Me and my wife met in downtown New braunfels 5 years ago, we got married in October. We moved to Galveston for her school and work for 4 years, and we hated it. We worked really hard in horrible jobs to scrape a savings, hoping maybe to own a home soon. We gave up on that months ago, but the idea of renting close enough to downtown NB to walk (like a 20 minute walk or so) has been our consolation, so we thought. We both locked down good, professional jobs; we haven't started yet but have solid offer letters. We've offered to pay three months up front. Our credit scores are 720-745. We have a great rental referral. We just can't settle in an apartmen, weve tried before and we hate it. There's no reason with our income we shouldn't be able to rent a small house. We've seen several in town, but for some reason we always get passed up. We saw a cute little duplex, and in the three hours between when we scheduled the viewing and when we got there someone else came In and filled out an application right out from under us. We cut our memorial day weekend plans short to come into town and view the most gorgeous little house near the comal. We paid to put in applications on zillow on Sunday before we ever saw the house. It was absolutely perfect, it was our dream home. During the viewing the landlady says "she has five other showings today, but we are good candidates with the only application in right now". That was two days ago; last I saw there were 8 other applications submitted and the house is no longer posted for rent.
We have almost 90k in yearly income and we've completely given up on owning a home; now it looks like we won't even be able to rent one in our favorite little city. It's just heartbreaking. I don't understand why we keep getting passed up for rentals.

Ok so I got this letter that said that because roads have a 50 year lifespan, and many in OP are approaching that at the same time, they need to raise an additional 28.5 million annually from sales tax (because 100% of sales tax goes to infrastructure).
To raise this money, they want to take the sales tax from 1/8th to 3/8ths, an increase of 2/8ths. If an increase of 2/8ths is required to raise 28.5 million, that implies the current 1/8ths tax raises 14.25 million for infrastructure, and that they will require 42.75 million each year to pull this off.

42.75 million dollars divided by 197 thousand people gets $216.89 paid in sales tax annually, per person. If the sales tax is 3/8th, that means you'd need to spend $578.37 each year to pay that much tax.
Really? only 600 dollars? I'm pretty sure I spend more than 600 in a year on taxable purchases, the proposed tax would wayyyy overcollect from my calculations (which should be taken with a lot of salt) am i missing something? or do they just wanna trick people into paying more taxes than they need to because they know people won't do the math?

I believe I’ve heard of some E85 being sold in Bristol TN/VA, but I was hoping to be able to find some more towards JC. I read a few articles from ~2020 claiming a few stations were receiving grants to help cover the costs of implementing it in exchange for selling it for at least four years, but I didn’t see anything today when I drove by one of the gas stations that was mentioned in that article. Any info would be appreciated.

Background info: My family is from Taiwan but I was born and raised in California. The majority of my extended family still lives in Taiwan. I am fluent in Mandarin and can understand Taiwanese hokkien but am completely illiterate(altho I can use pinyin). My wife and I are early 30s/late 20s, and have a toddler. We recently visited and loved it so much we are now considering moving here in a couple years and potentially living here for 2-3 years when our kid will be elementary school age with the goal of achieving a native speaking level of mandarin and connecting with my roots. We both have our bachelors degrees and I have 7 years of experience in public accounting and finance but truthfully I would prefer not to work in that industry anymore, meanwhile my wife was previously a teacher but has been a SAHM since COVID. Also we have cats and a senior dog.
We would probably live in Taipei since that is where the majority of my family is and we just enjoy the city and cost of living is significantly lower than where we currently live. My principal concerns are:
  1. Where we would send our kid to school? I feel like we would have to enroll our kiddo in an international school as integrating into a regular public school would probably be too difficult but one year of tuition for the Taipei American School is like $45k which more than I paid for my entire bachelors degree lol and I am against sending my kid to a religious school which it seems like the rest of the international schools are.
  2. What my wife would do for work since she can't speak mandarin.
  3. which districts in Taipei should we consider, and what is the most used version of Craigslist/Zillow for renting out there?
  4. would our kiddo experience any discrimination for being mixed? When I was younger and would visit, my family would warn us that natives don't like ABC's(or w/e they call us) but I have never personally experienced anything of the sort.
  5. A minor concern, but I heavily prefer smoking marijuana vs drinking alcohol to relax, is it really that inaccessible/risky to smoke there?
  6. Edit: adding, would I need to get a cascooter?
I'm aware I have huge blind spots since all my experiences with Taiwan have been short visits, so I'm looking for some guidance and considerations.
