Today I visited a little town in Yorkshire called Wortley.
We were driving through and decided to look at the graveyard and church, then decided to look at the hall there, expecting it to be the usual aristo/private event bs.
Turns out the place was taken over by a union back in the 50s after the former owner had let it go derelict, the local workers took over the manor and renovated it, doing up the gardens etc turning it into an educational centre and worker run cooperative - attempting to make a "home of the labour movement".
I can't describe the pride, hope and inspiration I felt upon learning workers had done that, entry to the garden was free, parking was free, the food and services are comparatively affordable, lovely gardens etc - all because profits arent stolen by parasitic lords and are instead reinvested in improving the place.
The walled garden there is also open to community projects, open to the public and they grow food for the restaurant. Visiting that place is the first time things have felt green a pleasant in a long time for me. It's a nice day but it's also a monument to what can be done when people get together, how things could have been or could be.
I'd recommend it to anybody nearby if they fancy a nice day out - also very cheap for stuff like weddings. The graveyard in town is lovely too.
