With only days separating us from the Centenary Edition of the 24 Heures du Mans, it's time again for the Le Mans Primer thread! This is the place if you’ve got any questions about the 2023 Le Mans event, no matter how small! There are no dumb questions about Le Mans!

The Race

It all comes back to Le Mans. A century ago, people asked ‘Could a car continue to drive for 24 hours straight?’, an event was made to test that theory, and a legacy in racing, motorsport, and motoring was born. The 24 Heures du Mans is the holy grail of endurance motor racing, and brings up its Centenary edition this year. In its 100 year history, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is recognised as the most prestigious and gruelling test for innovations and improvements in motorsport technology. Technologies such as disk and air brakes, streamlined bodywork, fuel, oil, and lubricant improvements, improvements to engine efficiency and longevity, even things as simple as LED lighting and windscreen wiper blades have been trialled and tested at Le Mans. The normally hot conditions in the middle of June stretch the limits of reliability, with all the teams knowing that in order to beat their competitors, they must first beat the event. A variety of different engine configurations, displacements, positions, fuels, and hybrids have won over the history of the event. So far, petrol-fuelled traditional piston engines have been the most successful. Mazda managed to win using a Wankel Rotary engine in 1991 with the Mazda 787b (oh god listen to that sound!), while Audi was the first to win with an alternate fuel, taking victory in the diesel-powered R10 TDI in 2006. 2012 ushered in the era of the Hybrid, with Audi taking victory in the R18 e-tron Quattro, featuring a flywheel hybrid engine.

Qualifying

The Qualifying format for Le Mans is unique to the event, and called Hyperpole. In this format, all classes are permitted to use the track in the 1 hour qualifying session on Wednesday evening. The top 6 cars from each of the 4 classes then progress to the Hyperpole session on Thursday night, which sets the top of the grid for each class. This means that each class will be segregated on the final grid.

The Track

The Circuit de la Sarthe covers 13.6 kilometres of the French country side. It combines the permanent race components of the Ford Chicanes, the pit straight, under the Dunlop Bridge and through to Tertre Rouge as well as the normal everyday roads of the Mulsanne straight through to Indianapolis and Arnage. The track has gone through many iterations over the years; originally, the cars raced into the heart of the city, turning just before the river Sarthe, before hurtling down the 8.6 kilometre straight. In 1932, the circuit removed the journey into the city, and more closely resembled the track we see today. Here’s a video of Mike Hawthorn touring the circuit with a camera and microphone attached in 1956, one year after his involvement in the Le Mans disaster. The addition of the Porsche Curves and the Ford Chicanes in 1972 added an extra dimension to the high speed, fast flowing track. In the late 80’s, the Group C prototype cars would reach over 400km/h, achieving average speeds of almost 250km/h in qualifying for the entire lap. This is an onboard of Derek Bell’s Porsche 956 in 1983, showing the ridiculous speeds on this configuration of the circuit. This configuration remained relatively unchanged right up to 1990, until FIA mandations required that for the circuit to be sanctioned, it must not have a straight longer than 2km. The 6km Mulsanne straight was cut down into three relatively equal length portions by two chicanes, giving the iteration of the circuit used today. Allan McNish takes you on an onboard lap of the 2008 circuit in this video. McNish is one of the gods of the modern prototype era, winning Le Mans 3 times; once with Porsche and twice with Audi. The Dunlop Bridge
The iconic Dunlop Bridge has been a part of the Le Mans track since 1932, making it the oldest Dunlop Bridge at any track. This part of the track requires a good launch out of the first chicane before cresting the brow of the hill, and plunging through the esses out onto the Mulsanne straight. As the LMP cars are much more maneuverable, caution must be taken passing the slower GT traffic, as Allan McNish discovered in 2011.
Tertre Rouge
Tertre Rouge is the corner that launches the cars onto the long Mulsanne straight. Maintaining momentum through this corner as it opens on exit is imperative to ensure maximum straight line speed heading down the first part of the Mulsanne. The undulation in the road makes for fantastic viewing at night, with some magic images of the Porsches throwing up sparks on the exit in 2014. Finally, this was the location of Allan Simonsen’s fatal crash in mixed conditions in the 2013 Le Mans. The Danish flags will fly at the corner in his memory.
Mulsanne Corner
After the incredibly long Mulsanne straight, the Mulsanne corner nowadays features a subtle right hand kink before the tight 90 degree turn. Here, the cars decelerate from 340 km/h down to below 100 km/h, resulting in a brilliant opportunity to overtake. Again, care must be taken overtaking slower traffic; unaware drivers have caught out faster cars attempting to pass through the kink, such as Anthony Davidson’s spectacular crash in 2012 resulting in a broken vertebra for Davidson.
Indianapolis and Arnage
The Indanapolis and Arnage complex is one of the most committed areas of the track. Hurtling down the hill from the Mulsanne Corner, the road suddenly bends to the right, a corner which only the bravest prototype drivers take flat out, followed by a beautifully cambered open left hander taken in third gear. A short sprint leads the cars into Arnage, the slowest point on the track. The tight right hander was the scene of heartbreak for Toyota in 2014 when the leading #7 broke down and had to be retired after an FIA sensor melted and shut off the electronics. Kazuki Nakajiima was unable to make it to the pits, leaving him stranded on the circuit.
The Porsche Curves
At a terrifyingly high speed, the Porsche Curves is the most committed part of the lap. Getting caught behind GT traffic in this section can mean losing phenomenal amounts of time. This was the site of Loic Duval’s horrific crash in practice for the 2014 event. Keeping momentum through the flowing right-left-right handers that lead into Maison Blanche requires 100% commitment and ultimate precision, with severe punishment for getting it wrong. The exit of the Porsche Curves underwent significant change in 2020, with additional run-off added in the middle part of the section. This has turned the treacherous and claustrophobic sweeping left-hander into an open and sweeping corner, encouraging every little bit of road to be used on the exit. What it hasn’t changed is the terrific consequences for making a mistake
The Ford Chicanes
The final chapter in the 13.6km rollercoaster that is Le Mans is the Ford Chicanes. Two tight left-right handers with massive kerbs are all that separates the driver from the finish line. Watching the cars bounce over the kerbs in beautiful slow motion is certainly something to behold, but 24 hours of mistreatment can lead to suspension and steering issues. The drivers have to be attentive until the very end, lest they throw it all away in the last minutes of the race.
The Circuit de la Sarthe requires over 85% of the lap on full throttle, with the cars accelerating from less than 100km/h to over 300km/h five times each lap. The challenge of having a car finish Le Mans is in itself, an achievement.

The Classes

The WEC consists of three classes on track at once, resulting in three separate races on track each in their own battle for 24 Hours. The classes are split based on their car type, with LMH and LMDh machinery facing off in the Hypercar class, purpose built prototypes with a spec engine and gearbox battling in LMP2, and GT machinery racing in GTE. Each class has its own set of regulations, driver requirements, and relevance for the Le Mans event.

Hypercar

The current top class of endurance sportscars is Hypercar, combining cars built to Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) and Le Mans Daytona (LMDh) specifications. Fighting it out will be LMH machinery from Toyota, Ferrari, Peugeot, Glickenhaus and Peugeot, while Porsche and Cadillac will be racing in LMDh cars. The LMH cars are bespoke sportscars, designed to a strict set of requirements dictating maximum power, drag coefficient, and weight, amongst other parameters, intended to limit the cost of the category. LMDh machines on the other hand are based on the future LMP2 chassis offerings, with manufacturers able to develop their own engines and bodywork, aligning with the power and drag coefficients of LMH. As part of cost-cutting, the Hypercar class is also subject to a Balance of Performance (BoP) formula, to level the playing field and ensure good racing! Hypercars are a little slower than their LMP1 predecessors, with lap times around the 3:24 mark for the Circuit de la Sarthe, which is on par with the 2014 LMP1 cars.

LMP2

The second prototype class is LMP2, and provides an excellent platform for endurance racing on a budget. The LMP2 class features a spec drivetrain and gearbox, using a Gibson V8 producing 400kW, and a selection of three chassis to choose from, of which the Oreca 07 has been the chassis of choice. This ensures that the competition in the class is very tight, and often comes down to the drivers and the team’s performance instead of just having the best car. While LMP2 was capable of 3:25 lap times in years previous, part of the ‘stratification’ of classes with Hypercar’s inclusion, the LMP2 class has lost some power and had some weight added. This should put LMP2 at the heels of the LMH pace, but with laptimes outside the 3:28 mark.
LMP2 is the first class that must feature amateur rated drivers. The Amateurs must drive for a minimum of 6 hours in the car over the course of the race. This means that there's an element of strategy of when to use your amateur driver throughout the race, as the amateur driver is generally slower than the Pros. The pro drivers in this class range from up and coming talent, former F1 drivers, and some of the best sportscar pilots in the world, and with 244 cars in this class, LMP2 is sure to be a hotbed of action over the 24 hours.

LMGTE-Am

GT class cars are cars that are derived from production models, and feature some of the most iconic cars and brands battling it out at the top of the field. The GTE cars are on the border of aero dependency, and can lap Le Mans in around 3:45 in a professional driver’s hands.
This year is the last year of the GTE class, and features 21 cars in a Pro-Am category, with cars from Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, and Chevrolet on the grid. Despite the lack of a Pro category, the driver quality in GTE-Am is still incredibly high, with factory drivers, young stars, experienced champions and every level of experience in between on the grid, with each car featuring two Bronze or Silver rated drivers. With two amateur drivers, the strategy considerations multiply. While GTE-Am might be the class focussed on the least over the course of the race, the stories that come from this class are phenomenal, and it's well worth following.
The GT classes feature a range of different cars and configurations, and to equalise each of these against each other, the class goes through a process called 'Balance of Performance' or BoP. The organisers can adjust each individual car's weight, fuel tank, air restrictor, turbo boost pressures, and aero performance to alter performance levels to enable the different cars to race competitively. This can sometimes be contentious as every team will feel hard done by, but it is a necessary evil to having the variety of cars on the grid.

Innovative Car

Each year, there is the option for an Innovative Car, with untested or innovative technology, allowed to enter in it’s own category. In years past, this has allowed for entries from the Deltawing, or a modified LMP2 to allow amputees to race.
This year, the Innovative Car entry is a modified Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Next-Gen NASCAR, run by Hendrick Motorsports. The Next-Gen NASCAR features modifications to allow it to run safely on the Circuit de la Sarthe, and will be driven by multiple NASCAR Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button, and Le Mans Overall Winner Mike Rockenfeller.

The Legends

Part of the allure of the Le Mans 24 Hours is the history, and the legends steeped in history over the course of its 88 previous editions. The race has had many headline battles in its history - periods of time where two or three teams went toe to toe for years, with the drivers, cars, and brands embroiled in these battles given the chance to elevate themselves above the rest, and show their prowess.

The early races were dominated by the Bentley company in their Speed 6, who won 5 of the first 7 races. Cars were separated into classes by their engine displacement, and the overall winner was based on distance covered. If two cars had finished with the same number of laps, the car with the smaller displacement was declared the winner. The race wasn't run during the second world war, and comparatively very little information is available on the stories of the early days of Le Mans.
After the second world war, teams such as Jaguar, Ferrari, Mercedes, and Aston Martin became the dominant teams. This era featured the legendary Jaguar D type, the Mercedes Benz 300 SLR, the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, and the Aston Martin DBR1. Jaguar won 5 times between 1951 and 1957, followed by an era of Ferrari dominance. Drivers such as Mike Hawthorn, Stirling Moss, Juan Manuel Fangio, and John Fitch became household names as Le Mans became a battle between German engineering and British "garagistas".
Ferrari and Ford was the story of the 60's, with Ferrari winning 6 times straight before Ford won four in a row with the GT40 Mk II, taking their first win in 1966. The story of their rivalry is legendary in it's own right - Henry Ford had almost successfully bought out the Ferrari motor company, only to be knocked back by Enzo himself at the 11th hour. In retaliation, Ford planned to hurt Ferrari where it mattered most; on the track. The Ford GT40 was so comprehensively dominant that it won the 1966 edition 21 laps ahead of the next car back - a Porsche 906/6. None of the Ferrari 330P3's finished the race. This battle gave drivers like Bruce Mclaren, Dan Gurney, and Jacky Ickx their first Le Mans victories, and propelled them to the forefront of motorsport stardom at the height of motorsport's popularity.
The 1970's saw the dawn of Porsche, with the 917k taking the brand's first win in 1970, with the same car winning the following year in the hands of Helmut Marko (yes, that Helmut Marko). It would be 5 years before Porsche would win again, with Matra taking 3 victories in the interim, each at the hands of Henri Pescarolo. Porsche returned with the 936 and the 956/962c dominating the race for the next 20 years. In fact, from 1970, Porsche won 12 times in 18 events, including 7 in a row, and they miiight have been a bit cheeky about it. Amongst these 12 wins, there were 4 for both Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell, and two for IMSA legend Hurley Haywood, as well as the first win for the Joest team in 1984. This era coincided with the introduction, and subsequent destruction of the Group C sportscar formula, widely regarded as the best Sportscar championship regulations of all time. Porsche’s dominance was eventually ended by Jaguar in the XJR-9LM, at the height of Group C’s magic. Ickx's 6 wins at this stage had earned him the nickname 'Mr Le Mans', a fitting title for one of the best drivers in the world at the time.
GT cars became a force to be reckoned with at the end of the Group C era, with classes being split into LMGTP and LMP. McLaren and Porsche had wins in GTP cars, in the F1 GTR and the 911 GT1 respectively, while Porsche, BMW and Peugeot scored LMP wins. 1997 saw the first win for Tom Kristensen, while the following year Allan McNish took his first victory, starting their journeys into the legend books of Le Mans.
The 2000’s ushered in the era of Audi, with all 13 of their wins coming since the turn of the century. GTP was disbanded due to safety issues, being replaced by GT1 and GT2. Audi picked up wins in the R8, the R10, the R15, and the R18, often dominating the might of the Peugeot 908. Audi's dominance elevated not only their drivers to legend status, but also their team managers, car designers, and race engineers. People like Reinhold Joest (team manager), Dr Wolfgang Ullrich (Audisport director), Ulrich Baretzky (engine designer), Leena Gade, Howden Haynes (race engineers) behind the wall and Allan McNish, Tom Kristensen, Rinaldo Capello, Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer have become household names in the sport not only for their wins, but their longevity and domination. Audi's dominance was only broken by a win for Bentley in 2003, running basically an Audi under a British racing green skin, and Peugeot in 2009, before being ended for good by Porsche in 2015. After both Porsche and Audi left the top class, Toyota rose to dominance, taking the last 3 Le Mans events in a row!
Between 2015 and 2017, Porsche added to their victories, now holding a record 19 overall victories at the Circuit de la Sarthe. Audi trail with 13, with Ferrari, Jaguar and Bentley holding the next three positions. Toyota finally took their first overall victory in 2018, and have won every year since. Tom Kristensen is has the most victories at Le Mans, with 9 overall victories over his career with Porsche, Audi and Bentley, inheriting the title of Mr Le Mans.

In the past, the FIAWEC Broadcast has started from Qualifying Practice. We are awaiting confirmation if that is the case this year – Streams for non-FIAWEC sessions after that point will be subject to the organisers of those series broadcasting those sessions.

Official stream OUTSIDE US ONLY - The Le Mans package gives you access to all WEC sessions (Qualifying, Warm Up and the Race) with a choice of on boards, cross platform compatibility, and up to 5 devices connected at once. Additionally, replays of the event are free after the event. Official comms headed by Martin Haven, Anthony Davidson, and Graham Goodwin, who in my personal opinion properly nail the tone of the event. Has been known to get overloaded and crash however
Eurosport will likely be broadcasting the event in a variety of locales throughout Europe. This will be updated when confirmed
Radio Le Mans will be streaming live radio for every session

I have had YouTube TV now for years and never thought much of it. A week ago I tried to login to Directv app using a friend’s account and I was shocked by how much better Directv picture quality was.
I kept comparing channels and every single channel looks so much better on Directv. Channels feel HD there while on YouTube they feel 480p. I have a latest generation Apple TV 4K connected via Ethernet on a 500 Mbps connection.
We keep seeing promises of better picture quality coming to YouTube TV but it seems like nothing changes.
I don’t want to move to Directv. I love the YouTube TV guide. I love the app. I love the player design. I just want a better picture quality!

Where to find jobs / Freelancing websites

Upwork: Arguably the largest freelancing site on the internet. There's hundreds of different fields to pick from and upwork takes 20% of your earnings. You can earn ratings out of 5 stars for each job and also you can see the credibility of clients and get payment guarentee by requiring the client to lock the money when you start the job.
Fiverr: Another top site for freelancers. Fiverr's commission is also 20% and ratings are also out of 5 stars. Here you can create "gigs" (job offerings) for your services and clients will knock you after seeing your gigs.
Reddit: This is an underrated site for job but you can still find jobs if you are looking in the right places. Some subreddits include: forhire, Jobs4Bitcoins, beermoney. Beware of scammer though, you should use ecsrow service of some sort, or ask them to pay through fiverr or upwork.
Discord, Linkedin and other social media: This is much harder to find but some business owners are active on discord channels and you might just find the right match and get hired. For example, suppose there is a discord for web development and a business owner is asking to hire in a channel, then you can DM them and see if you can do the job. I know I got my first job from a CS discord where a German guy hired me for his startup as junior developer.

What are common, uncommon and rare skills

Common skills

Graphics design seems to have an overwhelming supply, too much of a common skill. Unless you are a talented artist with a large following, you shouldn't go into graphics design because there's too many people competing for the same job.
Similarly, there's too many people working in things like data entry and so clients pay too little.

Uncommon skills

Fields like video editing, 2D animations, article writing have less competition. If you can provide higher quality work then you can earn a good amount in these fields.
Other fields that come to mind are web design, web development, photography.

Rare Skills

If you have a master in CS or IT degree with good skills, then you can land a long term job.
Digital paintings and art are another field where you can excel at high income if you provide high quality art.
Similarly, you might be a musician producing original music, or a voice artist for a TV show. These pay well but the demand is much lower.

Getting your first job / a job without experience / as an absolute beginner

Hard to get hired with no reviews: You just opened a fiverr or upwork profile and you have no reviews since you are a beginner. Clients won't trust you, so you have to compensate with the following:

Design a good portfolio: Suppose you want to be a web designer, then you need to show your skills in a portfolio. Make a really good looking web page and upload it online. Share the link in your upwork and fiverr, so that clients can easily see your work and judge it. Example: web design portfolio.
Make an intro video: Do a screen recording or yourself or a small video of youself talking, it should be 1 or 2 minutes long and you should explain your skills and offerings in it, show the portfolio projects and past works you have completed. This video will give an idea to the client whether you are capable or not. Example: video editing intro
Offer low rates but provide excellent service: Since you have no reviews, you should ask for a lower rate than the standard rate. For example, for my first ever client, I asked for only $5 for a job that was supposed to be like $50, only because I needed reviews on my fiverr profile. The client was kind enough to pay me $30 and I delivered a really good website with a lot of hard work. As a result, client left a good 5 star review with a generous comment, that review helped me get new clients. Then after you get 5-10 reviews, you can increase your rates to normal.

How to approach clients

Be polite and answer questions clearly: Some people have communication problems, so clients don't hire them. Try to speak in simple English and don't write large paragraphs, use simple lines and be clear. Easier said than done, but you will learn with time.
Fast replies to client messages: Stay online for as long as possible. Keep a fiverr and upwork tab open in your browser. Install the apps on phone so that you can reply quickly.
Stay online for long: The ranking algoritms on fiverr will rank you higher if you stay online for hours and hours everyday, so keep a tab open so that you remain online.

How to succeed on Fiverr

Use the right keywords in your gig: In order for your gig to rank higher in fiverr search, your gig should have all the right keywords. You can learn the right keywords by looking at other people's gigs and picking words. For example, keywords for web design: web design, web page, figma, html, css, template, indesign. Write a title and description with these main keywords and you will rank higher. Example: web design portfolio.
Complete your profile with all educational and skill information, that way the client can trust you more. Example: completed profile

How to Succeed on Upwork

Write a specific proposal letter instead of copy-pasting: On upwork, you have to knock the clients. If you mention the right skills based on the client's job posting description, then the client will notice you more. Explain why you are right for this job and describe the steps you will perform to complete the task. Also if you have more specific questions have the job, ask that. This will show the client that you are knowledgable about the task. Also, if you have a portfolio project that matches the task, link to that.

How to get paid / payment methods / bring money to Bangladesh

wise.com: This is the easiest way to get paid directly from client. You first have to login with email and then tell your email to the client. Your first client can send you money by mentioning that email. Then, transferwise will ask you to verify with passport or NID. Once you complete that, you will be able to receive money from any client. Once you receive the money, you can convert it to BDT and send to Bangladeshi bank account of your name using the SWIFT system. But Bkash is also supported.
Payoneer on Fiverr: Fiverr payments can be brought to Bangladeshi bank account using payoneer, you can sign up easily with NID or passport.
Direct bank transfer from Upwork: Upwork allows you to send money directly to Bangladeshi bank account of your name.

Freelancing vs fixed work

Freelancing means you work temporary for various clients, but fixed remote job means you work long time for a single client.
Obviously freelancing allows you to pick your client and whether you wanna work on a certain day, so there's time flexibility. But fixed work will mean you have to work regularly with not many free days, less flexible.
However, fixed work will mean higher income, freelancers usually make less when demand for work is less.

Keep Hustling

The online markets are full of people and competition, so you can survive only if you are patient, skilled and keep trying and don't give up. Best of luck!

The blue circular light reflecting off the clouds at night is coming from the Bellingham Towers
The pink/purple glow on the northern horizon is from grow lights in Canadian greenhouses

Greenish lights low on the northern horizon could be the Northern Lights, so check the NOAA Aurora Forecast
Bright blue-green flashes when it's cold or windy are most likely the aforementioned transformer explosions

u/ssps gets the credit. He wrote a great guide a few years ago (updated more recently) explaining how to do the above. Yesterday, with just one adjustment, I did just that.
I posted a simple fix 9 days ago that removed the warnings from Safari, but the "Best practices" folks had (some valid, some not) criticisms. I still think it's a decent quick fix (worked for me) for a local only setup, but I wanted to create my own self-signed certificate, get DSM to accept it, and to stop using .local as I was advised by u/Empyrealist (using .lan instead). I was also into fixing Chrome warnings, although my dedicated Safari DSM (and now router) browser has grown on me.
My noob tips should save some of you time before you proceed with the guide (especially exporting the private key from Keychain as a .pem file intstead of .p12).
I'm just gonna paste my reply to u/ssps from another thread here. Thanks again to u/ssps! This works.

I have a MBP laptop, a Gl.inet Beryl 1300 modem, a 4K ATV, a TV, and now a NAS. I use Infuse, an amazing tvOS (also iPhone, iPad, and Mac) app that led me down this road. No plex, emby, whatever else. Simple, solid movie viewing for my ever expanding collection.
I have nothing against Montenegro (human trafficking aside) or Let's Encrypt. I always refused to use Apple's me.com email too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl_NpdAy3WY&ab_channel=XavierBorderie. I feel that the local airspace between my sofa and TV (NAS underneath in open center of cabinet) in my home belongs to me. I do not need/want any third parties involved in accessing my LAN, let alone any that impose 90 day renewals.
I had one issue: When attempting to import certificate and key into DSM, I kept getting an "Invalid private key" error. After many hours troubleshooting, I found this thread from (Thanks!) u/tomatoandcake:

DSM immediately accepted the private key as a .pem file! I even converted the .p12 to .pem in terminal, a heroic feat for a noob like me. I only realized today that I could have re-exported the private key from Keychain as a .pem. TextEdit shows them as identical.
That is not a criticism of your guide. Things change, and Synology is probably to blame.
Another indicator of my noobness, the 127.0.0.1 thing. I used that as instructed while creating my cert, but after DSM accepted it still didn't work. It wouldn't even connect in Safari. Only after getting in the hosts file and substituting my NAS fixed ip for 127.0.0.1 did everything work like a charm.
Could I, should I have used my fixed ip in the cert instead of 127.0.0.1? Maybe my DSM firewall settings caused this? My noob head is just not around all this.

Tip: While youtuber Nexcess hits space after entering ip, you may need to hit tab (your ip might be shorter). Keep your entry aligned with one above. Commenter Zakk19 helpfully posted the two commands necessary, so you can cut and paste them.
Tip: Keychain is tricky and finicky. You might not see all cert files under "Certificates", but look under"All Items" and you will. It also varies what format you can export depending on the tab you have chosen. Also must be aware of whether you are searching in "login" or "system".
Tip: When exporting files from Keychain, you will be asked to create a password for private key. Don't. Just hit entereturn, then enter your login pass to finish export. DSM won't accept any password protected keys.
Exporting the certificate from Chrome was the last step. Yes, exporting from Chrome.
Tip: Navigate to DSM using Chrome. Click on warning in address bar, navigate to certificate, click on "details" instead of "general" tab, and export. Then import into Keychain. You can use drag and drop. I know it's already in Keychain, but I guess this links them, as Mac Chrome uses Keychain too.
Tip: After importing the cert and key in DSM (DON'T FORGET-export certificate private key from Keychain as .pem file, not p.12!), and when the DSM import guide says reconfigure, it means go to your new certificate, click settings, and change your services to the new certificate. I changed all 5 of mine, including "System Default", but DSM still lists the old Synology certificate as "Default Certificate". Whatever, it all works great.

Since the 2000s are in, with some people attempting to revive the 2000s, as a geriatric Millennial, here is my early-mid 2000s Revival guide for younger readers out there. Feel free to add to it.

Living without smartphones wasn’t just about jumping on the computer instead, it was a completely different lifestyle. We weren’t yet consumed by the internet and being digital connected.

a. We had to be okay with getting lost. Most people didn’t have constant access to a map while driving. Google Maps for the computer wasn’t even released until 2005. I personally didn’t have a GPS until 2007. You had to learn the streets through repetition, reading the signs, recognizing landmarks and knowing which way the sun sets. Sometimes you had to stop and ask for directions.
b. We had to be okay with being lost. Even though there was Google and other search engines, not everything was a Google search away. It wasn’t just that you didn’t have constant access to all knowledge and information, it was that we weren’t yet conditioned to expect that. You learned through teachers, you read books, magazines and newspapers, you joined clubs and heard alternative viewpoints, and you established a worldview that you could defend.
c. We lived in the moment. If you were watching TV, you watched it. If it was time to sleep you would go to sleep. If you were playing video games, you’d get into it. Where ever you were, that was your entertainment. The phone wasn’t there to save you from boredom, it simply was a communication tool to either call or text basic sentences.
d. Unless you were carrying reading material, your eyes were open to your surroundings. It meant taking in the view, whether the city, nature, people watching, etc.

We didn’t consume on hyper drive. Consumerism was as much about the experience as it was the product.

a. If at the mall, you were as much there to socialize and people watch as you were to buy something. It was expected and it wasn’t startling to talk to people or be talked to.
b. We consumed at a more moderate pace. The 27in TV I bought in 2002 was $800. Laptops couldn’t really be purchased for $200 yet. Extremely cheap clothing was more of a fad and not the norm yet. Plus we didn’t get paid as much. Anyone remember $1 flip flops from Old Navy though lol?

Speaking of consuming, there was five ways I consumed music. CDs, mp3s, XM Radio, and broadcast radio, and then music video channels. But it meant enjoying the same music for longer periods of time.

a. That mix CD might be enjoyed for whole year and rotated with other CDs. But it was a process to download a burn CDs, and it was trial and error getting good quality MP3s off the internet. We didn’t consume music at the pace we do now with streaming.
b. Buying CDs meant enjoying and appreciating the whole album, appreciating the cover and the album art. You truly were able to appreciate the artist more. This is a habit I carry to today. If I like a song, I’ll go listen to the whole album and listen to more albums by that artist. But I still miss the physical product and the album art. Also you had to take care of your music. CDs would get scratched if you didn’t.
c. Radio whether XM or broadcast was still a thing, and sometimes you just relinquished control to the DJ. You learned to enjoy new music as it was presented to you, and weren’t just able to skip past it. Same goes for MTV and music videos as well.

TV was more about channel surfing and giving something a chance. There was only so many things you could watch and for the most part you couldn’t skip past it. But we weren’t conditioned to judge everything so quickly. We accepted that what we were watching was curated by someone else. We also couldn’t really skip commercials, so a lot of people who be exposed to the same commercials.

a. Renting movies was also a whole experience, usually done with friends, planned ahead. It was a actual movie night, probably with food. Television was an experience, not just deposable entertainment. I watched 5 seasons of Lost with my college buddies.
b. News was also consumed a lot on TV, before News tv became extremely toxic. I learned a lot watching CNN headline news. I also watched the towers fall live on TV. I was glued to the TV for the invasion of Iraq.
c. Many shows became cultural phenomena simply because a lot of us watched the same thing out of lack of choice. TV was curated to your age group not necessary you. Most of us millennials grew up watching the same MTV, Nickelodeon, and TGIF.

A lot of life felt more analog. Cell phones weren’t digital signals yet. Even cars gripped the road a bit differently than they do today. But you appreciated the nuanced feel of much of life. Not everything was so perfected and it was okay, it built patience and confidence and awareness. To get on the internet meant actually sitting down at a computer, and right around the turn of the 2000s, many times it was still dial up. Also early broadband was still slow. Wi-Fi wasn’t widely available yet and when it was available, it was unreliable.
Not everything was personal curated and fine tuned to your preferences. Netflix and Spotify wasn’t there to spit out music according to the algorithm. The internet wasn’t watching your every move to suggest the next product. Customizing your MySpace page, decorating your room, your car and your laptop was about the extend of personalization.
Not everything was grey and boring as it’s become today. Consumer tech and clothing was widely available in the whole spectrum of the rainbow. Home decor bordered on gaudy. Cars could just as easily be orange as the could be purple. Not everything was updated from their 80s and 90s decor yet.
You lived and learned, made stupid mistakes and made a fool of yourself without the fear of exposure you have today. A lot of life wasn’t recorded or under surveillance. They just became gossip and funny stories among friends.

Hi guys, I am a bug-in type of prepper: blizzards, hurricanes, and power outages. We are living in a community where houses are around 200 meters from each other surrounded by forest. Yesterday, it was an exceptionally hot day (last week there was still frost in the morning) and also very windy.

We have got many alerts by mobile phone, FM radio, TV (https://www.alertready.ca/). From the first alert about the fire 13 km away to the mandatory evacuation, it took approx. 3 hours.
Because of drought, the government issued a ban on all fires. A number of irresponsible people are still having bonfires outside or throwing cigarette butts from car windows is crazy. Last year, somebody did not extinguish his fire pit properly, and the fire spread underground to his backyard trees after 4 hours... This year there is an evacuation of 14000 people here.
"TD Insurance" company, we have coverage for evacuation, we called them, but nobody knows nothing, they need 10 hours to figure out what is covered to call you back: hotel, gas, food. They are not effective to receive calls and communicate fast. We got asked what is our monthly grocery shopping cost and we told them around 1000 CAD/months and after 6 hours, they will call you that our spending for food should be 30 CAD/day (wtf? We are buying in bulk in Costo, having stuff in the freezer and cooking at home). 30 CADs is two full menus in Wendy's (15% VAT in Nova Scotia)... After my wife complains they told us, that food spending should be "reasonable" and that we should be collecting receipts for everything. Edit: TD Insurance also forbids to use of Airbnb as accommodation (have zero idea why?).
Hotels around are hopelessly full, many of them are pet friendly, and some have "evacuation" cheaper prices, but we have booked via Booking.com at full price. With 3rd party booking, they are not able to change the price. We came to the hotel in the morning (after the night at a friend's basement) and it was crazy full, nobody is picking up the phone, but they confirmed we will get the room later (and we got it 7 hours later).
Officials do not communicate many details, only closed roads, every time it is emphasized that fire is "out of control". Radio and TV are around one hour late behind the government, RCMP, or first responder's Twitter (have them in bookmarks for your local area).

We left the house 1 hour before mandatory evacuation: got documents, notebook, hard drive from desktop), hygiene, and clothes for 3 days. I have Tecsun PL-880 receiver and two Baofengs. We left with two cars and communicated on GMRS frequencies with my wife (http://peppersradio.net/index.php?route=information/information&information_id=26). I am also part of the local ham radio community, one of the local 2-meter repeaters should be available for emergency communication, some people who are monitoring the repeater have radios for connection with first responders (TMRs). If a lot of people from one area start to use a cellular network it became useless and we had also local Bell outages before. Baofengs are quite useful, they have coverage for FM broadcast and weather emergency channels (https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/weatheradio/find-your-network.html). Apart from having some useful tools in cars (torch, first aid, knife, blanket,...), I did not prep for more (there are power outages in the area).
Schools are closed, some of them announced it the next day morning, and some of them got closed early because of aismoke pollution (it was announced in the middle of the day).

Mandatory evacuation: police are going from door to door and driving around with a loudspeaker broadcasting alert. I do not know the details, was not there.
We left our two cats at home, I was not expecting that evacuation will hit our area divided from the affected forest by a lake. Today, we came back to the neighborhood (a lot of local rural neighborhoods are having just one road to enter), after explaining the situation to a police patrol, they escorted us to the house and gave us 15 minutes to get them. A lot of people left vehicles at their homes very close to trees, definitely in ignition areas if the situation will get worse.
Local facebook neighborhood group is quite useful.

Saw a few crazy videos from dashcams of people escaping in flames with minimal visibility (turn emergency traffic lights on). It is probably safer to escape in a car than on bare feet, but not sure how air filter and air intake of the engine may behave in such conditions...
