2023.03.21 18:17 Al-Lexx Beautifully disgusting. Mechanics of negative tourism.

Beautifully disgusting. Mechanics of negative tourism.
It started nicely.
Beautiful Brazilian rainforests, Biosphère, Eiffel Tower, Forestry Management:
https://preview.redd.it/l6m16e1ut2pa1.jpg?width=934&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f2b377223c4b8c562996b3070fc6f693e984fb0c
National park was built:
+44 Tourism
And then things got worse.
Pedro II gave city to Bà Triệu:
-24 Tourism
And then things got worse.
Bà Triệu built a few mines. And a few quarries. And Industrial Zone. And Thành. And Aerodrome:
-38 Tourism
And then things got worse.
Bà Triệu gave city to Kupe. You see, Kupe dislikes industry and pollution. So, he decided to pillage some improvements:
Nature loving Kupe
Final form:
-52 Tourism

So, does negative tourism affects culture victory?

The answer is "No". Also, the answer is "Yes".
  • If the national park is the only source of tourism, then the total tourism is zero:
The Tourism lens doesn't highlights National Park
  • If you have another source of tourism in the same city and the sum of all tourism yields in the city is less than zero, then the total tourism is zero:
https://preview.redd.it/tp5dzco3e4pa1.jpg?width=1563&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=895a59a8f5b14c33b3bf28f5680b469daa61caba
  • If you have another source of tourism in the same city and the sum of all tourism yields in the city is positive, then total tourism is approximately equal to the sum of all tourism yields in the city.
https://preview.redd.it/8zp40zh6e4pa1.jpg?width=2005&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f95744ea1c429feebee69024e006cb5e3a2102d
  • If you have the national park in one city and a source of positive tourism in another, then the total tourism is approximately equal to the tourism from the second city:
https://preview.redd.it/65nlht7ef4pa1.jpg?width=1293&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=84063443d37080dda31087fa7d4fccd5b013c453
In conclusion, if you want to calculate total tourism and you have negative tourism from a national park, then my advice is: don't build national parks with negative appeal/tourism.

2023.03.21 17:22 EbbStunning7720 North Cascades or Crater Lake/Redwoods in August?

Deciding between two trips as in title. Two adults and two kids, 5 and 10. All have been to many national parks and love to hike, but 5 year old is limited on distance and elevation.
3/4 of us have been to Redwoods and it’s one of my favorites. NC and CL are new for all of us.
I don’t know much about NC except that it seems very remote and there are ferries involved for some accommodations. Those hotels all seem to be fairly booked out, so I’d be looking for an Airbnb or the like.
We prefer to stay in cabins or homes, I don’t enjoy tent camping (sleeping on the ground was fun in my younger days but not now).
Trip would be about a week, give or take. Would likely stay in 2-3 locations in either trip.
Any suggestions or recommendations? Which park(s) and why? Would love must dos or lodging recommendations.

2023.03.21 15:49 ironcub14 For those interested in joining the YU supporters groups

Less than a month to go before the home opener, this post is for anybody interested in joining the YU supporter groups!
The YU website has the link below for Northern Corridor (NC) and for Centre of the Universe (COTU), with the Instagram and Twitter links as well. The two groups also have active group chats for those who want to get more involved and want to chat YU, CPL, Canadian soccer, or just sports in general. We're also active in the YU Reddit here and on the YU channel in the CPL Discord.
And really, the easiest thing is to just come say hi, feel free to walk over to the south end anytime, we're always welcoming new people. No memberships or anything, we're just a group of soccer fans here.
We don't have a pre or postgame pub at the moment due to the campus pubs not being open much during the weekend or summer, but the club is well aware of that and trying to get one of the pubs to partner up. Until then, we pre and postgame at the Pioneer Village TTC station parking lots, the ones north of Steeles. Come say hi anytime, cheers.

2023.03.21 14:58 SligPants Oldie but a goodie: Nancy Drew mystery game series

Maybe some of you, like me, played Nancy Drew mystery games growing up in the early 00's. But if you haven't, they're super cozy games that I love revisiting even in 2023.
The games are set in modern day (except one). They are mostly centered around a central mystery to solve, and are often loosely based off of one of the books, but also include puzzles and learning about different cultures and history. You investigate by talking to characters, snooping in their stuff, and solving puzzles.
They were generally made for the 10-15 bracket but honestly hold up for me as an adult, especially on harder difficulty. None of them are too in your face about the learning except for, in my opinion, Secret of the Scarlet Hand.
The graphics do date them, especially the first couple games. But after that, since they're pre-rendered, they still look good today. A great bulk of the games were made by the same small team and extremely consistent in terms of quality and what to expect.
The games have a big focus on atmosphere and setting, which makes them very cozy. Some of them are scary, but for the most part they are not. They've very chill, you can mostly do stuff on your own time, except for a few parts that might be timed or tense.
https://store.steampowered.com/developeHeRInteractive/#browse
HeR Interactive has most of their library up on Steam. They also sell games through their website and very frequently have 50% off or higher sales there.
Here's a quick summary of each location, bolded ones being my personal favorites:
  1. Secrets Can Kill (PC 1998): Highschool setting with hand-drawn characters
  2. Stay Tuned for Danger (PC 1999): NYC, tv/film studio, first game with fully 3D characters
  3. Message in a Haunted Mansion (PC 2000): Victorian mansion in San Francisco
  4. Treasure in the Royal Tower (PC 2001): Wisconsin ski resort with French historical influence
  5. The Final Scene (PC 2001): Old theater on the verge of being torn down
  6. Secret of the Scarlet Hand (PC 2002): History Museum, main focus is Mayan history
7. Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake (PC 2002): Wooded lake cabin in Pennsylvania, focus on prohibition history
  1. The Haunted Carousel (PC 2003): Theme park
9. Danger on Deception Island (PC 2003): Pacific northwest island, nautical and whale-based
10. The Secret of Shadow Ranch (PC 2004): Arizona ranch, western and Native American history
11. Curse of Blackmoor Manor (PC 2004): English manor, medieval science among other topics
  1. Secret of the Old Clock (PC 2005): Set in 1930 Illinois
13. Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon (PC 2005): On a 100-year old train in Nevada
  1. Danger By Design (PC 2006): Paris fashion house
  2. The Creature of Kapu Cave (PC 2006): Hawaiian vacation/entomology
  3. White Wolf of Icicle Creek (PC 2007/Nintendo Wii 2008): Canadian ski lodge
17. Legend of the Crystal Skull (PC 2007): Creepy Louisiana estate
  1. The Phantom of Venice (PC 2008): Venice, France
  2. The Haunting of Castle Malloy (PC 2008): Irish castle/countryside
  3. Ransom of the Seven Ships (PC 2009): We don't talk about this one Was pulled from the stores due to how a character may or may not have dressed up to change their race, still playable by disc

2023.03.21 14:20 OsakaWilson The next hike with “ThisIsOsaka!” will be Sunday April 2nd. Peak Cherry Blossom time!

The location was chosen based not on the best spot to sit under the trees, but what would be the best location to hike through cherry trees. Japanese cherry trees, if well tended, can be expected to live around 100 years. The trees in this location are mostly around 90 years old. That means they are huge and gnarly and generally impressive. In another decade this location will have a bunch of young trees, but we get the chance to experience these pre-war trees before they are gone. They also come with a bit of local lore, but that’s for later.
We’re keeping with the policy of keeping within an hour by train from central Osaka. This location is in where three rivers meet to create the Yodo River that runs through Osaka before it goes into the sea. The cherry trees line both sides of a path that follows the strip of land between the Kizu and Uji rivers.
Before hiking through the cherry trees and having lunch, we’ll climb to the Otokoyama Observation Deck. From there we will have an amazing view of the entire region that includes the conjunction of the rivers to form the Yodo river, Kyoto, the Uji plain, and some other interesting historical parts of the geography. Depending on how the surrounding foliage is trimmed, we may be able to see the cherry trees that we will soon be hiking through. They claim it is the best view of Kyoto and I can’t argue with that.
Then, after getting the overview of the land, we’ll go back down and head off to hike through the cherry trees.
I talked to locals and the manager of the location to get an idea of how many people are going to be there. You can expect this location to be quite crowded. There will be a one-way procession of people moving through the trees that loops around to a return route that will give another perspective of the trees. People will have staked out all of the prime real estate on the banks beside the trees, but I’m told that in the field at the end of the promenade there will be plenty of space to put down tarps and have lunch. (I’ve seen both native dandelions and invasive dandelions in the field. Who knows the difference?)
And speaking of lunch, the station has one convenience store and as far as I could tell, pretty much nothing else. This will be another case of putting a lunch together before you get on the train. Considering the number of people who will should be there, do not expect to be able to get food at the convenience store.
I believe there will be a nominal fee to help them maintain the trees and such. I think it was around 100 yen or so.
The total length of the hike will be 6.5 kilometers with an elevation gain of 150 meters, so this is getting a ★☆☆☆☆ difficulty rating. However, although the elevation gain is rather small, it all takes place within 300 meters with lots of steps. That will be within the first 40 minutes and after that it will be almost flat. The entire route is immaculately maintained and can be done with sneakers without issues, assuming it’s not wet.
For prams, and people for whom stairs are not their thing, there appear to be two options but both of them will separate you from the group in the first half. There is a cable car that can be taken to the observation deck and back down. I don’t know how severe the crowding will be. Alternately, there is an observation tower that has a very good view that has an elevator. There is a fee to do that. I don’t recall the cost, but I didn’t feel is was out of line. Either way, we could meet up again before taking in the cherry trees and having lunch.
Meeting Time
Let’s gather at the station between 10:30 and 11:00 and leave at 11:00. We’ll be checking /thisisosaka, so if you get delayed, contact us there and we’ll try to connect up.
Here’s a map I made of the route. It is in reverse. I made it before I decided that doing the observation deck first was a better idea.
Transportation
I suggest arriving by train at the Iwashimizu-Hachimangu Station on the Keihan line. It’s a under an hour ride from Osaka Station and one way costs between 540 and 560 yen depending on the route. A transfer or two is also required depending on the route. Again, since my crew is not back to school, I won’t be giving any more transportation details and we’ll meet you at the station. Once again, the station has only one exit and we’ll gather outside that exit.
It should be crowded, but I think we’ll find each other. At the station, will be flashing the ThisIsOsaka! sign that does not look like edamame. At all.
What to Bring
I will be camping right up until a few days before the hike with spotty Internet access, so I’ll do my best to answer questions, but will be generally incommunicado til just before April.
As always, it's nice to hear if you plan on joining. (And lets others know that they won't be the only ones.) But it that's how your roll, feel free to just show up and surprise us. :) Recently, around 20 people make it to each hike.

This temple is located at the base of the Ko’olau Mountains, particularly in the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park. It is an indoor and outdoor tourist attraction that provides visitors with a unique cultural experience.
The temple is a replica of a 900-year-old Buddhist temple in Uji, Japan. It features traditional Japanese architecture, including a large meditation hall and a beautiful garden filled with koi ponds, waterfalls, and tropical plants. Inside the temple, visitors can admire intricate wood carvings and stunning works of art that they will not find anywhere else.

The Ala Moana Center is considered to be the largest open-air shopping center in the world and the best thing about it is that it offers a wide variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment options for its visitors. Inside this mall, visitors can find high-end fashion brands, local boutiques, and international stores. Located in Kaneohe, the Windward Mall is a smaller shopping center when compared to the other ones that we listed. But despite its size, this mall offers a more relaxed and low-key shopping experience. Many of them offer dining options ranging from food courts to restaurants, as well as entertainment such as movie theaters, playgrounds, and live performances. Some malls even offer unique experiences like miniature golf or outdoor stages for live events. Additionally, each mall has its unique atmosphere and selection of stores, making it worth exploring even if you’re not a big shopper.
Relax In A Spa
Visiting a spa on a rainy day in Hawaii can offer several benefits beyond just relaxation.
Numerous spas in Hawaii, no matter which island you’re on, are known for using natural and local ingredients, such as honey, coconut oil, and sea salt, in their treatments to nourish and rejuvenate the skin. These ingredients are often sourced from local farmers and producers, which means those that are availing of these services are also supporting the island’s economy and are promoting sustainability.
In addition to using natural ingredients, many Hawaiian spas incorporate traditional healing practices into their treatments.
For example, the Lomi Lomi massage is a traditional Hawaiian massage technique that uses long, flowing strokes to release tension and promote relaxation. This massage is believed to not only relax the body but also to balance the mind and spirit.
Also, rainy days in Hawaii can be an opportunity to experience hydrotherapy, which involves the use of water for therapeutic purposes. Many Hawaiian spas offer hydrotherapy treatments, such as hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms. These treatments can help to improve circulation, reduce muscle tension, and detoxify the body.
Check out the Waikiki Aquarium
Checking out the Waikiki Aquarium on a rainy day can be a great way to stay dry while still experiencing the unique marine life found in the waters surrounding Hawaii.
The Waikiki Aquarium is home to more than 3,500 species of marine life, including colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, and coral reefs. The aquarium also features exhibits on Hawaii’s marine ecosystems and the conservation efforts that are being made to protect them.
Also, the rainy weather can help out in creating a more tranquil and relaxed atmosphere, which can enhance the entire experience of exploring the aquarium.
Visitors can take their time and stroll through the exhibits, admiring the beauty and diversity of Hawaii’s marine life. The aquarium also offers educational programs and activities, such as guided tours and interactive exhibits, which can provide a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems and the importance of conservation efforts.

Hike to Manoa Falls
Hiking to Manoa Falls on a rainy day can be a unique and exciting experience for visitors to Oahu. However, it is essential to take certain precautions before setting out on the trail.
Due to the rainfall, the trail can become muddy and slippery, making it challenging to navigate. It is advisable to wear appropriate hiking shoes with good traction to avoid slipping or falling. Additionally, it is essential to dress appropriately for the weather, including rain gear, to stay dry and comfortable during the hike.
On the other hand, a rainy day can provide stunning views of the lush greenery and waterfall. The increased flow of water can make the waterfall appear more dramatic, creating an unforgettable experience for hikers.
It is important to note that during heavy rainfall, the trail may become hazardous, and it is advisable to check with the park authorities before starting the hike.

Visit the Lolani Palace
The Lolani Palace is a significant historical landmark and was the official residence of the Hawaiian monarchs during the late 1800s, and on a rainy day, visitors can take their time exploring the palace without worrying about the weather. The palace is indoors and air-conditioned, providing a comfortable environment to escape the rain and humidity outside.
Visitors can take a guided tour of the palace and learn about the history of Hawaii and its monarchy. The tour includes a visit to the Palace’s many rooms, including the throne room, dining room, and private chambers, which are adorned with beautiful artifacts and decorations that tell the story of Hawaii’s royal past.
In addition to the guided tours, the palace also offers several educational programs, including cultural demonstrations, lectures, and musical performances, which provide a deeper understanding of Hawaii’s history and culture.

Conclusion
A rainy day in Oahu doesn’t have to put a damper on your vacation plans.
There are plenty of indoor activities and outdoor adventures that can be enjoyed, rain or shine. Whether you want to explore the island’s culture and history, relax at a spa, or get up close and personal with animals, there is something for everyone.
Some tips to keep in mind when planning your rainy day activities in Oahu include bringing appropriate rain gear, such as umbrellas and rain jackets, wearing comfortable and slip-resistant shoes for any outdoor adventures, and checking the weather forecast for updates on any potential storms. It’s also a good idea to call ahead or check online for any changes in hours or closures due to inclement weather.
So don’t let a little rain ruin your Hawaiian vacation. Embrace the opportunity to try something new and experience the island differently. With these options and tips, you can still make the most of your time in Oahu, rain or shine.

Following on from SecretApes post the other week updating you all with the poll results and us welcoming Spaceboy to the mod team, we're going to expand a bit on some of the more popular comments/requests, namely the sidebar in the old Reddit, weekly discussion threads, and keeping the sub active in period were we don't have games.
So we're going to kill as many birds with one stone as possible by starting a series of posts with the long term aim of cleaning up the sub/sidebar a bit by having a home for the most commonly asked questions/a place for new supporters to find out information, which also gives us conversation topics for the quieter weeks - Aren't we clever?
On quieter weeks within the sub (such as the international breaks) we will post and sticky a discussion thread on a particular topic, which you can contribute towards if you wish, which we will then collate in one place with a fancy link.
The current ideas for threads are:
If you have any other suggestions, please feel free to let us know here, but to kick things off....
Why did you chose Villa?

2023.03.21 12:59 borkthegee Zone 7b/8 getting ready for my second season of growing vegetables in containers on my concrete patio!!

Hi friends! Last year was my first year having access to enough space and sun to grow something for real and I tried my best, learned a lot and had some great results! A glance at it earlier in the season and then again a bit later
I did a mix of flowers but also herbs and some vegetables. I did two types of tomatoes (det. cherry, ind. grape), many peppers (shishito, mad hatter, and orange??), and herbs like rosemary, emerald towers basil, thyme, mint, etc.
My advice (to myself) going into my second year:
Here's a few shots of various plants last year in grow bags to give you an idea:
This year:
I'm dialing it back a little bit (I want to use the patio for a bench and grill as well) but also doubling down on the things I enjoyed. Some of the seeds I started:
Good luck to everyone this season! To all the newbies, from this Year #2'er, it's worth it!!

2023.03.21 12:37 0x_coderunknown [STORY] An adventure too far

A bit of context. After beating Eikthyr, I decided its time for world travel. Traveled to a couple of nearby swamps, collected a few iron scrap (from muddy scrap piles as I don't plan to beat the Elder anytime soon), turned them into iron nails and build myself a longship and out I went.
Been to plains, raided a fuling village, made lox fight by my side (and against me), been to the hellscape called Can'tSeeAnything. All well and good.

Present Day:
Went to check a battle between a Seeker & Dvergr group. Even took part in the battle firing a few arrows. Pretty sure it did negligible damage. Once the enemy was dead, parked the boat nearby and went to check the tower (most likely a lighthouse). It housed 5-6 dwarves. All non-starred. A familiar siren echo'd announcing the arrival of a gjall. No big deal, dwarves should be able to take it down.

Enemy Raid:
Well the gjall wasn't alone. It had a sidekick. A seeker soldier. And if that wasn't enough, the gjall was 1*. Soldier murdered the entire group while the gjall was doing CAS runs on the tower. Finished off the injured soldier with arrows and the gjall out of targets (and low on fuel) returned to its base.
Collected the seeker meat and now its time to leave for home on my longship... ship.... where is my ship. Why are there crates floating in the water? I even went swimming to an adjacent mistland island to check if I parked my ship there. It wasn't. My ship was gone.

Odin, We have a problem:
So how do I go back? I had 2 options:
  1. Beat Elder, grab the key and open a crypt I found in a swamp near the Elder alter (3/4th distance to mistlands), mine iron scrap. Ship the scrap to my base. Turn it into iron, then into iron nails, portal back, build a longship & escape. Sound more like a Prey Mooncrash mission. Cool.
  2. Or build a karve at mistland, sail back at snail speed (compared to longship), risk encounters with serpent or worse capsizing during storm. Stop at regular intervals to repair boat. Talk about boring escort missions in videogames.

Plan #B. B stands for Boat:
I was almost about to do #1 when I realized the only reason I have to sail back is to bring back all the resources I found which can't be teleport-ed including 2 dvergr extractor, a huge pile of black metal, copper fragments and 11 pieces of iron scrap. Scrap that can be smelted into iron bars that then can be converted into iron nails. But the conversion of bar to nails require the forge which require copper. Luckily the tower thing was already half destroyed by the soldier and it yielded copper.
Went to base, grabbed the remaining items and setup a smelter and a forge inside the still collapsing base. 1 night later, I had 11 iron ingots. Turned 10 into 100 iron nails, built a longship, sent the remaining items through portal to base, cleanup the structure and went home. By home, I mean in search of next trouble.
More adventure to follow soon.
