It was a long night. We wrapped up around 1:10 am.
Look who found the share button on the School Board website. The only new info is going to be the voting records on the motions overturning the appeals, but the appeals and motions are available here, http://go.boarddocs.com/fl/escambia/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=CMYQBZ67EF22.
There were a lot of speakers. Some were on topic. Some were not. Some spoke about the law. Some referenced school board policy. Some appealed to a sense of decency. Some railed against indoctrination, woke, and "other acronyms."
In the end, I think people being there and speaking against the bans helped the board decide to keep the challenged books. I only say that because we went from all four challenged books being banned last meeting, 2/21, to all four books being kept this meeting. Even if they were kept at fewer grade levels than I had hoped for.
Drama - approved for middle and high schools
New Kid - approved for middle and high school.

New Kid being pulled from elementary schools stung the most. This book is perfectly suited for those students. I thank School Board Member Patty Hightower for trying to make that happen. I'm disappointed that School Board Member David Williams moved to amend the motion by removing the book from elementary schools. And School Board Member Paul Fetsko for seconding that motion. 

The Bluest Eye - approved for 11th and 12th grade

I'm glad The Bluest Eye was kept at all. But I'm not happy that David Williams only voted to approve it for even those two grades because he was afraid of how his former students would be impacted with its removal, without the same regard for other students, especially with his amendment to New Kid. 

The Nowhere Girls - approved for 11th and 12th grade

Because of the relevance to consent, standing up the bullying, and discussion of sexual assault, this would have been good to keep in grades 9-12.

The comments on my last post were great to catch up on when I could. I appreciate that most people kept it civil. And the support was much needed.
I'll be sure to post information concerning the next meeting with more notice. The novel Push will be up for appeal. Looking for Alaska, Black Brother, Black Brother, and Ground Zero could be if the appeals are/were submitted in time.
Thanks for your support and hope to see more people opposed to book bans next meeting. Maybe we can show the School Board that it's a vocal minority seeking these bans.

Commentary: Life’s Narrative Pays Homage to Thoreau

As I enter my 70s, I realize that in some deeply immersive sense I was captured by Henry David Thoreau.
When I read “Walden” for the first time as a high school student, I understood that Thoreau’s idealizing of isolation in nature was the perfect solution to my incredibly rudimentary social skills, particularly with girls. If I lived in a cabin by myself, I wouldn’t have to socialize much at all.
Fortunately, in college, I developed skills in dealing with women and that led me to a number of rewarding relationships, though spending time in the natural world remained a pervasive and passionate escape.
Thoreau writes in his chapter titled “Solitude”: “I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was as companionable as solitude.”
For the next 20 years I spent as much time as possible in the outdoors, exploring especially the National Parks in the United States and Canada. However, my dream of an isolated cabin never left.
When I finished my doctoral work at 35 and took an assistant professor’s position at Radford University, I now felt financially comfortable to begin my search for land where I could really begin my Thoreauvian quest.
I drove all over Montgomery, Giles, Floyd, Craig and Pulaski, exploring dozens of potential sites, and after years of searching I finally settled on 140 acres in Reese Hollow. I lived in a teepee for parts of an entire year and that convinced me that a cabin would be the perfect next step.
I hired Richard, a carpenter friend, and working as his assistant, in two months my 16-by-20-foot cabin was complete, without running water and with a self-dug outhouse. For most people such a dwelling would have been a nightmare but for me it was living the American Dream.
For the next eight years, I spent most mornings out hiking the Pedlar Hills or fishing the North Fork of the Roanoke River. So many wildflowers came under my inspection, including coltsfoot, spring beauty, bloodroot and wood anemone. Poplars, boxwoods, sugar maples, red and white oaks and many more filled my property. Wood thrushes, scarlet tanagers and white-eyed vireos, among others, sang to me.
Perhaps the most important thing I did was something I think Thoreau would have heartily approved. I put 135 of my 140 acres in a Forever Wild conservation easement. The process was a struggle until a botanist found the federally endangered smooth coneflower on the property.
Toward the end of my stay, I married and my wife and I contracted to have a log home built near the cabin. After a half-dozen years my wife left, but I stayed in the hollow for another seven years, vowing to live there at least till 70. That goal was interrupted by kidney lupus, and at 65 I found myself living in an apartment in Blacksburg. I was still in touch with nature, kayaking the New, hiking the Cascades, following the spring flush of flowers in Wildwood Park, fishing Big Walker, but all traces of my Thoreauvian adventure were gone.
Ben Okri, a Nigerian storyteller, writes: “If we change the stories we live by, quite possibly we change our lives.” I was so lucky to have found my story so early with no need to change anything about it.

I'm going to be completely honest, I am overwhelmed and struggling to get through day to day at this point. My father hasn't been able to work for the past months due a shoulder injury resulting in him being scheduled for a complete shoulder replacement, and my mother works for the county school bus garage in order to pay for health insurance, so she doesn't end up bringing much home after the fact. That leaves me, a 20 year old forklift mechanic, to try and support my family. I bought a house and had them move in with me. I pay for the cars, the mortgage, and most of the bills. My father tries his best to do what he can, but it isn't much and it truly isn't his fault, even though he tries blaming himself. I absolutely don't want to ask for much, but after the windstorms that hit most of Kentucky last Friday, we lost a few very large trees and a good portion of our roof. Currently we have tarps covering most of the roof just to get by but insurance will only pay so much. We have a $2000 deductible and a cash value policy for the roof, meaning that the insurance company depreciates the value of our 15 year old roof and pays the difference. That leaves us with a likely close to $5-6000 bill to repair our home.
Me and my father both are volunteer firefighters on our local department and what ever generosity is out there I guarantee we will do our best to pass it on in any way we can. Thank you all so much

A Person Like Sowinski

Now that a federal Judge handed Colborn a devastating denial of his frivolous lawsuit someone better post something about Sowinski or it might seem like we are losing interest in Zellner's filing! I (genuinely) figured it might be worthwhile to review Sowinski's 2016 and 2020 emails, as I've seen some less than accurate arguments pop up from surely well meaning users. Recall Kathleen Zellner first mentioned Sowinski in an ultimately unsuccessful 2021 remand motion. At the time Zellner was not in possession of the Sowinski Audio from 11/6 demonstrating he called MTSO to relay his observations of two men in possession of Teresa's vehicle.

The state, you may recall, was not swayed. In their first ever reply concerning Sowinski they identified his affidavit as "Unsupported by even a suggestion of corroborating evidence." They argued Avery "cannot rely on the word of a person like Sowinski: someone who appeared out of the blue for the first time 15 years after this case began." Now we know those arguments were faulty. Sowinski tried to pass on the information to police in 2005 immediately after he watched the evening news and realized the importance of what he saw. Nothing happened, and audio of his call was suppressed over and over. Eventually, this suppressed audio (or some of it) was finally released by MTSO, which along with the Devon affidavit provides more than enough "corroborating evidence" desired by the state for Sowinski's affidavit.

The Sowinski Emails (2016 & 2020)

Up first, the 1/7/16 email to the NY Innocence Project - 20 days post release of MAM:

Hello. My name is Thomas Sowinski and I delivered newspapers to the Avery residence every day for years. I delivered papers at the time of the Halbach situation. Somewhere between Oct 31st and Nov 5th 2005, not sure which day, I turned down Avery road to deliver their paper when I almost ran into 2 people pushing a dark colored small SUV down the road with absolutely no lights on. It was a dark and I delivered the papers as soon as possible each day so I could get home in time to get my son ready for school and drop him off.
As I passed them, I realized I stumbled upon something that seemed out of place. I spooked both of them tremendously. I drove down the dead end and put the paper in the tube and turned around to come back down the road. I knew I was in a shady situation so I approached them with a good amount of speed to get around them. As I approached the guy pushing from the driver side stopped and tried to stop me in the middle of the road. I went in the ditch and just waved to calm the men into thinking I was oblivious to what was going on. I didn't see who the man was on the passenger side but the young man, maybe 18 or so that tried to stop he was not Brendan Dassey. His build was thin and fit and about 5'9" tall.
Days later after seeing the footage on TV of the RAV4 being found on the property it clicked that it was probably the SUV I had seen that night. I called police and notified them. They didn't seem interested at all and said thanks for the info. Never asked me to fill out a report or even ask for my name or phone number. At the time I just figured they had enough evidence and were not concerned with my information. After seeing the documentary on Netflix I decided that someone other than the Manitowoc County officials needs to hear this. They were pushing in the direction towards the house from the highway. I feel obligated to share this now that I know some of the circumstances involving the way Manitowoc handled the case.

Nothing came of this email and Sowinski went on with his life. Then almost 5 years later, during the holiday season of 2020, Sowinski watched Making a Murderer season 2 and again became frustrated that no one seemed interested in the information he had about the movement of (what he believed to be) Teresa's vehicle. Now believing he knew the identity of the "young man" Sowinski decided to reach out to Kathleen Zellner, who of course was featured in the second season, and has an email for Steven Avery case tips on her website. Sowinski emailed Zellner on Saturday December 26, 2020:

Just finished 2nd season. I lived there at the time. I was a motor route driver that was on the property everyday to deliver newspapers.
A few days before they found the RAV I was delivering papers at about 1-2 a.m. and saw Bobby Dassey and another older man pushing the RAV down the road towards the junkyard. Not lights at all. I almost hit them. They were very spooked. As you know, it's a dead end street. After delivering the paper I had to go right back past them. Dassey stood in the road next to the RAV trying to stop me from getting by. As I approached my headlights were on them 100%. The other guy hid behind a passenger door that was open from pushing the vehicle. I didn't slow down and drove in the ditch to get by, waving as I said "paperboy, gotta go."
Dassey had no shirt on and the other guy had a very scraggly beard and seemed to be in his 60s. I did call police and they said they would contact me, they never did. After season one, I emailed an attorney of Steven's and got no response. I've decided to reach out one more time as this information seems vital especially after what I just watched. I live in XXXXXX now but I lived in Manitowoc for over 20 years.

And with that Zellner began her investigation. Once the suppressed audio came out (and Sowinski's claims further bolstered by the Devon affidavit) the state quickly went from disputing Sowinski's credibility ("You can't rely on a person like Sowinski with no corroborating evidence who just wants the money") to changing or expanding their argument to include: "Who cares if Sowinski saw Bobby pushing the RAV and called police? Even if true, that doesn't mean Bobby killed her!" The state understands Sowinski couldn't have fabricated that withheld 2005 audio or the 2016 email (both of which occurred before any reward was offered) nor could he have convinced his ex to commit perjury for kicks (further demonstrating his observations predate any reward).

Thus, the record demonstrates (via Audio, Emails & Affidavits) Sowinski called MTSO looking to pass on relevant info about Teresa's vehicle being moved or handled in a suspicious manner by two men prior to its discovery. The Sowinski call occurred 11/6/05, which was one day after both Steven and Bobby were identified as suspects. No report was written and no investigation was done. This mishandling of potentially exculpatory information by MTSO in 2005 is eerily similar to the events surrounding the 1995 call fielded by Andrew Colborn. In both cases MTSO received information about a crime connected to Steven Avery and the information was quickly suppressed, likely because MTSO knew the information, both in 1995 and 2005, could not be used to inculpate Steven Avery, so they buried it, lied about it, and now want people to forget how the Sowinski call demonstrates they were ignoring leads that pointed away from Steven Avery and towards a third party ... or parties.

Order the hearing. Justice demands it. We need to know if history repeated itself - if the persistent yet redundant misconduct of the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Department (failing to document or provide audio of calls containing potentially exculpatory info for Steven Avery) once more resulted in Steven Avery having his liberty and autonomy wrongfully stripped from him in the name of Justice for Teresa Halbach.

We love our current home but need to move eventually and a relative suggested a home equity loan as a down payment in the next but I need help understanding the financials.
Here are the details:
Current Home (hot area, homes under contract in a week. Love this house and location but schools are not great and sick of shared walls with noisy, rude neighbors)

• Bought in 2011 for $158k, current mortgage is about $1200 (4.25% rate)
• Same townhouses in our street have been selling in the $305-$350k range (5 on same street sold in past year, nearly identical floorplans)
• Current mortgage balance is $112k
• Estimate up to $150k equity after selling costs
• Rents are $1800 - $2000+ on our street

• Budget up to $420k
• Would need up to $140k as downpayment (this would be from the home equity)

Hey! I was experimenting with different shortcut actions, and I’m struggling to create a shortcut for my school day schedule that I can use with Siri. I am looking to create a shortcut that checks the day of the week, and spits out a response based on that day with different event times for each shortcut. I thought about just using Calendar and creating reoccurring events, but for some reason the Apple Calendar app can’t get specific with event times down to the minute, which is a problem for me. I want to be able to ask Siri, “What time does lunch start?” and the shortcut to be intelligent enough to know what time lunch starts on a Monday, versus the rest of the week. I also want the shortcuts to be able to do the same thing with my different class times as well. If anyone is willing to help me figure it out myself, or make it for me, I would be willing to pay you for your help!
