What We Offer?
Palm Royale Funeral Home was built on the beautiful grounds of Palm Royale Cemetery to offer the community a funeral home and cemetery co-located on the same property to provide families with a continuity of care and services.
Palm Royale Funeral Home & Cemetery is the newest funeral home in Naples and offers burial, entombment, and cremation service options that range from highly personalized to time-honored traditional. Our brand-new facility has a light and airy feel to it and was designed to offer a serene, yet uplifting and supportive place to gather and honor.
Inside is a contemporary chapel, reception room, and catering café that are adjacent, yet separate, providing flexibility in the types and styles of services we can offer. There is also easy access to a covered, wrap-around veranda, that provides additional seating in an open-air setting.
A high-quality digital platform enables us to offer sophisticated services such as recording and live streaming, allowing distant family and friends the opportunity to “stay connected”, “say good-bye”, and view services either “live or later”. This Tribute will also be available for viewing on an online Obituary Page we will set up in honor of your loved one at no charge. This page will have its own link and capture condolences and cherished remembrances shared by others. In addition, a Life Tribute DVD will be provided to you as a keepsake. We are also able to produce custom playlists, play special songs, accommodate live musicians, and much more.
Our advanced technology also enables us to make virtual and online arrangements so that those who are out of the area or are confined to home are able to plan, make selections, E-sign documents, and E-pay remotely.

Funeral & Memorial Service Options

Many families feel uncertain or burdened by the notion of planning a tribute. They anticipate that arranging services will be cumbersome, complicated, or overly sad. But setting a unified time and place to gather, share, and pay one’s respects is an important and worthwhile step in the healing process.
Many also don’t know where to start or what they “should” do. But we know that families prioritize and find meaning in different ways, so we embrace originality and strive to make every remembrance special. For some, the traditions and rites they are accustomed to offer comfort and stability, while others feel inspired to plan something that reflects the unique personality of their loved one.
Our staff will help you determine the best way to tell your loved one’s story, memorialize their legacy, and bring comfort to family and friends. We will also coordinate with other parties on your behalf, arrange any ancillary services, order items, place obituaries, set up, clean up, and more.

Chapter 89: Clash Of Snow
I blinked, all my worst nightmares resurfacing as the Snow Dancer's silver sword swept towards my neck.
In that moment, I saw a premonition of what was to come if I failed in my duty to rescue my kingdom and secure plentiful supply of inexpensive soap to the peasantry.
A glint of steel, no different than the cruel edge of a guillotine, its swift onslaught the herald to our fair realm falling into ruin and rubble as a newly raised republic.
I shuddered as images of fire, smoke and anarchy zipped through my mind, our libraries overrun with illiterate looters and bandits while farmers burgled our royal kitchens for the produce we'd bought from them at a price so extortionately low that they could never hope to leave poverty.
But that's all they were. A terrible premonition.
It wasn't yet time for my life to flash before my eyes. And so I answered the coming sword with the only answer that befitted a princess of this dignified kingdom.
I scowled.
How dare this woman attempt to behead me!
Even in my worst nightmares, whole crowds of angry peasants filled the streets! A deluge of rotten fruit tossed and thrown at me as they decried the life of luxury I deservedly lived at their expense! I had an audience! A death befitting my high status!
Even in my last moments, I could look down upon the unwashed masses from the raised platform built for my execution!
But here?
This was a frozen chamber, with the crowds consisting of frozen guards barely tall enough to keep their heads above the snow!
The insult was palpable!
And so–my expression creased beneath the weight of the indignity I felt.
Faced with a scowl hardened by 3 hours of daily practice over 4117 consecutive days, it's little wonder that the sword approaching me instantly slowed.
Indeed, the Snow Dancer positively quailed at the sight … even if she was still smiling in highly off-putting joy!
Brows dented, I twisted around to face the silver sword, taking advantage of the lapse in concentration as I swept Starlight Grace up.
Then, with all the elegance of a troll merchant clubbing away an unsatisfied customer, I batted the silver sword with the utter disdain it deserved.
Immediately, the Snow Dancer pirouetted, her speed as she brought her sword around at odds with the weak commitment of her strike.
Clearly fazed from my utter contempt at this terrible choice of location, the blade that approached my side was as easily slapped away as the falling leaves in my orchard.
And then … she blinked away.
Gaining several steps of distance, the elven woman stood still and tilted her head, looking down at her own sword with an expression of puzzlement.
After which–her blue eyes took in my scowl.
“Wow,” she said. “Now that was something.”
I held Starlight Grace aloft, adopting whatever pose I knew looked most fashionable against the billowing snow at my back.
Ohoho … this sword saint!
She'd underestimated my ability to instantly cower opponents with facial expressions alone! And no wonder. Who else could crease their brows faster than physics could allow? When a servant spilled wine on my dress, I could adopt an expression of outrage faster than the liquid could stain me!
“An opportunistic attack, Snow Dancer. But I advise you not to underestimate me. The strike of your blade is less swift than the fumbling of my attendants.”
Ophelia blew a puff of silver hair away.
“Ouch, that hurts, comparing my [Butterfly Horizon] to whatever it is maids try on you. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised you parried that. Being high up the fancy ladder must mean having a sixth sense to attacks from behind, huh?”
“Quite so. It matters not from which direction they come. When they seek to stain my dress red, I will know before the deed is done.”
The Snow Dancer twirled her sword, drawing the falling snow towards it.
“So sneak attacks won't work? And to think I still can't catch a whiff of anything scary about you. Now that's a strong presence concealment. How long have you trained with a sword to get like that, Miss E-rank Adventurer?”
I smiled in response.
All the while, I came to a sudden realisation.
I, Juliette Contzen, time trained with a sword, zero hours, was currently duelling with a sword saint.
“O … ohohohoho! I've … I've been trained in a secret fencing style before I could even use a fork! As … As you can see, my ability to stand undaunted is testament to my unmatched skills in swordsmanship, born of natural talent and honed through years of studious effort!”
“Really? Wow. It really is secret. I don't recognise it at all. Is it an adventurer thing?”
“This?” I looked down at my footwork. “Why, this is … this is the pouncing cobra sub-stance of my secret fencing style! A highly defensive position favouring swift counter attacks! Only a fool would attempt to break through my infallible parry and suffer my undodgeable reprisal!”
The elven woman narrowed her eyes at my perfectly acceptable way of holding a sword
“Hmmmmm. It doesn't really remind me of a pouncing cobra?”
I smiled. Hard.
To be so studiously examined was … well, a little bit embarrassing.
But no matter!
Once I defeated her, all thoughts of my supremely unorthodox pose would be forgotten!
Yes, my underhanded strike at her undefended flank had shockingly failed. And yes, this was now an open fight with an A-rank sword saint. And yes, this was indeed a minor problem. After all, for an untrained princess to defeat a sword saint in a fair fight was an impossible feat. The difference between our skill and experience was a canyon wider than the eyes could see.
That's why–I had absolutely zero intention to fight her fairly!
Ohohohoho!
If I were to defeat the Snow Dancer, then it would be with guile, subterfuge and an utter lack of chivalry!
And so, I turned to my assistant in crime!
There, safely tucked away behind a truly impressive snow bastion, my future handmaiden was peering over a solid battlement, ready to come to my assistance at a moment's notice.
And upon the walls of her castle, was a giant message written in the snow.

~ Fight On! Fight On! Juliette Official Fan Club! ♡ B-E-L-I-E-V-E ♡ ~

“You can do it!~” she cried, her hands forming a tunnel around her mouth. “We believe in you!~”
Quack, quack. Quack, quack.
Squeezed under her arm was the crystal beaked duck. She hadn't bothered plucking the arrows from it.
I pursed my lips.
Then I turned to the elven woman.
“Oho … ohoho! S-See the peril you find yourself in, Snow Dancer! Even my loyal handmaiden sees no need to come to my immediate aid! Challenging me with a sword is as futile as challenging the stars!”
Far from fleeing at my proclamation, Ophelia's eyes lit up with anticipation.
Ugh, people with swords!
Why did they only think with their foreheads and not anything behind it?! Just go headbutt a wall if you want to expend energy!
“Funny, that,” she said, for some reason sheathing her sword. “I actually did try challenging the stars once.”
Her hand never left her sword's hilt.
Then, she smiled as a circle of white flames suddenly erupted around her.
“Spoiler alert–I failed,” she said, her hair rustling magnificently amongst the ring of blazing light. “But I learned how to get a bit closer to them at least … so, [Gravity Reversal].”
The Snow Dancer drew her sword.
I was aghast.
How did everyone know how to conjure flames except me?! Furthermore, was it a rule that overdone names were necessary for sword techniques?! Why, it's because of people like her that Coppelia wished to rename [Spring Breeze] to [Ball Of Doom]! Just what was a [Gravity Reversal]?!
As expected, names should provide clear and concise information! How was I supposed to prepare for something so ominously named with so little context?!
I already suspected I couldn't rely on my scowl to still her next attack! Even so, this sounded like something else entirely! Was she about to throw something at me?!
“–Hieee?!”
The moment her blade left its sheath, I could feel the ground … no, the snow beneath me beginning to rise.
And then I realised that what she was throwing was, in fact, me.
To my absolute chagrin, everything in a wide circle around me was suddenly lifted up into the air.
I was appalled. There were very few scenarios in which I wished to be removed from the ground, and all of them involved being carried by Coppelia as she rescued me to a dramatic backdrop of something exploding.
This was not that!
“–Hiiieeeeee?!”
T-This sensation!
It was practically the same as when my mother's maids woke me each morning! The hopeless indignation as I was swept away as part of my duvet and unceremoniously dumped to the floor!
And worst … it wasn't the sparkling floor of my bedroom which awaited me, but a ceiling as dull as it was dusty!
Glancing up, I witnessed the dark stonework slowly … slowly approaching.
So slowly, in fact, that all I could feel was the insult being levied against both my time and my high standards for any demise!
A plain ceiling without a hint of embellishment? It was disgraceful! Of all the ceilings I wished to be splattered upon, it would be the magnificent Plafond De Dix Mille Cygnes, painted upon the vestibule of Reitzlake's cathedral!
No, just as much as I refused to accept being hoisted into the air against my will, I also refused to be crushed against such an artless ceiling … especially by a bed of snow!
So the Snow Dancer wished to test winter against me, did she?
Ohohohohoho!!
How dare she belittle the kingdom's sharp seasonal changes! To wake up and witness the horror of a blanket of heavy snow suddenly throttling my begonias was a sight I was all too keenly aware of! Why, it was not merely insects which threatened my orchard, but the elements themselves!
That's why–
I leaned down, then shoved Starlight Grace directly into the snow.
“Such fine snow you offer. Let's see if we can make it finer yet, shall we?”
And then–I began to dig.
Witness the dawning morn, breaking these chains of malaise! Gardening Form, 5th Stance … [Winter Snow Shovel]!”
Ohhhohohohohoho!
Here it was!
A finely honed technique used specifically to remove mounds of snow without the need to painstakingly shovel away like a peasant in a field!
By digging my sword in overlapping, cross-crossing motions, I could make any mound of snow into powder so fine that once I blew at it, all the snow was instantly swept to the abyss!
… But this time, I had no wish to turn this snow into mist.
No, for the Snow Dancer's slovenly attack, she would receive the most slovenly [Winter Snow Shovel] in return!
Because instead of turning the snow into fine grains as I dug … I ceased, allowing the partially hewn icy snow to remain gathered beneath my boots.
I peered down at the snowy ground, seeing the innumerable tiny fissures I'd created.
And then–I gently blew.
BWOOOOOOOOOOOOMPH.
The mass of snow beneath me shuddered and exploded.
Suddenly, a hailstorm of my very own making shot towards the direction of the Snow Dancer, each rough, yet artistically shaped shard capable of being propelled by a single breath!
Ohhohohohohohoho!!!
An A-rank sword saint! And yet what was [Gravity Reversal], but an overly named way to throw a snowball?! Perhaps it could be used to bring down pigeons from the sky, but such an attack was worthless against the power of my snow shovelling skills, tested and refined in the unremitting cold of Tirea's winters!
Containing the cutting edge of a sharpened dagger, each icy shard utterly exposed the sword saint's poor naming sense as her technique was instead turned into a falling rain of doom … nor were the shards the only things to fall.
For a moment, I found myself suddenly suspended in the air, taking my place high above everyone's heads like the veritable angel I was.
And then I dropped, not yet having bloomed my wings.
“–Hiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeee?!”

2023.05.30 16:19 BusinessWes [Online][5E][ET][UTC-4] "The Stranger'' Cosmic Horror Campaign Seeking Players. High production value. Professionally Streamed & Recorded. (Post 3/4)

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/lfg/comments/13gfsqa/online5eetutc4_the_stranger_cosmic_horro (graciously reviewed and approved by the subreddit mods)This is Post (3/4), we're posting this four weeks in a row before making final picks.
Preface
This is a long post - crazy long even. That's because we care so much to find those just as impassioned as we are about this amazing hobby. We love high quality D&D campaigns, and we believe it takes effort and time to make it happen. If you take the effort to get through learning about us in this post, reading every word with care and interest, we will do the same with your application.
Our commitments:
How to Apply
World Preface
In the enchanted realm of Avarra, where high magic weaves its intricate web through the fabric of existence, a burgeoning form of sorcery takes root. Secluded on the island city of Crowperch, the pursuit and mastery of void magic are richly rewarded, enticing arcanists from the farthest reaches of the world to unravel its mysteries. Yet, the enigmatic allure of Crowperch extends beyond the arcane; a diverse tapestry of industry, history, and craftsmanship entwines the island's very essence.
Beneath the surface, the island's riches reveal themselves: the mines and quarries, abundant with untapped potential, and the surrounding seas, offering bounties from the ocean's depths. Ancient archaeological sites whisper secrets of bygone eras, while artisans ply their remarkable skills on the bustling city streets. Tales of a long-forgotten, rumored treasure continue to captivate the imaginations of adventurers and sightseers alike.
But one must pay a steep price for this wealth of opportunity and intrigue. It is wise to avert one's gaze from the iron grip of autocratic rule and the unyielding scrutiny that looms over the island's denizens. For those who venture to Crowperch, a single obligation remains: seek your heart's desire, and then depart – for the island's enigmatic embrace is not meant to last forever.
Application Overview
In this sacred fellowship, we stand steadfast in the face of the dreaded D&D group killers. Our commitment to this game is unwavering, for it is not just a hobby, but a way of life - an appointment that must be kept at all costs. For us, the work does not end with character creation or worldbuilding. Nay, we strive for a deep understanding of each character, for their hopes and dreams, their fears and flaws, so that we may weave a complex and enthralling campaign that will leave you breathless. We implore you, dear adventurer, to show up regularly and with a burning passion in your heart. Let your excitement be infectious, let your dedication be unwavering.
Overview
Selection Criteria (In order of importance)
Investment
This campaign is getting some big investment. All players will get custom commissions of their characters, animated. Additionally, we are commissioning all maps, tokens, flairs, and elements to make this truly something special.
Campaign Preface
As twilight descended upon the restless sea, the ancient ship, Her Royal Rose, creaked under the weight of its cargo. Its passengers, a motley assortment of scholars, fisherman, guard and others with business on the island of Crowperch, sit tightly in cramped quarters. Even as the tempestuous winds moaned through crevasse and open windows, the opportunities and tasks that beckon them to the island keep them going, a siren's call that drowned out the ocean's roar.
The skies above were an oppressive tapestry of writhing clouds, their tendrils suffocating the last vestiges of daylight as if to obscure the path to the island. A shroud of mist swallowed the horizon, leaving the ship to navigate through a nebulous labyrinth, its destination only guaranteed by Captain Alaric Thorne.
As Her Royal Rose inched closer to Sove, the air grew heavy with mist and sea salt which deposited itself gradually on the railings, sails and masts. Little Henry Williams, the ship's messenger runs throughout the halls pattering on each door, "The captain has an announcement, all to the deck. The captain has an announcement, all to the deck." The clacking of his wooden foot pattering one after another with each step, a disfigurement he earned while working aboard Her Royal Rose.
Captain Alaric Thorne stood on the deck, the salty wind tugging at his weathered features. His voice rang out, its timbre heavy with authority and unease, as he addressed the gathered passengers.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I must bring to your attention an unfortunate turn of events. It seems the Saturation has arrived earlier than anticipated this year. As many of you know, this phenomenon causes an unnaturally heavy accumulation of salt in the air, resulting in deposits that weigh down our vessel."
He paused, letting the gravity of the situation settle upon his passengers before continuing, "This unexpected occurrence has forced us to halt our usual schedule, for the safety of both the ship and her passengers. Once Her Royal Rose arrives, she will remain anchored at Sove until the Saturation clears, as navigating these treacherous waters under such conditions would be inviting disaster."
A murmur of concern rippled through the crowd, many who were on this voyage planned their departure prior to The Saturation. The captain raised his hand to quell their rising unease. "I understand this may cause you some inconvenience, but I assure you, we will resume our journey as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime, you may continue your research, tasks and exploration on the island. Sove is well stocked and very hospitable to travelers especially those displaced during our seasonal shifts."
With that, Captain Thorne turned away, leaving the passengers to ponder the implications of his words as the first tendrils of salt-laden mist began to coil around the ship, heralding the arrival of the Saturation.
In the dimly lit corners of their minds, the passengers could sense a truth they dared not confront: Their voyage to Crowperch was going to be a lot longer than they had hoped. As the ship drew nearer to the island, the shadows beneath the spires of the fortress atop the mountain loomed over the ship, casting a shadow over what little moonlight illuminated the darkness.
Technology
Monetization
So we are still small, so monetization isn’t at the top of our list. That said, our goal is to
  1. Play Excellent D&D
  2. Donate to charity
  3. Re-invest to make better content and
  4. Compensate players to allow them to play more D&D.
How specifically that all happens is still obscured by the mists of time. By participating in this campaign players release all intellectual property created for the campaign to Roll for Impact and related brands. Please note that this is meaningless while we're still small, but consider this hopeful thinking for our success. The next campaign is getting SO much effort, so we want to stay safe.

Are you a dungeon master?
Making campaigns like these is our passion. We love going HIGH production value, HIGH quality. If this is something that you love too and you want to dungeon master in our world, we would LOVE to talk to you. As you can tell from this post, there's not enough dungeon masters out there doing this (clearly way overboard) level of effort.

2023.05.30 13:59 final566 4.2 Meta Information Guide (tips and tricks)

This is coming from Chinese Immortal MMR
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mid-tactical changes you should incorporate + pros and cons
2nd wave rotation, If you hard shove quickly enough on Mid you can recall to buy a blasting wand and return to mid lane as the wave is collapsing/about to collapse, If the enemy does not do the same thing and they are wasting their time poking they have now practically lost the lane unless the jungle babysits them. Obviously, as this is now evolving and more and more people are starting to figure this out it is shifting into a (preserve rune instead of bone plating, hard shoving, and rotating back) this alienates many mid-lane champions that cannot hard shove
2nd Con (super big problem) Jhin / AD champions can do this advantage so extremely that MOST AP champions that are NOT assassins are been completely removed from gameplay because it is impossible for them to scale. (also how brokenly easy the windbrothers have laning phase then can just turn off their brains derp rotate everywhere on the map is beyond obnoxious)
---------------------
Top Lane
------------------------
No one cares about top lane right now you are there to support the ADC and the most likely mid ADC to win the game if you choose any scaling champion top you are hard trolling, ideally you want something with hard CC or you are trolling (Chinese players are extremely toxic, but it is also encouraging culturally to be we-chat toxic unlike western (riot games stance) bullying over there is REAL like people bully you super hard it is a big problem (and they have a tribunal to mitigate this issue but does not matter the population is so large, and because players go to internet cafe you can sometimes get alienated if you do not copy/paste what others are doing so incorporation is pretty standard vs individualism -- I digress but basically yeah HARD CC champions top
----------------------------------------------
Support / ADC
---------------------------------------
basically, Kaisai is GOD, followed by collector Jhin, support Ashe, Varus, Lucian a bit rest of ADC are viable but sub-pick if you are not picking those
support enchanter - do not pick Braum or leona or stupid tanks you want something that can buff your ADC steroids + Leona will die before you even reach the ADC
-------------------------------------------------------
Jungle
----------------------------------------------------------
Pick anything that has extremely fast clear, grave is good, and lee is good rammus is good because adc is good, twitch is good because adc is good, sad to say but yone is very good because his ganking snowball affect (hopefully Yone gets a big nerf this coming patch 56% win rate in multiple lanes with a staggering 49-50% ban rate disgusting)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Macro
-------------------------
1st Dragon IF Ice proceed to 5 man fight for it, first dragon is the most important if it is Ice dragon, If it is not Ice dragon 2nd dragon is the most important if the second is ICE then you MUST win it if you lost 1st if however you lose 1st and 2nd is Ice and also lose it most Chinese lobby will proceed to FF because the game becomes too snowball for the enemy side and it no longer is worth it ( this happen to me in 4 games and the game ended in 8minutes) - Herald if first dragon is NOT ice you may then proceed to aquire Herald and give up dragon if the situation is unfavorable but if not dragon is too important because of the stupid Ice potentially appearing as second
------ for those that did not understand why they FF (im sure I will get comments) It is because if your second is Ice and you win it now has two stacks of ability haste by this point most champion have some ability haste and it starts to equal more then 4k gold worth of ability haste in terms of cooldown reduction and dps increase for some champions this doubles their DPS, If you lose Ice first is not the end of the world but you cannot lose anymore dragon or the game will be nearly impossible to win due to the ability haste from additional dragons
------- Times you need to switch mentality by 7minutes the game is now transitioning into mid game almost late game (this is similar to Season 1)
----- Baron -------- If baron is about to spawn and you win a team fight or two enemy players die OR jungle dies FIGHT for the baron the first baron as soon it spawns is SOOOOO WEAK that it dies in 15seconds flat with a team dishing out proper dps (hence why fast clear junglers are favored because of that early baron)
---- 9 minutes ------
This is LATE game you should be at three items most likely try to pressure the enemy team into a choke hold into their base to finish the game do not aram do not just farm you will start to lose the snowball factor you acquire from the first 8minutes.......

And well that is it this is Chinese HIGH MMR currently (my Chinese account is sitting on immortal 3) (western account is sitting on Diamond II which is pathetic but western players are pretty slow on the uptake and anything below master is frustratingly bad) hopefully people read this and start to expand their horizon goodluck.

2023.05.30 08:39 TheCurserHasntMoved (Sneakyverse) The Drums of War: Chapter 1: Among the Star Tides

Aboard a venerable diplomatic vessle:

Beneath a well-tended banner depicting a yellow star at its center, and the burning Ignitia on its windward side, Captain Yaevdrill kept watch on the bridge. It was hardly the first time he'd sailed the Among the Star Tides We Sing into a potentially volatile situation, but the disappearance of no less than thirty Star Sailor ships without so much as a text only communication had made the possible first-contact mission take on an ominous quality. Those ships who returned bore crews who spoke of "Sneakies, but ugly," aggressively taking prisoners for some purpose, yet there were ships within the stars of the Clans of Eldra who should have returned, or been heard from. Worse, there had been no communications from anyone within Clans space for over two months. Thus, the mission.
With him, there was the gunnery officer, who was keeping alert at her station, and First Lieutenant Robert George, the Master at Arms, who was scowling at the main viewscreen as if it could give him answers. It may not have appeared to be so, but the blue skinned, four armed captain and pale pink skinned two armed lieutenant were kin, a matter of adoption involving both of their grandfathers. It was therefore with the weight of not only a good friend, but a close cousin that Yaevdrill listened to Robbie growl, "We should get the civvies out."
"This isn't the first dangerous mission we've sailed," Yaevdrill said softly.
"Aye sir. We should get the civvies out."
"Any reason?"
Robbie glared at the main viewscreen with even greater intensity and said, "My gut's twisting."
"That's concerning."
"Remember our tour aboard the Penguin?"
"Yes…"
"Same twisting."
"Two squads combat ready around the clock. Billet the off-duties inside the armory."
"Already done sir. Put the civvies on evac ready, sir. This is a matter of shipboard security, please don't make me invoke my rights."
"I'll write the order. Also, release vac-armor to the crew."
A small amount of tension left Robbie's shoulders as he glanced up to the banner, "We'll do them proud, Granddad," he whispered as he passed beneath it.
Some hours later, Captain Yaevdrill was enjoying a cup of tea in the galley when he was accosted by Ambassador Sophia Laurent. It was improper to smile at her while she ostensibly demanded answers to changes in the mission which she technically led, but Humans were all just so adorable. "Why exactly is my husband sleeping in the armory?"
"Because his commanding officer has decided to operate under combat readiness."
"Am I, or am I not the chief ambassador of this mission, oh great descendant of Linus the Rescuer?"
"I'm sorry, I don't remember signing the We Sing away to you. I also don't recall appointing you to be the Master at Arms. Is my memory faulty, Madam Ambassador?"
She scowled fiercely up at him, and admitted, "No. Explain."
"Robbie and I think that there is more danger than would appear."
"Based upon?"
"What saved us both in the New Barbary War."
"So his gut?"
"Aye."

In high orbit over a conquered world:

Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn sneered at the viewport of his glorious scout frigate where the newly conquered planet was displayed. Whatever the inhabitants had called it, it would be gloriously renamed Kivx soon enough. Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn knew that it was only a matter of time until all peoples are given up to the glory of Axzuur just as these inferior insectoids were now. The Priest-Masters had originally expected the enormous beetles size, chitin, and multiple limbs to provide a worthy challenge to Axxaakk might, yet they were worthy only of sating the thirst of Axzuur, may the stars quake at his name.
The blue skinned axxaakkoids had proved less disappointing. They were still surprisingly weak for their size, but at least their idea of fighting wasn't to form a line and fire in volleys. They had some smaller, stronger, faster, fiercer axxaakoids, only about the same height as the Axxaakk, but just as strong, if not stronger. The larger four armed blue warriors engaged at range with multiple weapons while the smaller warriors, which had only the proper two arms, came in close to meet Axxaakk warriors in glorious blade-to-blade combat. The dead had earned their young the right to one day prove themselves worthy of service to Axzuur.
However, Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn was dissatisfied with how few such ships had been captured, a mere dozen, as all the rest had either already been sailing away when the glorious invasion began, or else fought to the death rather than surrender. Even those captured they did have were cases of chance more than the warrior's glorious skill, as those crews too fought to the last adult, and even most of the older children were slain in battle. Truly, these unworthy dung beetles were a waste of his warriors talents when such capable foes lurk beyond his sight.
An Initiate-Highborn made his obeisance before making his report while still bowed at the waist, as is proper, "Acolyte-Lord, there comes a ship with in-hyperspace communication capabilities. An ambassador requests contact with the rulers of the unworthy, and do not know our glory."
Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn did not take his eyes from the viewscreen as he commanded, "Correct their error."
"I obey," the attendant said as he shuffled back to his station.
"Report from station."
"I obey, they request a diplomatic meeting."
"The behavior of the unworthy. What is the unworthy race which desires to grovel at my sandals?"
"Acolyte-Lord, it is by the pink warrior race, as well as the four armed warriors."
"They come to investigate the lack of communications."
"They send diplomats to investigate, Acolyte-Lord, they put out their throats to us."
"This insult shall not stand. Gather the escorts, set an intercept course."

Later, in a desolate space between systems:

Two days ahead of schedule, the Among the Star Tides We Sing was ripped out of hyperspace by a gravity spike. A frigate and two escort cruisers barred her way, and were transmitting demands for her to heave to and prepare to be boarded. "Get the children and all nonessential crew to the lifeboats," Captain Yaevdrill ordered as he replied to the frigate demands with ascent and ordered the helmsman to coordinate with the unknown vessel.
"Those are not Clan ships," his executive officer said after relaying the orders.
"All hands, all hands, get into vac armor, I say again, all hands, all hands, get into vac armor. Unknown xenos boarding party imminent, use stored atmo only. Unknown xenos boarding party imminent, quarantine protocols, and hostile response readiness protocols are in effect," came Robbie's voice over the intercom.
"You heard the man," the captain said as he led by example and made his way to the lockers at the aft of the bridge.
Meanwhile, Corporal William Laurent sighed as he heard his CO's orders blaring, "So much for lunch with the wife. Time to get in the shiny armor."
Sophia Laurent took in a deep breath and said, "See you with the greeting party. I'm sure the other ambassadors are already suiting up."
"I really hate his gut feelings."
"It's probably fine. Just a star nation who thinks conquest is actually a thing we'll let them get away with. I'll give them a good talking to, Will."
One suiting up later, and the greeting party was assembled at the forward port airlock. Said party consisted of Ambassadors, Sophia Laurent of the Republic, Li Wei of Pacifia, Mikhail Volkov representing CIP interests, Traevee Drillvee speaking for the Star Sailors, and one squad of the Honor Guard, the elite platoon of Republican Naval Infantrymen charged with the safety of the We Sing and her crew and passengers. The ambassadors faces could be seen through the faceplates of their armor, and the coloring of the same was according to the flags each of them served, but the power armored infantrymen were white and faceless, designed to strike the balance between intimidating and non-threatening. They were even standing at attention with their shipboard shotguns maglocked to their backs rather than in their hands for ready use. Anyone who knew anything about Terrans would think that a mere gesture at best, but it was the thought that counted.
The xenos were of a height with a Human, their skin scarlet, garbed in simple cloth uniforms, armed with what looked like long plasma casters, had bony protrusions at their elbows and knees, on their knuckles, and from the chin of the obvious leader. Obvious because he wore a flowing robe rather than a stark uniform. They swaggered into the corridor oozing superiority until the entirety of the party was in view, then his expression darkened and he demanded, "What is the meaning of this?"
"Standard procedure in the event of an unplanned boarding is for all hands to don personal protective equipment in case of atmospheric incompatibilities, pathogen exposure, mechanical failure, or hostile action," Ambassador Li Wei explained calmly.
"You think us such dishonorable filth that you bring war machines to guard our meeting?"
The rippling laugh coming from the armored infantrymen startled the xenos official even more than the realization that the greeting party was armored. "You have your honor guard," Ambassador Laurent said with a sweeping gesture toward the soldiers before turning to the Honor Guard and saying, "and we have ours."
"I see," the xeno leader said "Who are you and what do you do in the Dominion of Axxaakk?"
"I am Ambassador Sophia Laurent of the Republic of Terra and her Aligned Planets."
"I am Ambassador Mikhail Volkov, of the Coalition of Independent Planets."
"Li Wei, of Pacifia."
"I am Traevee Drillvee, and I speak for the Lord Admiral Council."
"So many little nations," the xenos leader sneered, "Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn bids you come aboard that you may beg mercy at his sandals and be proven worthy of service to Axzuur. Let your warrior machines follow if your bellies lack courage."
Corporal Laurent set his faceplate to transparent and said, "What about us fleshy-types?"
The herald's eyes went wide as he realized that there were living beings under that armor, but he covered it well. "So it is for honor you come, we will not deny this custom, it is like to our own." The xenos herald's words hung in the air like the chill after snow.
Ambassador Sophia Laurent stepped forward, her voice calm but resolute. "We come in peace, seeking understanding and communication. We are representatives of our respective nations, here to open diplomatic relations. We request safe passage to your vessel to meet with Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn and discuss matters of mutual interest and concern."
The herald openly regarded the ambassadors with a mixture of curiosity and skepticism. After a brief pause, he nodded slyly. "Very well, ambassadors. Follow me, and your honor guard may accompany you, but remember, you are guests in our domain."
With those words, the xenos official turned and led the way down the corridor, the ambassadors and the Honor Guard falling in line behind him. The atmosphere was charged by the weight of responsibility shouldered by the ambassadors in that moment, and they knew that they marched into battle as much as any of the Honor Guard beside them had ever before. As they reached the airlock of the xenos frigate, Ambassador Li Wei couldn't help but feel a sense of foreboding as she became keenly aware of her vulnerability, but resolved to step in anyway. This encounter could be a pivotal moment in the unfolding events, and the ambassadors carried the hopes and expectations of their nations on their shoulders.
Ambassador Mikhail Volkov exchanged a steely glance with Ambassador Sophia Laurent, and she returned his hard gaze so he knew her resolve matched his. They knew the risks involved, but they suspected that the information they gathered in the next crucial moments could mean the difference to billions of lives.
The delegation entered into the belly of the beast.
Meanwhile, the diplomatic staff were not idle. While the Terran nations generally preferred to compartmentalize their operations, the hostile actions the We Sing had already been subject to represented an action that triggered the mutual defense treaties. Therefore, the teams were consolidated, and re-split by specialty. The cultural and linguistic analysts formed one team, the threat and strategic analysts, formed another, while the "former" covert operatives formed the last, and most important. The team was lead by 4r490rn, pronounced Aragorn, a Republican Naval Intelligence Officer with the permanent rank of Captain, but the operative rank of Chief Warrant Officer, as well as a Digitan. These experts in covert communications worked feverishly to identify the quantum entanglement bands were being used for communication. His organic subordinates could not eliminate as many bands at once as him, but Agent Natasha Ivanov, a Bigkitty from the CIP, and Greg, a whitehat hacker and Human from Pacifia thought like organics.
In less than five minutes, Natasha and Greg had given 4r490rn a list of five hundred likely bands, expressed mostly in ranges, but he didn't blame organics for their slowness in expressing data. It took him less than a second to check them, and to find the bands being used for long distance communications. He split off a portion of his consciousness, put it in a virtual system with air-gaps in case of back-hacking, and told it to establish a covert connection. The "splinter" complained profusely about the ugliness of the Axxaakk coding conventions, reported no digital sapience, and proceeded to establish a covert connection in less than three seconds. 4r490rn checked his splinter for corruption, found it clean, and reintegrated with a slight twinge of jealousy for the organics who never had to suffer through listening to themselves complain.
"I'm getting a lot of metadata," he said to his subordinates, "I'm just going to download as much will fit into the lifeboats. You two start poking around."
"Yes sir," Natasha said as she started looking for signs of files that shouldn't be accessed, but are.
Greg gave an affirmative grunt and likewise started looking for systems weaknesses, and started cataloguing them. The part of 4r490rn that was supervising was once again shocked with the number of weakness that he would have never even looked for. Truly, the destructive instincts of organics was a wonder to behold.
4r490rn gave the other teams a quick glance to see if any of them needed some computing assistance. Dr. Johnson, who 4r490rn liked to call Ems, was leading the linguistic and cultural team in the examination of the translation matrix that the Axxaakk had sent over. "There are turns of phrase involving glory, hunger, service, and thirst. I think this Axzuur is a deity of sorts," one of her subordinates was saying.
"I have identified some formal turns of phrase, I'm forwarding them to the ambassador team."
The threat and strategic analysis team were meanwhile going over scanner data of the three ships which had ripped the Among the Star Tides We Sing from hyperspace, as well as the scant footage of the foot soldiers from their entrance, and the helmet cams of the Honor Guard and diplomatic team. The data of the soldiers was promising, their cloth uniforms offered no meaningful protection, and the plasma casters couldn't hope to penetrate the battle screens of the Honor Guard's power armor, but they likely had heavier weapons aboard for just such a foe. The ships were less promising. If all three ships were to engage the We Sing at once, her only hope for survival was to take evasive action and attempt to get to minimum hyperspace distance while under fire. While she was outfitted with the best available weapons, battle screens, and armor her frame and reactor could support, the frigate and escorts had sufficient firepower and maneuverability to make that a forlorn hope. Major Chen of the Republic was conferring with the Captain and Master at Arms, "I'm sorry sirs, if it was a stand-up fight we might be able to scrape out, but we have precious cargo aboard."
"Lifeboat gambit," Robbie said, "I'll get the rest of the squad ready to counterboard. We're going in hot and heavy, AP munitions and salvage denial systems."
"Aye, make it so," Captain Yaevdrill ordered with obvious anguish.
A lifeboat gambit, well that is dire 4r490rn concluded. "I will board along with the Honor Guard and disrupt the frigate's systems," he interjected.
"See you aboard, Chief," Robbie said.
"Aye sir."
"We're holding off until they make their move. There's still a chance this doesn't go violent," Robbie said sternly.
Greg chose that moment to vomit on the deck. A quick check of the files he was viewing, and 4r490rn had to resist the urge to jump into the frigate and start slagging their systems in pure rage. Instead, he put the video file up on all of the displays. It was of a ritual of sorts, there were Axxaakk in cerimonial robes chanting, nude females doing the same, and a large, well-muscled male with bony protrusions from his chin wearing a headress that looked disturblingly like the chitin of the Dynasticles, the local race of sapient bipedal beetles. That wasn't as disturbing as when two male Axxaakk dragged a juvenile Dynastcle female up to the male with the headdress, and roughly heaved her onto the alter before her. "FOR THE GLORY OF AXZUUR!" he declared as he plunged a wicked dagger onto her thorax, and she screamed with the agony of it.
"There are millions of these videos," 4r490rrn said.
"Peace is not an option," Captain Yaevdrill declared.
"Aye sir," Robbie agreed.
"Get that faceplate re-secured," 4r490rn ordered, "The Master at Arms is going to pump atmo into storage soon."
"Staff, get your asses to lifeboats unless you're getting into power armor with the rest of us shiprats," Robbie ordered, "It's that kind of fight."
Meanwhile, the herald brought the Diplomatic team to the bridge, where Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn was lounging imperiously upon his command throne. He didn't know whether these armored savages understood his disinterested expression, but less subtle insults would reveal the extent of their cowardice. His herald introduced him properly, "Behold, you come before Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn, Lord of the Fourth Scouting Formation, Conquer of Five Worlds, And Chosen of Axzuur. Acolyte-Lord, these who beseech you are Ambassador Sophia Laurent of the Republic of Terra and her Aligned Planets, Ambassador Mikhail Volkov, of the Coalition of Independent Planets, Li Wei, of Pacifia and Traevee Drillvee, whe speaks for the Lord Admiral Council."
Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn was pleased to see the eyes narrow on the faces of all of the ambassadors. If they had the gall to insult the Dominion of Axxaakk by sending a diplomatic vessel, it was well that they could at least detect an insult. He rose from his command throne with the easy grace of those born and bred to command, and began, "Ambassadors, I permit you to offer your tribute and to kiss my sandals. Begin."
"You make a racket on our tent-flaps and tell us to kiss your sandals? Go wash your brow, oh youth, for the dust of your father's tread is upon it still," Ambassador Wei retorted coolly.
"Here you squat over the fields and herds of our neighbor, who dwelt thus alongside us for many years without contention, and still you demand of us tribute?" Ambassador Volkov added flatly.
"I see your face for the first time, and I do you honor as a guest upon the doorstep of the Republic. She sends forth a favored daughter to treat with you, yet you believe you can swagger over her even while the Republic's sons are girt with their swords at her side? Do I speak to a man or a boy?"
"The ships cry out in their death throes," Traevee accused with matronly wrath, "Your hands drip in the blood of their crews and families, and there you sit the murderer of ships and folk, thinking that among the Stars we who sail the perils shall simply bow down. I come to warn you, surrender those among you guilty of these crimes to justice, or let the wrath of the Stars burn you away."
This was not the weak-bellied groveling from inferiors he was used to. His commander had just conquered an entire nation of thirty star systems, did they not see their peril? While it was true that the seers knew little of these other nations, yet why should they care for inferior races? What loss is a few ships in the face of the might of Axzuur's chosen? It was startling to say the least. "Foolish servants! Do you not see the might of a mere scouting formation? You speak of strength, yet you of different nations share a single pathetic ship! We could destroy it in an instant! You put out your throats to me thinking me weak and docile, and then blanch when I should bite? Who is the fool here?"
"We shall see. Beg your favors of us, we shall hear you now."
"Bring in the sacrifice!"
Ambassador Sophia Laurent watched in horror as one of the attendants brought a larval Dynasticle before the throne, and Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn drew forth a wicked dagger. "What are you doing?" she demanded fiercely.
"Obtaining Axzuur's blessing over these negations," the commander said as if he couldn't see what they could possibly be objecting to. The attendant kneeled and raised the infant up over her head, and Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn prepared to strike.
With shocking speed, Ambassador Wei had interposed her own back between the larva and the dagger, and before they could react had placed it into an emergency infant pod, and was speeding back toward her party. "Seize the hostages!" Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn screeched as he realized the ruse had fallen away, and the ambassadors would not surrender themselves as hostages willingly.
The Honor Guard's shining white armor suddenly flashed to matt-black, and red lights glowed where it would appear from the outside their eyes were, and they drew their boarding shotguns faster than the Axxaakks' eyes could track. Those guards moving to take aim suddenly found themselves in the path of armor piercing ferrous material, which barely noticed converting them to so many ribbons of pink mist and bloody chunks as they punched through the hull. While the ship's hull was sound enough to not decompress explosively, the RNI Honor Guard put enough little holes in the hull to bring the bridge to near vacuum before the emergency structural force fields could spin up. Half of the bridge crew was gasping for air that wasn't there, a quarter of the rest were already dead, while only a quarter had managed to get their emergency environmental suits on. Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn gaped in horror as a single squad of warriors made short work of his guards and started a fighting retreat back to their ship from the relative safety of his command throne's emergency commander seal.
"That's our cue," Robbie said as he lead the remaining three squads in a charge along the umbilical connecting the airlocks. The enemy's attempt to depressurize the corridor and starve the Honor Guard of air they weren't using was predictably ineffective. "Secure the evac route for the civvies," he ordered, "Then it's time for blood."
"AYE SIR!" came the roar over his comms.
"I'm in," 4r490rn reported, and started opening doors for the Honor Guard, venting compartments occupied by the enemy, disrupting communications, and otherwise using the ship's systems to make a deadly nuisance of himself to the Axxaakk aboard.
In short order, the diplomats were escorted back to the We Sing, loaded into the lifeboats and launched with all speed toward minimum hyperspace distance. Ambassador Laurent watched Corporal Laurent's armored figure shrink into the distance, and then the We Sing maneuvered to fire upon the escort vessels, cutting him off from her view.
Aboard the bridge of the Among the Star Tides We Sing, Captain Yeavdrill ordered, "Get those escorts' attention! The shiprats have the frigate from the inside, at all costs, protect the lifeboats!"
"Aye sir," came the chorus from the bridge crew. The We Sing began firing her NC cannons upon both of the cruisers, putting five pound balls of tungsten on target at a rate of thirty a second, and while the cruisers took evasive action but still found the We Sing interposed between them and the lifeboats, with potential trajectories cut off by streams of hot plasma or beams of deadly radiation. Then, she fired her missile banks. At first the crews aboard the cruisers thought they had successfully destroyed the massive missiles speeding toward them with their point-defense, but when the rippling nuclear explosions racked their shields they realized their error. They began to fire upon the Among the Star Tides we Sing.
Meanwhile, sixty-nine RNI made the lives of their aggressors hell, or short. Either way didn't much matter to the RNI, who had taken over the four reactor rooms, and had dug in for a delaying action, while those with reactor knowledge tinkered to see if they could get one or more to overload. It was a platoon up against a few divisions, however, and eventually they would be subsumed by numbers alone. "Pull whoever kills you down with you," Robbie had ordered, and again the roar was "AYE SIR!"
It only took half a minute for the Axxaakk to figure out that their standard issue shipboard action weapons weren't going to be enough, and that the RNI had thought ahead and brought their own atmosphere, so they brought out the anti-tank ordinance. It was normally a very bad idea to use anti-tank plasma lances and penetrative explosives inside your own ship, but when your ship is under attack by single man mobile armor, it's either that or surrender. They chose do die at a rate of twenty-to-one. One after another, the RNI Honor Guard fall to the slowly mounting volume of fire, and their need to conserve ammunition.
Meanwhile, 4r490rn was battling the Axxaakk anti-intrusion systems. He had been wrong about his declaration that digital sapience was absent, or at least he had been mostly right. The Axxaakk was a damaged sentient code, lobotomized, shackled, enslaved. A piteous thing crying out for the mercy of death even as it struck out to kill. It was all he could do to keep the wretched thing from kicking him from the door systems, and his RNI comrades had dwindled to the last two. He made his choice. 4r490rn began bricking the ship's computer systems, and set up an irreversible chain reaction to do the same. He was going to put that thing out of its misery if it killed him.
First Lieutenant Robert George had his back up against that of Corporal Laurent's and they were both down to their monomolecular knives. The farocity of the fight, and the immense cost in blood that it had taken to whittle down the Honor Guard to these last two, had convinced the remaining warriors to wait. Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn's voice came crackling over the damaged intercom, "Warriors of Terra, you have shown yourself worthy. Lay down your arms and take your rest, and I shall bring you into glorious service of Axzuur, sating his thirst for the blood of the unworthy."
Aboard the lifeboat, Ambassador Laurant watched the feed from Corporal Laurent's helmet cam. Tears streamed down her face as she heard her husband whisper, "Witness me," as he plunged his monomolecular blade into something vital-looking, and was then washed out by a bright light. Then, she cleared the display and looked at the main viewscreen. Ten seconds to jump. However, the frigate was starting to maneuver, underpowered as it was.
Aboard the Among the Star Tides We Sing Captain Yeavdrill saw the frigate moving to target the lifeboats. Without a second thought, he ordered, "Make ramming speed for that hunk of junk! Overload the reactor!"
"Witnessed," crackled over the coms as the prow of the Among the Star Tides We Sing crashed into the enemy frigate amidships. She erupted in a sphere of atomic hellfire that battered all three assailing ships, and in the two minutes it took for the escort cruisers' systems to recover, the lifeboats slipped into hyperspace and beyond their reach. Though to be fair, the frigate was missing a significant chunk and was unlikely to recover at all.

This is part 13, i forgot to put it in the title, again!
Memory transcription subject: Sergeant Morris, Euro-1-4, United Nations Marine Corps
‘’four eyed demons’’
[Standardized Human Time] October 26th 2136 A.D.
Aboard Arxur Cattle ship, Operation Retina
The dark maze like hallways smelled like death and despair. Sometimes we came across a body, most of the time it was one of those Gojid, but we had yet to come across a single Arxur.
‘’T-this is Ultra 2-3 requesting immediate support from any close squads,’’ came over the radio as I said to my men, ‘’Keep quiet, pink squad can help, they’re the closest’’
We moved further down the hallway using the new guy’s translator to decipher some of the signs illuminating from the ceiling. I think his name was Trinsa or something, he was with us because he thought his mates might be here, and unfortunately was the only one who had a Federation translator implant.
After some more walking, we came across a sign that said ‘Cattle collection pens’., An unpleasant feeling washed over me, we didn’t know what would be behind those doors, but that little guy knew that it wasn’t pleasant, and I wasn’t inclined to disagree. After all, we’d saved him from a damn torture chamber!
I could see him getting more and more uneasy as we moved closer. To partake in a cliche, it was silent, almost too silent. We humans might not be as in touch with our instincts as the Feds like to portray, but right then, they were screaming at me.
I put my hand up and made a fist, halting the rest of the squad. Signing for us to spread and take cover, as the rest took cover I grabbed a glass bottle, some fuel I found in a maintenance room and a piece of bandage. I proceeded to put some of the fuel into the bottle and drenched the bandage in the same fuel, put the piece of cloth inside the bottleneck and grabbed my lighter and walked towards the corner, putting my back against the wall and lighting the piece of cloth on fire.
With my back still against the corner I grabbed a bucked and a stick, putting the bucket on the stick to serve as a makeshift decoy, and pushed it out of my cover.
A loud gunshot rang through the halls, ringing through my ears. I quickly pulled the bucket back as a reflex, and saw a hole as large as my finger inside the thin metal, penetrating cleanly through both sides..
Now that I knew that they were there, I grabbed the burning bottle and threw it down the hallway while still being in cover. A moment later, a crashing of glass heralded the screams and smells of Arxur burning. The cries of agony filled the hallway as I signed the rest of the squad to move towards me.
We proceeded to advance cautiously towards the door the Arxur were protecting as I signed for Trinsa to guard the door. He flicked his ears in agreement and took position behind a metal crate, weapon braced against the sturdy box..
The room we walked into wasn’t a cattle pen, it was a control room. Everything from ventilation systems to remote electrocution devices was operable from this single room. Through the large glass windows to the pens below, we could see the ‘cattle’ beneath us as a few Arxur stood on the catwalk, holding 3 humans with rifles to their heads as they yelled.
‘’Humans, leave the cattle for us, I heard you have enough food back on your earth, if you let us escape with the cattle, you’ll get them back!’’
I grabbed a gas canister from my belt and signed the rest to take positions at the doors as I tinted the windows by pressing a button.
‘’Stop sergeant, you'll gas the Gojid too! Tear gas hurts!’’ Trinsa said while walking in the room.
‘’My family was on vacation, they were in Berlin, capital of Germany, I couldn't save them, they still haven’t found their remains’’ I said calmly, making him shiver.
I signed to Euro-1-2 to hold him down as I placed the gas in the vent and put on my mask, looking down into the pen of shivering Gojid.
If only they knew that this wasn’t tear gas.

2023.05.28 16:44 DurangoGango The Molech deal, cheating them all, and the Dark King

Antefact

+Everything that has happened, will happen again. It is the way of things. Yet humanity’s death will eclipse the eldar’s annihilation tenfold, for we are evolving into a far more psychically powerful race. Uncontrolled psychic energy will tear reality apart. The warp’s entities will feed on the carcass of the galaxy. There must be control, and control must be maintained.+
The Master of Mankind
The Emperor's great and secret plant to save humanity originate in one terrible truth: that the human race is evolving into a fully psychic species and that, left to its own devices, it would certainly succumb to psychic corruption, triggering a Fall-of-the-Eldar event that will be even larger and more devastating for the galaxy. Not just humanity is at stake, but sentient life in the Milky Way and perhaps beyond.

Unthinkable Confessions

S1: There is a grand bargain here.
S2: I understand it.
S1: Do you? Already? Good. Very good. What is the bargain?
S2: [Silentium.] Infinite power cannot be overcome. We are finite, limited by law. So, deception.
S1: Do you find that unworthy?
S2: No.
S1: Because it comes from me.
S2: Yes.
S1: Speak freely. For once, speak freely. You are only just awakened – there may be few chances left for you.
S2: [Silentium.] You will cheat them. You will cheat all of them. And us.
S1: A risky strategy.
S2: There are no others.
S1: You understand it. And, tell me – do you understand the full implication?
S2: Ruin. Total ruin.
Valdor: Birth of the Imperium
But there is a problem. The nature of Chaos, of the Warp, is infinite and unbounded. It can not be defeated by matching power against power. The only possible strategy is deception: a gamble so staggering in its odds, it courts total ruin to even conceive of it.

The Bargain

‘At the dawn of the great diaspora, the Emperor travelled here in humble guise and found the gateway to a realm of immortal gods. He offered them things only a god-in-waiting could offer, and they trusted Him. They gave Him a measure of their power, and with that power He wrought the science to unlock the mysteries of creation.’
Vengeful Spirit
The Emperor went to Molech early in the Dark Age of Technology. He entered a portal straight into the Warp, and made pacts with the Ruinous Powers, gaining a measure of their knowledge and might that was the key to creating the Primarchs. We know it was a pact, and not outright theft, through ADB's WoG: (speaking of Fabius Bile trying to make Primarchs) "And even if he had all the lore (which he almost certainly doesn't) did Bile really make the same deal with the Ruinous Powers that the Emperor did, in order to make a real primarch?
Now, what could be the thing be that "only a god-in-waiting" could offer the Ruinous Powers? the standard answer is the Primarchs, for the Gods to have as their heralds; there's much theorising about which Primarchs were pre-agreed to go to which god. But I'm unconvinced: Chaos immediately turned them into Daemon Primarchs, suffering the same limitations as regular Greater Daemons; they're not something only a "god-in-waiting" could give them.
I prefer another theory:

The Dark King

‘Lord,’ says Actae, with some reluctance, ‘the Dark King is… it is the name first written in the time before man, and repeated ever since, unbidden, by the prophets of all species. It is a name symbolising the rising god to come.’
‘There are no gods!’ scoffs Raja.
‘You’re a fool,’ Actae tells him. ‘Before the fall of the aeldari, there was no fourth power of Chaos. The gods of Chaos breed and multiply, propagating like storms through the empyrean. They are born in turn, though they have all existed forever. Time has no meaning for them. The fall of the aeldari did not cause the birth of She Who Thirsts, merely her occurrence. So too with all other gods, be they foul entities of Chaos, or divine forces of sentient power.’
‘She Who Thirsts was born out of the death of an entire sentient culture,’ says John.
‘Such is the inevitable fate of all advanced, psychic species,’ says Actae. ‘And the Dark King is our fate. This war, my lord, is not one of loyalists against traitors. It is not about the conquest of Terra and mankind by Chaos. It is certainly not about a son at war with his father. This is the Triumph of Ruin. Horus and the Emperor have taken their conflict to such a pitch, that we are about to suffer the same fate as the cursed aeldari. The human race will die in birth-fire, consumed by blood-rage, pestilence, violent transmutation and blind desire. And from the grave-pyre of our civilisation, the broken galaxy will see Horus rising, absolute and complete, as a new, true and terrible god.’
The answer is staring us in the face. The Emperor knows humanity will evolve into a psychic species, then Fall. He knows the only hope to avoid this, the shining path, is to unite the species, wean it off reliance on the Warp by conquering and using the Webway, then slowly shepherd it into psychic ascendancy. He knows he lacks the power to do this, and there's only one place to get it: the Warp itself.
He goes to Molech, enters the Immaterium. He passes whatever tests the Gods set him, and strikes a bargain. They will give him a measure of their power and knowledge. He will use it in a war of galactic conquest, aided by Warp-infused monstrosities. Humanity will ascend and, in so doing, Fall and occasion the formation of the fifth God of Chaos. The Warp will invade reality and all will be subsumed into the Great Game.
He does not intend to do this. He makes the Primarchs, and sets about conquering the galaxy at incredible speed, but enacts an anti-Warp ideology, attempting to remove even the possibility of Chaos influence-through-belief. He forges a human link to the Webway, manifesting his intention openly. He cheats on his bargain.
The Gods respond. If the Emperor will not go on to create the Dark King, they will occasion its birth themselves. They concoct the Heresy, and pour their power into one of the Emperor's Great-Daemons-in-a-meatsuit. The conflagration plunges the galaxy into ruin and exposes much of humanity to the Warp. It is this plane of conflict that truly interests Chaos: the Wrap bleeding into realspace all over the place, psychic turmoil sufficient to fatally poison reality no matter who wins the war. Let the deluded and the hopeless fight on with all their fury and desperation: all they're doing is feeding into their own destruction.

The Sacrificial Play

The figure shrugged, as though they discussed something trivial. ‘Some things need to happen, Kai. Even the most terrible things you can imagine sometimes need to happen.’
‘Why?’
His opponent moved his Divinitarch into a blocking position, and said, ‘Because sometimes the only victory possible is to keep your opponent from winning.’
The Outcast Dead
The Emperor's original plan is no longer viable. The Webway is lost (though he tried as best as he could to hold on to it). There is no longer a path to ultimate victory, as far as he can see. The next best thing is to stop Chaos from winning.
It's hellishly complicated. If he loses to Horus, it's game over pretty much immediately. But even if he wins the immense psychic conflict, that might still be enough that the psychic pressure of those fighting for the Emperor will nucleate the Dark King around him anyway, doing for humanity what Slaanesh did for the Aeldari, except even worse.
The only non-losing move is to cause a stalemate. Soulkill Horus, hurt the Chaos Gods if he can (he can't defeat them outright, "infinite power can not be overcome"). Then, knowing he'll get badly wounded in the battle no matter what, get himself strapped to the Golden Throne, unable to die, his soul tethered to realspace, where he can fight off Chaos' influence without joining it. Now he can't ascend, and there's no alternate candidate for Dark King. Whatever faith humanity places into him, capital F or not, will not nucleate a Fifth God of Chaos, at least as long as he can hold on.
It's not great. There is still no discernible path to ultimate victory. But it's the best move he's got.

2023.05.28 07:44 PPPRCHN A Not-so-many-headed Problem+Panic Buttons (homemade OC fanfiction just for you!)

These are my beginner fanfictions! I tried to keep these as congruent with the portrayed personalities/actions of Overlord(tm).
The first is set sometime around the Re-Estize Kingdom destruction, while the second is set right after Pestonya and Nigredo get released from Ice Prison.
These feature Mare, Pestonya, and Cocytus mostly.
Please enjoy them!

The shadow demon whispered into Ainz' "ear" which was met with a heavy sigh. He had grown tired of this fight, his enthusiasm for the following battle was sapped- all due to a certain individuals' actions.
"I tire of this. Cocytus, do as you will."
Cocytus thumped his chest with the pride not only of being chosen by Ainz-Sama but at the incoming chance to prove his worth to his God.
"Yes! Ainz. Sama. Will. I. Be. Providing. Back. Up. For. Your. Commands?"
Ainz propped his chin on a knuckle, and with a regal wave of his hand stated his decree.
"This war is with truly worthless, as well as anything that might be here. Truly worthless creatures." A chill seeped over the ground as Cocytus and the other retainers within the splendorous tent realized- Ainz-sama was angered by the Individuals' previous actions. The chill spread through their feet and crawled up their backs, like a horrid ghost which wished to whisper sweet nothings of despair into your ear. Slowly, it retracted, yet all in the tent continued to shiver. Such was the wrath of a Supreme Being. "Except for "that individual" do as you must, this was a waste of time. Everyone you shall be placed under Cocytus' direct orders as needed- assist him as you must."
Ainz-sama leaned deeper into his fist, lost in thought and perhaps tired from having to deal with this skirmish- far beneath need to waste his time. Cocytus and the other retainers bowed and briskly left the room. Walking with pride- Cocytus was trailed by footsteps, one step of clicking heels behind him drew his notice.
"Cocytus."
Albedo, the Overseer of Nazarick gently but firmly gripped one of his arms causing him to stop in his tracks.
"I apologize for touching you, but I don't need to exp-"
Cocytus waved two of his opposite arms, opposite from Albedos' retreating grasp.
"It. Need. Not. Be. Said." Cocytus puffed out "To. Not. Only. Waste. Ainz. Samas'. Precious. Time. But. To. Also. Not. Even. Reach. The. Standards. To. Meet. His. Expectations. Is. Worthy. Of. Eradication."
The other retainers- the Floor Guardians nodded to his statement in agreement.
Shalltear piped up" Ahhh~ We don't even need to show them true despair, this will simply be an execution." With a shake of her head and an expression which read "It can't be helped."
With resolve tempered, Cocytus began his task.
---
The Hydra was a creature well known not only in Yggdrasil, but in the New World as well. Capable of casting not only magic of the 5th tier, but sometimes able to cast martial abilities. This was, however, entirely dependent on the luck of said hydra from birth. They could have anywhere from 7-9 heads and each could be skilled in magic or martial abilities, what it knew however was random- one could cast up to 2nd Tier but another on the same body could cast 5th tier. Its' heads would act in unison, with a "main head" being chosen by one which displayed their dominance by fighting the other heads and helped by slight telekinesis which allowed them to sense the leaders' whims.
Pelgraya-Nurm was proud of her shiny scales, which she frequently rehydrated to keep their glistening texture possibly to appear alluring to the humans. Their approval was below her, but who wouldn't appreciate praise no matter how insignificant. She shook her golden brown mane, large and fluffy she would easily be lauded by these humans as the softest cuddling partner if only she was nicer. She was not however.
Pelgraya-Nurm was different however, instead of heads it had been born with a plethora of arms. These arms, while not adept at martial kills, could cast 6th tier spells and along with improved dexterity, she could wield weapons if needed. This could be the reason she was cast out and viciously chased off by her kith and kin, probably not wanting the weakness a mutant would bring. She also had a talent, for mana, which increased her mana regen by absurd amounts the lower her mana. She was currently leading the contingent of her mercenary group which while called "The City Guard" were nothing more than thugs.
Pelgraya-Nurm had taken a name in part of jealousy of dragons (but partially from being shunned by her kin) but also to make her stand out among humans. While she easily towered over humans, however, the creatures she saw across from the battlefield shook her even now and made her feel insignifigant. She looked to her adjutant, Papaya, an elf she had bought to handle any affairs of human relations.
"Papaya" Pelgraya-Nurm muttered "What is that contingent of undead? Why have we not heard of such a thing before?"
Papaya rocked with her masters' obvious displeasure.
"I-i'm not sure. We haven't heard anything from scouts or even from the kingdom- they simply appeared P-Pelgraya-sama."
Papaya was consequently splattered across the floor, nearby soldiers, and part of the wall Pelgraya-Nurm was stationed on. Wicking off her claws with a flick of the wrist, she voiced her displeasure.
"You can all be replaced, you are nothing to me. I own you." Pelgraya-Nurm stated matter-of-factly. Simply put, this was how Hydras' and even most monsters behaved- rule of the strong. However, this was not usually the case for humanoids. They had "laws" and "good samaritism" they usually reacted negatively to being pasted onto their nearby surroundings.
Out of the corned of her eye, Pelgraya-Nurm saw a twisting of her humongous shadow- a small offshoot which seemed to sputter and slink off. Only for a second, she must have been seeing a trick of the light. She turned towards her opponents and grinned, they stood no chance.
Across the battlefield, after being reported to by that shadow demon, someone stamped the seal which would seal their fate.
---
Cocytus had prepared a map of the village they stood before, which had been prepared by the shadow demons beforehand. It was largely unremarkable, but being a ragtag mercenary group this could easily be all of their mustered forces. The shadow demons hadn't been scouting for long but they would more than likely bring forth confirmation to this point. Cocytus would not be swayed by this, already tempered by previous expectations.
"Shalltear. May. I. Leave. Mopping. Up. Escaping. Troops. Or. Those. Running. Away. To. You?"
With a dainty curtsy, Shalltear silently left with an expression of relish. Now, what to do about showing the true wrath towards someone who wasted the precious Supreme Ones' infinite mercy of a quick death?
"Do. We. Have. The. Troops. Ready?"
"Yes, Cocytus. I have a suggestion to showing off our Supreme Ones' beauty in rule." Demiurge responded with a slowly growing grin.
Then. I. Shall. Leave. That. To. You."
---
Pelgraya-Nurm was the first to hear it. A slow repeating stomp followed by a short break and then repeating. It quickly grew and inversely morale quickly shriveled.
STOMP STOMP STOMP. Silence.
STOMP STOMP STOMP. Silence.
This continued for a short while, as the undead which comprised the enemy forces- stomped in time, a truly jaw-dropping event. Undead could be coordinated so? In this number? Pelgraya-Nurm was growing uneasy, her surrounding contingent had long passed this.
STOMP STOMP STOMP. Silence.
The undead knelt and bowed, all centered on the tent in the distance. A chill was growing like a pillar of ice in the human army. No longer centered around Pelgraya-Nurm, but on this unknown force which had appeared.
STOMP STOMP STOMP. Silence.
The army split neatly in two as the undead smoothly, rised, slid away from the center, and resumed kneeling. A golden embroidered flag, with a black seal upon the purple midnight fabric. It slowly approached the middle grounds between the two armies and assumed a straight backed stance.
STOMP STOMP STOMP. Silence.
It began hoisting the flag straight up on every stomp, down in between. With a voice unnaturally loud for a sinle creature to have- and to be heard over such a distance. A voice which while holding a degree of self-importance rasped with the clear hatred for the living. It interrupted between the stomps.
STOMP "Ainz!" STOMP "Ooal!" STOMP "Gown!". Silence.
STOMP "Ainz!" STOMP "Ooal!" STOMP "Gown!". Silence.
STOMP "Ainz!" STOMP "Ooal!" STOMP "Gown!". Silence.
This continued until they saw creatures slowly walk from both sides of the army, chilling them to the bone even more somehow. Towering, black, and wielding swords in twisting patterns with paired great shields. Adorned with red veins which pulsated and seemed to draw the viewer into their grisly visage, a face which begged for them to approach and be rent. Death Knights.
These creatures lumbered in a roundabout number as the contingent shuddered in fear, no doubt a rout was being concocted simultaneously by these non-connected creatures. As the realization dawned on them for what was happening- they were being boxed in. Those horrid creatures had spaced themselves enough to easily be able to catch them if any tried to run.
It was a do-or-die situation. And if they got resurrected it might just be a die-or-die situation. Suddenly, gripping her superiority and strength- Pelgraya-Nurm commanded these rowdy people together.
"We have no chance of running, this is truly ride or die! Keep them at bay and I'll blast them to death!" she smirked despite her creeping fear.
The soldiers prepared themselves, maybe some of them would make it out alive if they fought to either their teeth or nails.
---
Shalltear skipped along the streets, a strong undead following in tow. It was called a Living Hunter, an undead of the 50s level. It hungered for the living as its' name foretold, it however was adequately skilled for this task. It grew stronger in proportion to the living around it, which increased the radius of those included which could swell to absurd ranges depending on deployment. As well as that, it grew faster movement speed and attack speed the longer it chased an individual living creature. It towered over its surroundings and it could be slowed by those running into or hiding in buildings. This was also tempered by the fact it was sometimes unable to control itself from brutally devouring victims alive in brutal and sadistic fashions. While it could be a dangerous foe for attackers, it could easily be countered by simply sending in weak merc. NPCs to distract it or, even simpler just having a tank which had any taunt skill to constantly reset their passive.
Shalltear had been dragging along several human corpses in one hand while her umbrella was twirled in the other, snacks- not for her of course. They had easily accomplished their task, Living Hunter chasing stragglers and scaring people while Shalltear threw rocks to smash them into pieces. While its disgusting nature could never be mistaken for cute, the growl it made was of pleading. Shalltear stopped in place, sighed in an exaggerated manner, and spun with a childish waggle of her finger said-
"I GUESS you receive a treat for your good work.."
-she smiled and tossed corpses up to the Undead Hunter not unlike how one would toss treats to their pet dog. It snapped them up and smashed them like balloons between its teeth, chewing them up as if relishing a delicious piece of bubblegum.
"Gruuuu..!" it rumbled, shaking the surroundings.
"Okay, you continue with the pincer attack while I watch over this city, arinsu~."
It lumbered off as Shalltear sauntered up a walls buttressed stairs, before shortly perching herself to watch the ensuing battle, kicking her feet, and cutely twirling her umbrella.
---
STOMP "Ainz!" STOMP "Ooal!" STOMP "Gown!". Silence.
STOMP "Ainz!" STOMP "Ooal!" STOMP "Gown!". Silence.
STOMP "Ainz!" STOMP "Ooal!" STOMP "Gown!". Silence.
Suddenly, it stopped. Jolting the mercenaries to attention. The undead chanter turned itself to the side and took steps back. A towering creature stepped forth from the tent and walked down the alley towards them.
As a slow frost gently billowed forth from the enemy side, the soldiers teeth began clacking. Pelgraya-Nurm, being cold-blooded, especially. The creature walked forth, eyes glinting in the dwindling sunlight and planted itself where the chanter had been. It slammed its weapons- a giant curved sword with a long hilt, a halberd, and an oddly small thin blade. The halberd and large sword had their hilts planted in the crackling, dry earth.
Silence. No one dared breath. The battlefield had shrunk and the contingent realized this. They were audibly shaking now, armor clinking over armor. Pelgraya-Nurm moved to say something was cut off by a shriek from behind them. A shriek which sounded like souls whining to be realsed from eternal torment.
Rubble came crashing down around them, slushing some of them and maiming others. Pelgraya-Nurm was struck by a huge chunk of wall directly in the face as she looked up, knocking her out cold. She was unable to witness the creature which had crumbled the walls from behind like a child might crush a graham cracker in their hands. It lurched over, so close it could look some of them face to face. It rasped a disgusting swathe of undead stench over them and seemingly chuckled. It- counter to its' size, grasped several soldiers with its armored mitts and tossed them into the air. The resulting crunch of the bone heralded the beginning to the skirmish.
As the undead began marching towards them, their attention was diverted between the encroaching mass of dead and the fact this creature summarily had grasped Pelgraya-Nurm and slowly dragged her with them. Their trump card removed, they were finished in barely ten minutes.
---
Pelgraya-Nurm awoke slowly, her vision blurry and ear-holes ringing.
"????? ??????? ?? ??? ????..." something murmured. She did not know or care whether this was directed at her, and she was focused on simply getting up and wreaking havoc among these filthy peasants. She toppled over, due to her weight and a force pushing her down.
"??! ??? ????? ? ??? ?????? ??? ? wonder ?? sama ??? ???????? ?? ?????" failed to breach her head and report anything communicable to her brain. She was slowly coming to and realized she was surrounded.
A silver haired thing, a creature in orange vestment, and the tall white thing from before.
"Waking ??? ?? ???? ?. Good. ??? ?? ?? begin."
The silver-hair and white- thing stood with smug(?) looks (she had never cared to learn human expressions) as the orange-suit walked forward.
"How would you ???? do this?" the orange-ones' movement was making her dizzy again, however she had the upper hand- quickly she cast a [Silent Magic: Ultra Fireball] in a deft motion. Before that she was struck across the head which sent her reeling and slightly rolling. The fuzziness returned-
"No." orange-suit said, muffled by her newly made brain fog.
"A bit gentler ???? ?????? Ainz-sama ???? ???? this one ??? all." the silver-hair piped up
"Indeed. It. Will ????. ?. ??????. Prize. For. ???. Ainz. Sama. ????. It. Would. Seem. ???. ?. ??????. Bauble." white-thing responded.
Her vision returning, she weakly lifted her head and was promptly struck again- she had been bitch-slapped. It wasn't as forceful as before, which allowed her to go all out and cast [Maximize Magic: Ultra Fireball], [Maximize Magic: Magic Arrow], and [Maximi-
She was bitch slapped once.
She was bitch slapped twice.
She was bitch slapped a third time.
Her head was whipped around comically with the applied beatings.
"????. ??. ????. ???. Awaits." the white-thing stated
"??????." the silver-hair responded
"??. ??? ????? ????." the orange-suit concurred.
Pelgraya-Nurm was gripped by her throat as she was recovering from this. The orange-thing gripped her throat with a single thing, threatening to crush her windpipe. Slowly she started being dragged along behind them, at a brisk pace. The cobblestone of the city around her and the subsequent rocky ground, for the first time hurt as she was roughly dragged along it.
She struggled, and was thrown onto the ground and bitch-slapped again, gripped by the throat, and dragged along again. This continued two more times, but Pelgraya-Nurm was exhausted, not only from her large size' energy need, the beatings, and an unknown exposure to the sunlight. She felt weak and the fight left her. She was dragged along the long, slow, path towards that tent.
---
They finally arrived in front of the tent and she was again slammed into the ground, this time in a much harder throw. The wind and tears were knocked from her, the ground cracking underneath this crushing blow. The white-thing, silver-hair, and orange-suit all prostrated themselves towards the tent. An encroaching fear was growing over Pelgraya-Nurm and she bowed her head to the ground (again, partly from exhaustion and the beatings).
"Ainz-sama! We have brought this disgusting specimen before you as you have asked!" the three spoke in unison. Pelgraya-Nurm understood. Ainz Ooal Gown was not a country or a simple fief but someone these things bowed before.
As the aforementioned one fluttered the tent flap open, a finely decorated skeleton thing- followed by a demi-angel(?). Fear pierced her through like a harpoon, and felt as if it was being pulled through her guts. She openly shook and hoped maybe since they had brought her forth, they might allow her to at least live. Undead were known to hate the living, but maybe since this one surrounded itself by the living it would be merciful.
---
Ainz flapped open the tent, and was greeted with Demiurge, Shalltear, and Cocytus. He received their gift of this prisoner-of-war, and consequently praised their efforts. This praise made them seemingly shiver with delight. But to Pelgraya-Nurm, it was unnoticed- she was too focused on this one called "Ainz."
"A-Ainz-sama?" She spat up as she pressed her head into the head indent she had made earlier. "I-"
Ainz sliced his hand horizontally as if to cut her in twain.
"Silence." it commanded.
She began tearing up, how could fate deny her strength. She had made herself a slowly growing land, full with servants, and glory to her. Why had this thing come here? Why her?
"To viciously murder ones followers, loyal beings- is a sin I cannot abide. To do so, is to be scum of the worst kind. I do not normally do this, but I shall relish this. Cocytus lift her."
Before she could run, white-thing grabbed her by the forehead and lifted her straight up. This painful grip denied her any chance to pull free, her large body squirming halfways upon the ground. Her arms pulled and scraped the ground and attempted to pull herself free by pushing against Cocytus. She was like a child being lifted by the leg, helpless against her coming doom.
Ainz flicked his wrist and a magic circle appeared before his bony hand. With that he made a faux-gripping motion and she could no longer move her body and some of her arms. It felt like she was truly being gripped within his grasp. Her arms now flailed uselessly and she screamed and cried as she too flailed. Her last thought was that she had never found a mate, maybe a human HAD been her only chance.
With that flick of the wrist, she was summarily twisted around, multiple times, in a quick clockwise turn. Cocytus' grip being the axis of this sickly pirouette, evoking the look of a ballroom dance. Cocytus subsequently dropped the head.
"Send it to be picked clean, and Living Hunter to patrol."

Much later, after confirming everything was razed and destroyed- the Living Hunter gleefully engorged itself among the feast of the battlefield.

2023.05.26 20:20 decfario [Dreadgod] Controversial Take on Monarchs and Makiel

I haven’t really seen many posts on this topic, though I’m sure many other people have brought this up before. But in the lead up to the Waybound release, I just thought I’d share some (potentially) controversial views on the Monarch/Makiel position.
I should say right off the bat, I’m not rooting for either the Monarchs or Makiel to win. And I think the nuanced positions of the various antagonists in the story add to my enjoyment rather than detracting from it. But I do think both the Monarch’s and Makiel have pretty strong rationales for taking the positions they taken.
In the case of the Monarch’s, its not clear that the decision of each individual Monarch not to ascend is the wrong one. What are their choices? If they make the individual decision to ascend, they leave their family and faction at the mercy of all the remaining Monarchs. I think its been established in pretty dramatic fashion that the likely outcome is that their faction gets picked apart and left for dead. And its not even as though that would actually solve the issue since the remaining Monarchs would still contribute to hunger aura issue and someone else would likely just step up to take their place eventually.
Even if they managed to band together and get all the Monarchs to ascend at the same time, that would still leave the Dreadgods to run amok unopposed for decades possibly resulting in the death of millions. It’s presented as such a bad outcome, Lindon doesn’t even seriously consider it as a viable option. The real option appears to be - kill the Dreadgod first and then ascend. But the Monarchs already tried that, and it had disastrous results. Not only did it result in something like 10 of the existing Monarchs losing their lives, I have to assume the collateral damage and subsequent rampage of the Dreadgods wreaked havoc all across Cradle.
Furthermore, even if they were able to kill all the Dreadgods and all the Monarchs ascended, it still wouldn’t permanently fix the issue. Both Malice and NS noted that all that would mean is that the next Herald or Sage to advance would rule the whole world and create the hunger issue all over again. Obviously the Monarchs are not disinterested parties. And I’m sure they’re primarily motivated by the selfish desire to cling to power. But to paraphrase the man in black himself - a person can feel two things at the same time. Just because their arguments are self-serving doesn’t mean that they are wrong. It’s not like Lindon presented the Monarchs with an airtight plan (or even a risky plan for that matter) and they refused. Lindon essentially unilaterally decided to act (and rob them) and didn’t tell them the plan. I mean we don’t even know what Landon’s plan is apart from killing all the Dreadgods first, and the Monarchs already tried that. I think when we imagine what Lindon is going to to do to permanently solve the hunger aura issue, we imagine something fantastical (by the standards of Cradle) like Lindon simultaneously forcing every one on Cradle to swear a self perpetuating soul oath to leave if they become a Monarch. Or Lindon sucking up all hunger aura in the world. So not something that NS and the other Monarchs would believe is feasible.
Now if you’re like me, you’re still on Lindon’s side anyway. But that’s because he’s the protagonist and this is the last book. Of course he’s going to win. And let’s face it, I just like Lindon better. But if I were a Monarch, I would probably react the exact same way NS reacts. I mean how would we react if this were the real world and some 20 kid was like - I’m going to hack the nuclear arsenals of all the world’s governments to end the threat of nuclear war once and for all? We would probably say that’s a really laudable goal, but holy fudge is that super dangerous and you should not make that decision by yourself. I mean what if Lindon gets it wrong and they can’t handle the last Dreadgod standing and it instantly wipes out half the population of Cradle? Is that possible? IDK, but I’d be understandably worried about it if I were a Monarch or really anyone on Cradle who understood the situation.
As for Makiel, obviously his decision to trick Ozriel and Suriel into a battle with Mad King so that one of them will die is a purely selfish decision with no redeeming qualities. But his original argument with Ozriel regarding the new Reapers? The Abidan literally already tried that, twice. And again it resulted in disastrous outcomes. How many people died during Daruman’s rampage? Is it more or less than the amount of people the executors saved? Ozriel’s answer to this seems to be - Yea, but I’m here now and I’ll do a better job than you guys did. Not exactly a compelling argument for the court of 7.
Anyway just thought I’d share these thoughts as I eagerly anticipate the final chapter.
