2023.06.01 04:48 ValentinePatch1999 [TotK] [SPOILERS] Where I believe Tears of the Kingdom falls in the Zelda Timeline, both past and present events
Introduction
If you're a follower of the Zelda timeline, I have a theory that can hopefully explain how Tears of the Kingdom integrates into the greater Zelda timeline. Keep in mind that I haven't beaten Ganondorf yet, but know everything else, even the memories and Light Dragon.
Since around 2011/2012, there have been officially three Zelda timelines that happen after Ocarina of Time. Before that though, Skyward Sword and Minish Cap preceded OoT. Now, let me give a brief rundown of the already established timeline. You can skip the following paragraph if you already know it.
Timeline Rundown before BotW
After OoT, the timeline split into three branches, two of which resulted from Link defeating Ganon at the end and one where he died trying. The two timelines were called the Child Link and Adult Link timelines because, like Avengers Endgame, the timeline where Ganon was defeated by Adult Link didn't just disappear. The timeline continued existing with Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks. Adult Link returned into his child form and lived out the remainder of his childhood life beginning with Majora's Mask. Twilight Princess and Four Swords Adventures took place after that. Finally, we have the timeline where Link died fighting Ganon, and the games that took place after this were a Link to the Past, the Oracle games, Link's Awakening, Link Between Worlds, Triforce Heroes, and the original two Zeldas.
Placement of BotW and TotK
Now, we come to Breath of the Wild. It's been widely debated whether it follows a specific timeline branch or is a result of the three timelines being unified. If the three timelines were "unified" then how would that even happen, let alone offscreen? There has to be some sort of big event that explains why the timelines reunited. We know that BotW is confirmed to be after OoT. Ultimately, for the sake of those arguments, I'll put down BotW in the Child Link timeline after Four Swords Adventures because of a comment Zelda says in one of the memories mentioning a hero in the "glowing embers of twilight" or something like that, as well as the Ritos being their own different species existing at the same time as the Zoras as opposed to an evolved form of Zoras that have gone extinct, as shown in Wind Waker, so that eliminates the adult timeline placement.
With Tears of the Kingdom, this whole game kind of threw me for a loop with the timeline placement, starting with what is shown as Hyrule's apparent beginning in the past TotK events. The events of Skyward Sword still have to take place, due to Demise's curse, but the TotK past events have to take place before OoT because Rauru was the very first king of Hyrule, despite the Zonai having no mention in Skyward Sword, Minish Cap, or Ocarina of Time. I would like to provide some evidence that can have both past and present events of TotK fit in with the greater timeline.
Ganondorf's Curse
The Ganondorf that we see in TotK has to be the very first Ganondorf even before OoT. You may be thinking, "How can two Ganondorfs exist at the same time?" Well, maybe Demise's curse found a way to duplicate itself from the Ganondorf sealed by King Rauru and found itself inside a new Ganondorf, the Ganondorf that we see in OoT (and, following that, WW, TP, aLttP, etc.). Seemingly less powerful than TotK Ganondorf, but still a formidable threat nonetheless. More recently, we have already seen Demise's curse duplicate once more when Ganondorf was still sealed by Rauru, but the entity known as Calamity Ganon still existed and wreaked havoc above ground. Also, given that a male Gerudo is born once every 100 years, there can be an explanation that the Zonai-sealed Ganondorf is, by all means, temporarily dead, thus allowing another male Gerudo to (somehow) be born, one of them being OoT Ganondorf.
Zonai History
The sky islands are another major player in determining the placement as well. As said before, we see no mention of the Zonai in Skyward Sword, so maybe the Zonai had an additional Skyloft-like civilization that came down after the Hylians settled down on the surface some time after the events of Skyward Sword, assumedly long after SS Link and Zelda are dead. Maybe the Zonai were also chosen by the Goddess Hylia, or a god of their own, to force other pieces of Zonai land, the sky islands, above the clouds just like Skyloft, but maybe in another part of the planet. Long after SS, the Zonai found a way to move their sky islands above the newly-named Hyrule and send them down to the surface with their prime objective to live among the newly found Hylians and coexist with many of them who mistook them for gods. Even though there are no other Zonai we see other than Rauru and Mineru, that doesn't mean that something didn't happen to the Zonai that caused their extinction. The most likely event is that the Hylians were growing more overall racist toward the Zonai and, after a Hylian-Zonai war, were forced them back to their sky islands and flee back upward, causing the Zonai to slowly die out without enough land to cultivate their crops. It's either that or the Zonai agreeing to leave Hyrule on their own after Rauru's death due to not trusting Hylians with their tech, or their population simply dying out on their own. In any case, something must have happened to the rest of the Zonai after Rauru and Mineru's "deaths" that caused them to not only go extinct, but also keep the history and technology of the Zonai under wraps, leading to no mention of the Zonai during Ocarina of Time or any game afterward with the exception of BotW.
The name "Rauru"
Some minor additional evidence is that the the Light Sage Rauru that we see in OoT has to be named after the first King Rauru as well, so that can't just be a coincidence. This also shows that some Hylians still secretly hold the Zonai in high esteem.
TotK Present
Now we go to the present events of TotK. King Rauru's seal is slowly being broken and Ganondorf becomes fully revived, coincidentally when BotW Link and Zelda stumble upon him below Hyrule Castle. Given that we see no other male Gerudos in either BotW or TotK, we can see that this Ganondorf is the new "reborn" male Gerudo who has been slowly regaining consciousness possibly as far back as several years, decades, or even centuries, before the past events of BotW. I believe that a piece of dark energy broke off from Ganondorf's sealed corpse and slowly manifested itself into Calamity Ganon, slowly building its strength until it attempted to destroy everything three separate times. This goes back to Demise's curse duplicating itself. Maybe OoT Ganondorf was born a normal male Gerudo, and a past piece of dark energy from Zonai-Sealed Ganondorf's corpse found its way to him in his early life. If that's true, then it's poetic that we come full circle in TotK with defeating the very first Ganondorf, the one that predated all others, with the latest incarnations of Link and Zelda because I know Zelda's dragon form has to play a key role in the final fight.
Apologies if that took a few long paragraphs to say, but I want to get that theory of mine across before I defeat Ganondorf below Hyrule Castle in a few hours. Hopefully this explains a lot.

2023.06.01 04:09 Lost_hylian Timeline theories
I keep seeing tons of timeline theories pop up on my YT feed and all of them say totk retconned or changed the timeline somehow but I think the timeline placements are obvious (also what’s with the weird one where the memories from totk are of the first calamity 10,000 yrs ago 🤷)
My “theory”/hypothesis
The memories in totk take place in the time line before minish cap but after skyward sword, and the present day of totk takes place at the end of the timelines at a convergence point.
The Timeline to me looks like this:
Era of Hylia, Skyward Sword, Totk Memories, Minish Cap, Four Swords, OOT, then the timeline splits
Downfall: A link to the past, oracle of ages and seasons, links awakening, a link between worlds, Triforce Heroes, the legends of Zelda, and Zelda II
Child timeline: Majoras Mask, Twilight Princess, Four Swords Adventures
Adult Timeline: The Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks
Then the timelines converge with the great calamity of 10,000 yrs ago happening in all three at once causing them to merge, 10,000 years pass and Botw and Totk happen,
Let me know what you guys think, this is just how everything feels like it fits to me. 🤷

2023.06.01 02:58 mr_darker [ALL] Discussion on the style & target audience of new & old games?
I grew up playing Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, 4 Swords Adventures, and other little handheld zelda games like the minish cap & a link to the past. I remember the game being scary and cool. Windwaker came out & the new cartoon look & feel was an adjustment, but it was great in its own way. Twilight princess I had reservations about being too "futuristic" with the technology vibe, but it turned out to be a very solid one like OoT & MM.
Now, I've beaten Breath of the Wild (adulthood), and while it's got some changes that are both positive & negative, there's just some things that irk me about it. To name a few, the Kokoroks are constantly all "yahaha!" and that big maracca one doing the dance n sounds it just plain makes me uncomfortable to watch, like Tingle but way worse. You're just like "why did they put these in here?".
Then there's the Yagi clan leader. Old games had you fighting things like DeadHands & Floormasters before bosses like BongoBongo. This dudes shaped like a pear, goofier than tingle, & to top it off he's pathetic as a boss. It's not my thing, I get that is probably IS someone else's.
This was scary These scared me a lot too People say this was a scary boss https://preview.redd.it/onhm7ms5za3b1.png?width=866&format=png&auto=webp&s=2a166aee1466c3dc67db1120b4a1831e07bf9aab https://preview.redd.it/405d61t3ya3b1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=861595f20761074e96f19d6353c232ffa3edee46 I'm wondering who that target audience is, or why they decide to change directions away from the classics despite Twilight Princess being a huge success while sticking to it. BOTW & TOTK seem like major releases rather than spinoffs, so I doubt they're gonna go back to the old style in new releases. What are the developers thinking? Why are new games coming out the way they are?

2023.06.01 01:30 SpiritPug [ALL] Any opinions on what Zelda game I should try out after TOTK?
I admittedly haven’t REALLY played any other Zelda games other than BOTW and TOTK.
OOT was my first intro to the series. I LOVED it, and it’s one of my most memorable experiences with gaming when I was a child. However, I never actually played all that much. I never got past the Deku Tree in my own game, and only watched up until Link turned into an adult when I watched my cousin’s play. The Redeads gave me horrible nightmares and I figured it was too dark for me. Bosses in general were not my thing (I couldn’t even get far in DK64.) I didn’t own any other Nintendo system except for the Wii, which I didn’t play many games on, and definitely didn’t even think about getting Twilight Princess.
I got BOTW last October thinking I wouldn’t get very far, but ended up beating it. I don’t know if I’ll beat TOTK for a while (I spoiled the final battle for myself. I suck at combat so it looks like I’m gonna get my butt whooped) so I wanted to try out a few of the other titles so I can round out my Zelda experience and not be such a noob poser when it comes to this series 😂
Any advice on where to start? I was playing Majora’s Mask on my switch while waiting for TOTK to come out (I bought that HELLA expense subscription last year and it renewed 🙄) but I didn’t get very far. I also tried to play OOT but the controls are SO hard to get used to. I figured my easiest options are Skyward Sword and the remastered Link’s Awakening…but if enough people say OOT I might dust off my N64 and play it then.
I (unfortunately) donated my Wii a few years ago. But I do have a friend who said I could borrow it to play TP (his favorite)
TL;DR: (because man can I ramble!) Looking for advice on the next Zelda game I should try out. I have only played TOTK and BOTW.

2023.06.01 00:23 Lilassmofo69420 [MM] Need help regarding modding Majora’s mask (can’t download Patchertool64+)
I don’t have a very great understanding of modding and rom hacking so I need some help in modding Majora’a mask. I’ve downloaded it on Cemu the virtual console one. One of the videos on the internet recommends me to download Patcher64+ tool which I’m not able to install. Whenever I run the .exe file the computer shows the screen where you can press run anyway, but it doesn’t work, I can’t seem to download Patcher64+ tool.
It would really mean alot if anyone could help me step by step to patch and add redux mod to Majoras mask.

2023.06.01 00:21 Rukahs- [BoTW] Is BoTW hard to play? (I am a neophyte)
Hello everyone, I’m new to this subreddit. I played a few chapters of Zelda in my life (Majora’s Mask, Ocarina of Time...), just today I bought a Nintendo Switch OLED and I’m intrigued by The Legend of Zelda Breath of The Wild, that was precisely why I bought the Switch, to then play ToTK later. My question is: Is BoTW a hard game to play ? I’ve never played with Switch, I’m from the PlayStation world. Thank you all!

2023.05.31 22:48 Brilliant-Candle-406 [BotW] After you played TotK, will you ever play BotW again?
Well, I think that BotW is too much of a downgrade, if one played TotK, to ever go back and enjoy it. I think I can play all of the old Zeldas again, especially Majoras Mask, Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker, but I don't see myself playing BotW again.
Who feels the same?

2023.05.31 18:41 Agnol117 [Progress] May Down, 13/24 Done!
999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors: Holy hell this was great. After getting the first ending, I was consumed by this. I spent all of my free time for the next four days getting the other five endings, and I absolutely loved it. It was a fantastic trip, and I am very eager to play the rest of the franchise.
Forgive Me Father: This sounded like it was right up my alley. A Doom inspired shooter with comic style graphics and a Lovecraftian horror story? All things I love. But I just felt like it never really came together. I’ll grant that it is very pretty, but I just never really felt like it was fun to play.
Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku: Full disclosure: I went into this knowing I wasn’t going to finish, and that I would likely only play like ten or so minutes of it. It’s not a good game. It’s grindy as hell. The power scaling makes no sense (in the second area, you have to fight wolves. The way power levels work in Dragon Ball, wolves should not be able to harm Goku, let alone take multiple punches to defeat). But I’d played it as a kid, and I wanted to at least attempt to revisit it before I got to Kakarot. It’s still a bad game, and it no longer has the novelty of being the only easily available DBZ game that goes through major story beats and is more than just a fighting game. Not sad to be leaving this one behind.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night: I didn’t expect to bounce off of this one like I did, but here we are. It just feels so slow and clunky, compared both to other Metroidvanias I’ve played (mostly Metroid Fusion and Hollow Knight) and my limited experience with later Castlevania games. I gave it a good shot, and I might attempt it again in the future (I can see from my limited play time why people love it), but it’s just not clicking with me right now.
Lovebirb: This should have been right up my alley. It’s a weird visual novel/rhythm game about birds dating. Exactly my kind of weird. But, I couldn’t get the controls to function enough to actually play it. Kind of a bummer, because it looks like it’s funny as hell.
Howl: A short visual novel on itch dealing with werewolves and menstruation. It’s very short, and very funny.
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga: My first SMT game, and I’ve become a convert. It’s a fantastic game, and Press Turn is officially my favorite turn based combat system. I’m excited to play DDS2, and then to branch out into other SMT and Persona games. Highly recommend this.
OneShot: God, what an experience. In the same general vein of Undertale, this is a cute indie game that’ll emotionally wreck you. Highly recommend.
YIIK: A Postmodern RPG: A discord server I’m in rags on this game a lot, and I figured I owed it to myself to at least give it a shot. I don’t regret doing so, but it’s definitely not a game I’m going to stick with. The battle system annoys me enough that I cannot see myself sticking with it for the twenty-odd hours that the game is predicted to last, and frankly, the main character is insufferable, even in the hour or so of the game I played.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor: This improves on the first game in basically every way. Combat's better, there's more Force powers, and they're more fun to play around with. Even better, you start with all of your abilities from the last game, with no bullshit of having to regain them (which is a definite plus, because I love any game that lets me doublejump from the start). The biggest thing I can say against it is that the story feels kind of like it drags on. The last act is emotionally satisfying, but it still feels like a few hours should be cut from the middle somewhere.
Guardians of the Galaxy: This just didn’t click with me. The story did nothing for me, and the combat just felt very shallow. I moved on from it pretty quickly.
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition: Okay so technically I only finished Act II, and I know there’s an extensive third act/post game that I will probably play, but the credits rolled, so I’m counting it. This is a fantastic game. It strikes a great balance between classic Dragon Quest and feeling modern, and it was a blast to play. The biggest issue is probably the music being
incredibly samey, but honestly even that wasn’t enough to put me off.
Zero Wing: Just realized this was on NSO, and had to give it a shot. Aside from the memetically bad translation, it’s actually pretty fun. I only did one loop, though I think it loops endlessly, and it was enjoyable.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot So this is like, ⅕ good game, ⅘ painfully generic game. The combat is fun, and…that’s about it. Every other part is generic to the point of tedium. Dropped this midway through the Saiyan Saga.
it gets so lonely here: Free horror visual novel on Steam. Loved it, played it through to completion and got all the achievements. Fantastic experience.
So, that’s May. I’m at thirteen of my twenty-four, so I’ve met my goal of twelve. I’m still likely to play some/most of the rest of these, so we’ll see how that goes.

Hey everyone. I just purchased a switch and the new Zelda game, being delivered tomorrow. The last games I played I this series were Ocarina Of Time and Majora's Mask. I saw a brief trailer and this looks like, obviously, an ebtire different type of game now. Haha. Just wondering if anyone has any tips? Will it still needs similar enough for me to understand the game? I'm assuming so. Thanks all!
