A Voyage - The Sage of Flower-Hill 3

2023.05.30 22:08 SandraSandraSandra A Voyage - The Sage of Flower-Hill 3

Djamä Sonurupākä-Pēzjeceni stands, looking out over the labour before him. A series of four paddies are being built off of Dogwood-Point. Two of them dig earth from the point to make the paddy, the other two enclose rectangles of the lake with mounds of earth. To his rear, NāpäkoduThonu works on four paddies of their own.
The clans cooperated on the project, building the outer-walls together in the early-days of summer where the lake’s level gets low enough for it to be doable. Now they’re expanding their paddies in one of the biggest projects Konuthomu has ever known.
Sonurupākä’s main role is to direct. And he wears his resplendent cape of feathers to indicate such—even if he also wears the simple quarter-dome hat of a farmer. He sends the young men carrying baskets of earth to the eastern medial causeway. When needed, he steps in and offers aid. But in this moment, he puffs gently on his pipe. Enjoying the heady rush of fresh-air and warm smoke.
Someone calls him over, there’s a section of clay in one of the inner-paddies being excavated.
Screams fill the hall. Senisedjarha, his wife, is in labour. He was rushed away by the duNothudo as they take care of her. He was left mixing ashes for glaze and hearing his love’s cries from across the field.
This is their second child. Their first, a beautiful baby girl, is bouncing on her grandmother’s knee. It’s a good omen to have such a hardy first-born. But it doesn’t ease his anxiety at the second birth.
He mixes in the rotu ash—it should form a grassy green once fired—with the wet clay and stirs it vigorously.
The baby is coming later than expected. The duNothudo assured them that it wouldn’t be a problem, that the best fruit simply take longer to grow. He was supposed to be gone on a trading mission by this point. The canoes are already prepared. But it would be a variation from the kacä to abandon his wife now.
Next he mixes the birch ash—this one forms a creamy white, tinged with yellow. It’s almost a buttery colour.
Senisedjarha is strong though. And while the pregnancy has exhausted her, especially the past moon of it—her belly even more gravid than with the first pregnancy, the stores have been full and the weather kind. She’s been able to rest, drinking broth on their bed of furs.
Now, he mixes red slip with willow ash. This one is far more slip-forward. The ash gives it its sheen and flow, the bursts of colour and shine which makes the glaze all the more vibrant.
He’s to visit the land of the Rhadämā, those strange feather-less folk. Their cargo is wine (mostly maple), jade tools, and the glazed pots his current labour allows.
Finally, he mixes oak ash with bright-red slip. The smooth, green-blue glaze which results is perfect for lining urns. Some things you want to breathe through the unglazed clay, but others you want to keep sealed. It’s a delicate balance.
He pauses, unsure of the change and caught up in his work. The screaming has stopped. He rushes back to the house.
Two rambunctious baby boys. He holds Seni’s hand while holding the first-born of the two. An auspicious sign.
It had been a painful labour, and his wife’s exhausted. Drained. But two healthy baby boys. He can’t believe their luck. Two marriages of equal prestige to bring additional clans onto their path? It’s more than he could have ever hoped.
Knee deep in water, he guides the boat out. Full of pots, the canoes sit low in the lake. Eight men for eight canoes, a sizable contingent. He’s been tasked to bring gifts and trade in hopes of establishing a more permanent relationship with the Rhadämā of Kamābarha.
The Cakäma of DjamäThamä, where his two new sons will be given names, remains three turns away. He prays he’ll be back in time.
Clambering out of the lake, he readies himself to go. Even this early in the morning, he knows the day will be hot and a gentle mist rises with the sun over the lake.
He clasps the hands of the duNothudo in turn, pledging that he will travel honest and true. Laughing at Redotsuko’s quip. He finally reaches his wife, the youngest of the duNothudo, and the one most dear to him.
As they hug, she whispers in his ear: “Return swift and safe, your family waits for you.”
Speeches and recitations and other such fanfare follow, as Sonurupākä climbs into his canoe, and sets off towards the rising sun. His eyes may be wet, but his path is clear. Duties to clan come before all else, even these first few months of his sons’ lives. The paddling becomes rhythmic. There is only one way, and that is forward. He simply hopes, and prays, it leads him back home.
It’s their third day of travel. The weather has remained clear, and bright. Their first two nights they stayed in houses of DjamäThanä. Lovely, low provincial halls—not dissimilar to the one in which Sonurupākä was born and raised. A life a world away now, even if, in factuality, merely feather and name separates that him from the him in the canoe now.
He sips a skin of crabapplecider, and grabs a mouthful of the pickle mix: bison and pawpaw and sumac and blackberry and brire. It’s sour, a little salty. The sweetness and tartness of the berries cut through the rich fat of the bison. He’s dressed in a loincloth, a farmer’s hat (a round, quarter-dome offering shade protection) and has a plain-hemp cape hanging from his shoulders, protecting his back from the sun. It’s a lovely day.
Rowing once more, he thinks about his mission. Kamābarha is not alien to the people of Konuthomu. They may have forgotten their feathers, but they’re skilled craftsmen and produce a lovely nut. Travel is frequent between the villages. And even without feathers, the people govern themselves well. They know of the wisdom of crone’s, and put the vitality of young men to service. Sure, their way of speech may be harsher, atonal in a way. But it’s not that far off from Menidān, and easy to learn. Compare the language of Rhadämā to that of the Jeli—infrequent visitors here, but known further west. Rhadämā is a poem in the wrong meter, Jeli is more similar to the barking of dogs. But what can you expect from people with neither lake nor feathers?
Voyages such as this gives one plenty of time to think. He hopes his aids back home are preparing the pottery well. They’ve expanded the workshop below the Themilanan. Three kilns, a lengthy pottery space, plenty of storage for the clay. Small-folk of DjamäThanä do most of the actual pot construction, but the glazes are kept in the Themilanan. So too is the knowledge of organizing the fire for the kiln to burn properly hot. The duNothudo should assure his Good-Brother does the firing properly. He hopes so, at least.
They practice Rhadämā over dinner, forming the words again and again. Sonurupākä insists: passable is insufficient, his accent must be perfect.
They have easy access to food, with the plentiful waterfowl and fish, but he missed the plentiful wine and pickles of home. Rhadämā wine is tasty from what he remembers though.
After eight days of travel, they approach Kamābarha.

ID My Dog
This is Koda. he is sensitive to noise and change in his environment.
He loves food, very trainable, medium energy, 32 lbs, and currently 7 years old. He has incredibly soft fur that grows long, so he gets groomed a few times a year. He doesn’t shed much. When his fur is shorter or it rains, it appears crimped.
He loves attention and is most attached to his owner, he follows her around everywhere. He likes people in general and is mostly indifferent to dogs.
His bark is loud and sometimes long, almost a howl but not that long.

2023.05.30 21:15 cassandra2048 Boyfriend Not Invited to Huge Blowout Wedding with All Our Friends

My (27F) boyfriend (30M) and I got together around the time one of my best friends was finalizing the guest list for her huge destination wedding. My friend and I met just out of undergrad and have been very close ever since. I am a bridesmaid.
At the time, she said no plus ones allowed. She also set a policy of “no ring, no bring,” aka only inviting spouses or fiancés of our friends (although made an exception for two couples she knew particularly well). As a result, one friend’s (not in the bridal party) girlfriend of six years was not invited (though we despise the girlfriend and they don’t live together), but one friend’s (also not in the bridal party) fiancé she had been dating for less than a year and was otherwise a complete rando was formally invited. My friend said she was worried about making exceptions to the rule because her family is quite large, the venue is very expensive, and she thought everyone would ask to be an exception (even though she already made exceptions). People have already been hounding her about whether they can bring their second cousin’s boyfriend’s dog walker, etc.
Over the course of several months, my boyfriend became very close with the bride and groom-to-be. They love him. We moved in together and have plans to get engaged. By the time of their wedding, we will be together for two years. I didn’t say anything, thinking he would later get an invite, but he didn’t.
I finally asked my friend to make an exception and she said that she couldn’t because of cost and numbers. It seemed like she was offended I even asked because she has vented to me about others asking. I am very disappointed because all of our friends will be there, and almost all will have their partners with them. (All the other bridesmaids will.) It will be the first time many of us have gotten together all in one place since COVID, and we have been very excited.
In addition, I am in charge of planning the bachelorette. Between the bachelorette, the flights, the hotel for the wedding, the multiple outfit changes (there are 9 separate events over the course of 4 days), taking off work and more, it will cost me upwards of $2,000, maybe more. I am well off but that is almost one month of rent where I live.
I told her I accepted her response and this would not change our friendship in anyway, but now I am feeling extremely hurt and disrespected. I thought maybe if I slept on it (this happened 3 weeks ago) it would be less raw, but I am still upset. I am also worried the events will be less enjoyable for me if I am surrounded by all my friends and their partners who made the cut, but my partner can’t join. I know it’s not about me, but this will be over a period of four days. If I change my RSVP, the friendship will be over and it will affect the entire group. I am not trying to cause drama. I have not even told any one else in the group because of this. It is also her wedding and she wants it to be perfect and she is feeling a lot of pressure from all angles. She has been a great friend to me for many years.
Help!

Now among monkeys grooming is a social/health thing and I'd understand why they'd like pets. But cows don't pet each other, or cats, or dogs, or pigs, bearded dragons, cockatiels etc. etc.

2023.05.30 19:47 SweetTooth2044 Looking for a Mentor? Instructor?

Hey there!
I feel like a total idiot asking this but how did you find a mentor or an instructor? 38 F who has done her safety courses, applied for her RPAL/PAL, and just impatiently waiting for it. Eastern-ish Ontario (Belleville/Quinte West). The local range is members only, no guests.
I am new to guns, shooting, and moving away from friends who introduced me to it all. I am interested in trap, competitive shooting, and eventually hunting/competing with dogs when I become a good shot.
Anyone in the area want to adopt me?

2023.05.30 19:37 eternalkittenMum I travel w my cats once a week for work, introducing a new kitten, HELP!!

Hi everyone, I need some serious advice here.
I have 3 cats: 3 year old sphynx female [Pea], 1.5 year old sphynx male [Pickle], and a 6 week old female Siamese rescue kitten I’ve recently decided to care for and adopt [Tigra]. My two older cats go with me everywhere. From car rides, to stroller walks around my city.
I’ve had Pea since she was 2 months old. Raised as a single kitten but was with her litter for a decent time. She was very energetic, playful, and communicative as a kitten but has become increasingly reserved and independent as she’s gotten older. She still has that previous side to her, but tends to want her space more often, isn’t afraid to communicate that, and is bonded/affectionate primarily towards me. She very much has princess behavior.
I got Pickle at 4 months when Pea was like 1.5yrs. Before Pickle, I’d often be gone a couple days out of the week. Pea would free feed and always seemed to be fine/even enjoy the alone time; but I thought that (considering her amount of energy) a companion would be more beneficial.
I was very careful about taking introductions slow. Regardless, Pea was very mean, hissy and grumpy for a while. When they finally began to interact face to face, Pea would bully Pickle a lot, it would stress me out and make me cry because he was so tiny. Eventually though, Pickle grew and overtime they’ve become pretty bonded.
Pickle is almost 2 now but he still behaves like a kitten: veryyyy playful, energetic, talkative, dog-like. I feel like Pea’s personality has slightly changed since getting Pickle (possibly why she’s more reserved?) but also thought that was just due to her age. Pickle is twice Pea’s size and definitely annoys her, she’ll hiss, but she likes him overall. They groom and sleep with each other regularly. And when we leave the house for travel, they even prefer being in the same carrier.
I have an apartment, but I leave once a week for two days (for work) and stay at a relatives house, where I have my own area/set up for the kitties. So they come with me. This is a routine that they’re very used to and fine with. They’ve grown to even enjoy riding/listening to music in my car. They also seem to enjoy themselves my relatives home, but there’s more traffic there so they (especially Pea) feel more relaxed in my apartment.
So recently I took on this new kitten Tigra. She’s very chill, cuddly, gentle and sweet. I’d been thinking about this for a while, because I felt as though Pickle was too energetic for Pea. And because Pea loves cuddling up with warm, soft fur. New kitty could simultaneously entertain Pickle enough for Pea to have her space sometimes, and also be the more chill, warm fuzzy companion Pea needs.
So far, Pickle is sooo friendly and aside from a few swats, has been pretty accepting and playful towards the kitten. But introductions have been rough with Pea. She’s been grumpy, swatting at her brother, hissing at me occasionally, growling, hiding in her bed.
Tigra was rescued near my work, so I’ve been at my relatives house for nearly a week with them because it’s a bigger (separated) space & Pea has been so aggravated by the scent of the new kitty that I’m nervous to travel with them/bring them all back to my (smaller) apartment.
Tigra and Pickle are becoming friends fast and Tigra thankfully travels well too. I’m wondering if I, for now, should leave Pea at my apartment when I’m gone to help the transition? I keep them in separate spaces in my apartment also so I figured it would give her time to be alone andget used to Tigra’s scent without the stress of her being present.
I used to leave her alone and free feed her when she was a single cat and she was happy. But if I’m traveling with the other two like usual, will she stop recognizing Pickle’s scent too and get more angry? Will the repetitive coming and going be MORE stressful/confusing for Pea or will the scent of Tigra’s area combined with time alone be enough for Pea to recognize/get used to a new kitten in the house? I’m home 5 days in a row each week so they WILL be around each other the majority of the time.
HELP!!!!!!

Curled up thing that puppy had in its mouth for a sec
Posting for a coworker. She said she saw her puppy had this in her mouth for a sec. She said the green stuff seemed to be from the bug. She thinks it got into the house on its own because it's unlikely the puppy brought it in. She is worried that it might be harmful to the dog. For reference, we live in Central FL, 1 hour west of Orlando. She says if it was stretched out it would be about an inch and a half long and it was about 1/2 an inch thick. My initial guess was some kind of caterpillar.

2023.05.30 18:26 Humble_tarts HELP: Is it time for my friend to leave her NF to get better pay?

Hey everyone! I am posting this story here to get your perspective for my friend (55F) who is a nanny for a family that I personally tutor for. I have been a nanny in the past, but not for this family. All names fake for privacy obviously.
Here’s the story. My friend, Mandy, has been with this family for 4 years. Mandy is a mom of 9 kids (5 are step kids) and has a background in cleaning houses. She’s very experienced and has a heart of absolute gold. She accepted this job after a divorce and just wants to make it until she can retire in about 5 years. When she started, the kids (twins) were 11 years old and NM had just gotten a huge promotion into a C-Suite level position at a worldwide company. Mandy started only as a nanny with no expectation of cleaning, laundry, etc but as time has gone on and the kids have gotten older and more independent (both now 15) her role has turned more into that of a house manager and driver for extracurricular activities. Some of her new roles have included managing access to the home for renovation projects, managing/hiring/firing cleaning ladies, taking dogs to grooming appointments, training the dogs, kids to personal training and sports, laundry, making beds, repotting houseplants etc.
Last fall, the family moved to a larger house which has been a nightmare. Mandy’s role has changed even more dramatically. NM now wants her to do landscaping and clean the new pool, as well as supervise the twins having friends over to swim all summer. The house is way bigger and NM fired the old cleaning crew expecting Mandy to pick up the difference. Mandy has never told this family “No.”
Mandy’s rate started at $20/hr for 20 hours per week. Around the time of their big move to this new house, she asked for a raise to $30/hr. This is the first time in 4 years that they have discussed her pay rate in any way. NM said they would bump her rate to $25/hr with $50/wk in gas, and discuss again in May the possibility of going up to $30/hr. Well, May has come and almost gone with no word from NM. Mandy texted her and said something along the lines of “we were planning to discuss my raise in May. I am free to stay Monday after my normal hours to discuss or we can call on Sunday afternoon.” She got the following message back:
“Mandy - I’m not sure now is the time to revisit the issue of an increase. The schedules have been so inconsistent and there has been so much time away that it’s difficult to gauge whether an increase is appropriate at this point. And since January I am paying you an additional $100/wk plus $50/wk in gas ($600/mo) as it is. Perhaps we can discuss this at the end of the year.”
I am so mad for her that not only was she denied the raise, but she didn’t even get the chance to discuss it with NM!!
Two things to add. First, NM recently received another HUGE promotion. So big that our newspaper wrote an article about her. She makes $600k+ a year on her own. ND is a lawyer, so it’s not like they’re hurting for money. Second, Mandy’s mom died suddenly in February and her elderly father is not well so this calendar year, she has had to miss about a month of work spread out over 5 months. This is the first time she’s taken more than a couple days at a time off work since being with NF. Also, all of this is done under the table with no contract.
I’m very much in the camp that NF doesn’t appreciate her and the work that she does to keep their family running smoothly and I believe she deserves the $30/hr, no questions asked. I know I’m biased however so I would love to get your thoughts to share with her. Is it time for her to find a new NF or should she stick it out until the end of the year and hope she gets the raise then?

2023.05.30 18:13 ColonelEwart Second time surrendering my wheaten - cautiously optimistic

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my story, just to get it out I guess.
I have (had?) a two year Wheaten that we got as a puppy from what seemed like a reputable breeder. We got her at the height of pandemic restrictions in our area, so we tried our best to socialize her with other dogs and people while she was young.
As she got older, she seemed to show heightened anxiety and fear-based reactivity (false aggression as one of the behaviorists we spoke to called it). Her triggers were varied, we live on a busy residential street with a lot of foot traffic, we have a young child at home who is busy, loud and rambunctious. It just seemed like she would spend her days constantly on edge. On leash, she was inconsistent, ignoring one person walking by, barking and lunging at the next. Garbage trucks and buses were the bane of her existence. People coming to the house were unacceptable. Her saliva is still dried on the windows besider the front door from telling Amazon delivery to go away. We were constantly concerned that our own alertness and scanning for possible triggers would slip up and she would bite someone. There were close calls.
But we loved this dog. She may have only loved eight people in the world, but she loved us. She was cuddly, affectionate, smart and funny. We tried training (multiple classes, one behaviorist and another over a phone consult), medication (Gabapentin upset her sensitive stomach, Trazodone seemed to work a bit, but maybe that was just confirmation bias?), we changed her diet from grain-free to include grain to help with serotonin and absorbing tryptophan from her calming chews, we stopped having company over, we exercised her more, we exercised her less.
After a year of challenges and six months of really trying everything in our toolbox, we were honest with ourselves that we didn't have the tools or skills. We couldn't change our environment, change the fact we had a child, change the fact that our needs and desires for life didn't align with what we felt she needed. We offered her back to the breeder who demurred for some unrelated personal reasons and so we found a rescue that is supposed to specialize in dogs with anxiety.
It was so so hard giving her up. She was scared, I was sad. I had to leave her in her crate because the rescue was concerned about her on leash (she had this possessive/protective vein with her people, so once I left, she calmed down, but me handing her over wasn't going to work, I guess). So my last view of her was her barking through the crate, scared, confused, angry.
She went to a family who had owned a Wheaten before as a foster-to-adopt. She was there for maybe a month. Something happened with a cat, which I guess surprised the family and the rescue (details weren't really shared with us). She's a terrier, she's never met a cat before, one of her breed characteristics is to chase furry things that dart around. The family returned her to the rescue who then placed her with another family. They had another dog who she got along with, but they also decided she didn't need meds and then felt after a few weeks that she was preventing them from having company over. No shit. It's only been a few weeks. But they returned her back to the rescue.
So the rescue then returned her to us. They, the specialists, said they couldn't do anything more.
I was and am convinced she's a good dog, who just needs some help. I know that we couldn't provide that help, but it felt like a lot of the doors were closed. It felt like everyone had their own bias and their own angles. Behaviorists said it was a training issue and that the vet was only looking to push medication. Phrasing it like that felt like a judgement against us and how we cared for the dog.
We made plans to bring the dog back into our home with no idea what we would do next. My wife and I talked about BE (which our vet was supportive of) and what story we would have to tell our son. I called the breeder again, left numerous messages, begging for her to call back or help in some way.
Finally, she did. She connected us to a trainer who lives in a rural area who was willing to take the dog to foster her, work with her and maybe someday rehome her.
I was able to pick up the dog on Sunday, spend the night with her in a rented cottage and then drop her off on Monday at the new spot. That way we didn't have to bring her to the house and tell another story to our son on where the dog was or where she was going. Her coat hadn't been groomed since we first surrendered her so she looked like she was wearing a rumpled and disheveled suit and given her experience, the visual really fit. She was so relieved to see me, or maybe I just was to see her again. Again, maybe perception bias, but it felt like she was able to finally(?) relax and feel safe in the 24 hours I spent with her. We had salmon for dinner together, slept in the same bed.
Drop off was a completely different story. We went into the house together, she wandered around while I spoke to her new owner. She seemed less stressed, I felt less stressed. We got to say a proper goodbye.
So, I've had to give my dog away twice. Trying to find the best future possible for her. I really feel like she needs a comprehensive approach, possibly both medication and training. Our vet spoke to us about Prozac, but by the time it was an option we weren't in a position to try to transition her across (the vet said it would take 4-6 weeks to take affect).
I still feel like maybe we could have done more, maybe with some more patience, more time we could have cracked the nut for her behavior and had a dog that would tolerate strangers or at least be able to relax after being triggered. I love this dog and it's the combination of the guilt from giving her up, the feeling that I may have been the one who understood her best, the pride that comes with that, but also the acknowledgement of my failures and shortcomings as a dog owner.
Part of me wants her to come back, maybe not now, maybe after she's had someone more skilled help her out, but part of me feels that we don't deserve that or that she doesn't deserve that. Part of me thinks I'm never going to be able welcome a dog into my house again.
I know it's cliche, but the saying about loving something and letting it go rings through my head. It's so hard right now, even as I continue to remind myself that this is the best chance for success she has.

2023.05.30 18:00 cowzilla3 The Great Spice Off: Pinnacle Grooming The Good Ship OS

Hello and welcome to the 23rd installment of The Great Spice Off! What is The Great Spice Off?
I love the scent of Old Spice, so much so that it's the only aftershave I use as I don't really feel a need to splash anything else on. But, as we all know, Old Spice no longer makes shaving soap. They do still make a cream but that's hardly a great soap and it doesn't actually smell like Old Spice. As such my plan is to test out all the Old Spice options that are out there on as many bases as possible both to try out a variety of bases from different soapmakers and to report back to you on who really nails the scent.
I'll be shaving three times with each soap, using a variety of brushes and razors, and blades. Yes, I know that means it won't be exactly scientific but this is going to take a while and I want to use all my other shit too. Soaps will be rated on a few factors and given points from 1-5 for each.

Pinnacle Grooming The Good Ship OS

Pinnacle Grooming is a UK-based soapmaker with a pretty solid following around the wetshaving community. I couldn't find exactly when they launched but their Facebook page says it was created in October of 2019 and since we all know social media is nothing but a bastion of truth I'm going to say it was around then. They say their ingredients are ethically and sustainably sourced but it's a little hard to trust them on the whole for reasons we'll dive into in a few paragraphs. (That's called a teaser, now you have to keep reading to find out THE SHOCKING TRUTH).
The Good Ship OS was a late addition to the series despite launching in 2021, well before I began digging around for Old Spice dupes. That may be because, from what I've seen, Pinnacle Grooming released this soap on a limited release, meaning once it was gone it was gone and it appears that The Good Ship OS is gone (outside of The Razor Company's stock, which is where I picked the soap up). This actually seems to be something they do often as their site notes, in some awkwardly written English, that they release limited editions of scents in order to cater to their cutomer's needs. Those scents seem to range from the weird (nutmeg/green appple/rose) to their "take" on already established scents.
"Take" is, of course, a controversial word in the land of duping and there's no clear statement from them on if they're just using dupe scents they've bought or actually building their own but most soapmakers aren't very clear on that anyway. I think this is meant to be a straight dupe but they do list two scent notes that don't always appear in descriptions of Old Spice: Clary Sage and Frankincense. So in the top layer you have the addition of Clary Sage alongside the more normally listed notes of Orange, Lemon, Spices, Anise, and Aldehydes. The middle notes are all the same with Cinnamon, Carnation, Geranium, Jasmine, Heliotrope, and Pimento berry. Then the base notes add in Frankincense to accompany the traditional Vanilla, Musk, Cedarwood, Benzoin, Tonka, and Ambergris.
The base is a bit of a hodgepodge of stuff you find in shaving soaps, with a wide variety of oils, butters, and other soapy things tossed in. It honestly reads like the creation of a child in their dad's soapmaking lab who just pores everything into the pot and lucks out with creating a soap: Beef Tallow. Potassium Stearate. Mango Butter. Distilled Water. Avocado Oil. Castor Oil. Goats Milk. Olive Oil. Aloe Vera Juice. Kokum Butter. Vegetable Glycerine. Almond Oil. Shea Butter. Silk Amino Acid. Coconut Oil. Lanolin. Grape Seed Extract. Bentonite Clay. Cocoa Butter. Camellia Oil. Sodium Lactate. Vitamin E Pure. mica pigment s (CI77019, CI77891, CI77288) Fragrance & Essential Oils. Gotta give props as always for goats milk, though. The soap itself is on the harder side and a darker color, heading into dark brown territory.
On a side note, Pinnacle Grooming did something pretty awesome with this soap. For every purchase £2.00 was donated to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), which seems to be the British equivalent of the the U.S. Coast Guard... or maybe the Coast Guard is the U.S. equivalent of the RNLI. Anyway, it seems like a good cause and they even posted a picture of the donations being sent to their Facebook page.
Sadly, no matter how good this review is or isn't and no matter where some of the proceeds go, I can't recommend buying from Pinnacle as they appear to be thieves. I thought at first that Pinnacle Grooming had some of the coolest artwork around with a variety of unique images, unfortunatley that seems to be because they've stolen most of it. I ran about 10 searches on random artwork on their tubs and every single one of them came from either an artist's website, a literal official piece of character artwork, or one of those t-shirt design sites. This extends to The Good Ship OS artwork, which appears to be taken from an artist named Ian Gowdie. The piece itself is a fantastic rendition of what I assume to be an RNLI lifeboat cutting through a brisk sea, supposedly on its way to save someone's life while smelling really fucking good. I bet whomever it saves will instantly say something like, "Thank you for saving me, and damn you smell good." But despite being perfect for an Old Spice soap container, it's not theirs to use. They don't credit any of the artists anywhere on their page that I can see nor do they mention it on the tub so even if they did pay for a digital copy of every piece of art on a tub it's still pretty shitty and a total bummer.
Caveat: I would be happy, by the way, to be proven wrong about that and discover that they are paying the artists for their art but it seems unlikely. And now I've spent two hours doing research on a shaving soap company and the images on some fucking tubs, basically ruining my desire for the soap itself so... now I'm just grumpy. Let's get on with the review (which was actually written first and not influenced by any of the above).
Oldness: 3
While they may be aiming for a dupe, Pinnacle Grooming should really market this as a riff. They aren't veering far off from the original but the scent feels different. Off the puck, the soap is especially strong in the anise with the citrus playing hard in there as well. That settles down on the shave with the on-point middle notes and base coming through stronger but it still isn't a traditional Old Spice scent. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely an Old Spice scent but there's something a bit fresher and more modern to it. Maybe it's the Clary Sage but I couldn't tell you what that actually smells like or who this suspicious Clary person is and why he's got special sage.
Spiciness: 5
Honestly, I love this scent. It feels fresh and modern for some reason and at some point I'm going to have to buy some U.S. Old Spice to see if it maybe matches closer to that. Part of this is, of course, the fact that it's just something different enough from the OG scent I'm using all the time to stand out but it's also really great to smell. There's something incredibly refreshing about Good Ship OS that makes it actually fit with the sea-faring theme of Old Spice -- like a brisk breeze on the ocean air. It's not aquatic but it feels like something you would wear while on a boat, going fast, wearing a nautical-themed pashmina afghan.
Lather: 2
Pinnacle's Base builds up easily enough for sure but what it builds into is kind of lackluster. The lather is kind of airy no matter how long you work it. It's not so bad that it looks broken or overly thin but it never heats that glorious zone where the lather turns into a slick, fluffy mess. It's also super thirsty, which isn't always a bad thing but does mean that it can be tricky to dial in if you're not patient, which we all know is a strong suit of people shaving their faces at 6 a.m.
Shave: 3
Sometimes an airy lather can still deliver a great shave, which is one of the reasons that I separate shave and lather. The Good Ship OS kind of does. In fact, the shave is all sorts of "kind of." It's got kind of good cushion, and kind of good slickness, and kind of good face feel. Nothing stands out especially about it but it's definitely not delivering a bad shave either, plus it helps that the scent is so good. I will say that it doesn't do much in the residual slickness department but, again, it's not terrible.
Good Ship doesn't do anything to special on the face despite the presence of goat milk (and a bajillion other face-softening ingredients)! I'm not sure how that's possible but maybe they're getting their milk from lackluster goats. You know, the shady kind that eat the wrong kind of grass. Anyway, it's a perfectly fine post-shave feel but now we come to the real rub. This more "modern/brisk" verson of Old Spice doesn't play so well with the classic scent of the aftershaves. It's OK with the Indian version, where the elevated anise and crisper scents mingle fine, but put it with the vintage one and it goes together about as well as stolen art and a moral compass. (OK, that last sentence was edited post research it originally said "a fish and a bicycle.") While its score could easily be improved by one by just not using an aftershave that doesn't work with its scent, the point here is to use Old Spice as much as possible so I had to ding it.
Final Verdict: 15
Why, oh, why is this fantastic scent stuck in this middling soap (and attached to a crummy company). The Good Ship OS delivers one of my favorite takes on Old Spice but can't manage anything else great and has a shave that is simply on par. The soap is a cut above the truly terrible ones, easily, but it can't deliver anything special either. Maybe, outside of the confines of this review system, I'd like it more but within the bounds of The Great Spice Off it mostly misses the mark.

2023.05.30 17:50 DeathTwinkle6 Update AITAH for not driving for my ex to see out daughter

About a month ago I wrote in with a story about my dead beat ex wanting me to drive halfway between Florida and West Virginia so he could have our daughter for a month. It got read on the podcast and I felt so vindicated. Thank you everyone that responded and thank you boys for your input.
There have been some things that have happened in this saga since then. The first being I found out he was trying to figure out money for a plane ticket to Minnesota to see a woman. Not a girlfriend, just a fwb. I was enraged that he couldn't put the same effort into his daughter. He sees her maybe twice a year.
I also had messaged to try to figure out when he would be coming to get her. After not giving me a straight answer for 30 minutes (and me pushing him to) he finally said he was going to try to get Saturday 5/27 off and drive down to get her then leave on Sunday 5/28. Later in the week he messaged saying he couldn't get that day off and would need to pick her up the first week of June. Okay fine, plans change.
Today I message to make sure he's able to get her and find out times. He says he's driving down Saturday evening. I ask when is he planning to leave with our daughter. He tells me "we're gonna just head straight back out." I'm like "You're not gonna sleep?" This is a 12-14 hour drive and I'm not keen on letting my child in a car with someone who is going to try to drive here and back with no sleep.
He answers "Where? I'm going to have all 3 dogs. Unless you can watch the dogs while I nap in the car I cant." I ask if the dogs won't let him sleep in the car. (I've got 2 dogs and 2 cats and there's no way I can watch all 3 of his dogs, 2 of them big untrained dogs.)
He then proceeds to jump on my case, asking if i think he's made of money, that he's going to be spending $250 in gas and is trying to keep up with bills and that he's not welcome at his moms house (she lives 2 streets over). He's not welcome there because he was a complete ass to her and his step dad and tried to get me to keep our daughter from seeing them ever again. I'm still good friends with them, our daughter sees them, and we heard from their side what he accused them of and how it was not the case.
He then goes on about how I'm acting like he's dumb and shouldn't assume he's not going to sleep. I told him I'm just reacting to the information he gave me and not jump on me because of it. He kept trying to say how I'm somehow wrong and stupid for assuming he wasn't going to sleep, and he starts telling me about his plans to nap on the way down and back and how he's trying to get people to watch the dogs.
I'm like you didn't tell me any of this so don't get on me cause I reacted to the misinformation you gave me. He said he wasn't getting on me, "I didn't use all caps". I sent him a screen shot of where he cussed at me and told me I was acting like he was stupid. I then told him I'm done with the conversation and put him on mute for 8 hours.
This is what our whole 15 years was. He says one thing, I react to it then I'm horrible for assuming the thing he said is really what he meant. No wonder I'm still in therapy and have anxiety 3 years after the divorce.

2023.05.30 17:34 Mara216 Mini schnauzer handstrip/coat/groom

Mini schnauzer handstrip/coat/groom
My mini schnauzer’s been groomed three times. Twice at petco and once at home (not by me). I’m interested in hand stripping my dog but doing everything myself instead of going to a groomer’s. I don’t know if it’s true but I read somewhere that if a coat has been clipped, it’s not impossible to fix. However, I learned that not all coats can be hand stripped. I tried to find the best photos I could of my dog’s coat and included three photos of each time she’s been groomed. I’ve done some research and looked at pictures but I’m still struggling to tell the difference between a soft and wiry coat, and shaved vs not shaved vs clipped. From the pictures I showed, what was done to the coat? Was it clipped? Too short? In the last photo, the coat my dog has today, does it look like it can be hand stripped? If no, can it ever be hand stripped in the future?

2023.05.30 17:30 NeutroBlack54 PetSmart Vet Bills Reimbursement?

We had our dog groomed for 1st time ever, an 11 year old chocolate lab. She had a very bad allergic reaction to the shampoo they used on her skin. Also something must have occured because her eyes swelled up to a point where she couldn't open it, had puss and blood everywhere.
We called the store to see what's process of reimbursement of 2 vets bills totaling over $600 the following day. Has anyone ever done ANYTHING similar to this?
PetSmart says the vet has to send a note saying they are responsible to open an investigation so hoping that happens but I'm sure PetSmart is going to swindle their way out of this one...
