The chickens that live in the barn are now mothers to several chicks! It is revealed that both hens have laid eggs in the hay blocks and several of them were born. Mother and babies are doing well, with them mostly living in one of the several kennels set up. Uncle Ben plans on giving the chicks to friends in the future due to the sheer amount of them born. The hay was moved elsewhere so they wouldn't nest any further. The chicks like to eat the maggots from the capybara poop, which arguably would allow them to be well-fed without having to be given other foods. Uncle Ben has put out chick starters just in case and the two hens are helping each other raise their babies together.
At the inspector's request, due to Uncle Ben's current house becoming an office space and another rehabilitation area in the future, no more domestic animals are in the home. The only animals left in the house are Gustavo Fring, who is still growing and eating pinkies, and a pigeon Uncle Ben has taken in named Geronimo (sometimes called Gerbingerbones). Sometimes, Big Ounce is brought in, but he mostly lives outside to free-reign.
Uncle Ben has had some pigeons and doves given to him this month; the doves were quickly given away due to lack of permit and the pigeons, which were baby birds blown out of their nest at the Waco Tortilla Bridge, were hand-fed until they could move into the pigeon loft. Geronimo was part of a pair of pigeons that came separately but his sibling was dragged off by a wild animal when the two were left on the porch one night. Geronimo was given extra care and as a result now stays on Uncle Ben's shoulders, sometimes flying back to him when he's thrown into the air. Although Geronimo stays next to Uncle Ben most of the time, he is sometimes put in the loft. The loft (which is now two different housing setups) itself now houses the pigeons from Baylor University, the Tortilla Bridge, Geronimo, some more pigeons from a friend, and recent baby pigeons that were hatched!
Patrick Bateman's limp is no more and has now moved outdoors. While he is still drinking, he is slowly being weaned and taught to eat solid foods by Big Ounce. An enclosure was set up for him to rest in and Master Oogway likes to spend time in there as well. Patrick Bateman has gotten into humping Uncle Ben's leg as well. He gets along with the kangaroos, who tolerate him at best, and he has been introduced to the rest of the prairie dogs. Sometimes he will follow Uncle Ben around and does zoomies.
New Kyle has been rehomed. Uncle Ben gave him to a friend, who has a similar-aged female Rhea and decided to give him to her. The chicks that were bought to teach New Kyle to eat were given away but Winchester (formerly New Remington) stayed. Initially staying in the barn, he now free roams but mostly stays with the rheas, who tolerate him too. The hogs that were with Petunia were rehomed after bullying her too much. Petunia remains in her pen by herself, which she doesn't mind.
Meanwhile, Discord Kitten Nitro (formerly known as New Tupac and Bubus) was adopted by Lamar from Prairie Creek Ponds for his daughter. Nitro was discovered on a friend's roof abandoned by his mom and needing to be frequently fed due to his age. Because of how young he was, he was taken in by Uncle Ben and bottle-fed until he can eat solids on his own and therefore be adopted. Although Uncle Ben doesn't mind helping rehabilitate kittens, he is unable to keep Nitro due to being allergic to cats; he mentions he is fine with kittens but will get allergic reactions to grown cats for some reason.
Part of why Pog and Queen are locked up is for Billie Eyelash's sake. Although progress is made to get her used to them, Queen is still a major concern; she likes to try chasing the animals such as Master Oogway and Billie Eyelash around as a way to get her zoomies out of the way and try playing with them. Despite this, Billie Eyelash has gotten more familiar with Uncle Ben and the rest of the animals. She is spending more time not following Dababy around as much and letting Uncle Ben pet her without being afraid. He even got to shake her hand! She likes to hang out near the capybara enclosure by herself under the tree and has gotten more use to the dogs' antics. Dababy and Kevin remain aggressive, with Kevin now often tripping over his feeding trough whenever Uncle Ben comes near.
Kevin and Obama finally show proper incubation behavior. A big part of why the two of them have their eggs taken is due to them not remaining on their nests to help incubate their eggs. Kevin finally shows his behavior for the first time on the ranch, which allowed Uncle Ben to no longer collect eggs, but he remains aggressive because he's Kevin; as a result, he often trips over his feeding trough to try to get to Uncle Ben and tries to attack him at any opportunity. Obama has remained in her nest and ended up hatching a few goslings. Initially, Uncle Ben thought he would not be getting any more babies after no hatches were found after New Kyle, but was surprised at seeing the goslings for the first time.
Since being allowed to free-reign, Mrs. Ounce and Cringe have made a ton of holes around the property and they like to reside under the shipping container. Mrs. Ounce has gotten aggressive to whoever would try to get close to him, attacking Uncle Ben and others in the process. Correction on the last post: Mrs. Ounce hasn't been rehomed yet but will be in the future with Cringe. To minimize attacks, Uncle Ben stays away from the prairie dogs and has Big Ounce separate from the group when he needs to go out. Cringe is revealed to enjoy swimming in the water. Having them free roam meant that they can drink out of the pond whenever they are thirsty.
The most important news of all: Uncle Ben's pond is now complete! Thank you, Prairie Creek Ponds, Team Aquascape, and Pondscapes of Charlotte!
The pond was drained and rebuilt to be bigger, have a wetland filter, and have an intake bay to help make maintenance easier. Team Aquascape and Pondscapes of Charlotte have made their own vlogs about the experience as well! With some landscaping, the pond area is also covered in sod and some plants were added to it as well. Uncle Ben plans on adding more vegetation but is trying to figure out what things to do around the pond as well; the renovations left him with a ton of dirt and empty areas that he has no idea what to fill with and is looking for suggestions. He has some fruit trees and put items like bamboo near the water to make the area look prettier.
Uncle Ben has moved the fish from his tank and caught more fish to be added to the pond. Bubble Bass, the channel catfish, cichlids, sunfishes, crappies, and some tagged gars were put in as well as tree frogs and rosy-red minnows that can be used to eat their waste and be eaten by the other fishes. The crawfish, goldfish, and snake that used to live in the pond were either moved into the other ponds or released elsewhere. As a result, egrets, cranes, and herons have been coming over to the other ponds to eat the goldfish in the other ponds. Tree frogs were brought in as well, with most of them residing in the nearby trees and their tadpoles swimming in the water with the minnows.
Although Uncle Ben planned on having the pond area more organized before showing the capybaras the area, they have been collectively escaping their enclosure and going to the pond anyways. The capybaras love both the main pond and wetland filter areas, often doing dubious things in addition to swimming, and their enclosure is intentionally put close to the pond so Uncle Ben can let them out on certain days. He plans on using the poop that shows up in the pond to be used as fertilizer for fruit trees that will be planted near the pond in the future. The current enclosure they are in still has their small tub of water they can still swim in.
Uncle Ben suspects at least two or all of the capybaras are males. He notes that some of them look smaller than others while some seem to have male features like prominent-looking scent glands and testicles. While he doesn't mind having a mix of males and females or having all males, he plans on neutering the capybaras if the latter is the case as a means of minimizing hormonal behavior. Kumala seems to be more affectionate and comfortable around Uncle Ben, enjoying pets more often compared to Savesta. Uncle Ben suspects this is due to him giving Kumala constant attention after the fight.
To celebrate, Uncle Ben took a trip to Matagorda County with Geronimo, Kyle the Fish whisperer, B-Alt, and Big Ounce. He went fishing to catch shrimp and helped tag some sharks. The shrimp and fish he caught were eaten on the shore. He is also looking for interns to work with him in the summer.

2023.05.31 21:24 ChimpdenEarwicker The Mason & Dixon Movie Teaser/Beginning

I was reading through this section of Mason & Dixon and I realized that it would make an absolutely bonkers beginning to a movie. I decided to write it up for fun. I moved things around and retouched certain things as you might with a movie script. I realize this post is thorough proof of my insanity.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
page 132 near bottom beginning "after all, what's being confin'd upon the Summit of a living Volcano" continuing to 134 "an instance of extra-terrestrial Plantation"
Scene 1 St. Helena circa 1730s: The camera races across a dark ocean at some point past sunset as this section of the text is narrated, ahead a dark shape looms (the island). There is no sound from the wind since the camera is utterly given over to it. Maskelyne and Mason are standing on a ridge outside the astronomy hut, though we cannot see them yet, we can hear their conversation as the camera approaches on the wind from afar. The moment the mysterious void envelopes them "till at length rolling overhead" the camera reaches overhead of Mason and Maskelyne. With Maskelyne looking past the camera in rapture, a terrific rainstorm begins. The scene continues on as they race around the hut shuttering open windows until they both sit down to drink. They discuss St. Helena as essentially an alien planet itself, and St. Helena is portrayed as like so many colonized planets in scifi, a property to be exploited and possessed in a desperate escape from the center..

page 134 beginning "One cloudless afternoon.." continuing to 135 "How soon is this that we are talking about?"
Scene 2 Mason and Maskelyne at the dying Orange Grove On St. Helena: Maskelyne ruminates about the end of the world. Visually the shot conveys this imagery "Houses with red Tile roofs preside over small Valleys, the Pasture lying soft as Sheep, -- all, with the volcanic Meadow where the two stand, circl'd by the hellish Cusps of Peaks unnatural, -- frozen in mid-thrust, jagged at every scale". This serves to further clarify that the location is St. Helena. Maskelyne portrays St. Helena as alive and cursed.

--- Some segway of Mason wondering how Dixon is doing brings us to Cape Town ---

page 154 beginning "I am done with that. I am a Farmer now." continuing to 154 "then enlarg'd the Hole myself"
Scene 3 Cape Town Dixon in the brothel with a former cop: An unhinged former police officer of the dutch slave colony talks about "escaping" what he perceives as colonialism to Dixon as they get drunk. This scene is connected to Scene 4 by slightly compressing things so that Dixon sees Vroom stumble out just as the cop finishes his narrative with "then enlarg'd the hole myself". Dixon drags Vroom out into the early morning.

page 155 beginning "Dixon returns to the Vroom residence" continuing to 155 "as likely as the next to hold a chance of ruin"
Scene 4 Cape Town returning to the Vroom residence: Dixon stumbles back into the Vroom house early morning, both disheveled, Vroom clearly very drunk and barely able to stand. Some of the daughters are awake in the house and give them side eye without addressing anything directly, the weight of the atrocity and sin at capetown permeates everything. The camera raises up to the window of one of the girls who is still asleep (maybe Greet?) and enters her dream.

page 155 beginning "In their Dreams they ever return to Prisons of Stone" continuing on to 155 "the traditional name, here, for an elder Brother"
Scene 5 The Dream and The Clock: "In their Dreams they ever return to Prisons of Stone, to Gates with Seals 'tis Death to break, the odor of soap and Slops, the Stillness of certain Corridors, the unchallengeable Love of a Tyrant, Yellow Light from unseen Watch-Fires flickering upon the Wall, and unexpectedly, rounding a particular Croner, to the tall Clock from Home, ringing the Quarter-Hour." There is a sequence of shots that roughly conveys the above imagery and ends with the girl rounding a corner to see the Vroom Clock (like a grandfather clock). The girl approaches the clock in rapture as the camera zooms slowly in, the clock "stands deep in the House, in a passageway between the Front and the Back,--- the two Worlds". The ticking becomes louder. The shot ends with her reflection in the glass panel of the clock, the next scene begins with a similar profile shot of her face.

page 155 "When Mason and Dixon arriv'd with the Elliot Clock" continuing on to 156 "Go carefully"
Scene 6 Greet Warns Dixon About Clocks: Scene involves Greet and Mason alone in a side room in the Vroom house, this scene could be connected to Scene 5 by suggesting it is a further extension of the dream. Greet warns Mason for his own safety to keep the state secret of his accurate clock from the Dutch and its use to find a method of determining latitude a secret. She may be trying to seduce him but she might also just be using the cover of trying to seduce to genuinely warn him of a danger to his life.

page 156 "Down in the Castle" continuing on to end of chapter
Scene 7 Zoom Out On The Ticking Time Bomb Of Cape Town: Narration here is accompanied by scenes that might involve showing interrogations, perhaps a montage showing multiple brutalities all with the camera focused on a clock in the corner, steadily dividing reality into a European colonialism... Scene 6 and Scene 7 could involve visual motifs on clock faces. A file by Dutch police on Mason is maybe shown.

--- Some segway of Dixon wondering how Mason is doing brings us back to St. Helena ---

page 160 beginning "I was out upon the Cliffs today" continuing to 162 "with all finer Motions lost in that Simplicity"
Scene 8 Back To St. Helena, The Ghost Of Dieter: The ghost story of Dieter is described here, the scene cuts between Maskelyne trying to talk Dieter back from jumping off the sheer cliff and Maskelyne describing it later to Mason. The wind is blowing extremely hard but there is no sound of wind in the shot with Maskelyne and Dieter. The shot begins with Maskelyne seeing Dieter alone facing the sea about to jump, as the scene ends with Maskelyne telling Mason "'We may sail with the Wind... at the same speed, working all its nuances, -- or we may stand still, and feel its full true Course and Speed upon us, with all finer Motions lost in that Simplicity." a shot of Dieter stepping off the cliff before Maskelyne even begins talking to him is shown.

page 164 beginning "Once, long before dawn..." continuing to 165 "She nods, her smile not, so far, terrible"
Scene 9 Mason Wakes Up: Scene 8 is framed as a dream/memory Mason just woke up from. Pitchblack, howling wind, absolutely incessant loud banshee wailing that begins to drift almost back from a dissonant tone into "entire orchestral Performances, of musick dstinctly not British,---Viennese, perhaps, Hungarian, even Moorish" (perhaps some Steve Reich style music?). Mason comes awake to this mix of howling and orchestra, the hut practically rattling to pieces from it, his colleague passed out drunk on the other side of the hut underneath a pile of books and telescopes or something. At this point it might be explained by introduced dialogue that Maskelyne will be the future head Royal Astronomer. Propelled by some unknown force Mason wanders out of the hut into the wind. This is on the windward side of an extremely remote rocky, volcanic island with dramatic lava flow cliffs.
Scene 10 Mason walks out into the night: Mason "enters the Wind, picks his way 'cross Boot-slashing Rock up over the ridgeline and down unto the floor of a ruin'd ebony forest, where among fog-wisps and ancient black logging debris polish'd by the Wind, [his dead wife Rebecca] accosts him shiv'ring in his Cloak. The Ocean beats past the tiny accidental island" Mason sees his dead wife, this is made evident in the trailer through context. This scene might also include a flashback as Mason makes eye contact with his dead wife's ghost to the first time Mason sees her, allegedly, during the Octuple Cheese incident... Perhaps the sequence is 1. Mason looks up to see a gap in the clouds where for one moment the full moon passes through, this is a zoomed in telephoto with the moon occupying almost the entire shot 2. we flashback to the Octuple Cheese rolling by in an echo visual of the moon (not really understood by the audience now as anything but an abstract visual shot). 3. THEN mason sees her ghost as he looks down from the sky.
page 172 beginning "He tries teasing her with his earth-bound Despair" to end of chapter
Scene 10 Rebecca's ghost continued: Mason tries to figure out if it is really her by asking her annoying question about the stars that she would hate. She laughs at him for needing a reason for life and though a ghost laughing doesn't translate that well... this is the emotional beat Mason goes from being terrified this is some devilish creature imitating his wife to "knowing" it is really her somehow. Mason and Rebecca reminisce about how she believed the stars were aliens visitors in the sky when Rebecca was alive... Rebecca tells Mason to live life and move on. Rebecca's ghost disappears into the wind.
Scene 11 Next Day: Mason can't sleep the rest of the night, Maskelyne is passed out til basically noon the next day. Time is shown to pass. When Maskelyne wakes he asks if Mason came in at a very early hour in the morning. Mason, not really trusting the slightly insane Maskelyne and shaken from seeing the ghost of his dead wife denies it. Maskelyne says it must have been his soldier friend Dieter in an unhinged way. Perhaps Maskelyne is sitting with the two dueling pistols looking at Mason with a murderous intent, perhaps Maskelyne actually aims a pistol at Mason here. It is clear there is NOBODY else around and that Maskelyne could straight up murder Mason with no real repercussions.
*dissonant orchestral music and wind swell back*

page 173 beginning "He runs without delay down to the shingle and begins assembling a Signal-Fire"
Scene 12 Drone Shot Of Mason Careening Down Slope To Shore: orchestral music plays here simultaneously dissonant with a voice singing one of Mason & Dixon's songs, perhaps the song on page 130 "Well Sailor ahoy". Perhaps Mason careening down the slope is mirrored by cuts to the Octuple Cheese careening down a slope, with the moment Mason reaches the shore and lights the signal fire cutting back on the strike of a match to the Octuple Cheese looming about to flatten Mason who is then shoved by an arm (Rebecca's) intruding from outside the frame at the last moment. When the dhow sees the fire and comes into shore the music and wind reaches a crescendo of silence for the moment that the disembodied voice whispers "Break-neck". Maskelyne is seen from the ridge as a sort of alien. The scene ends with the dhow leaving the shore.

page 175 beginning of chapter
Scene 13 Zoomed Telephoto Shot Of Castle Rock: This is a short shot, it is mainly there to serve as the gateway between two worlds. The dhow crosses the zoomed telephoto shot, centered right at the moment it passes from the windward side to the leeward side with the volcanic cliffs filling the frame on one side and the sky and sea the other, the music ends here abruptly as the ship crosses back to the land of the living. Mason is shown in a closeup shot on the ship to be oblivious to the approach of this transition and is only made aware of it when a bit of cloth or rope whipping in the wind he was fixating on in a sort of distracted trance suddenly loses its animation and becomes motionless. Mason looks up, the boats crew presently sets lines out to fish and Mason briefly seems to come back to reality.

page 175 beginning of chapter
Scene 14 Mason is left at Break-neck: Mason wades from the dow onto the beach, oddly at ease and continues in a "Road-Trance". A series of short shots convey a walk of some distance. Finally Mason finds himself walking along the wall to a building, nobody is around, the sunlight is harsh and austere. He sees the ear museum. Perhaps a shot along the wall of the building that closely suggests a side profile of a head.

beginning page 176 "Mason is chargin'd to find set in a low Wall" and page 177 beginning "Naive Mason. First he must endure the [show]", the text of page 175 and 177 explaining the origin of the ear is conveyed in Nick Mournival's "show" (Nick Mournival cast as Danny Devito)
Scene 15 The Entrance To The Ear: A silent physical comedy scene is portrayed here where Mason sees the sign, has some expression on his face of "seriously, shit isn't weird enough today right?" (think Doc in the Inherent Vice movie). The camera shows a shot of the wall centered on the gnomelike entrance to the museum. You see Mason's legs walk into the frame, stop, shift, then Mason stoops down into the shot to look at the door. Mason then gets up and tries to hop up and peek over the wall. An overgrown garden is shown. While this is happening Nick Mournival begins his "show" as a voice over to the scene. This conveys the origin of the ear on (page 175 and page 177) to the audience as an audio over the (technically preceding in the text) physical comedy scene with Mason. Mason is strangely compelled to climb through the gnomedoor down the rabbit hole into the cave. The last shot of Mason from outside perhaps portrays the building as a head protruding from the island, the tunnel then the ear canal (or...?).
Nick Mournival ends his explanation of Jenkin's Ear with the description of Jenkin's governship of St. Helena. Mason through the darkness of the tunnel sees the portrait of Jenkin's revealed by a lit candle (on the bottom of page 177) . A slight re-arrangement of dialogue is done here so this sequence ends with Nick Mournival saying "Think of it as the closest thing you're apt to see to Helen's Face, and for one Pistole 'tis a Bargain" (page 176). Mason replies "Bit steep, isn't it? Where, ehm, are you, by the way... the Echo in here, --"
*Nick Mournival is revealed in a quasi-jumpscare*

page 177 beginning "in the straight and increasingly malodorous space where they crouch" continuing to 180 "may you fare better in the life you resume, than ever did I in the one I abandon'd"
Scene 16 The Ear: the scene continues pretty much as it is written from here with the slight change that Nick Mournival directly prompts/threatens Mason to use the Chronoscope. Nick Mournival is established from being dressed extremely finely as some kind of rich CEO (that basically owns this island thousands of miles from any exterior help) that for some terrifying reason is now banished? to live under the earth caretaking for a supernatural ear... This scene is trippy and terrifying with the ear portrayed like a campy horror movie radioactive specimen. Nick Mournival is shown, like Maskelyne to be unhinged and ready to kill Mason.

page 180 beginning "Having squirm'd past the last obstacle" continuing to "then Rain, salt from the Leagues of Vacant Ocean"
Scene 17 Mason Stumbles Into The Overgrown Courtyard: Mason stumbles out, Nick Mournival's song shut to silence as the door closes behind him. The camera hangs overhead looking down at the courtyard, Mason stumbles into the center of it, voices from all over the island can be heard as the camera rotates parallel with Mason as he begins "like a Dog, to explore the Walls, proceeding about the stone Perimeter. Bright green Vines with red trumpet-shap'd Flowers brighter indeed than the Day really allows". If the camera did not rotate with Mason, Mason would be proceeding like the hand of a clock from the camera's perspective above. The camera begins to rise over Mason, still looking straight down, the walls of the courtyard impossibly elongating like the tube of a telescope in a Dolly Zoom effect as another rainstorm breaks out echoing the one in the beginning of this movie.

page 181 beginning "Are you suggesting there's some other reason for his long Sojurn there" continuing to end of chapter
Scene 18 On The Ship Home To England: It is established that time has passed and that Mason & Dixon are together on a ship back to England. During their conversation Mason stares down into his beer, the camera adopts his point of view looking down into a square beer glass (in a compositional echo of the courtyard shot in Scene 17). The shot shifts to Maskelyne to doing the same thing in his astronomy hut while the dialogue continues on between Mason & Dixon. Maskelyne is again drunk and looks up at the stars seeing double (from being drunk). Here is interjected Mason or Dixon quoting James Bradley's paper to the Royal Society that announced the Abberation Of Light Bradley discovered years earlier on St. Helena (that Maskelyne is in the shadow of) in a fashion like a famous quote not recited to inform but to repeat a well-worn mantra. The scene the continues on to the end of the chapter as written with the promise that Mason & Dixon will go on to survey the U.S. (the rest of the movie :P).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Description Of James Bradley's discovery of the aberration of light
> While sailing the Thames, he noticed how a vane atop the mast changed direction as the boat turned, despite the fact that the wind remained blowing in the same direction. Bradley suggested that analogously, the apparent shift in the position observed in the stars was a result of of a combination of the transmission of light at a finite speed from the star and the annual movement of the Earth around the Sun. This is what is known as the aberration of light. The letter from Bradley to Halley referencing this phenomenon was read to the Royal Society in January 1729.

2023.05.31 20:54 CmanXP 11th Primarch [Theory]

So, the two lost Primarchs are super interesting to me. I'm aware of the mindset that the "two lost Primarchs are so anybody can form their own Legion," but that's lame as hell.
So here's how I arrived to my conclusion:
We hear Sanguinius get censured by Horus the Warmaster (pre-Heresy, obviously) after Sang was forced to put Alatros down after he succumbed to the Red Thirst. Horus asked Sang, after Sang came clean about the existence of the Blood Angels' gene flaw, why he never spoke of it to the other Primarchs or asked the Emperor for help in fixing the flaw. Sang replies with:
"You know the reason! [...] I will not be responsible for the erasure of the Blood Angels from Imperial history. I will not have a third empty plinth beneath the roof of the Hegemon as my Legion's only memorial!" - Fear to Tread (Novel)
So, from this we can ascertain that the two lost Primarchs weren't traitorous to the Emperor, but instead were born with devastating gene flaw that resulted in the Emperor removing their titles, their legions and removing them from the public. Well, the 11th Primarch, at the very least.
Why the 11th? I'm glad you asked.
We know of the existence of a catacomb-like vault that exists under the Golden Throne known simply as the Dark Cells. Within the Dark Cells' manifesto, there is an entry known only as "Subject XI." I believe that this is the 11th Primarch who wasn't exterminated, but instead imprisoned. Why might that be? It's my belief that the 11th Primarch was born with a gene ability to Warp walk (or at least able to directly interact with, or manifest the Warp in a way that would open the world to the Ruinous Powers), and the Emperor knew the risks of allowing this ability to run free. So bing, bang, boom: He locked the 11th Primarch's ass up under the Golden Throne so the Emperor could keep him close and block his Primarch ability from the Warp. This could have also aided the Emperor in his Webway project, maybe he would use the 11th's ability to learn more about the Warp and circumnavigate it with the Webway.
Also, what if Horus' overall goal at Terra wasn't to make a public spectacle of the Emperor's defeat? I think it's possible that, through his embracing of the Ruinous Powers, Horus was able to overcome the Emperor's mind wipe and remembered the 11th and his ability. What if Horus was sieging Terra in an effort to reach the 11th Primarch and set him free?
Think about it this way: when the Siege was on it's last leg and Horus' defeat was imminent, what was his action? He dropped the shields on the Vengeful Spirit and lured the Emperor to board the ship... To get him away from the Golden Throne.
I'm willing to bet that Horus' last attempt was to lure the Emperor away from the palace and, through the removal of the Emperor's psychic shielding powers, the 11th would sense the Emperor's departure and escape into the Warp. OR if the 11th Primarch could MANIFEST entities from the Warp into the Materium? Maybe entities like a Chaos God or 4? Holy shit... Thankfully Malcador was such a psychic G and held down the Warp in the Emperor's stead.
But yeah, that's my theory on the 11th Primarch. It could be a stretch, it could not be that far fetched. What do you all think?

2023.05.31 20:32 unnaturalSky I trust no one and nothing

I made myself ready to sleep. I checked if my rabbit was okey and went to bed. Today was a very tiring day. So I immediately fell asleep. But only two hours later I woke up again. There was this noise. It was weird. It sounded like some sort of clicking. I thought it was my father who was working on his computer or some mice that were running on the roof again so I ignored it and went back to sleep. That night I had a weird dream. I was in my house but there was dust everywhere. And the house, it was so dark. I am not scared of the dark but the absence of light that was in my dream was truly terrifying. It felt like there was a pressure in the air and that I never would be happy again. I was slowly walking around the house full with scratches over my body. And there I saw something. In the corner. The corner was completely dark but I saw red eyes coming out of it. The last thing I remember is a terrible sound. It was a mixture of a low screech and that clicking sound again.
I woke up with a huge scratch on my cheek. I wasn't that surprised of it because it wasn't the first time that I scratched myself in my sleep. I decided to start my day.
After I ate my breakfast and took a shower I checked on my rabbit. There was a little dried up blood on his paw. I thought he probably had a small cut on his paw so I decided to wash his paw. After cleaning him up I on the rocking chair in the livingroom and scrolled on my phone a bit.
My father came downstairs and asked about the clicking in the night. I told him that I thought that it was him and he looked at me with a confused face. It can't be someone else considering I don't have siblings nor a mother. But we both concluded that it was indeed the mice on the roof again.
Later that day my father went to work for the weekend and I decided to wash the dishes until I heard that weird clicking again. It stopped soon and I went on with my day. In the evening it started again. It started annoying me so I went upstairs to see if I could do something about it. But it didn't come from the roof. So I followed the sound and ended up in my room. I looked around but I was distracted. My rabbit wasn't in his cage. I turned around looking for him. But when I looked at the doorway I saw him. I let out a sight. I calmed down until the clicking started again. But now it was all twisted and slowed down. My heart skipped a beat when I realized that it came from my rabbit. I didn't know what was going on so I just stood there. This sounds weird and stupid but he scared me. A crippling fear came over me when he started to turn into something terrible. His legs became unbelievable long. The body stretched out in an unnatural proportion. And than his mouth. It opened until it was a meter long wide with incredible long and sharp teeth. And there it was again. The sound from my dream. But this time it was so loud that I had to cover my ears, trying to protect my ears. I was trapped in the room. It stood between me and the door ans before I could think he sprinted towards me. I quickly looked around and found a lamp. I took it and smashed it against his head but it did nothing. I jumped out of the window and landed on my ankle. The pain was immense because I was on the third floor. but I didn't waste time and started running again.
I wanted to run towards my friend's house but if I do that I'd bring her in danger as well. So I ran trough the streets but he blocked the way the only other way was towards the woods. So I ran there and climbed in a tree. I don't know where to go nor where it is. So that's why I share this. Not because I want help. This is just a warning. You can't trust anyone, no human, no pet. If there is no update. I am probably dead...or worse.

2023.05.31 19:49 MjolnirPants Jerry and the Goddesses: Part 34

Part 33 on HFY
I saw the figure on the ridge line to our west. He stood there for just a moment before moving away, back down the other side of the hill. I'm not sure if I imagined what I saw, or if some aspect of my relationship with Sarisa or (more likely) Inanna has made my eyes sharper. I weighed the pros and cons of alerting the others.
Pros: possible warning about a potentially serious situation.
Cons: being embarrassed if I was wrong.
I've basically lived the last six years in a state of perpetual embarrassment anyways, so the cons were basically a wash. I walked back inside, acting as if I hadn't seen a damn thing until the door closed behind me, at which point I rushed down the stairs, past the two hard-looking bearded dudes who could have been Gary's adult kids, if he'd had any and into the bowels of the Agency safehouse.
"Guys, Astoram's here. Or at least, his little cult is. Maybe. I saw one of the greasers just now, watching the safehouse from the ridge west of us."
All eyes turned to me. Sarisa frowned and then added, "Sixteen cult members, at least. They're holed up in the women's high school in Paghman, hosted by a local Taliban commander."
Inanna turned to her in surprise. "That was easy. Have you broken his pall of ignorance?"
"No," Sarisa shook her head and started gathering up supplies and stuffing them into packs. "Local gossip?" I asked and she favored me with a smile, "They do tend to stick out around here, don't they?"
"Well, so do we," Gary added, grabbing an M2010 off the rack and tossing it to me, then slinging his own custom M4 over his shoulder before grabbing a couple of bags and stuffing magazines in them. "We're going after them?" I asked, checking that the weapon was safe and empty, then catching a magazine he tossed me.
"We're going on the roof," Gary responded, "And if we see another, you're taking him down. We can't leave until Sara figures out exactly where we're going, and that seems likely to take a while."
"Won't that let them know we're on to them?" I asked as I loaded the magazine, chambered a round and the re-safed it.
"No," Sarisa answered for Gary, "The locals are quite unhappy about the obvious Americans being here. Someone's already taken a pot-shot at a few of them. They think it's multiple shooters, but it's really one of the guards at the school, shooting at them during his downtime. Achmed is not happy about playing host to the great Satan."
"It wouldn't really matter, anyways," Inanna added, hunching over her hands and frowning in concentration. "They know we're coming, else they wouldn't be here at all. It's probably coincidence that they're this close to us, but I'm not surprised they'd be watching holdover safehouses for us. Astoram could have stuck to locals if he wanted to set up another cult here. The fact that the greasers are here means he's gunning for us."
Gary handed me a plate carrier which I quickly donned and began adjusting the side straps to my slight frame. It took a lot of adjusting. While I did it, I peered over Inanna's shoulder to see what she was doing, but couldn't make it out. After a moment, she beckoned Sarisa over and both of them hunched over her hands. I still couldn't see what they were doing.
I got the carrier cinched down tight. Which was, like, the first time ever. I wondered if this one was a smaller size, but I'd never seen a tag on one, so I didn't know how to check. Gary was already kitted up with his rifle, his own armor and a spotting scope on a tripod. I nodded and he jerked his head towards the door, "Let's go."
"Wait," Inanna said. I turned to her and saw she was holding a tiny little avatar of her own. Unlike Inanna's unbuttoned ACU top and tight jeans, the avatar was wearing some BDSM looking outfit that left nothing to the imagination and was holding a giant rifle that I thought was one of the big .50 caliber ones, but couldn't be sure. The avatar blew me a kiss, gestured at her crotch and then pumped her free fist while thrusting her hips back and forth.
"Uhh," I said, "So she's an avatar of sniping, right?"
"Yup," Inanna confirmed, "With Sarisa's help, of course. She's the one who knows how to make avatars that can pass on knowledge like that."
"So I just eat her, then and I'll be a master sniper?" I asked. The avatar had moved her rifle to between her legs and was grinding on it in a way that would be provocative for a life-sized woman, but looked a little ridiculous.
"Well..."
I met Inanna's eyes and saw a mischievous sparkle there. "Well what?" I asked, my voice full of trepidation.
"You don't eat my avatars, Jerry."
"So what do I do?"
"You fuck them."
I gawked at her. "But she's like five, six inches tall!" I objected, "My... Thing is bigger than that!"
Kathy snorted, "I've seen you naked, dude. Your 'thing' is bigger than my forearm."
"No it's..." I trailed off because, yeah, that was Inanna's latest kink; she'd been making it grow for a couple weeks now, and while a certain part of me really enjoyed using and -total transparency- looking at it, it was becoming a bother.
Look, it's really awkward, alright? It's always in the way, and I don't have any hair on my inner thighs left because I'd taken to taping the damned thing down to keep it out of the way. I could barely even lay on my stomach any more. It's not funny.
My instinctive denial notwithstanding, the point remained. I looked at Inanna with confusion plain on my features. In response, she sat the avatar down on the floor. She grew, but not by much, stopping when she reached about three feet tall.
"Well?" I said, "Why did it stop? Is there some other way?"
The avatar clapped her hands, then shook her head slowly, grinning. She slung the rifle onto her back and then rushed forward and began humping my leg like an excited dog.
"It'll fit," Inanna assured me.
"It'll kill her!" I objected. I shook my leg a bit, trying to get her to stop, but she just reached up and grabbed a hold of me through my pants. I squawked in surprise as the tiny hand clamped down.
"That's kind of the point, hun."
"What?!" I asked, confused.
"They're not really alive or aware, in the way you're imagining," Sarisa said, "They're like chatbots on the internet. They can engage in a handful of behaviors that they're pre-programmed with, but that's it. In this case, she's programmed to, well, get some."
"That's kinda what I figured, but..." I sighed in exasperation. "Fine, whatever, can I at least get a little privacy?" Inanna gestured towards other door in the room, which led to the two guards' bunks, and was currently unoccupied. The field agent who'd 'graciously' (read: under fictional orders from his boss, courtesy of Sarisa's influence on a CIA email server) hosted us here raised a hand. "Uh, after he's done, would you mind if I, uh..."
Inanna gave him a level look and both Kathy and Sarisa expressed their disgust at the request as I worked in vain to get the avatar off my leg. She was insistent and stubborn as hell. Eventually, Inanna said "Just pick her up and throw her over your shoulder, Jerry, she'll get the hint."
So I grabbed her under her arms and lifted up. I heard Kathy make a disgusted sound as I did, and I fully understood why. The avatar felt like a kid. She stopped fighting me almost immediately and clapped her hands in delight. I tossed her over my shoulder, feeling like a pedophile and we went into the other room.
Look, I'm not going to describe what happened because this was sketchy as hell and made me seriously uncomfortable. I mean, even by the standards of embarrassment and discomfort I'd gotten used to in the past few years. I was actually a little grateful for the ridiculous outfit and the even more ridiculously exaggerated proportions Inanna had given her, because anything else would have been too childlike for me to even consider it. Gross.
It wasn't anything worth describing, in any case. As soon as we started, she vanished in a burst of light and I felt that same odd sense of familiarity descend over me. I quickly got buttoned (and taped, sigh) back up and returned. The agent was sulking in the corner, his face a bright red. I ignored him.
"Inanna, I love you, but I swear upon all that's sacred, if you ever do that again and feel the need to make the avatar child sized, I will begin seriously questioning the morality of your libido." My face was a stone mask, and she balked for a second before her brow furrowed.
"I thought being smaller would be hot. Like, you know, making it tighter?"
"No. I feel disgusting, now. I prefer the life-size you, who reminds me in exactly zero ways of a little kid."
Kathy must have shared my feelings on the matter, because she was glaring daggers at Inanna. Sarisa looked shocked and Gary looked away, patiently examining the wall.
"Honestly, Jerry, the thought of the avatar looking like a child never really occurred to me. I... I'm sorry, babe. I promise, I'll never do that again." She moved to my side and laid her head on my shoulder, putting her arms around me. "I'm really sorry, I really never even considered that..."
I patted her back gently and kissed her on the top of her head, "I forgive you, but we gotta move," I said. "Are you coming along?"
She looked up, and I could actually see that her eyes were getting misty. Wow. I didn't think my recrimination would have this much effect on her; she was usually incorrigible. She nodded, "Yes, but you're the shooter and Gary's spotting. I'm just observing."
I nodded. I expected as much, because Gary had been making a point of having me do more shooting ever since Ethiopia. It was training, as much as it was getting me to actually pull some weight when shit hit the fan.
We headed up the stairs, me taking up the rear. Directly in front of me, Inanna swapped her ACU top for a plate carrier of her own (as opposed to simply adding a plate carrier on top) and swapped her tight jeans for assless chaps. Now there was the Inanna I knew. It might be a familiar butt, and one I've explored every nook and cranny of (or, nook and fanny as the case may be, heh heh, okay, fine, I'll stop now, yeesh. I was just cracking a joke. Get it? Cracking? Damn, tough crowd...), and I may have been a bit peeved at her at the moment, but I couldn't help but get lost in staring, until she abruptly stopped near the top step and I went face-first into it.
Oh crap, my tape came free.
I adjusted everything with a deep sigh while Inanna gave me a little smile that was equal parts apology and mischief over her shoulder. I was not amused. I wondered if forgiveness could be rescinded.
We made it the rest of the way without incident. I got set up on the roof facing the ridge line, Gary beside me. Inanna crouched down next to me, and I somehow knew that she would be invisible to anyone but us. Gary ranged the hill and whistled, "Nine hunnerd forty three yards. Damn, Jerry, those are some good eyes you've got, if you could make out that much from here." I shrugged slightly.
"My eyes have been getting better ever since I met these two," I gestured at Inanna. "That's mostly Sarisa, not me," she added, "Humans she's interacted with while manifesting have gotten better eyesight several times in the past. Something about perception and learning, I don't remember how she explained it. But humans I've interacted with get really good at registering threats, too. So it probably wasn't just her."
Regardless of who was responsible, I understood Gary's surprise. Right now, without a figure to focus on, the ridge line was so far off that I couldn't even explain how I'd spotted the figure, let alone recognized his outfit. But I was quite sure of what I'd seen, so I tried to just accept it.
We stayed on that roof for hours, spelling each other. Gary would spend thirty minutes scanning the ridge line with his variable-zoom spotter scope while Inanna took me inside to simultaneously express her remorse for her inadvertent blunder, let me reassure her that all was forgiven, and give me a little exercise to keep the blood flowing. Then, I'd take my turn, peering through my fixed-magnification scope on my rifle or just squinting with my 'mark one eyeballs', as Gary called them, while Gary strode around on the roof, swinging his arms and doing pushups and other manly things.
Though it came as a surprise, it was also a bit of a relief when, as the sun was getting low, one of the burly, bearded guards came up just as Gary was about to let me take my turn. It was Drake; and he and Gary had recognized each other when we first got here.
"Hey man, you busy?" Drake asked as Gary stood to greet him. "Not for another half hour, why?"
Drake looked at Gary for a moment, then at the roof beneath his feet, and then back. Something unsaid and probably very manly and operator-ly passed between them. Too manly for me to understand. Gary raised his eyebrows, muttered, "Thought you'd never ask," and both turned to head back down, leaving me in my confusion.
But then Inanna cleared things up. She sprung up and ran over to them. "Wait!"
They turned, and she whispered briefly in Drake's ear before giving him a kiss on the cheek. Gary then got the same treatment and she returned. I opened my mouth to ask for some clarity, and then it hit me. Why would Inanna kiss them on the cheek? It was a blessing, of course. Because they were about to do something in her portfolio. Not something war-like, if you catch my drift.
"Was that a moment?" Inanna grinned. "Like in that movie," I added, "With the guy from The Sopranos and Brad Pitt, when the hit man and Julia Roberts are in the diner?" She nodded, "Hell yeah, and it's about damn time, too. He's the only one of our little group who hasn't gotten any since all this shit started."
"Well, him and Ixy," I said, peering through the scope at the same suspiciously-shaped bush I'd checked out a thousand times already.
"Are you kidding me? Ixy has a harem in his little extra-planar den. At least half the time he's not visible, he's getting some."
"Huh," I said, "It never even occurred to me. So what are his harem, like, the souls of dead Australopithecus women?"
"Maybe the souls of dead female hentai fans would be into that," Inanna corrected, "But as far as I know, it's all ancient devas."
"Like angels?" I asked. This was new.
"Sort of, yeah. No 'wheels within wheels' though, most devas look like people, or sometimes animals or inanimate objects. I've got about two, three hundred of mine still moving about in the world."
"So are they like avatars?"
"No, not really. None of us really know where they come from. But they periodically appear or vanish. When they appear, they always attach themselves to one of the gods and take on aspects of them. Each one has a particular focus. For example, I've got a deva of motherly love currently living a quiet life in Belgium. She's got great-grandkids, and none of her family suspect she's anything but the world's greatest mother. I've got another deva of unarmed combat mastery, Han. He's a trip; very hip. Stays up-to-date on pop culture."
"Do you think any of your or Sarisa's devas could help us?"
"I can't command them, if that's what you're asking. The attach themselves to me, and will almost always respect my choices and fulfill requests if I ask them, but there's nothing forcing them to. And I've already asked a couple, but they're all busy with their own thing or uninterested." She shrugged and blew out a long breath. "It's always a little weird when they say 'no', but it happens. Especially when conflict with other gods is involved. I didn't really expect any to want to help us."
"Huh," I said again. "Do you think that any-" I stopped. I'd just caught a flash of movement on the hills. I glued my right eye to the scope and kept my left eye open to guide it to the right spot.
"Got him," I said as the tiny figure in the black leather jacket and white t-shirt came into focus. "Can you spot for me?"
"Hell yeah, I'm not interrupting Gary," she said as she laid down by his scope. She got it lined up on the figure. "Nine thirty nine yards, wind moving..." she licked a finger a held it up, "say, two and a half knots, directly on LOS."
I did the math in my head. The wind would reduce the bullet drop over this long a range. Using formulas I hadn't known that morning, I quickly calculated a solution and dialed it into my optics. They didn't quite go far enough, but there will mill dots running along the crosshairs. I settled the second dot down from where the hairs met over the man's torso as he moved. I watched for a moment, timing his speed, then rolled forward of him by five and a quarter mill dots. I noted some quirks in the ground and adjusted to five and a half, then lowered my aim just a bit.
I sucked in a deep breath and waited for him to cross a specific rock. As soon as he did, I let out half the breath, squeezed the trigger until the rifle bucked in my hands, and then let the rest out. I kept my right eye on my scope, and watched as the man crossed the point I'd fired at and then abruptly collapsed. I saw his body moving weakly for a few seconds, and then it went still.
"Nice!" Inanna said with a hearty smack on my butt. I winced. She tended to smack really hard.
"Think they'll send someone out to look for him?" I asked.
"Oh yeah, without a doubt. Get comfortable, we're gonna be here a while yet."
I sighed and settled in. After about an hour (I didn't begrudge Gary the extra time), Gary returned, looking cheerful and chipper and a bit more relaxed than usual.
"Inanna, whatever was in that kiss was better'n a fifty-fifty mix of molly and viagra," he announced as he took her spot. "I truly do appreciate it, darlin'."
Inanna smiled and gave him another kiss. "Have another for next time. I'll make sure Drake is ready the next time you're off."
Gary grinned at her, and then turned to me. "Well, I thought I heard a shot a while ago. Did you get one?"
"Yeah, we're waiting for the search party, now." Gary grinned wider, "You see, this kinda cold-blooded shit is why infantry grunts like me just fuckin' hate snipers."
He settled down and got his eye on the scope, then added, "'Cept when they're on our side, of course."
"Of course," I agreed. After the sun set, we added night-vision modules to our optics. It occurred to me that, considering the type of people Astoram tended to attract, the dead guy's companions might not be in much of a hurry to check on his well-being. In fact, they likely wouldn't even care where he was until they began to get worried that his absence might bode poorly for them.
It was going to be a long night.

2023.05.31 19:46 OvremployedSnowflake (vent) Man they say the first few years of investing is rough but....

Coupled with my complete lapse in responsibility, a break up, a cross country move, and a handful of nightmare tenants/housing issues, this past late 2021-now has been horrible. I bought 5 new SFH rentals in September of 2021. I already owned 2 SFHs that were doing well. I didn't pay prorated 2021 or 2022 property taxes because I was strapped for funds so I let it slide but now Im STILL strapped for funds and I owe about 12k per year so..I owe around 20k in property taxes.
One of the houses I bought had a section 8 tenant in it that was awful, finally got her out in April of 2022. Cost me 10k to get the place rent ready again. Moved a new tenant in and he only paid rent twice. Took me a year to get him out. So now I owe 4k in rent ready fees again since that tenant didn't treat the place nicely either. (total expenses on this house for the year was close to 16k and I only received two rent payments of $800...)
I had another house that needed an expensive 6k roof repair in April 2022 that I was barely getting funding to support after having to drop 10k on the other place. That house was vacant for almost an entire year because I couldn't get funding quick enough. Someone broke in and stole the furnace and hot water heater too so, add another 4k to that tab. Due to the house being vacant for an entire year issues like plumbing and a random raccoon in the chimney crept up and cost me another 3-4k. Oh and on top of it the city is coming around saying the house isn't registered as a rental and I need to pay an $800 fine or do a rental inspection (and be prepared to fix anything they say needs to be fixed within 30 days) so I had to take the fine. (total expenses on the house was also close to 15-16k and I had not received any rent until about two months ago..)
Today I paid 9k towards my tax burden and I'm just so exhausted. I do have property management but they nickel and dime the shit out of me. Can't even transfer them the 9k through my bank without them wanting $30 for god knows what.

Note to self: pay your property taxes. Never use rental income to keep your personal shit afloat unless you're going to die.

If you're curious on a general breakdown of the properties: I own 6 houses in full. 1 house I have a H Loan on and the mortgage is $1200 a month on that. I really thought I set myself up for success by owning these places in full and my gross rental income is $6500 a month. My NOI *should* be around $3000. But with repair after repair, city red tape, taxes, etc. I'm struggling.
I actually now have two full-time jobs (combined salary of 310k for the past month, before that it was 190k) and a side gig watching dogs on Rover that brings in 5k a month consistently. My personal revenue is now 21k a month. My expenses are around 6k a month. For the majority of the past year my personal revenue was 16k so I only had 6-8k a month left over to put into these places but also, I had personal cc debt of 26k and I *just* paid it off. If you're wondering why so much cc debt, I already had 10k in cc debt from some car+pet related expenses when I broke up with my long term boyfriend and my expenses skyrocketed as I left him with everything and had to start over completely from scratch. My rent went from $800 a month to $2300 for example. I then moved from Michigan to The Bay for 6 months, then moved again to Portland OR.
So now I have no cc debt, I've covered all my rent ready fees, finally have tenants with good credit and no court records of eviction, and after paying 8k on property taxes I still owe 12k. I'm not nearly in as bad of a place as I was last year but paying off debt takes a loooong time. What other level headed person makes between 16-21k a month and has rental income to some degree and still has debt? After I pay off my debt Im going to have to aggressively rebuild my savings too. It's just a never ending cycle once you get in debt so obviously, don't get yourself in it.

Thanks for reading.

2023.05.31 19:22 M_Tootles "Cargos, Slatterns & Butchery" with Helya & Grisel (Spoilers Extended)

This post is part of a series looking at the massive amount of 'rhyming' (and occasionally rhyming) recursivity I believe exists between (a) the homecoming of Petyr Baelish to the Fingers and (b) the homecoming of Theon Greyjoy to Pyke.
While this series/post can be read simply as a study 'for its own sake' of the curious recursion between these storylines, it is my belief that the 'rhyming' explored here between the stories of Petyr and Theon exists (at least in part) to foreshadow that, like Theon, Petyr Littlefinger, is (among other things) a scion of ironborn kings, because Petyr is Hoare-ish: I.e. because Petyr's blood is (in some part) the blood of the ironborn kings of House Hoare of Orkmont and, later, Harrenhal.
You can find an index of every post I've made on the topic of a Hoare-ish Littlefinger (including every post in this sub-series) [HERE].
Even if I'm wrong about Littlefinger's lineage, the 'rhyming' recursivity between the homecomings of Theon and Petyr detailed in this series remains, and certainly merits attention.
NOTE: In what follows, all uncited quotes are from ASOS Sansa VI, which describes Petyr's homecoming to his "Drearfort" tower of the 'Smallest Finger', or ACOK Theon I, which describes Theon's homecoming to "drear" Pyke.
As in past posts, I sometimes use "→" as shorthand for "'prefigures' and/or 'informs' and/or 'is reworked by' and/or 'finds a recursive rhyme in'.
As in: ACOK Theon I → ASOS Sansa VI.
This post picks up straight-away from where Part 8 left off. You can read Part 8 [HERE].
If you want to begin at the beginning, Part 1 is [HERE].

The Myraham's Prophetic Cargo

After Theon makes port, the captain of the Myraham announces his cargo to the people on the docks of Lordport and we read about the offloading of the Myraham:
"We're out of Oldtown," the captain called down, "bearing apples and oranges, wines from the Arbor, feathers from the Summer Isles. I have pepper, woven leathers, a bolt of Myrish lace, mirrors for milady, a pair of Oldtown woodharps sweet as any you ever heard." The gangplank descended with a creak and a thud. "And I've brought your heir back to you."
Most of what we read there seems to be reworked in and around Littlefinger's homecoming in ASOS Sansa VI, when the Merling King brings the Dreadfort its heir, Littlefinger, as well as the seeming heir to Winterfell, Sansa. This begins with the Arbor wine and fruit we see off-loaded from the Merling King:
Oswell made two more trips out to the Merling King to offload provisions. Among the loads he brought ashore were several casks of wine. Petyr poured Sansa a cup, as promised. …
… The wine was very fine; an Arbor vintage, she thought. It tasted of oak and fruit and hot summer nights, the flavors blossoming in her mouth like flowers opening to the sun. She only prayed that she could keep it down. Lord Petyr was being so kind, she did not want to spoil it all by retching on him.
… "Grisel," he called to the old woman, "bring some food up. … Oswell's brought some oranges and pomegranates from the King." …
Grisel reappeared…, balancing a large platter. … There were apples and pears and pomegranates, some sad-looking grapes, a huge blood orange.
Besides the straight repetition of Arbor wine, oranges, apples, and heirs, the repeated Oldtown motif is baldly reworked by Sansa's description of the wine, which is patently Oldtown-summer-esque, per the only substantive pre-AFFC description of Oldtown, which associates it with hot, fruity summer nights:
"King Maekar's summer was hotter than this one, and near as long. … [T]he heat was fierce while it lasted. Oldtown… came alive only by night. … I remember the smells of those nights, my lord—perfume and sweat, melons ripe to bursting, peaches and pomegranates, nightshade and moonbloom." (AGOT Eddard V)
The Myraham's "mirrors for milady" prefigure Sansa being figuratively groomed by Petyr and literally grooming herself in Petyr's Eyrie after he takes over:
When Gretchel fetched her Lysa's silvered looking glass, the color seemed just perfect with Alayne's mass of dark brown hair. (AFFC Alayne I)
The Myraham's "woodharps sweet as any you ever heard" presage Sansa being attacked by Marillion, whose "voice was strong and sweet", (AFFC Sansa I) after he sings a song (about blowjobs?) called "Milady's Supper" (supper a la the Myraham-ish fruit Sansa eats for supper when she lands) during Petyr's wedding bedding:
Lady Lysa's singer launched into a bawdy version of "Milady's Supper"….
The Myraham's "woven leathers" and "Myrish lace" are reworked into the "laces unlaced" i.e. unwoven during said wedding:
By the time they had gotten him into the tower and out of his clothes, the other women were flushed, with laces unlaced, kirtles crooked, and skirts in disarray.
That it's a "bolt of Myrish lace" is interesting: After Sansa boards the Merling King, she sees a singular "bolt" from a crossbow strike Dontos, and then two more:
Lothor Brune dipped his torch. Three men stepped to the gunwale, raised crossbows, fired. One bolt took Dontos in the chest as he looked up…. The others ripped into throat and belly. (ASOS Sansa V)
Three crossbow bolts? What does that remind us if not… a Myrish crossbow:
"The king is playing with his new crossbow," Tyrion said. Ridding himself of Joffrey had required only an ungainly Myrish crossbow that threw three quarrels at a time…. (ACOK Tyrion VI)
What about the Myraham's "pepper"? I suspect this gets box-checked first by Sansa trying not to "retch" as she is off-loaded along with the wine with which Littlefinger tries to settle her tummy, as just two chapters later peppers are tightly linked to "retching" of the sort Sansa feels like doing:
[Tyrion] found himself on his knees retching… that double helping of fried eggs cooked up with onions and fiery Dornish peppers. (ASOS Tyrion X)
GRRM seems to play off the "pepper" motif in other ways, as well. Consider that the gathering to meet the Myraham and the shouted questions that prompt her captain to announce her cargo—
A handful of Lordsport merchants had gathered to meet the ship. They shouted questions as the Myraham was tying up.
—get reworked by Petyr's household all gathering "to meet" the Merling King and by their peppering one another with questions:
Servants emerged from the tower to meet them; a thin old woman and a fat middle-aged one, two ancient white-haired men, and a girl of two or three with a sty on one eye. When they recognized Lord Petyr they knelt on the rocks. "My household," he said. "I don't know the child. Another of Kella's bastards, I suppose. She pops one out every few years."
She's a "popper", then, in case we didn't catch that retching → peppers. (This also reworks Theon "popping one off" with the captain's daughter, who is in many ways reworked by Kella, as will be discussed below.)
… [Petyr]… gave the old woman a kiss on the cheek and grinned at the younger one. "Who fathered this one, Kella?"
The fat woman laughed. "I can't rightly say, m'lord. I'm not one for telling them no."
"And all the local lads are grateful, I am quite sure."
"It is good to have you home, my lord," said one old man. … "How long will you be in residence?"
"As short a time as possible, Bryen, have no fear. Is the place habitable just now, would you say?"
"If we knew you was coming we would have laid down fresh rushes, m'lord," said the crone. "There's a dung fire burning."
"Nothing says home like the smell of burning dung." Petyr turned to Sansa. "Grisel was my wet nurse, but she keeps my castle now. Umfred's my steward, and Bryen—didn't I name you captain of the guard the last time I was here?"
"You did, my lord.…"
… Petyr gestured toward the fat woman. "Kella minds my vast herds. How many sheep do I have at present, Kella?"
A gathering, and questions, questions, questions, as when Theon docks.
Recall that Bryen and Umfred come from shore to offload Sansa (who's just been promised a cup of wine to help with her upset "tummy") from the Merling King's rowboat:
The two old men waded out up to their thighs to lift Sansa from the boat so she would not get her skirts wet.
This reworks the "shorehands… off-loading… casks of wine" from a Tyroshi trader docked with the Myraham—
[Theon] spied a Tyroshi trading galley off-loading…
Shorehands rolled casks of wine off the Tyroshi trader, fisherfolk cried the day's catch, children ran and played. A priest in the seawater robes of the Drowned God was leading a pair of horses along the pebbled shore, while above him a slattern leaned out a window in the inn, calling out to some passing Ibbenese sailors.
—which itself prefigures the above-quoted off-loading of the Merling King (when "Oswell made two more trips out to the Merling King to offload provisions" including "several casks of wine", from which Petyr immediately "poured Sansa a cup, as promised").

Kella & The Slattern

What about that "slattern lean[ing] out a window" to greet "some passing… sailors" while "children ran and played"? I submit that she is one of several motifs from Theon's homecoming prefiguring Petyr's servant Kella. I'll explain.
Consider that Petyr's servant Kella has many bastards i.e. children, popping one out every few years:
"I don't know the child. Another of Kella's bastards, I suppose. She pops one out every few years."
We only see one; presumably the others are off somewhere, running and playing, perhaps.
Kella happily greets Petyr as he comes ashore, much as Lordsport's slattern "call[s] out to some passing Ibbenese sailors". Note that the sailors on the Merling King are likewise 'passing' — passing through:
"From here the King turns east for Braavos. Without us."
Consider most of all that Kella's something of a slattern herself: She's "not one for telling them no".
"I can't rightly say, m'lord. I'm not one for telling them no."
"And all the local lads are grateful, I am quite sure."
Indeed, something Lysa says pretty clearly codes Kella as a verbatim "slattern", underlining the recursion:
"How would you like to spend your life on that bleak shore, surrounded by slatterns and sheep pellets?" (ASOS Sansa VII)
So I think the vignette with the slattern and the children in Lordsport pretty plainly prefigures Kella. But I think she's prefigured by two more pieces of Theon's homecoming.

Kella & The Captain's Daughter

Keeping in mind that Kella has a bunch of bastards ("she pops one out every few years) and that she's "not one for telling them no", consider also that she is (a) literally 'with child' — or rather, with a child—
a girl of two or three with a sty on one eye
—that she's (b) "fat"—
"Who fathered this one, Kella?"
The fat woman laughed.
—and that she's (c) coded as a bit stupid:
"Kella minds my vast herds. How many sheep do I have at present, Kella?"
She had to think a moment. "Three and twenty, m'lord. There was nine and twenty, but Bryen's dogs killed one and we butchered some others and salted down the meat."
All like Theon's "captain's daughter".
The captain's daughter is "plump", as Kella is "fat":
The girl was a shade plump for his taste…
She is likely pregnant with Theon's bastard, a la Kella the bastard-popper.
She tells Theon…
"You can put it in me again, if it please you…"
…and accedes to his request for a blowjob, so she's "not one for telling them no."
She thereby helps Theon 'pop one off', a la Kella "pop[ping] one out".
Like Kella, she seems a bit stupid:
She looked rather stupid when she smiled, but he had never required a woman to be clever.
The stupid girl did not seem to be listening.
She… learned quickly for such a stupid girl….
She looked at him stupidly, so he left her there.
And finally, she offers to work in Theon's castle—
I'd work in your castle, milord.
—just as Kella works for Petyr.

Kella: The Spreading Patch of the Smallest Finger?

Besides the "slattern" and the captain's daughter, I suspect Kella may also riff on — of all things — the "spreading patches" of "lichen" on "wet" Pyke as Theon sails by:
[Pyke was] wet by the same salt waves, festooned with the same spreading patches of dark green lichen, speckled by the droppings of the same seabirds.
Get it? A spreading 'patch'? In combination with "lichen" a la "licking" and Pyke being "wet"? And not just wet, but "wet by… salt waves", when as we know from the captain's daughter, semen tastes "salty", "like the sea". It's like Pyke is being described as a turned-on "slattern" with her legs spread.
A Hoare, we might say.
This connects to Kella, specifically because of her name: Kella is a near anagram for "kale", a dark green plant, like the "dark green lichen".
Actually, the name Kella may have anothere precursor in Theon's story: "Qalen", the maester Theon asks Helya about upon his arrival at Pyke:
"And what of Maester Qalen, where is he?"
Qalen would be pronounced Kalen. Qalen → Kalen → Kale → Kela → Kella. Anyway…

Grisel & The Captain's Daughter

Something similar is going on with Petyr's servant Grisel, the "thin old woman" who was his wet nurse but who "keeps [his] castle now":
"Grisel was my wet nurse, but she keeps my castle now.
Grisel is similarly prefigured by two people from Theon's homecoming, including first the captain's daughter who wants to work in Theon's castle as Grisel works in Petyr's "castle".
Consider first that Grisel, like the captain's daughter, seems slightly stupid (but eager to please), as she fails to grasp Petyr's sarcasm and takes his derisive joke about gulls' eggs and seaweed soup as an order:
"Ah, cold salt mutton. I must be home. When I break my fast on gulls' eggs and seaweed soup, I'll be certain of it."
"If you like, m'lord," said the old woman Grisel.
Lord Petyr made a face.
Then there is the captain daughter's resume:
"I'd work in your castle, milord. I can clean fish and bake bread and churn butter. Father says my peppercrab stew is the best he's ever tasted. You could find me a place in your kitchens and I could make you peppercrab stew."
This surely prefigures what we're told about Grisel making a sea-based soup of her own (i.e. the just mentioned "seaweed soup"), baking bread, and churning butter for Petyr:
Grisel reappeared before he could say more, balancing a large platter. She set it down between them. … The old woman had brought a round of bread as well, and a crock of butter.
Grisel climbed up to the bedchamber to serve the lord and lady a tray of morning bread, with butter, honey, fruit, and cream.
Where Grisel used to be Petyr's wet nurse, Theon suckles the captain daughter's nipple as if she's a wet nurse:
Theon's finger circled one heavy teat, spiraling in toward the fat brown nipple. … He took her nipple in his mouth….
"You can put it in me again, if it please you," she whispered in his ear as he sucked.
And finally, where Theon kisses the captain's daughter on the ear—
[Theon] drew the captain's daughter close and kissed her on her ear.
—Littlefinger kisses Grisel on the cheek:
Oswell and Lothor splashed their way ashore, as did Littlefinger himself. He gave the old woman a kiss on the cheek and grinned at the younger one.

Helya & Grisel (& Gretchel)

Grisel also rhymes with and reworks Helya, who keeps Balon's castle:
A bentback old crone in a shapeless grey dress approached him warily. "M'lord, I am sent to show you to chambers."
"And who are you?"
"Helya, who keeps this castle for your lord father."
Get it? "Helya and Grisel", a la "Hansel and Gretel".
(Gretel is a variant of "Greta". "Grisel" sounds like gristle, whereas in Hansel and Gretel the witch is trying to fatten Hansel up — she don't want no stringy meat! Note the thematic symmetry as well: By treating Hansel kindly and feeding him delicious treats, the witch is essentially "grooming" him for her own benefit/consumption, as Theon and Petyr groom the captain's daughter and Sansa, respectively, for their own benefit. Finally, note that "pebbles" are a key motif in Hansel and Gretel, prefiguring the proliferation of "pebbles" on Pyke, the 'rhyming' "pellets" on Petyr's Finger, and the isle of "Pebble" that leads to Petyr's Finger.)
The two "old" castle keepers neatly invert one another. Consider Grisel's comments about the old rushes and fire in Petyr's tower:
"If we knew you was coming we would have laid down fresh rushes, m'lord," said the crone. "There's a dung fire burning."
"Nothing says home like the smell of burning dung."
That's a recursive reversal of Helya's (lack of) preparation for Theon's visit: Where Grisel has a fire going even though she didn't know Petyr was coming, and where she proactively apologizes for not changing the rushes, telling him "we would have laid down fresh rushes… if we knew you were coming", Helya neither lit a fire nor changed the heavily foregrounded "old and brittle" rushes in the rooms Theon is given—
"I'll have a basin of hot water and a fire in this hearth," he told the crone. "See that they light braziers in the other rooms to drive out some of the chill. And gods be good, get someone in here at once to change these rushes."
—despite having ample forewarning of his coming:
It was not as though they had no word of his arrival. Robb had sent ravens from Riverrun, and… Jason Mallister had sent his own birds to Pyke….
The joke is underlined by the introduction of "Gretchel" — Gretel with a borrowed H from Helya/Hansel — who fetches washbasins of water (which, see below), "la[ys] a fire in the hearth" and "tend[s] to the fire", brings food and discusses food storage in Petyr's Eyrie in AFFC Sansa I & Alayne I. (In other words, she 'keeps his castle.')

'Rhyming' Interiors

That's just the beginning of the reversals in the many recursions between Theon's lodgings at Pyke and Sansa's in the Drearfort.
Where Helya leads Theon to his rooms on his orders—
"Show me to my chambers, woman," he commanded. Bowing stiffly, [Helya] led him across the headland to the bridge. …
Whenever he'd imagined his homecoming, he had always pictured himself returning to the snug bedchamber in the Sea Tower, where he'd slept as a child. Instead the old woman led him to the Bloody Keep.
—it's Petyr who leads the way into his tower, casually inviting Grisel (and everyone else) to follow him:
"If you like, m'lord," said the old woman Grisel.
Lord Petyr made a face. "Come, let's see if my hall is as dreary as I recall." He led them up the strand…
Petyr jokes about his hall being "dreary", and perhaps it is, but while it's "small" and "even smaller" within, his tower is also home to his servants, and hence very well lived-in.
Within, the tower seemed even smaller. An open stone stair wound round the inside wall, from undercroft to roof. Each floor was but a single room. The servants lived and slept in the kitchen at ground level, sharing the space with a huge brindled mastiff and a half-dozen sheep-dogs. Above that was a modest hall, and higher still the bedchamber.
(Note that the "mastiff", which we see as Petyr leads Grisel in, recalls Helya bowing "stiffly" before leading Theon to his rooms.)
This sharply reverses the situation Theon finds at Pyke, when he's deposited not in a single room shared by a bunch of people who've lived in it forever and warmed by a hearth with a burning fire, a la Sansa, nor in the "snug bedchamber" in the Sea Tower he'd anticipated (which sounds like Littlefinger's little "tower" by the sea), but in the Bloody Keep, in a whole-ass "suite" of large but "chilly", even "cold" rooms with incredibly high ceilings — rooms which haven't even been opened, much less lived-in, for "years", and which are the very definition of "dreary":
The halls here were larger and better furnished, if no less cold nor damp. Theon was given a suite of chilly rooms with ceilings so high that they were lost in gloom. [Omitted but see below.]
[Omitted but see below.] It was not fear of ghosts that made him glance about with distaste. The wall hangings were green with mildew, the mattress musty-smelling and sagging, the rushes old and brittle. Years had come and gone since these chambers had last been opened. The damp went bone deep. "I'll have a basin of hot water and a fire in this hearth," he told the crone. See that they light braziers in the other rooms to drive out some of the chill. And gods be good, get someone in here at once to change these rushes."
A ton of the motifs here (including the omitted stuff, which I'll return to) get recycled and reworked in Petyr's tower.
Most obviously, Theon's request for hot water prefigures Sansa's request for a hot bath:
"Might I have a hot bath as well?" asked Sansa.
"I'll have Kella draw some water, m'lady."
Note that Kella fulfills the request, not Grisel. This 'fits', as it's not Helya who brings Theon's water, but "two thralls".
Note also that Sansa requests her bath after thinking…
She desperately needed a bath and a change of clothes.
…whereas Theon changes his clothes immediately after the quoted passages.
Slightly less obviously, the "wall hangings [that] were green with mildew" are reworked by Petyr's own green 'wall hanging': his grandfather's shield, which is painted with a "light green field" and which "hung… above the hearth". The "mildew" is reworked by the fact that the paint is "cracked and flaking" i.e. flawed. And maybe also by the "light green field", since a field grows crops which get milled and which get dewy.

Brittle Bryen's Brigantine, Brindled Mastiff, & Old Blind Dog

As mentioned, the motif of unchanged rushes from Theon's homecoming recurs when Petyr comes home. But Petyr's homecoming also lexically riffs on Theon's rushes being quote-unquote "old and brittle" by giving us Bryen in "brigantine" who is very "old" but not, seemingly, brittle, as he still walks watches, not with his "old blind dog", but with a "brindled mastiff":
"It is good to have you home, my lord," said one old man. He looked to be at least eighty, but he wore a studded brigantine and a longsword at his side. …
"Bryen—didn't I name you captain of the guard the last time I was here?"
"You did, my lord. You said you'd be getting some more men too, but you never did. Me and the dogs stand all the watches."
Sansa found Bryen's old blind dog in her little alcove beneath the steps…
The servants lived and slept in the kitchen at ground level, sharing the space with a huge brindled mastiff and a half-dozen sheep-dogs.
Is the brindled dog a "mastiff" 'only' a wink at Theon going mast-stiff for Asha? (See Part 4.) Maybe. But it's worth mentioning that when Theon is first being stirred by Pyke's banner and it's being battered about like the shield we see in the Drearfort three sentences after the mastiff, it's also (a) flying from a very stiff "mast" and (b) juxtaposed with a very large 'dog' of sorts:
The banner streamed from an iron mast, shivering and twisting as the wind gusted like a bird struggling to take flight. And here at least the direwolf of Stark did not fly above, casting its shadow down upon the Greyjoy kraken.

Musty Old Mattresses

The old, "musty-smelling and sagging" mattress (in the chamber that has just been re-opened after long periods of being closed and uninhabited) from Theon's homecoming is answered in Petyr's homecomiong by Lysa, who arrives a few pages later in the chapter, eager to finally have sex again with Petyr. "Mattress" is slang for a sexually available woman (https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=mattress) and Lysa sags—
Lady Lysa was two years younger than Mother, but this woman looked ten years older. Thick auburn tresses fell down past her waist, but beneath the costly velvet gown and jeweled bodice her body sagged and bulged.
—and smells stale. (Note that Lysa is on a mattress here.)
Her aunt was drenched in sweet scent, though under that was a sour milky smell. Her cheek tasted of paint and powder.
Lysa's "cheek tast[ing] of paint and powder" riffs on the line about Theon's "distaste" and "fear of ghosts":
It was not fear of ghosts that made him glance about with distaste.
The distaste wordplay is obvious: Lysa tastes bad. As for the "fear of ghosts", Lysa (whom Sansa fears) being covered in "powder" reminds us of Sansa being afraid of a "spirit" covered in powdery flour:
When the spirit stepped out of the open tomb, pale white and moaning for blood, Sansa ran shrieking for the stairs…. Arya stood her ground and gave the spirit a punch. It was only Jon, covered with flour. (AGOT Arya IV)
This line—
The halls here were larger and better furnished, if no less cold nor damp.
—is reworked by Lysa as well, who is big and well-dressed ("better furnished", so to speak)—
[B]eneath the costly velvet gown and jeweled bodice her body sagged and bulged. Her face was pink and painted, her breasts heavy, her limbs thick. She was taller than Littlefinger, and heavier; nor did she show any grace in the clumsy way she climbed down off her horse.
—but cold to Sansa and horny/wet/"damp" for Petyr.
Given that Theon's rooms are in several ways like Lysa (newly 'open for business' after a long period of being closed and untouched by men, etc.), and pronouncing aunt like antler, we also might say that where the Lysa-like rooms are "cold" and "damp", Lysa herself is Sansa's "cold" aunt. Rhyming 'rhyming'.
That "years had come and gone since" the room with the Lysa-like mattress "had last been opened" is reworked not just by Lysa getting laid, but textually when Sansa is told Lysa is coming to the Drearfort (where she is 're-opened', so to speak):
It had been years since Sansa last saw her mother's sister…"
I wonder whether Lysa crying and speaking to Sansa of being "bound by blood" to her—
Tears welled suddenly in Lady Lysa's eyes. "We are women alone now, you and I. Are you afraid, child? Be brave. I would never turn away Cat's daughter. We are bound by blood."
—might not be in part a play on the fact that "the damp went bone deep" in the Bloody Keep. By saying that, Sansa's damp (i.e. crying) aunt "went bone deep", so to speak. (If you're "bound by blood" to someone, you have a "bone deep" bond with them. Also, bone → bound wordplay?)

Braziers → Bracing?

Did Theon's attempt to drive away "the chill" and damp of the salty sea air of Pyke using "braziers"—
See that they light braziers in the other rooms to drive out some of the chill.
—inform (via wordplay: braziers → bracing) Petyr's line when the Merling King pulls up to the Drearfort?
Lord Petyr came up beside her, cheerful as ever. "Good morrow. The salt air is bracing, don't you think? It always sharpens my appetite."
And/or is that "sharpening" motif a recursion of Theon sharpening his dirk immediately after said braziers are lit?
After some time, they brought the hot water he had asked for. … While two thralls lit his braziers, Theon stripped off his travel-stained clothing and dressed to meet his father. … He hung a dirk at one hip and a longsword at the other…. Drawing the dirk, he … pulled a whetstone from his belt pouch, and gave it a few licks. He prided himself on keeping his weapons sharp.

Gods Be Good!

The motifs of Theon yelling "gods be good" at his servant and of "ceilings so high that they were lost in gloom" are recursively reworked when Lysa summons Sansa (like a servant) to speak with her the morning after she weds Petyr. Sansa responds to the summons by thinking, verbatim, "gods be good", and is then told they'll be heading to the Eyrie, which we know is "so high you can stand on the parapets and look down on the clouds", i.e. it has parapets 'so high that they were lost in the clouds':
Lady Lysa was still abed [like a good mattress!], but Lord Petyr was up and dressed. "Your aunt wishes to speak with you," he told Sansa, as he pulled on a boot. "I've told her who you are."
Gods be good. "I . . . I thank you, my lord."
Petyr yanked on the other boot. "I've had about as much home as I can stomach. We'll leave for the Eyrie this afternoon."
Seven towers, Ned had told her, like white daggers thrust into the belly of the sky, so high you can stand on the parapets and look down on the clouds. (AGOT Catelyn VI)
The notion of a "ceiling" so high it is lost in gloom is perhaps also reworked by the story Lysa tells Sansa about Petyr's "rise" to power: She says she "always knew how high [Petyr would] rise", and it's my belief that said rise has likely seen him 'lost', spiritually, in 'darkness'. (Note that ceilings are a frequently invoked metaphor when talking about climbing the corporate ladder.)
"Half his teeth were gone, and his breath smelled like bad cheese. I cannot abide a man with foul breath. Petyr's breath is always fresh . . . he was the first man I ever kissed, you know. My father said he was too lowborn, but I knew how high he'd rise. Jon gave him the customs for Gulltown to please me, but when he increased the incomes tenfold my lord husband saw how clever he was and gave him other appointments, even brought him to King's Landing to be master of coin. That was hard, to see him every day and still be wed to that old cold man.
(Recall that the motif of bad/fresh breath there reworks the "winey stench of the old man's [Sylas Sourmouth's] breath", which Theon thinks about roughly ¼ page prior to being shown his suite in the Bloody Keep.)

Butchered Sons & Brothers

Lysa continues to rant:
"Jon did his duty in the bedchamber, but he could no more give me pleasure than he could give me children. His seed was old and weak. All my babies died but Robert, three girls and two boys. All my sweet little babies dead, and that old man just went on and on with his stinking breath. So you see, I have suffered too." Lady Lysa sniffed. "You do know that your poor mother is dead?"
"Tyrion told me," said Sansa. "He said the Freys murdered her at The Twins, with Robb."
Those references to (a) a bunch of dead "babies", including two brothers, one of which was "murdered" when Lysa's father, Hoster Tully, who ruled the Riverlands, betrayed Lysa's trust; and to (b) foul smelling breath, a la Sylas, and finally to (c) the Red Wedding — a bloody betrayal of Sansa's brother, who was King of the Riverlands — particularly (per Sansa saying "Tyrion told me") as it's described by Tyrion—
Sansa did not need to hear how her brother's body had been hacked and mutilated, he decided; nor how her mother's corpse had been dumped naked into the Green Fork in a savage mockery of House Tully's funeral customs. (ASOS Tyrion VII)
—are one of the ways ASOS Sansa VI rejiggers the part of Theon's description of his Bloody Keep suite I "[omitted]" earlier, which entails betrayals, murdered brothers, a River King, slaughter, and bodies "hacked to bits".
[Theon] might have been more impressed if he had not known that these were the very chambers that had given the Bloody Keep its name. A thousand years before, the sons of the River King had been slaughtered here, hacked to bits in their beds so that pieces of their bodies might be sent back to their father on the mainland.
But Greyjoys were not murdered in Pyke except once in a great while by their brothers, and his brothers were both dead.
Lysa's speech with its reference to her abortion and to the Red Wedding (and to stink-breath like Sylas's) isn't the only (or even the main) way Petyr's homecoming chapter refracts those images from Theon's homecoming, though.
Littlefinger is himself a kind of River King (as Lord Paramount of the Trident), right? And note that we read all about his "slaughtered" "sons" just before he enters the tower, wherein we then see the foul betrayers who murdered their 'brothers'. I'm talking, of course, about his sheep and his sheepdogs:
"How many sheep do I have at present, Kella?"
… "Three and twenty, m'lord. There was nine and twenty, but Bryen's dogs killed one and we butchered some others and salted down the meat."
"Ah, cold salt mutton. I must be home.…" … "Come, let's see if my hall is as dreary as I recall." … A handful of sheep were wandering about the base of the flint tower…. …
Within, the tower seemed even smaller. An open stone stair wound round the inside wall, from undercroft to roof. Each floor was but a single room. The servants lived and slept in the kitchen at ground level, sharing the space with a huge brindled mastiff and a half-dozen sheep-dogs.
Note the kitchen, recalling that the Bloody Keep is paired with the Kitchen Keep as Theon first gazes on Pyke:
Farther out were the Kitchen Keep and the Bloody Keep, each on its own island.
Note, too, that the sheep are coded as Petyr's "sons", in a way (a la the "slaughtered… sons of the River King" Theon remembers in his Bloody Tower rooms), and not just because he owns them. He says that Kella has lots of bastards and that she minds his sheep, right? And what else does he say of Kella, in jest? That she 'is' the "mother" of his "daughter," "Alayne Stone":
"Alayne . . . Stone, would it be?" When he nodded, she said, "But who is my mother?"
"Kella?"
"Please no," she said, mortified.
"I was teasing.
The joke foregrounds the notion of Petyr as the father of Kella's children. And while she supposedly has a bunch of bastards, we don't see them. We just see the one girl with the livestock-evoking eye with a sty. It's almost like the sheep she looks after are her children. And thus like Petyr is their father.
(Note the word "mortified". This points straight back to Theon in his Bloody Tower for two reasons: First, greyscale, which mortifies the flesh, killed Balon's brother Harlon, who died "in a windowless tower room" at Pyke. Second: Theon will, in his next chapter, be truly mortified by the realization that "Esgred" is his sister Asha, where that masquerade in turn prefigures Sansa masquerading as Alayne.)
So the "cold" Bloody Keep with its partner the Kitchen Keep and its story of a "slaughter", betrayal, brother killing brother, a River King's sons' bodies "hacked to bits in their beds" — all these motifs are reworked by Kella's account of one of Lord Paramount Petyr's sheep-'sons' being killed by its lexicial 'brothers', the very "sheep-dogs" who were supposed to guard it, and of other sheep-'sons' being verbatim "butchered", i.e. slaughtered on a killing bed and in the process surely hacked into pieces that were then preserved against spoilage for future consumption, such that the resulting "cold salt mutton" could be used as travel rations. Which jibes with Theon's language, creatively interpreted:
[T]he sons of the River King had been slaughtered here, hacked to bits in their beds so that pieces of their bodies might be sent back to their father on the mainland.
(They were slaughtered and hacked to bits only so as to properly preserve them against spoilage during their upcoming journey "back to their father on the mainland", you see!)

Theon's Honor Guard

The conditions in Theon's rooms are consistent with the cold welcome he receives, both from Aeron—
The priest's manner was chilly, most unlike the man Theon remembered.
—and Balon—
Theon pulled off his gloves. "… Why is my father not here to greet me?"
"He awaits you in the Sea Tower, m'lord. When you are rested from your trip."
And I thought Ned Stark cold.
—and they're thus part of a broad yin/yang 'rhyme' with Petyr's initial homecoming, which is warm and welcoming and full of familiar faces, whereas Theon knows no one, such that he thinks:
It is as if I were a stranger here….
The reversal is wryly underlined when Petyr is greeted at the shore by his "captain of the guards", Bryen:
"It is good to have you home, my lord," said one old man.
Thus Petyr ironically gets the "honor guard" welcome Theon hoped he'd get on his arrival 'home':
[Theon] saw… no honor guard waiting to escort him from Lordsport to Pyke, only smallfolk going about their small business.
Notice that where no one stops what they're doing for Theon, everyone stops when Petyr arrives. And of course, everyone in his household recognizes him, whereas no one recognizes Theon. Which is telling, because in a deep sense, that's all Theon really wants, deep down: a little recognition.
Littlefinger has it… but it's not enough.

(SUB)SERIES CONCLUDES IN PART 10: Oswell & Aeron; Lothar & Dagmer; The Closing Twist

2023.05.31 19:20 M_Tootles "Cargos, Slatterns & Butchery" with Helya & Grisel. (Spoilers TWOW)

2023.05.31 19:12 kimiwaffles I chose a holiday with my family over a baby

I’ve had this anger pent up since Christmas when it happened.
My husband and I made plans with my sister and husband to visit my mom & parter for Christmas. Our niece (My husbands brothers 2nd child) was due around that time. We had thought we might miss the babies birth. During our 10 years married we have spent Christmas Day with my family 1 time prior to this. My sister was really insistent we spend this Christmas with my mom. We spend basically every holiday with my husbands family.
As the holiday approaches COVID is still an issue. My husband has been conditioned to please everyone in his family and so when asked if we would be meeting the baby if she comes before our trip he said yes. I didn’t think much of it, yet.
Day of birth: BIL send message to family. No visitors due to COVID. BIL calls bragging about how they didn’t have to take COVID tests in the hospital and the nurses said they weren’t vaccinated and you don’t have to wear a mask BIL says visitors are allowed but need to get tested Baby is born FIL and MIL get to hospital & report they were not tested for COVID. We’re in California, so this is very abnormal.
This gives me major red flags.. right?? The prior year when we visited my family the week before Christmas this same BIL showed up to my family gathering when he was in town. Didn’t wear a mask. Christmas Eve he reports he has COVID. We all got exposure notifications. My mom and her partner had to cancel their Christmas plans and spend it alone, my sister and her husband had to cancel their plans and so did we. All of my family spent Christmas alone due to COVID.
So when faced with the decision to go meet the baby 2 days before we’re supposed to leave to spend Christmas with my family I obviously said no. My husband wasn’t fully on my side, feeling pressure from his very intense family, so he tried to buy some time. I don’t know why. Eventually it came out that we weren’t coming to see the baby until after our trip. I apologized to the mom for not being there but hope she understands it’s for safety reasons. She said no worries.
My mother in law tries to get involved and sends my husband this text: ā€œI’m sure you are being pressured in all directions but just remember what’s most important.ā€ 😮EXCUSE ME? To me she was inferring that her family is more important than mine. Am I reading this wrong?
We get down to our accommodations and are spending time with my family when my husband receives a phone call from his brother. BIL had been sober for a few years but sounded absolutely scary. He was yelling at my husband calling him a pu**y and that he’s not a man, ā€œI don’t even know who you are anymoreā€ and relentless name calling and put downs. For 45 minutes. My husband wouldn’t let me grab the phone no matter how hard I tried. If I would have gotten ahold of it I would have screamed SHUT THE F UP YOUR FAMILY IS NOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN MINE! Alas I never had the chance.
My husband then received over 50 text messages with the same type content. My husband is so used to this abuse it doesn’t affect him at all. Meanwhile my heart rate was through the roof and my palm are sweaty just typing this.
My husband apologized on behalf of us but IIRC the receiving of the apology was just whatever.
We had plans to spend 3 days on the coast together after Christmas, but decided to cancel to just get it over with (meeting the baby).
This family has gigantic altercations and then everyone sweeps everything under the rug and it is never discussed.
We went to meet the baby when she was 9 days old. While we were there my husband and more importantly BIL didn’t interact with the baby at all during the 2 hours we were there. But I did. And I guess that satisfied them.
And there was never an apology. No discussion. Don’t I deserve one? Doesn’t my husband deserve one?
Fast forward to now (you might have seen my MIL vs A/C post) and I’m realizing this has all been compounding on me and I’m furious and resentful.
Sigh Thanks if you made it this far.

2023.05.31 18:36 Princess__Kylie Redwyne Prologue

203 AC
Mermaid's Palace
Icy snow pelted against the tightly shut windows as if in a mad fury to find any semblance left of warmth and utterly snuff it out. Talla had experienced winter before, but never anything of this magnitude and strength. Not even the maesters had an explanation why the Arbor of all places suffered an onslaught of snow and cold. Still, the shiver that rippled down the woman’s spine proved the weather’s victory in taking over the warmth. Talla pulled her cloak tighter against her body as yet another shiver rocked throughout her while she wiped away another of a seemingly never-ending amount of tears. For two months now Talla had cried and on those days in which she felt as if she would get better, she’d hear her father’s voice again, repeating the same cursing shouts that were thrown against each other and the tears would return just as strong as the first day the news broke.
A series of knocks would ring out against her door moments before a handful of servants spilled into her solar. Talla stared at them all with no emotion hidden behind her bloodshot eyes, nor did she say anything as her handmaidens began lightly running combs through her messy hair. Only when Santolhal meandered in behind the servants did Talla’s stoic face crack into the slightest of smiles. His gaze ran over his wife, from head to toe, with the usual quiet and intentional look of his. Talla held her small smile as he nodded to her once in approval.
ā€œThe lady will be ready in an hour, m’lord.ā€ A maid spoke, an elderly woman that was obviously in charge of the others.
Santolhal turned towards the woman, nodded once, then flashed a final glance towards his wife before leaving the solar.
Lowton
Just as predicted, an hour later the noble couple were making their appearances on the streets of Lowton. Though the stockpiles of food had prevented much devastation and famine, the people of Lowton still suffered greatly and it was an unusual and highly surprising suggestion of Santolhal’s to make their presence known amongst those lower born.
Talla did her duty, the loyal wife that she was, and survived these trips, hiding her cries and sadness behind practiced faux smiles and warm greetings. Her thick woolen cloak was constantly held close to her body with red strings laced with golden flakes; Talla’s wealth would be obvious as ever despite such a utilitarian garb, the clothes covering the wool dyed heavily in sea-greens and silvers. Even in the cloudy and snowy gloom of the winter weather, Talla would stand out amongst any crowd simply by the color of her fiery hair alone.
ā€œMy Lord!ā€ A well dressed man called out as they approached the couple in an obvious hurry, stopped only by the firm hand of an armored guard. ā€œMy lady,ā€ The man set his focus to Talla, ā€œYour brother, he’s here, and he’s looking for you!ā€
Talla’s face paled even under the makeup she wore and the flushed freezing skin. She glanced at Santolhal for only a moment before answering the man, ā€œBring him here, now.ā€ Talla ordered without hesitation or waiting for any approval from Santolhal.
When Ryam would be led through the city, in whatever shape he may be, he and whoever he might have traveled with would be led into a comfortable inn only recently deserted as Talla paid for any within to leave immediately.
